and data recorders that could give clues as to the cause of the crash. search teams from a number of countries have been looking for the jet since it went missing the 28 t of december. it was on route from indonesia to singapore with 162 on board. our correspondent is following the developments. >> the first images of the missing airasia plane stuck in the murky waters of the java sea. these pictures taken by an underwater robot indonesia search teams deployed to find wreckage. officials say this is a major break through. >> i am confident this is part of the tail from the evidence these images we see on the screen. a tail section is visitable visible

with letters air x and numbers on it. >> this warship has been in the waters the better part of the last week looking for signs of wreckage. countries from around the world have pitched in to find parts of the missing plane. aviation an are lists say this could provide important clues about what caused the crash. >> the tail is significant because that's where the black box is going to be. this is having two things at once. we can see the tail the physical state of it have an idea on what may have happened. we'll pull out the black boxes and see whether it matches. it's a significant break through. the families public have been a waiting this moment for part of the main wreck being found on the sea floor. this is a good news in a way. now the investigation can go to next step. >> getting the tail out of the

for big boss at european central bank. the fear for the eurozone is it doesn't follow the path we saw japan go down. year after year japan suffered deflation. so it's really now on the shoulders of the european central bank what will they do. we've been expecting the european central bank -- or we were. this certainly will cement this. they'll kick start a huge stimulus program something the likes of here in the uk state of easing qe and united states. the eurozone needs consumers to spend and businesses to spend and invest. they're likely going to quick start this stimulus program by the end of the month. >> the european central bank has been criticized for not doing enough quickly. >> exactly. they've done little bond or debt

purchases but not inactenacted a serious program like the uk and u.s. >> this is linked with oil prices something we've talked about all week. >> we're going to continue. the experts say you'll likely see prices fall further. the experts told me it's a mug's game to predict. i don't think it's far fetched to see $45 a barrel. oil prices continue to drop. the big story today is that crude dropped below the $50 a barrel mark. there are winners and losers around the world. typically us as consumers go yea, cheaper petro and emergency costs. those that import oil, yes they're seeing benefits. losers would be oil producing countries. russia for example, for every $1 is dropped in the barrel of oil, russia loses $2 billion in

revenue. the place of a barrel of oil has dropped more than half in the past six months. venezuela is an example of a big producer. it needs the price to be $120 a barrel to balance its budget. many of the middle eastern producers need it to be $80-85. >> it's around the $70 mark. >> they have deep pockets. they've got big pockets to withstand lower prices the for some time. other nations venezuela, russia for example which announced yesterday it's increasing production. there's going to be more oil out there. supply and demand. the oil is a wash with oil while demand is down. it's a simple occasionther occasion. we'll continue to see prices

fall. >> as always, thank you. now the oil giant shell has agreed to pay a nigerian fishing city million of for an oil spill in 2008. this happened in the southern nigerian delta. this ends a three year battle. >> reporter: it's been a david and go light battle with impoverished fishing communities taking on the international oil giant shell. the argument was all about two major oil spills in 2008. the river has been polluted for decades by numerous disasters. in this community it became impossible to earn a living from fishing and farming. the legal dispute lasted three years. shell has agreed out of court to pay more than $80 million in

compensation. the law firm representing the community says over the next few weeks thousands of fishermen and others that live there will receive $3,000 u.s. each. $30 million will go to the community. >> when the incident occurred in 2008 we immediately wanted to start clean up and pay compensation. this was hindered by some of the exaggerated claims that has dragged the case out this long. finally we have come to an agreement. >> every year there are hundreds of spills in the delta. many when seas cross into the pipelines. court documents show before the spills shell employees were concerned the pipelines hadreached the end of their lives and needed replacing. the law firm representing the people say the initial compensation offered to the

entire community was as long as $6,000. >> people here say they hope the $30 million payment to the community is going to be used to improve their health care education, even their water supply. surely things that should have been taken care of by successive governments. it's a reminder the people of the niga delta and the rest of this country have been let down so many years. >> amnesty international describes oil pollution in the delta as one of the biggest corporate scandals of our time. it could take a up to 30 years to clean up the oil spills there. with shell agreeing to pay compensation, more cases against the oil giants is inevitable. at least 20 are missing and feared dead after a landslide hit a mine. the mine is notorious for risky

voice recorder attached to it. that shouldn't be too much of difficult in retrieving once of course we get it out of the mud. we have to wait and see. it would be run of the factors that has prevented these devices from sending out a equivalent distress message. it would be one of the reasons it's not being heard. >> given what this plane has been through, given what we're hearing now that the tail is buried in the mud, the plane is apparently upside down. is there a chance these black box recorders are damaged in any

way? >> there's always a possibility that in the force of the crash that the data recorder or cockpit voice recorder were damaged. we can't tell that until we bring them to the surface and try to start analyzing them. the possibility is -- they're electronic now days the flight data recorder and voice recorder. they're micro ships. there's always a possibility they can become damaged in the force of the accident. until such a time as we do retrieve them, we won't know that. >> chris, assume that they can be retrieved, that we can access the material the, information on them. what information does that provide?

