of decided votes that could make all the difference here. let me try my best to say for years they've been treated as a 2nd, say a try. take this palm, for example. up until about 20 years ago. they weren't allowed to fish year by getting lot full federal sites, as they say that will enable them to be at the same level as all the recognized tribes out. so that the fact that north carolina is a possible ground state, i'm the lumber already significant, both st. blog. well, that gives some leverage. try chem, and john doesn't know who to trust right now. we have seen these promises. we have heard the promises before, but he does know he's in a good place to bargain. now what i want to do is chairman, is the day after the election without the cloud, so i fell into disassembled. we need to hold them accountable, and we need not lit up all for them. i feel they have for field a promises to us a to our people, back at the wedding, a new union as a new beginning. this is what bringing people together looks like it is perhaps
9:40 pm
a world away from the politics of washington. phil laval, autism era, roberson county, north carolina, from north carolina to michigan. another swing state, absolutely key swing state. that's where to raise a bio, joins us now from table. we size a king t spring state that to raise a how t all the arab american population that the small games were in the main sweets in the center of dearborn. this is the largest city with arab, an arab american population here and right now this election is so tight that those bolts may be decisive on friday. and donald trump was present here, keeping an active site. it's not far away from where i right. i right now there's lots of different jobs meant with cameron, the higher reason, the current administration,
9:41 pm
because of the ongoing war and gaza and didn't limit on that. even though the power of american population in the united states were present around one percent. they're still important to bolting mosley because they're located in swing states like michigan right now. let me right now the one of the problem sisters here to my daughter. she's a students here and see about setting up a little bit about how you feel about the selection. what do you think? i mean, what happens? honestly, the selection is making me feel very sick. so my stomach, i don't know what the future holds. i pray every day that you know, god can create a plan where we can overcome the terrorist state of israel. we're trying every day . you see how we're marching. the been marching almost every week. going to detroit city council, other places to try to advocate for palestinian and the lebanese people. my
9:42 pm
families and loving on right now. and they live in bay route. and i am terrified of what could happen to them too. but like tell me a little bit about the selection, you know, many people use the vote for the democratic party. now we're seeing donald trump coming here. i mean, who do you think people are going to vote? honestly, i think people are gonna stick to their way is if they, the united states is a 2 party system. and it's honestly, i think donald trump, or kamala harris, have the bus, you know, the bus back to in, but i'm going to be voting for joe sign. she advocates for the lebanese and the palestinian people. she doesn't want to see this war. she doesn't want this war anymore, and neither do any of us. nobody wants this war. thank you very much. no problem. so you can see a police car right behind me. so what we're marching on the streets. this is a bit of a feeling that we're seeing here in the, our board among the population with some people voting for donald trump. others for
9:43 pm
saying that will still vote for cabinet heather hurries. others were saying that they will vote for none of them. what's important is that this place traditionally used to be used to vote for the democratic party. that is something that certainly has changed. there's lots of anger, lots of frustration, lots of pain with people seeing their relatives being affected, being killed by the wars, and live on, on and in gaza right now. and that's what they're saying is that this time is the moment the crucial moment to make those feelings expressed in the polls back to you . thank you to raise the end table and let's dive deeper on the situation. in michigan, the arab american vote was critical to joe biden winning michigan in 2020, with one pulse, suggesting 86 percent of voters back to. so bonnie, a breaks down the numbers in a state that could have a significant impact in the selection. for months when american state that has
9:44 pm
regularly featured in our coverage of israel's war on gaza, has been michigan to swing states with 15 electrical votes. for decades, michigan has been part of the democrats so called blue wall voting for the party in election after election until 2016. in 2016 trump won the state by a res within margin, just under 12000 votes. out of more than 4000000 cost in 2020 byte and one michigan back. but a lot has changed since then. israel's war on gaza a seen an outpouring of anger among arab americans, a group which normally skews heavily democratic. and michigan is the swing state with the largest share of arab american voters. does the war affect how the vote? absolutely. earlier this year, more than a $100000.00 democrats, punished to joe biden for his handling of the conflict voting against him during michigan's primary. instead of supporting his re nomination as candidates, they chose uncommitted, and less than 2 months before election day,
9:45 pm
the uncommitted national movement declared that it would not endorse calmly harris or donald trump to that. now, the most closely watched part of the state will be here at wayne county home to americas auto, capital, detroit, the state's largest city, also home to dearborn, the country's 1st arab american majority city. nearly a 140000 people who trace their heritage to the middle east and north africa live in wayne county. bottom one more than 68 percent of the vote here in 2020, but anger over his administration's middle east policy could change that and lower the turn out for harris. now if we step back and look at michigan as a whole, arab americans represent just 3 percent of the population. most of the americans make up around 2 and a half percent, not a big number. so wouldn't really matter. the arab american support is flowing to minor party candidates. that's bad news for harris, but there's a long history of them doing well in the polls,
9:46 pm
