narenda modi seeking the blessings of his mother. he mentioned his mother in blessings in many speeches. there she is giving him special blessing with hindu festivities behind them of course. and this will of course go down quite well with those that support the bjp. that's hindu nationalist agenda they have. the question of whether controversy will playing narenda modi or whether they'll be focused on economic front is what's going to be interesting now to look ahead in india. we're still getting the numbers rolling in. we've had the verdict on modi's own seat where he's got a record. we've got the record result for modi's own seats where he's got

a huge victory over his nearest rival. also we're hearing about who might be in any sort of government, who will take the finance post. that are will help shape the future direction of india. geeta, first things first. just to mention the importance of what you saw there. the press conference at the bjp headquarters on a five minute drive from where we are at the parliament building. those key members you saw, the president, deputy leader of opposition in the upper house amid the former leader of the bjp in president i say as well. these men are going to become familiar faces to indians in the coming months and indeed years as bjp start to finalize the cabinet, how the upper house is going to look and indeed how the

lower house is going to look. results still the moment. particularly slow i've got to say after we've got the leads about a landslide victory hours ago. the electoral commission saying nine seats have gone to bjp so far of numbers that have been counted. congress reported as winning one. we're a long way from finding out the full make up of 543 up for grabs. it seems by early projection leads, the party led by modi have, we think, got 266 seats in the league there giving them in essence a majority to rule here in india. when we were looking at press conference, it was interesting some of the lines of information

he said the bjp are the only party to exceed more seats in congress, referring to 1984, the complete sweep by the then prime minister gandhi. he made certain there would be crossing religious cast and political divides. the reason that's so important is because the politics of the bjp and in particular their leader modi have been in the sp spotlight the past last few weeks. he's the leader of the group rss and also rhetoric of bjp we see has been hard line. people are fearful if those

politics will be divided or include all the party. they mention women, empowerment of women and how they address issues. we should say women turn out in elections and have outnumbered men in some states. that's important coming up. >> many thanks indeed. let's go to mumbai now. first of all, on the numbers on the market and international record in a financial sense, these results. >> reporter: well, geeta, at the markets we've seen a record high today across the 25,000 mark. we just really begin. it's something we've seen over the past week. increasing now in india's financial capital. the questions asked given it seemed clear bjp and allies are

coloneling to par with majority increasingly the question asked what are expectations where them. here with me the director of finance. you're a member of the business community and about to head one of the business bodies. >> they were looking for strong leadership to have a team to form decisions. that was lacking for the last couple of years. the feel from the family, someone to have a team to insure and deliver what was required for the development of the country. >> do you think modi and his government will be able to do that? >> i think so. he has been a strong leader in one of the state as. i think he is deflecting that image of that leader. there's expectation he should be

able to do it. >> at a level given to implement economic policy as a prime minister or at the central government you do need to get other leaders and states on board. is it going to be that easy to implement? >> india is not an easy country. key is if there's a good leader. leadership quality is not linked. if there's a good leader, if he takes along his people, he has to work with the chief minister in every state. the activity happens at the state level. you have to work together. >> you work with billions of. that's why investors are scared to enter the country. do you think modi can clear those hurdles?

so much depends on the state government. >> i agree completely. that's the expect from interacting with him, his team and members. they are going to work with the states to try and find solutions. just is center cannot do all in the country. it has to be grass root level. all people have to work with leadership at the state level. we have seen most of the states have what they call bjp so you will see and we expect that we will see that positiveness and issues. >> the sentiment clearly is very positive. he will be watched closely both here and outside the country, people looking at india as an investment destination to see whether he can deliver on all big promises he and his party have been making throughout the campaign. >> can i ask you two big

questions politically. he was said to be a finance minister. he's not done well in his own seat. how will that affect things? i'm hearing to be an official opposition party you need 10%. congress might got get that. is that right? >> reporter: well yes. we don't have the final results. we need to see the final results and then might figure out who the opposition is going tonight. that is extremely crucial in any democracy. we might have a partial government. you also need a good opposition. as far as the country -- the lower house of parliament you have elected members. the upper house of parliament he has members. if he was tipped to be somebody -- some were saying he

might be the finance government. there's a way into the government if he loses election or loses his seat. we'll have to see how it pans out within their party and allies when the final states come today. >> many thanks indeed. we'll be back to you. thank you. we'll go now to reaction. for the smaller parties, in a way the fact bjp gets a massive vote share, it gives them much less inference. in the past we had politics. >> we have indeed. she will be happy because she swept 42 seats. you can see her flags behind me at the moment. she would have thought she would be a key member in the coalition government. we're not going to have that

this time. when we were talking about developing relations with the state, she's been the biggest critic of modi during the course of the campaign. at times calling him a donkey and other times describing him mr. right. there's been a lot of bad words between the two. it will be interesting to see how modi deals with the chief minister of the state that has 100 million people. >> we're covering this congress versus the bjp. many places like south india and regional parties incredibly complex aren't they? >> they are. i was down in the center where people were watching the results come in on big screens specially put up. first thing they looked at regional result. then they started looking at who was going to win in delhi and

