hello. i'm ros atkins here on "bbc world news." our lead story is that indonesian officials have confirmed that debris spotted by search teams is from the missing airasia plane. at least 40 bodies have been pulled from the sea. 162 people were onboard when the plane vanished. in other news two albanian seamen have died while trying to secure the ferry that caught fire in the adriatic sea. the first person diagnosed with ebola while in the uk was taken to a london hospital for specialist treatment.

a big story in the cricketing world. the indian captain ms dhoni says he's retiring from test cricket. in the last few minutes, it has been confirmed in indonesia that the debris seen in the java sea is from the missing airasia plane. search and rescue teams say they've recovered 40 bodies, which were found floating near the wreckage. the flight disappeared on sunday while heading from surabaya in indonesia to singapore, 162 people onboard. the box here on the map shows the search area, and this is the part of the sea from which the wreckage has been recovered. these are some of the images of debris, which have been found there. analysts say they are the size

and the shape that you would expect if they had come from an aircraft. their color also appears to be consistent with airasia's livery. let's go live now to surabaya and the bbc's clive myrie. >> reporter: a press conference is just about to begin involving the president of indonesia, joko widodo, and we understand tony fernandez, the boss of airasia. in the last literally 15 minutes, 20 minutes or so, confirming that search teams have now made it clear that the debris found in the java sea is that of that missing airasia plane. let's just hear what is going on. >> translator: hello, citizens

10:40 am
it wasn't a long press conference, but there were some important details. first of all, the confirmation that we knew was coming, that the missing airasia flight has crashed into the java sea off the coast. much of the debris and the bodies that have been found are southwest of the location, the last location that the plane had contact with air traffic control. tomorrow, once the sun is up, ships and helicopters will continue the search. president widodo made mention of singapore, malaysia, and australia, and all the other countries who have helped in this search. the families of the crew and the passengers who are aboard the flight, he said be strong when facing this difficult moment. there was absolutely no discussion of the cause of the crash. he repeatedly said that is all i can say tonight. he did mention that in the area where the debris is found, there have been two to three meter-high waves. suggesting that they could hamper efforts to collect both the bodies of those onboard and also the wreckage. and he promised more technical details, to use his phrase, from the national search and rescue agency in indonesia when they have it.
10:41 am
that was what the indonesian president had to say. you can follow this story online as you watch us here on "bbc world news." you'll find our live page on the story at bbc.com/news. let's turn our attention now to the ferry disaster in the adriatic sea. authorities in albania are saying that two sailors have been killed while trying to secure that ferry, which caught fire while sailing from greece to italy. the two sailors were hit by a cable they were trying to attach to the vessel. in other developments, officials say they've now completed the evacuation of the boat. but there's still an awful lot of uncertainty about exactly who was onboard. let me run you through what we know and what we don't know. we know that ten people lost their lives and that the rescue operation was hampered by strong winds and high waves. so we don't know if the weather contributed to the fire. we know 437 people were rescued from the ferry, some by helicopter, many more by ships that happened to be in the area. but this is when it gets confusing. the list of people onboard that
10:42 am
vessel has 478 names on it. clearly, that leaves a substantial number of people who are unaccounted for, and as if that weren't confusing enough, listen to this. some of those who survived were not on the passenger list. well, our correspondent james reynolds has been leading our coverage of this story. he's in the italian port of brindisi and he's been looking at the numerical challenges facing the authorities. >> reporter: it's a puzzle for them and a headache, because the numbers, the way they stand at the moment, just don't add up. they don't make sense. the passenger manifest, the official list of passengers who are onboard the ferry compiled by the ferry company, has changed several times in recent days. the most accurate number we seem to have been given is 478. the trouble is this. that number, 478 does not match italy's final tally from the rescue, which stands at 437, including ten people who died. they're trying to work out why on earth there is a discrepancy of 41 names.
10:43 am
there could be several reasons for this. it may simply be that the original manifest was wrong. it might be people booked the trip and didn't show up. it might be that people's names are written twice. it might also be that when the ship made a first stop on a greek island, some people got on, some people got off and numbers were not properly updated. but the reason why the italian authorities have taken this very, very seriously is that they need those numbers to match, to make sure that there are no bodies missing on the ferry. now, we have a number of stories developing at the moment. let me bring you up to date on news coming in from state television in greece, which is reporting that a ship off greek island of corfu has sent a distress signal saying there are suspected armed people onboard. state tv has given no further details except to say that illegal immigrants were involved in the situation on the ship. that's all we have at the moment. as and when we get more information, we'll bring it to you here on the bbc.
10:44 am
and another story that we're trying to get more details on are unconfirmed reports coming in from gambia of a possible attempted coup. heavy gunfire is being reported overnight in the capital with some reports saying the coup has been foiled. let's try to work out what's going on with richard hamilton, our africa editor from the bbc world service. we've been following this the last couple of hours. there's an awful lot of unqualified information out there. what can you tell us? >> yeah, i'm afraid we're still having to piece things together, because state media is saying one thing, saying that an attempted coup has been foiled. whereas opposition media, which is mainly outside the country, are talking about a mutiny that attacked the presidential palace and had some success. so it's really too early to say whether there's even been a coup attempt. back in 2006, there were allegations of a coup attempt
10:45 am
and the heads of the army and navy were put on trial. but critics were saying that the allegations were trumped up in order for the president to get rid of his opponents. so it may never be clear whether this was a coup attempt or not. >> we know that the president's not there, is that right? >> that's right. he's out of the country. he was in france, but the latest reports suggest that he may have flown either to senegal, a neighboring country, or maybe in dubai. so even that's not completely clear. but he was out of the country when this alleged coup attempt happened. and he himself came to power 20 years ago in our military coup. >> okay, thank you very much for the update. as and when we get clearer information here on that story, you'll hear it on "bbc world news." now let's turn to iraq, because government security forces are saying that the army and tribal allies have recaptured a town northeast of baghdad and killed nearly 300 islamic state militants. we've got no independent confirmation of these reports,
10:46 am
but according to these government sources, a large group of militants were trapped in a northern neighborhood of a town called dhuluya before the military and its allies managed to overrun the whole area. stay with us here on "bbc world news." in a few minutes time, we're going to go to russia, because a leading anti-kremlin critic has been convicted of fraud. he says it's all about politics. rance premium every month on the dot. you're like the poster child for paying on time. and then one day you tap the bumper of a station wagon. no big deal... until your insurance company jacks up your rates. you freak out. what good is having insurance if you get punished for using it? hey insurance companies, news flash. nobody's perfect. for drivers with accident forgiveness, liberty mutual won't raise your rates due to your first accident. see car insurance in a whole new light. liberty mutual insurance.