but it getting few actual votes on election day. and it's just as possible that voters unhappy with both trump and harris will stay home and not vote at all. the state of palestine is officially recognized by a $146.00 countries around the world, but the us refuses to do so. but despite stating for decades of the 2 state solution that creates a palestinian state next to israel is the only way to end the conflict. washington has consistently supplied israel with arms and allowed it to seize palestinian land and expand illegal settlements and occupied territory. this april, the u. s. vito palestine is bid for full un membership. as for the candidates, couple of harris as reiterated the 2 state solution policy. what donald trump said recently is going to be very, very tough, will bring, you know, a panel of guess in just a moment. but 1st, know that explains why palestinians say the phrase 2 state solution is losing old,
9:47 pm
meaning a 2 state solution. so do you show the, does it the 2 state solution? the 2 state solution is a tuesday solution. it's the cops. all phrase, western leaders have used for decades, touted as the solution that would bring peace to the middle east. they've even made endorsing it a requirement for any palestinian political actor seeking western support. under the solution historical palestine would be divided. israel keeps 78 percent of the land by palestinians regain sovereignty. over 22 percent of it. a short lived political process was launched in 1993 based on this formula for the backend of successive us administration. but a lot has changed since then. it's ready parties from across the spectrum have dropped any mention of the 2 state solution supporting line grab and supplements expansion. instead, the current government outweigh projects it, and that's to next, the occupied westbank,
9:48 pm
federal credit candidate tunnel. a hair assess to work on a path towards the 2 state solution without offering any details of what that means . republican candidate, donald trump is accused of ending the formula out or pushing for era is really normalization instead. and recognizing israel's illegal annexation of jerusalem and the goal on heights, it really does point out the emptiness of us policy, which largely is about defending a slogan, as opposed to actually trying to achieve something on the ground. for now, this go to concept for us politicians buys time for israel's territorial expansion and palestine series are good all day does ita as well. let's discuss a little bit further with my panel of guests who are with me here in washington overlooking the white house. we have laid a, i'll have that kind of senior political activist, also known for a whole award winning books,
9:49 pm
the goals that kitchen published and you can reach any we also have colored outing, the senior fellow at the middle east institute. thank you for joining us. i'm calling, let me start with you. the idea of a 2 state solution. i think the old way back to 1947 the you and came up with this palestine partition plan before that was in israel to divide into a jewish and arab state. then 19 nineties, we have the oldest level chords, which was foot by stomach, a 2 state solution happen. things have just gone backwards. all we now to think further away than ever. yeah, we absolutely are further away from a 2 state solution than we've ever been. you've were even further away than we were on october 6th of 2023. and every trend line is moving against 2 states. and i think most importantly do have a, a far right is really government that openly rejects the idea not only of a palestinian state, but even the, the notion of
9:50 pm
a palestinian nation or people is something that is completely rejected. and that they are actively working to dismantle. so this is one of the reasons, for example, the netanyahu government has said the, even the pa cannot return the palestinian authority to, to gaza because they don't want any national entity that represents palestinians to be functioning in any of the occupied territories, but particularly in gaza. like that you are a published and you you are from gaza. what do you think? now when you hit this woods, which for the invest communities become like a mantra? 2 state solution. i mean 1st that has to be said that it feels like any question that is not addressing how we can and this genocide feels like a huge distraction. and it's, it's almost just preposterous to be discussing solutions at a time when my people and my family are being slaughtered. and i can't help but think the only i can't envision really another solution. any other solution that
9:51 pm
doesn't end in the complete ethnic cleansing, of the palestinians everywhere, but especially in gauze and especially in the north. but that being said, you know, the, i think it's important. there's a few different points here to consider. the 2 state solution, of course, as you mentioned, as we heard earlier, is not necessarily new, this idea of partition, right? but, but originally, as it was conceived, it was always meant to be a process and nothing more. in the words of edward side, a smoke screen right for their settlement expansion, a deliberate, it was deliberately designed to distract right. to kind of constantly have us chasing this mirage. carrot constantly hanging in the horizon. um that was a really i like to call it the to state illusion because it's, it's just that, um and so the question becomes this destruction of course, was to further israel's overriding goals, right. not only to further expand settlements, but it's overriding goal of maximizing its control over the land with this few
9:52 pm
palestinians in that land as possible. so i think it's important to understand that again, we're chasing this. what, what is this has for a long time? been the conventional wisdom of something that actually realistically never had a chance to survive from the outset. god is you said earlier on, israel will certainly netanyahu, and virtually everyone in israel doesn't agree with the idea of a 2 state solution. now, in terms of the political plans, i've spent bolden decade covering the un. and every single month, there's a meeting, they discussed the middle east and every single member of the security council, the 50 and talk about a 2 state solution. and then these really on best to get something doesn't mention it at all. no one ever calls him out for it. why does the international community never cool out? the fact that they do not have a pot? and if a piece in israel will, because then then the illusion would put completely fall apart. i mean, the pretense um, the whole idea of a 2 state solution is based on this pretense that you have 2 partners, 2 even equal partners. that's part of the mythology. right?