then started looking at their parties. there's many parts of the country did that not buy his message and vote for bjp. the situation is different in rural india. it's not about providing jobs. it's electricity and clean drinking water. modi has challenges. in a way his mandate makes it hr difficult. he has no excuses to be brought in by other parties. he has a clear mandate. let's see what he does with it. >> not directly where you are but the bangladesh migrant question has been one modi has been talking about. just explain how that might play out now. >> he said very clearly when he was campaigning in the state and

he did effectively because his party won three to four seats, he did say he would remove illegal immigrants from the state on the day he became prime minister. that led to a war of words. the chief minister said he was signaling. that was a sensitive issue. mr. modi began to backtrack later. he is the prime minister of yand, has regional powers as well. effectively how he deals with that is an issue to see what he'll do. >> thanks very much indeed. just to repeat. the president of the bjp has been speaking the last hour. he got the victory of his party as a broad mandate from across the country. >> we have crossed the geographical, political and social boundary and obtained

top stories. supporters of india's bjp party are celebrating. early results just a landslide victory. modi is set to become india's new prime minister. the owner of the turkish mind where 280 died in the explosion has denied negligence defending the safety record. now nigeria's president goodluck johnson has cancelled a visit to the town where 200 school girls were abducted a month ago. he had been set to make a meeting since the girls were abducted. we are at the capital with gabriel. what reason has been given for this cancellation? >> none has been given. they never officially announced they were going. security has to be the reason. it was clear preparations were made speaking to local officials

in the area. they said the president was coming. the problem was it was so widely trailed in the media that i think the president's officials and security decided it's not worth it in security terms. the military's grip on security in the borno state and two other north eastern states is guarded by boko haram. indeed president johnson will make his way to paris where he'll take part with summit leaders on trying to find new responses from threats to boko haram which frankly hasn't been dealt with at all really up until now. >> what do we know about the international help promised on the search for the girls? >> the u.s. is providing surveillance and uk is also. we saw a spokesman for the state department saying there were concerns about the actions of

the nigerian army and we couldn't expect wider support from the nigerian army under the circumstances at moment. the support for nigeria is limited to try to find the girls. i think what will happen at the summit in paris is address the broader threat from boko haram affecting not just nigeria but neighboring countries as well. >> gabriel, thanks a lot. the death toll from a mine explosion in turkey is expected to reach more than 300 with 80 still trapped underground. 284 are confirmed dead. there's a press conference held for the first time since the disaster. the owner has denied any negligence. >> all of my revenues i have reinvested into my business to include the living standards of my working colleagues. and to help insure that we prevent or try to minimize any

work place accidents and improve work place safety. >> we have been following developments in soma. >> the minister early this morning sent out a tweet saying 284 were confirmed dead and 18 unaccounted for. he said they'll finish with 302 dead meaning implication is that those 18 are dead. there's also a lot of confusion in the press conference about whether there were rescue chambers in the mine. at the beginning of the press conference, the mine owner said there were two. under later questions they admitted one of the chambered had been dismantled because they were going to move it somewhere else. so there may have only been one

rescue chamber. they meant there would be no one left in the rescue chamber this. incident took place extraordinarily quickly. within three to five minutes the fire spread through certain areas and fumes filled up the areas. to the extent even if the rescue chamber was operational, the miners may not have been able to get to the chambers because they were overcome by fumes extraordinarily quickly. just to remind you of our top story today. there are celebrations in india from the bjp party as narenda modi cruises to a victory from the country's general election. there's modi seeking blessings from his mother who puts hands on his head to bless him and give him sweets. an auspicious moment. that will very much signal the

mammoth nine phase general election with a record turnout of 66%. a our correspondent is outside bjp headquarters in delhi. >> the record turnout in any indian election that are would almost tell you supporters send a strong 9k,,çmessage. i traveled across the country starting south, west and north. it's interesting to see in places bjp never had a presence, states in the south, all of these places which are voted in a few bjp today. that tells you about the fact the people were in the mood for a change. it tells you it was very much a narenda modi victory. we've seen a campaign like no other in india. a campaign centered around one man that absolutely went ahead with a massive campaign across

unaccounted for. the implication is that the 18 are dead. they haven't responded c categorically about that question. there are questions about the rescue chambers in the tmine. it was first said there were two, but later it was said one had been dismantled and may have been only one rescue chamber. the chambers were such you could get to the surface if you could get to the rescue chamber meaning no one would be lift in the rescue chamber. this took place extraordinarily quickly. within three to five minutes the fire spread through certain areas and fumes filled up those areas. to the extent even if rescue chambers were operational, miners may not have been able to get to the chambers because they
