and it couldn't be better weather, it really couldn't be. james haspel among those arriving here. i think they are in for a feast. may refer in a little more detail later on to the kind of service we can be looking forward to. i can tell you one thing right now without giving away too many secrets, the music in today's service is absolutely sublime. a very broad range of music but it is a real treat. so let's look forward to that as well. >> thank you, hugh. we've seen the guests file in now through the south door to george's chapel. we saw the first actual members of the royal family, oprah winfrey. >> it is interesting, isn't it. we were watching earl spencer talking to oprah winfrey and we saw james haspel come and that gives you an indication of the real cross-section of british
1:39 pm
and international society that makes this a wedding like no other. we have not seen really this sort of snapshot before that gives us an indication of the type of people the couple mixed with and the kinds of things they're interested in personally and socially. as we watch the guests filter in we get a real sense of the couple who are at the center of the occasion today. >> announcer: stay tuned for more of prince harry and meghan markle's royal wedding on bbc america.

1:44 pm
organization, rhino conservation botswana, and to my surprise he got really interested and then i discovered that he was a conservationist, enjoyed conservation, understood what it meant to the people of the world to have conservation and so we got talking about rhino conservation and rhino conservation in our country. >> he's quite hands on, isn't he? >> we've done a number of operations together, hands on with the rhinos. we also work with people. he's particularly interested in the links between people and wildlife and in our case rhinos, yes. >> he's described botswana as his second home and we know that a couple of weeks, three or four weeks into his relationship with meghan they slept under the stars in botswana. what is it about botswana that makes it such a beautiful place? >> well, i don't know, very friendly people, wide open
1:45 pm
spaces, absolutely magnificent country side, and the leadership that is very pragmatic, very concerned about wildlife. it's just a wonderful, wonderful place on earth. >> how do you think prince harry will be feeling right now? >> i don't know. i can't comment really on that but i imagine, like anybody on his wedding day, he'll be a touch nervous. but he's a confident individual. i imagine he'll get through it okay. >> and you're a very smart man. am i right in asking you when i say is this the first time you've worn a suit? >> i think you would be right. i've worn a jacket and tie before but not often a suit. i'm more comfortable in my uniform of rhino conservation man. >> you look fantastic. have an amazing day. >> tha you for talking to me. i will have an amazing day. it's a privilege. >> matt, early contender f beard of the wedding. >> pretty cool. >> with us to change the
1:46 pm
changing perceptions of the royal family and royal broadcasting and social commentator. great to have you with us. >> amazing to be here. >> you look guest ready. >> thank you. you know, we are at the wedding. >> absolutely. we're outside the world's oldest inhabited castle. what kind of difference to the royal family do you think the modern meghan markle will make? >> i think that the challenge for the royal family is how to be a family that represents very old-fashioned values of privilege in a society that's about equality of opportunity and multi-culturalism. i think that meghan markle is certainly someone who represents the latter. she has become successful through her own talent and hard work. she's used her celebrity to champion causes that she's passionate about and also as a woman of mixed heritage, she hasn't shied away from speaking about that. she's owned it. for me as a black woman of mixed heritage myself, there's been a
1:47 pm
lot of pressure in my lifetime that you're entering spaces that previously have been wide to downplay your identity. she represents a willingness to not minimize it but speak about it. for me that sends a powerful signal that you can own your identity, it's not taboo, and there's nothing essentially white about britishness. for a lot of people there's been an identity very much linked to whiteness. i think the change that that family represents is profound. >> do you think there's an inherent tension there from meghan markle because she's somebody wasritten and spoken eloquently about the subject of her own race and her own personal struggle with finding and making peace with what her identity was. there is inherent privilege in the royal family. that is the very tradition of it. she's about equality of opportunity.
1:48 pm
is that a paradox? do you predict a tension there? >> there are so many paradoxes about the royal family and i can personally relate to this because while i have felt quite alienated of the idea of inherited privilege but at the same time my own struggles with identity have made me appreciate the need for cultural continuity. while i didn't relate to the royal family, i related to the fact that people did. i can relate to the need for that sense of tradition. as the world changes more rapidly than ever, there's a sense of history that lives today. i think that everyone can relate to the need to have traditions you can embrace. i think the royal family provides that. >> you pointed out earlier on that there's no reason to downplay your identity and embrace what essentially are your in-laws now. >> speaking of in-laws, we're looking at tom parker bowles and his wife going into the chapel. we're sitting among the splendor and completely buying into it.
1:49 pm
do you think meghan markle makes it more difficult for people who have a tendency towards republicanism to be a republican because she represents something distinctly differe. >> anecdotally, many people i know have been skeptical of the royal family and cannot help themselves. in spite of all their ideology they just can't help it because they feel compelled by her and look at who she's invited. she's invited other self-made people, black icons, oprah winfrey, idris elba, serena williams. these are people who have real meaning for so many people and also she's giving a platform to other black talent. she's got the kingdom choir performing, the episcopalian bishop curry, sheku kanneh mason, the young black cellist. even people who are not a fan of the royal family feel passionately about it. >> we can talk all day about