9:53 pm
that, that there's some symmetry between the occupier unoccupied. and so they, they need to maintain this pretense in order to sustain the idea of 2 states because they have no alternative to let go of a 2 state solution would mean one of 2 things, either they except and endorsed essentially the apartheid reality that exists on the ground as it is, or they would have to push for something entirely different. uh, that is one stage based on the quality for everyone who lives between the jordan river and the mediterranean sea. and that's not something they're willing to do because it is so vis, certainly opposed by, by israel's government. but later, how could you, even if israel agreed to the idea which they don't have a 2 state solution? it's been built on. the west bank has been built on, there's a message was massive fortified. we say settlements, but some of the towns and villages and city blocks urban school. how to now create
9:54 pm
to state. so the absolutely, i mean, even if we were to take this concept that face value and suspend reality for a moment and to spend everything i just said, uh, you know, i sometimes compare it to imagine if you were living in a house and you know, it is real granted, you know, middle autonomy over the bathrooms, palestinians, and a part of the garage right? while retaining, maintaining control over the entire no excess between the 2, but not only with no access between the 2, but perhaps even restricting your supply of toilet paper. and at any point, you know, reserving the right to enter and shop both of those places. all so you're right, it really doesn't take much other than looking out a map, forget about as a for a 2nd. looking at a map of the west bank understanding that there are more than $500.00 obstacles, military checkpoints, and barriers scattered throughout uh, you know, slot that apart. payments to compare that to swiss cheese. uh, obviously once talked about the concept of negotiating over pizza when israel was continuously eating and eating the pizza as you were negotiating. not only is it not contiguous,
9:55 pm
but over 82 percent of the west bank is coming. all of it is occupied, controlled, and effective, an export, 82 percent is areas b and c, which are effectively both controlled either in full or impart militarily and simply and so on, so forth by as well, leaving this fraction of an area that, that has nominal autonomy so what exactly are we negotiating over? and even if we were to also take that at face value and just suspend that for a 2nd. why then as i say the people that you will be negotiating with, right? because perhaps you don't want to to state solution. i'm pretty, pretty clear to me. i caught it. we have to 2 candidates here. the can you see and the seeing what they all say that could move things forward. not really. i think the 2 campaigns have avoided um, any kind of specificity on this issue for, for obvious reasons, because it's a lightning rod issue. we, we've seen the kind of protests that have happened over the last year. and a large segments, especially of the democratic constituency,
9:56 pm
are very upset about the dividing administration's support for israel throughout, throughout all of these, the atrocities over the past year. and, and, and this is something that the for harris is, is something that she's only going to address in the most and general way. because on the one hand, she cannot distance herself from her boss. the president is, she can't articulate an entirely different position. and, and, and, and as far as donald trump is concerned, he also doesn't want to touch stage issue of palestine and palestinians, other than to articulate total support for netanyahu meant to finish the job. and that sort of general rhetoric. because he has his own inside the republican constituency. there is a overwhelming support for israel to continue the onslaught in gaza. and so neither
9:57 pm
side is going to say anything beyond the most the most general. but that's not to say that they will be the same as uh, as custodians over the use. your issue is, you know, in the case that they become president, i think a trump administration would be actually considerably more damaging to palestinians on the ground. one example would be, for example, the, the state of underwent, we already see the attacks on the right now. and i think the under a trump administration on, or i would, would absolutely be dismantled, science. you very much for your time, call it and later thoughts to hear about this. it's very as a 1st thing to do with the, the, the region of the mountain. very, very depressing discussion. that's it for now from washington, dc i, which is there is comprehensive coverage. the selection continues. but right now, back to the highlander, thanks for those changes. the cost will continue to defend with the election with you in washington, or how's the day progresses? moving on the fi, works at home during the volley celebrations of wes and already pull at quality in