the cockpit voice record per will record all of the conversations between the pilots and co-pilots between the pilots co-pilots and ground. they will also contain the ambien noise within the cockpit. that can often times tell us far more than perhaps the data recorder can. for example, the break up of the aircraft and such will be recorded. >> aviation expert there, chris yates. we have a special section on our website about this whole operation. stay with us for that. check it out you need more information. a former governor of the u.s. state of virginia mcdonald has been jailed two years for corruption. he was found guilty in september for accepting bribes in return

significance because it was this tiny house, a townhouse without no neighbor townhouses. behind it the twin towers. this is a very special place ground zero. i was cautioned the church became the only non secular building in the whole area. coming from vermont, i like this idea. it was the decision of everybody. we are the greek orthodox church of america. we rebuild this church with american stones. i was trying to do a building modern in a way reflected the the vision of the orthodox. this is presenting the model of

through, but can you bring us up to date on what we know? >> reporter: this is a recent attack. the dead and injured ready still being counted. we're getting reports. one television station is suggesting 10 may have died. police are confirming one at the moment. the paris town hall says six people has been seriously injured. this is a very fluid situation that could well rise. one journalist here in france spoke to someone inside the offices of charlie hebdo. they said in their minds it was a massacre because several were already dead. >> it's all fluid at the moment. of course charlie hebdo has been a weekly magazine rather controversial in the past. remind us of the details about this material magazine. >> that's right. it has published controversial

content. it's a satirical magazine that likes to push the magazine. last year molotov cocktails were thrown at the headquarters. couple of years ago the magazine published characters of the mohammed causing outrage in the community here. >> lucy do we know the location of the magazine? where has it been attacked? do we know exactly where this place is? >> reporter: well there are two key locations for the magazine. the initial reports are this is happening in the 11th fairly central a inside the city here. the initial reports are there were perhaps two gunmen carrying automatic weapons. they fired perhaps 30 shots and then fled in a car still firing.

news. within the past half hour in paris. one person is reportsed to have been killed and 10 injured in the french satirical magazine office of charlie hebdo. local media is saying as many as ten may have died. french prosecutors suggesting as many as ten were killed in this attack. charlie hebdo is often a controversial magazine a satirical publication. it was fire bombed in 2011 after it published cartoons about the profit mohamed. this is a violent attack. lucy williamson brought me the latest we know. >> the dead and injure ready still counted as i speak to you. we are getting reports one french television station is reporting ten have died. police are confirming one at the

offices of this magazine. it's a satirical weekly. it's drawn repeated threats for the characters that it printed in the magazine of the profit mohamed among other sketches. it attacks various religions. in particular it's the characters of the profit mohamed it published in 2011 that drew a lot of criticism. this attack we have no details who is behind it. we do know ten people certainly, according to french prosecutors, have been killed. roiters saying 11 have been killed. five people are critically wounded in this attack. we're seeing images outside the

offices. this is very interesting. this is the 11th mont not just offices but a presidential homes in this area. very, very central location of paris. very metropolitan cosmopolitan area of paris that's highly densely populated. a large number of offices and a large number of private residential areas as well. we can bring you now for the first time live images of outside the offices of charlie hebdo. the offices have within just under an hour ago were attacked. 11 people reported dead in these attacks. two people fled in vehicles after these attacks. security operations there which will no doubt be increased by

the news the french president is to come and visit this location. police officials say yes, 11 people are dead in the shooting. we're getting quotes from the head of the communications for the paris police. he has confirmed the 11 deaths so far. the french president hollande is reported to be on his way to the scene of this devastating attack on this satirical weekly newspaper, weekly magazine. it has had repeated threats on it for characters it published of the profit mohamed among other controversial sketches. it's a renowned magazine for

talking about different religions. just getting a clearer indication of the area of where this magazine offices are located. these are live images coming to the bbc just in the after math of that attack. 11 people killed in this attack. that is news that is being confirmed by the head of communications through the paris police confirming that 11 people killed in these attacks. i know of five people critically injured. what is interesting is that this is a densely populated area. an area near the area well known for many of its bars restaurants, offices, cosmopolitan area many start up

companies. many many residential flats as well in this area of paris. this is the map indicating where the charlie hebdo offices are. our correspondent in the bbc newsroom here in london is monitoring this for us. just devastating confirmation of 11 deaths at charlie hebdo. >> right. the police themselves actually saying 11 have been killed. they're also saying 10 others have been injured inside the building, five of whom are in critical condition. this is clearly an extremely serious attack. there are eyewitnesses quoted saying they saw several of the gunmen going into the building earlier storming the building and then hearing a large number of gunshots. other eyewitnesses say they

actually saw the gunmen then leaving. apparently reports saying they left in vehicles driving away. we must stress at this stage this is unconfirmed. what we do know for sure is that 11 have been killed and 10 injured. >> it's absolutely devastating for this french satirical magazine. it has caught controversy in the past. of course it's rather satirical take on news current affairs and publications of cartoons joking on leaders making it a target in the past. nothing as serious as this. we do not though -- it's important to stress -- we do not know who is behind this attack. >> we don't. as you say, it has been attacked in the past. in 2011 it was fire bombed.

