4:30 pm
yeah, expats. so let's look at the us select tool map. we want to tell you about a very important swing states president joe biden, home state of pennsylvania with 19 electoral college votes. it is this year's biggest prize among battleground states. many observers, in fact, believe it will be the tipping point state. the place at either side must win the claim. the white house pennsylvania voted blue for decades. but that changed with donald trump. in 2016 trump breaks the democrats, so called blue wall winning pennsylvania. by a margin of just over $44000.00 votes out of nearly $6000000.00 cost. now in 2020 joe biden, slips it back, but the margin remains very sent about 80000 votes. so it margins like this. we need to look deeper to understand what's happening. the basic electro map of pennsylvania in 2020. it looked like this. those big blue areas, the cities of philadelphia and pittsburgh. and all that red in the middle is mostly rural and much more finley populated. look at what happened over time,
4:31 pm
starting in 2012 voters. from these 3 counties theory lizard north hampton road in for democrats. and then in 2016, they switched to voting for donald trump, who as we know, eventually won the presidency. so on election night watch erie county posters say this is the funniest county in the entire country and they think that no candidate can win pennsylvania if they can't win here. pennsylvania is nickname is the keystone state very appropriate this year. and because it is so important, candidates are pouring money into campaigning and advertising. both the harrison from campaigns are reportedly spending $360000000.00 on tv, digital, and radio as a just a pennsylvania. and what do pennsylvania's care most about? well, so many it's fracking, that's a form of oil and gas production that is bad for the environment, but which supports a huge number of jobs around the state. paris famously opposed fracking when she
4:32 pm
1st ran for president 4 years ago, but now says that she supports it to win pennsylvania. both candidates will need the support of a coalition of voters from different demographic groups that's white's black and hispanic voters, as well as people from both prosperous urban centers and suburbs, as well as rural areas. they also need college and non college educated voters to rally behind them. all that means that convincing the people of pennsylvania that their plans for the economy, jobs and funding for their communities will work for them as well. so adultery is important, but so is north carolina. so let's go now live to fill the bell. he's there for us in north carolina's capital. raleigh, raleigh were democratic presidential candidate council of harris will be holding a rally. so, phil, you've been all over the country. you've been to republican cell, trump events, you've been dot com, la harris, and we've covered campaigns. we know we can get a sense this close to the election of who's got the momentum. so what's the feel like on the ground? i mean, what?
4:33 pm
so 3 hours, the light is on the hours of hearing is a ready the, i mean it's like this back to home figure on the cover of 6 o'clock. sorry for the wasting. just fell off buses of hot water 3 come along or was it is the problem iris on her why we brought donald trump or something like that. he's going to be involved came out which was coming out say was a couple hours is running night. he's gonna be in the hospital with the full 500 a week on august. second. just how important is 60 electoral college when back to for long pennsylvania is 19. this is going to work for the republicans felt that they don't because it is a site that is pretty much gone. republican president, every election accepted the call during the 70s rock obama back in 2000. but what we say is the policy are very exciting. one,
4:34 pm
the 1st time to the next 7, st. paul probably about a month ago at like 3 points for real and she is on by 11 points against likely fall off song. so and especially at some of the areas outside the cities, that's 70. i expected the guy the charges. oh every what a conservative north carolina that a presidential campaign signs for donald trump. i'm coming to harris every. what to they go together here or you voted for that is good. this is this call washing built in the city 37 years blasted with trump bands because you can imagine how he plans to vote truck want to hold the board. now. male,
4:35 pm
that's way a lot of b. i kind of favor him a little bit too, but with days to go before the election, a change exist don't. does there to be the president, man, for the you know that the black be with this. if you get a feeling adult you day, you gotta man and got 30 balls, felonies. this still get a chance to become the president. wilson county is 40 percent black. it is deeply religious, but politically, it may be getting a bit of a print job. and in a state that has any voted for a democratic president twice in 40 years. that could be a massive deal. democrats here in north carolina, tennessee, the strongest support around the city as far as the rural areas tend to sway more republic. and it's kind of like a lot of places in the united states, except here in north carolina. a 3rd of the population lives in a rural setting, making it a crucial voting blog. and here's the thing. honestly, i did both of the registrations off. they are up 33 percent, which means a group of people who have no political ties. nobody knows how they going to both.
