9:22 pm
a ceasefire. negotiations as negotiations when it comes as by law. so the escalating along the lebanese border, but also there may be other, a school of tori moves that we see going forward. and that's all about trying to clinical read the find the calculus for israel in the region and making sure that it's neighbors and critical actors that are opposed to it remain on guards on the one hand, but also ensure the continuation of nazi now is government. and just to stay on focused with syria, i mean it's, it's more likely isn't it to get away with strikes on syria. there's less accountability because we've had the syrian regime, for instance, condemn this attack. but there's not much else a lot k to do as a they don't really have the ability to do very much. i mean, you're, you're right in that. if they tried to escalate, visa view has been lost,
9:23 pm
passes certain points, then you know, his bottle is going to respond doesn't respond quite forcefully, although they'll do their own calculations when it comes to syria. that's really very likely. um, of course when it comes to god, so they've been, they've been escalating for weeks and months. so yeah, certainly when it comes to serious, serious, still not fully normalize in the international community, but also doesn't have the capacity to respond to israel when it attacks and that sort of fashion. so what is the goal. busy is there any prime minister netanyahu to, to continue these escalations on, on various from so, mean, does a tit for tat, just continue indefinitely. i mean, that's the problem with 0 o, quote unquote, calculating and calibrating escalation, right? but the idea being, you can raise that tempo, but just a little bit just in order to make sure that the, the game keeps on going. of course,
9:24 pm
it never works like that. you cons perfectly calculate perfectly calibrate and escalation. you're not in control of all the factors, so it could be that the next truck they do, for example, again south loven on um they don't strike in quite the same sort of surgical fashion that they deem themselves to have done so thus far. and then as well, the responds in kind of, it could also be in reverse where his, my life or another actor strikes him is really target and time to that a military target. but then strikes as ability one we've already seen probably at least one major occurrence of that in recent months. so i think that unfortunately what you see and you know this and being a part of these really press many times over the past 6 months. and that's now is government isn't looking for a cease fire in gaza is going to continue the war and gaza. and that means
9:25 pm
ensuring that the escalation and disco touring moves fail the best way to fail. and the best way to make sure that they fail is to ensure that there are other things to keep people busy as well. and i suspect that this may have something to do. why do they struggle targets in syria? but also just keeping in mind the, they claim the id is read, these kind of syria and target as action a rating and targets. and that, that makes it very different as far as who's reading calculus goes. good to get your perspective. ha, how the a senior associate fellow at carnegie endowment for international peace. thank you . the rescue operations of continuing in northern vietnam, often bridge collapsed over flood the river. following the arrival of 22 in yagi. the collapse happened in the province. the deputy prime minister says 10 vehicles,

flooded red river. it comes as downgraded tyson yazzy continues to devastate areas across the region of google is facing its 2nd major anti trusts trial in less than a year. this time, it sort of advertising the us justice department and 8 states accuse the company of operating in the, in the online ad markets a large. but the tech john maintains a monopoly of advertising technology and controls the market by calling rivals to eliminate competition. google, on the other end is all getting there is plenty of competition to be had suggesting the government isn't accounting for the fact that ads and now pre dominant on social media apps. google lost a separate major case. last month, the judge ruled google acts and legally to cross competition over its search function, paying billions to device makers and telecom companies to be the default search
9:33 pm
engine and controlling 90 percent of that market. that's getting more in this with eric having comm piece profess of law and competition policy was such a cool now university. he joins us from ithaca in new york. thank you. so for your time. so this is the 2nd anti trusts trial that google is facing in on the yet this one could have even wind implications, couldn't it talk us through the significance? so that was sort of a broad level this case gets that one of the most common concerns we. we have surrounding major tech platforms, which is that many of these firms operate in a bunch of different inter connected markets. and what they might sometimes try to do then is to sort of leverage their physician in one market to gain an advantage in another market. and so this case fits that better and it to potentially provide a blueprint for going after analogous practices involving other platforms. so it's
9:34 pm
effects could potentially be extended beyond just the online advertising space. and google's parent company is arguing it's success is due to the effectiveness of its services. i'm the fact that there, there is all the competition that it exists. so for the, for the prosecution, how, how tricky a case is to prove otherwise. and so, yeah, it's a good question. there are 2 main difficulties. the 2 main proof hurdles that the government will have to get over 1st and has to show that google has monopoly power for that. it, it will get monopoly power if it keeps doing what it's doing. and then it has to show that google is using anti competitive practices to test to sort of sustain its, its dominant position. both things are usually difficult, but uh the government has a few things working in its favor in this case. so the 1st is that google is just a very powerful and pervasive figure in this particular area of online advertising
9:35 pm
. that will make it a little harder for google to avoid the conclusion that it is a monopolist. now, the government is also alleging sort of a very conspicuously long list of, of anti competitive practices in this case. so even if the record is not persuaded by all of these different arguments, the d o j, the justice department might have enough left on the list is still when the case. so we'll see what happens. but i think the government does have a strong position here. so potentially what is the worst case outcome here? so google, i mean, so some people are talking about it being forced to break up. yeah, i would say that's, that's the worst case scenario. so the government is that is asking for, for google to die best a large pieces of its online advertising business. so that would mean selling us, um, you know, what, you know, a large business is better dogs. and so this would prevent google from being able
9:36 pm
to sort of to leverage its power in one market to uh, to give pain an advantage in another market. it would eliminate immediately, you know, a large part of one of 2 goals, big revenue sources. and so google makes, you know, many billions of dollars from display advertising and much of that would banish, uh, this is this, uh, google were broken up. and then you talks about how this could have implications. uh, be on online app advertising. i mean, talk us through that a bit more what, what because those implications looked like. so just to the extent that this sort of trend that we have in big tack where you've got companies operating and a bunch of related markets and sort of using maybe several ways to force users at one level to stick with the same company at
9:37 pm
a different level rather than going for our competitors, that's kind of a common thing we see in lots of the sort of allegations less levied against big tech companies. so there's 2 locations very much about that. so, you know, there are a number of sort of, legally challenging issues that come up and in cases like this. and if this government projects some of those questions resolved and sort of create a template. and then you know, the d i, j and other plaintiffs could potentially piggyback on this case to help you know, a little away at other analogous practices out there and big tech. really interesting to get your thoughts on this. eric having come professor of low and competition policy research at cornell university. thank you. thanks. so now that you case, catherine, the princess of wales says she's completed chemo therapy for an on disclose cancer