more than 20,000 people have been infected with ebola and there have been at least 7,000 deaths. the real figure is likely to be higher. this latest case, a reminder that even with the best precautions, wherever people travel, viruses do, too. now, let's talk about ms dhoni, an indian cricketing legend. the team's test cricket captain until, well, a few hours ago. he's decided to retire from test cricket. he made his debut back in 2005. he was captain for 60 of his 90 tests, an incredible record. let's go live now to delhi and we can speak to our correspondent. this man goes beyond being a player, he's almost a statesman, isn't he? >> well, yes. ms dhoni, as expected and has been his style over the years, he's been a huge surprise for not only fans but also cricket analysts throughout the world. that's been a hallmark of his

cricketing career for about a decade playing for india. there's no doubt about the fact that he will definitely go down in history as one of the most successful captains ever in international cricket. more so for india, because under his captaincy, the cricket world cup in 2011 after a gap of 28 years, and he also led india to victory in the inaugural world cup. and yes, his styles, his moves and his strategy has been questioned all along the last seven, eight years that he's been captain. but the fact remains that he had success in all forms of the game, and that's why he actually grew in stature. >> the thing we've got to emphasize here is that while he won't be playing the five-day version of cricket, it's not like we're going to see him in action. he's staying around for a few years yet.
10:55 am
>> yes, he's staying around for a few years. and his fans may see him very soon in the cricket world cup, which is going to happen in australia and new zealand very soon in a month's time from now. and he has no intention of retiring from the t-20 format either, which means that he's also going to be playing in the rich indian premier league. so he has plenty of cricket left in him. as per analysts. and this is what he's decided to focus more on, the shorter formats, rather than the daunting task of playing a five-day test match and leading the team. india have not been doing very well either in test cricket. >> good to speak to you life from delhi. just before we wrap up this half an hour of "bbc world news," let me remind you that in this half an hour, the president of indonesia joko widodo, who you can see here, has given a statement on the missing airasia plane.