4:36 pm
well, they could make all the difference. matthews chapman is the local republican policy and he's a farmer. so he knows what worries his colleagues, p as a regulation for one. you know, they're having to spend money on things that they've never had to spend money on before. and so that, that hurts and what favors them to going most have, you know, you know, their, their faith attached to how they believe having that has is, this is big and i think that's part of the message we have to get out to folks to would you like some democratic on the other side of town, i'm the political aisle. my holly is trying to get every vote. she comes to the democrats. i don't, i don't think wilson county has ever canvassed as many doors as we have this year. that was affiliated, both his family and the sites to i feel like a lot of the affiliated voter registers that way because they don't want to be locked into a party. they want to be able to do their own research and, you know,
4:37 pm
come to their own conclusions out of pocket the car wash, ernest and his trump stick are all going. all that. now that's about, that's about the percentage right? of donald trump being the president to this big leg. but other voters in his critical battleground states may not be able to cite fed lavelle. i'll just say era . wilson county, north carolina. this election comes at a time when the country is also dealing with major issues beyond its borders. many may argue the foreign policy doesn't figure. hi, i'm a list of concerns for voters. but this year is for being 3 different israel's foreign guys and it isn't in the 2nd year. it's now expanded into loving on. and yet us support for israel has not way. and that has led to growing criticism, definitely abroad, but also f o u. s. foreign policy towards israel has become a critical topic and campaigning for many voters. the war and gaza has become a top priority, especially in battle ground swing states. it's
4:38 pm
a deeply divisive issue that led to nationwide protests and also citizens on college campuses. but washington's decades long support for israel remains, as it continually says, iron clad. it continues to provide israel with billions of dollars and military aid, including 2000 pounds bunker busters, which has been suspended 10. busy rarely, but since the war began, presidential buttons administration has, has consistently justified israel's military operations. as self defense. we are resolute in our defensive israel when it comes to attacks and receiving from iran from or on proxies. and we stand with this real animal. we stand with as well and as the fence the but the most recently award israel that it must improve the humanitarian situation in gaza or face potential cuts to military aid. on tuesday, the us repeated,
4:39 pm
it's call for israel to allow much needed 8 into the strip. however, washington has protected israel's government from any consequences for the war which has killed more than $43000.00 palestinians displaced millions and left much of the strip in ruins of several attempts to oppose this humanitarian ceasefire and gaza has failed. that's because the us has repeatedly blocked the move at the un security council and be, excuse me. and they told at least 3 resolutions. colleagues, the united states is disappointed. this resolution made no mention of israel's rights of self defense. like every nation in the world, israel has the inherent right of self defense, as reflected in article 51 of the un charter. let's bring in our panel of guests joining us to discuss u. s. foreign policy towards the middle east. michael omar,

man is director of research for israel palestine and democracy for the error of world now. and phyllis that is, directs the new internationalism project at the institute for policy studies, and is also in an international advisor for jewish voices. for peas. welcome to you both and thank you so much for being here. like i want to start with you, can you explain to the international audience? what exactly right now is the support for israel versus pal side. not was the people here in washington with the american people. i think we've seen increasing levels of popular support for the post any cause in ways that are really unprecedented in american politics and what have been almost unimaginable in the previous election cycles. and, and so what we're seeing is a lot of popular outrage. you know, i, the last pulls, i saw some 70 percent of americans would be supportive of some sort of arms and margot against israel. and yet we say the opposite coming out of the actual policies were paul, i haven't seen that. i'd have to get back to you. okay. yeah,
4:41 pm
because what i've seen, i mean, obviously when you look at polls and there's been so much pulling on this from here to go of older americans, 100 percent like the numbers are that they support is really pretty staggering. but when it comes to the youth vote in this country, the latest one i saw was from 2 adults under 30 simple. they are asked to do some size with more palestinians, 33 percent. israel, 14 percent. obviously the useless use vote is really fired up. we saw it on college campuses, but those protests have pretty much vanished. what happens? what i think there's a couple of things. certainly there is a generational component to this massive level of support for palestinian lives in the context of and is really genocide which is being enabled by the us weapons. there's outrage, there's anger, there's this enormous divide between the leadership of the democratic party in particular, and it's bass, it's bass has on one that at least one full has said. 70 percent want an
