the do what we do to get to the you're watching or does it or will be bringing you live coverage of the democratic national convention in chicago. the us democratic party has been hearing president joe biden passed the torch to its new norm, and the vice president come of the house and the 1st night of the party's national convention in chicago. he has been speaking for about 15 minutes to a rupture as welcome from the delegates at the conference center there in chicago. he's covered a very large amount of ground. he's talked about family values, he's talked about the economy and what he believes is,
7:20 am
administration has achieved with the help of course, of kind of a lot higher as we've talked about the insurrection, the riots that happened on january. the 6th insurrection is a word that has been often used by democrats, particularly with regard to what happened on january 6th, at the capital building. he's told about donald trump. he's talked about the military, he's talked about. and as i said, the economic success that he believes he has brought to the country, i wanna bring in. kimberly hawkins, who's inside the convention venue in chicago. kimberly, i'm sitting here with 7 pages of notes and a lot of those are made up by what are really us. it will help the young. it's almost all the key phrases that we're going to hear. i'm sure time and time again in the run up to uh to the election. you have seen joe biden speak for the duration of his presidency. first of all, let's just talk about this feature. so what did you make of it?
7:21 am
how does it compare to what we saw, obviously, it compared to the debate that we had been gone on some, you know, just a few months ago. let's start there. so yeah, well look, this was a bit of a rambling speech. it went on long. it was late, and this is joe biden, at kind of the end of his political career. he's not the speaker. he was even 10 years ago, but i have to admit, i job. i didn't spend a politician for more than a half century. and i've been covering him, i have been very strict bit for at least half of that time. i 1st started covering him when he was a senator and i got to tell you, i got to think of a lot like throw did that. when he talked about some of the mistakes he made, but he gave his best ego. he was a very authentic politician for most of that. and he was here with ad that's where
7:22 am
people connected with him and he made out of always been perfect. but that's what people like is that he was honest about it and, and that shawn through and so the speech was the best at parts. it was a little dry, but there were so shining moments and it's all about how you close. and that close with smashing. and there's no question that he had a high note with that and then as back really connected with the audience. and i think it showed through just the fact that it was a really nice moment where he really finished off strong. and, you know, you have to remember that for joe by that and he thought he was going to be finishing this d. n. c or democratic national convention on the final night is the nominee. and he's not going to be doing that now. so it's a very bitter sweet moment, but he's standing on that stage right now,
7:23 am
finishing the 1st night rod standing side by side with the future of the party. and you hope the next president of the united states. pamela harris, passing the arch ad, doing it it a strong and successful way. and i think he's proud of that. and it certainly showed, as you've delivered that speech, i want to ask you though about that this is the pointed with the product of which the practicality start. do you think that that is enough to be able to, at the same time, draw a line essentially under his presidency at least as far as the the d. n. c is concerned, but at the same time as you were referring to pass the torch, add to tumble of how it stays there, enough. the campbell, that's how risk can build on in order to be able to carry the residence of that forward as well. he's done everything he can do, it's all up to her now. and you know, really the, the, the hard work now is up to come. a lot of joe biden has certainly laid the
7:24 am
foundation and he's given her every tool in the tool box in order to do it. he's given her the foreign policy tools. he's given her the domestic and the economic tools. and he's given her the, the connections in order to do that. but really it's up to come le harris from this point forward. so the next few days are going to be very indicative in terms of what she does with those tools. and so we're going to have to watch carefully to see what she does. she's certainly got the momentum. and so she's given, she's been given a gift. a certainly the us president has been, as you say, draw the live at the end of his presidency in terms of how he feels he's done and completed his presidency and his term. although he points out he's still got a few months left in office. the police, he's got a lot of work to do ad for us here about 0 certainly that isn't limited and
7:25 am
includes the israel's were and gaza trying to what made me his legacy tried to get the cease fire agreement, which of course in his by just very significant and then for, for so many of us here is significant our lives as well. and for the democratic protesters outside as well as is what they hope will be very 4 years here in the democratic national convention. so that is something that is for to be on the forefront and couple of harris is certainly they are hoping will be something she recognizes as well. but again, it's all up to come. le harris now is this point forward whether or not she's going to recognize that issue and some of the other issues that job i brought up with the speech like whether it's the economy, whether it's going to be recognizing some of the other issues this of framed court, so whether it's going to be lower in crisis, there's a whole basket of issues that she's got to address. and so far she hasn't taken
7:26 am
much time to, to address them. she's not how to sit down interview of any sort of major sort. as she's really awarded sort of any kind of major press conference uh to this port with the media. so she's writing m through z as in ways, but how long she'll be able to do that is, is really kind of the big question. this point. yeah, i want to ask you about that that a, something more practical. i mean couple of hours is expected to speak, i believe on thursday, right towards the end of the d. n. c. what are we likely to see just over the next few days? how is that going to play out for us as well? you know, what's really interesting, and notable in all of this is that a number of people here that i've been talking to pundits of delegates have all talked about the fact that there's a new enthusiasm. i, i hate to keep using that word, but there's, there isn't another word to describe it. as soon as he hasn't been the party that
7:27 am
hasn't really been seen since 2008. the last time that there was seen was waiting for rock. obama hit the stage and so they're excited to see that voters are engaged again. it's young people that are engaged together in the process. it's voters of color. they're engaged, added women that are engaged, wanting to hit the campaign trail to, to help pamela harris campaign. but also are willing to go out and vote and, and are excited about that. so this is significant, but the thing is, is that the momentum needs to carry forward. and this is something that we're going to see throughout the week. and so tomorrow we're going to have the man who's responsible for that speaking. we know that brock obama squared to be speaking michelle obama is going to be speaking. and then later on in the week are going to be hearing from tim law of the governor of minnesota. i many people don't even know who this guy is. so carla harris has to introduce him to the american people as
7:28 am
well. and then what's really interesting is paula harris herself, is it known to a large number for support or is many polls indicate at least a 3rd or for voters, don't even know what she stands for. when you look at her web site, there's not even a mention of what her foreign policies are. so she's got a lot of work to do to explain who she is, what she's, when it comes to what she's done as a vice president. she's virtually invisible. so she's certainly very popular, but when you asked people why the can't really say what does this the like to vendor of events. she seems very uh, likable or she's of a lot of integrity. but when you get down to the specifics of people have a hard time sort of 10 for i think it's so she's got to introduce yourself and really give more substance beyond the style of what so far has been successful in connecting with voters in the united states yeah,
7:29 am
kimberly clearly there's on still on an awful lot of ground to cover for uh, harrison and we'll send this and we're going to see as you were just talking, there's some of the elements of that playing out over the next few days or so. kimberly, we appreciate you taking the time to give us that breakdown of what's been happening over the last few hours. thank you very much indeed. as kimberly holler at the convention venue there in chicago because we were just talking about the democratic presidential candidate campbell, the house made a surprise appearance on the 1st night to the parties convention. the guys were just talking about, she's uniformly accept. the point is nomination later in the week, but she did take to the stage to saint joe bible for his political service. thank you for your historic leadership, for your lifetime of service to our nation and for all you will continue to do. we . * are a great the