then last year, there were petro bombs thrown at the building. there have been previous attacks. in 2011 that was after the say the tir tir kal -- satirical car toons were published. we have no idea who was responsible for this attack. >> this has taking place in the 11th strict. it's a densely populated area. it's got lots of people living there as well as start up companies, a fashionable area as well. devastating for this part of paris. >> yes of course. it's right in the heart of the french capital. it seems if the eyewitness accounts we're hearing, if those are correct, the gunman managed to break into the building very very easily and carry out this attack. it seems almost with spite of

the other attacks. they were known to be a target at any time. the gun men managed to get in and carry out attack with devastating consequences. >> witnesses speaking about the sustained gunfire at these offices as the attackers opened fire with assault rifles. these are eyewitness accounts which unfortunately we can't confirm at the moment. just something that we do know 11 people killed if in this attack. >> that's right. that's what the police have now confirmed. the numbers have been going up. initially the police would only confirm one person has been killed and several injured. that has gone right up as you say to 11 with a number of others injured. they're obviously concerned about five of those who are in particularly critical condition.

it's a very high death toll already. >> and we know that president hollande is expected to visit this location. we're seeing a high security operation just outside the offices. president hollande france's president, due to visit this location shortly. >> that's right. that's been announced the president will go to the location. apparently he has also said that there will be an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss what has happened and obviously how the security forces will react. >> now we are getting some details. this is obviously just taking place in the past hour or so. we are hearing about these reports of the rocket launcher that opened fire on these offices. france's prosecutor saying at this stage ten people are dead. we are getting reports of 11

people. now the deputy mayor of paris saying that six people are seriously injured including a policeman. we were not clear of these figures earlier. we're hearing reports that six people are injured. >> that's right. certainly eyewitnesses have been quoted as saying they saw the men who went in to carry out this attack going in with automatic rifles. some saying they were. all of this we have to keep stressing is not confirmed. a police officer had gone in when the attack took place reacting to the sound of the gunfire and was apparently injured. we don't have further details at this stage. >> of course details changing by the moment as you imagine in this situation developing within the past hour. president hollande has arrived

at the scene, a desperately sad day for paris and desperately sad day for france. we'll see if we can hear what he is saying at the moment. >> this is barbaric the french president is saying. >> translator: against a newspaper. a newspaper needs free speech who have always endeavored to show that in france it can operate to defend their ideas. and to have this liberty that the public protects. there are policemen to protect them. here journalists and security people were cowardly assassinated. as i speak to you, 11 people

died and four are in critical condition. we don't have the final toll of the victims. but we have about people who are protected. in the next few hours, we'll have the final toll. at 14 hours local time i will have the officials meeting who are in charge of protection. we have to reassure protection in all locations so that the same act could not happen again by barbaric people. we have engaged the highest security level.

there are security measures that have been launched to apprehend the assailants of this attack. they have to be arrested and brought before justice. france today faced a shock which is assassination operation by terrorists against a newspaper that has been threatened several times and that's why we have to give it protection it needed. we should show that we are a united country. we have acted as we have to. bearing in mind national unity. this behavior and my determination along the next few days and weeks. once again, i will have to

address the french people. i have said it. we are in an extremely difficult circumstances and days. so many attempted assassination attempts past few weeks. we are threatened because we're a country of liberty. because we're a country of liberty, we face the threats and will punish assailants and aggressors. nobody can think they can behave in france against the republic and harm the spirit of the public which is a newspaper. today i'm thinking about the victims for 11 are dead four are facing death and life. we should do whatever we can and recall national unity. thank you. >> so president hollande there, the french president who reached the scenes of this attack on the

satirical newspaper. quickly just to underline how central this attack was. the president saying that this attack was an attack on the liberty and freedom of speech of france. confirming 11 have been killed in this attack and four are critically injured facing life and death in his words. just to remind anybody joining us this attack on this satirical newspaper offices of charlie hebdo, in the center of paris. anybody familiar with paris knows this is an incredible central location a place where incredibly densely populated. not just businesses but also residential private homes. our correspondent who knows the area well we can speak to him

now. hugh it's remarkable how central this attack is and how it can take place in the heart of paris. >> well yes it is central. it's part of the small city once inside the ring road. it's in the heart of the city. that's where life is, where newspapers are and where this magazine was. i mean it is something which has traumatized the people of france paris. i see now they've raised the level of the terrorism alert up to its highest notch in paris. there are two men on the run. really, that's a traumatic event. yes

>> yes. details just coming in. two men armed, according to sources, with automatic weapons stormed the magazine offices. 11 dead, four critically hurt. the terror alert for paris very much increased. >> yes. a lot of questions are asked about charlie hebdo. people knew it was a potential target because it was the magazine in 2011 had the premises ransacked after it published pictures of mohamed. they know about the willingness to take on islam just as it takes on christianity and judaism. it marks all religions. there was a level of protection