4:42 pm
n 2 arm sales to to israel right now. whether that means a full in vargo is a different questions, but certainly they want an end to sending the weapons that are being used right now . 61 percent of americans across the board. so the same thing. but when you look at the youth vote, that has already been in place the, the, the generational shift has been underway for the last 101215 years. there was a pole in 2023 just a year or so ago in which the, the institute for june, the institute of the jewish electorate, was either way, the jewish elect, torres institute, cold, jewish americans and found that 25 percent of american jews thought that israel was an apartheid state, but 38 percent of young jews said the same thing. so this generational shift, this generational divide has been underway already. when the genocide that his is
4:43 pm
now underway and gaza began shortly after the attacks of october 7th. that generational divide began to, to wide and even further. but we also saw among other people, including older people. my generation also beginning to shift their or views so that people are not any longer being automatically assuming that is real is our, is our best ally is realistic. democracy, all of these assumptions that had already been inculcated in people for it, for decades to our educational system here, through the media in all kinds of ways. and what we're seeing is that people are standing back and say, wait, this can't be right. what we're seeing in our own eyes, because this is now happening on our phones, on our computer screens on our televisions. and that plays a huge role in how people come to understand what they are reading in the paper, what they are hearing on the radio. it's different when you're seeing it in front
4:44 pm
of you and that has created an enormous change in terms of the college campuses. you have all of that. but you also have a summer, the summer of 2024. when college campus administrators spends the summer figuring out ways to suppress pro palestinian demonstrations on campus, some of that is being described as issue neutral, meaning it applies to everybody, but it's being applied 1st and most strenuously against supporters and palestinian rights. i went to massachusetts and i talked to an mit graduate. this kid was getting to master's degrees from mit, which costs an absolute fortune. and they told him, if you start didn't start protesting, you wouldn't get a diploma. he kept protesting, it's been extraordinary. and what we're seeing is that not only are students being threatened with being kicked out of school, but for an students then phase deportation under trump, that's a trump policy if he's elected. so time magazine did a rather no, that's not only
4:45 pm
a trump policy, that's a policy of us immigration law. that if you're a full time student and you're suddenly not taking classes, you can face. oh yeah, protection for not taking classes, not for being profiles. no, no, no, right, that's that's, that's a trump thing. okay. i misunderstood non time magazine. just did the interview is, is really the prime minister benjamin netanyahu rather so fall interview. but he was asked about is ease of started about his losing the use folks. and i'm gonna paraphrase, he's just said, i think america should be concerned because their supporting murders, obviously he's trying to say, paint all palestinians as murders which this is not what the kids are protesting. but then he went on to say the young people are, are protesting israel because of ignorance is they don't understand the issue. so is that framing working? do you think, michael? because it really is, it has died down a lot. and i think that would fill us. that is absolutely correct. this is generational and there's always a dismissal of a, you know, use a political phenomenon as, as passing as,
4:46 pm
as not reflecting the sort of broader trends and american politics and society. but i think what you're also seeing is that is rarely is, and netanyahu in particular for many, many years now have been saying that, that they acknowledge they can't when everybody anymore that, that israel is going to become core. if you know, at this point is a part of an issue with united states and that they need to maintain a critical mass of support. and beyond that that you have to accept some, some losses and, and once you do that, it's easy to write off those who don't agree with you or to those that don't support you as misinformed or ignorant or just not understanding the issue. there's been such a massive disconnect between these democrats and the democrats that i've talked to in outside of around the country. a packed, i need think we need to talk about the impact of a pack. they have raise more money, this selection. so i think that's a $100000000.00, but it's not just a gift candidate to support them. they've changed text in the last couple years.
4:47 pm
they're calling after democrats progressives at they're going to have to be in to say, basically we're going to defeats you in a primary where they successful. so, they were successful in 2 cases in representative corey bush and representative jamal bowman. but it took them literally tens, and in the case of, of jamal bowman, it took, i believe it was about $125015000000.00 to carry that out in the past. they could have done that with a few $100000.00, maybe a $1000000.00. this is an extraordinary struggle that they are waging, and a lot of it has to do with this stomach, this, this demographic shift. the generation will shift that michael and i both been talking about. and that's because they're worried. they're worried that they're losing the young supporters. a pack is worried other parts of the israel lobby. it's not only a pack, it is a host of organization is and they are targeting students because they know that's where they're losing their supports. you know, i think there's a caviar to that because they, i think it was 8 total races that they tried to. primary democrats,
4:48 pm
jamal bowman was an incredibly weak candidate. i mean, he pulled the fire alarm and the congress during a vote and got censored for it. and corey bushes, under investigation from the justice department for campaign finance violations. and she voted against the bi partisan infrastructure bill, which is was the main campaign that they argued about. so is that really success for a fact? or is that just i get picked up the easy one. i think that they identify those who they can focus on an issue that came up the, the fire alarm was not a major issue that didn't make jamal bowman and a bad congress versus he was well loved in his district, but they spent, and they, as we saw they had to spend a huge amount of money to defeat him. the same with corey bush, i think it was 9000000 for her. so, you know, we're looking at a huge price that they have to pay because there has been more importance put on the question of where do you stand on us support for israel? that's now a major issue for democrats. we saw it at the dnc when the people were,
4:49 pm
were urging at 1st we need something in the democratic program that says there will be no more than arms sent. and they said no, no, no, that's not going to happen. and then the demands were reduced and reduced as the em all people wanted was a palestinian american elected official from georgia. she's a state assembly woman from georgia who was going to give a 2 minutes speech to minutes on the stage of which 2 sentences had anything to do with god. the rest was about her role as a democrat. they said no, not going to do it. we're not going to do it. it was such from the vantage point of how do you win over your own base? it was a huge mistake. was a huge mistake that there, man, i would just have a couple of minutes left. so i want to ask both of you, michael, you 1st, you know, the thing i've heard from all the young kids is harris is going to be just like fighting. i mean, maybe we're reading too much in the tea leaves because she did come out a month before biden and said she's fired now, and i think that was march of 2024. she's 1st democrat to say it. so if will there
4:50 pm
be any difference if you think if harris wins the presidency, they what we seen from job i, which is literally giving israel every thing they want. and about officials here. busy say they've made changes because of america. it's hard to point out which ones they have. so any change you support, you expect anything different between harris and the by the policy. i think just by virtue of the time in the passage of events and changing circumstances, we'll see it different policies and different approaches. but, but i also do believe that she, you know, in maybe more of an incremental way represents that generational shift. and a lot of ways to some people, not to everybody. and, and i think there's going to be a lot of, of, of, of choices that you'll have to make. and she'll have the benefit of, of a blank slate, even with the legacy of, of kind of ministration that will create opportunities for her to take a different path if she chooses. however, the baseline for us foreign policy and support toward israel is very, very high. and so the margins where, where you can expect change,
4:51 pm
it's not what most voters and say the uncommitted movement would be satisfied with those rules purchase. if you can. i think that the everything that michael said is absolutely true. i think that the question of a difference, it is reading tea leaves. she was the 1st to say of the major candidates. on the other hand, she made clear that she was only talking about a temporary suspension, not a full scale, permanent ceasefire. there was going to have to be that kind of a change if the democratic leadership is not going to maintain this huge gap with their base. i think we do have to recognize that a trump administration based on what we saw when trump was president, will be even more supportive. i know that's hard to imagine, but it is true. it can always get worse, and there could be much more more weapon cents. more freedom to do what? nothing you who wants. well, that's my goal. and so let's thank you so much for joining us. this is a very informative panel, and l g 0 will have comprehensive special coverage on election night make sure to join us from 20 to gmc on november, the 5th,