couple of occasions. oh, you're name dropping. meghan is very lucky. >> it's all about name dropping. please keep that coming, tell us how you're celebrating the royal wedding. maybe you've met prince harry or the bride-to-be or you've got sound advice about how to calm nerves. >> do we have some pictures? have we got time? >> i don't know if we have got time for pictures. >> no, we don't. it's time to go to the very latest to meghan's hotel. >> i'm very excited to be outside because we've got an hour to go before we get the first glimpse of meghan's dress. no doubt the fashion moment of the year. the question, who will she be wearing, what will she be wearing. there have been various comings and goings to the hotel, blacked out windows but no clues.
1:56 pm
it's a fiercely guarded secret. the finishing touches to hair and makeup are taking place inside the hotel right now. we haven't seen the page boys and bridesmaids because they will be meeting meghan at st. george's chapel. these final moments must be nerve racking for any bride but the entire world will be watching when meghan departs from this hotel and makes her way to windsor castle accompanied by her mum dordoria. inside there a mother and daughter are sharing a deeply intimate moment right now, that precious and private time together before they set off shortly and face the world's media. you can only imagine what's going through meghan's mind right now and how her mum doria is feeling as she watches her daughter, her only child, get ready to marry a prince. it's the ultimate fairytale. >> thank you so much for that. we'll be coming and going, we think, from cliveden. for now let's take a look at the guests as they fitter into st. george's chapel. joelle, our fashion expert, is

here. what do you make of these pictures? >> it's not a bad life, is it? everybody looks absolutely fantastic. i love all the color that we're seeing. i thought that was -- that's alexei and his partner there. i love that mint green. it's a beautiful spring day and a wedding i think is a perfect excuse to bring the color. >> i was expecting to see a lot more sort of pastels, that kind of shell pastel pink. we've seen a lot of bold color. >> yeah. sort of like more wintery jewel tones are coming through. you've seen a lot of emerald green as you're wearing yourself, looking fantastic. that's something amazing, isn't it? >> that is a wonderful outfit. >> that is bringing the festive. i like it. >> are you spotting -- i've seen -- obviously there have been some sensational head gear. are you spotting trends in the head gear, a look that people tend to be going for? >> there's sort of like going
1:58 pm
big or really tiny. there doesn't seem to be much in between. there's not many fascinators. >> there's chelsea davey, an ex-girlfriend, we believe, of prince harry and she's looking i have to say rather thoughtful as she sits in st. george's chapel. that's a great hat. >> amazing. phillip tracy tends to sort of kidnap the royals. absolutely gorgeous. again, sort of like that wintery tone but it works because it looks so kind of festive. >> and that, madam, is a hat. >> that's the thing, i just feel like -- oh, look at this one here, the feathers sticking up there, incredible. if you're going to wear a hat, own it, go for it. how often do we get to do it. >> we were cheekily referring to beatrice and eugenie's remarkable hats in 2011.
1:59 pm
>> so far that one wins. >> that's right up there. >> i want beatrice and eugenie to push it even more, just own it. >> it can be difficult to wear a hat, can't it? >> i think so, yeah. you just look bold if you're wearing a hat. >> there's pippa. >> she's wearing a british brown, sort of paired down like the ultimate wardrobe. >> and the fold is made in britain. that's one of their selling points that they le toee. it's british desigd and british made. >> and there's- >> that's annabelle goldsmith. there we are. there's carol middleton. and michael middleton. >> she looks fantastic. we remember her baby blue from kate's wedding. >> the man that is shaking hands with carol middleton is of course patty hashson who worked at manchester united and went on as head of communications to the

boys at st. james' palace. he was seen to throw diana a ring of steel when needed to be but was very fair in his dealings with the press. >> he was instrumental about getting harry out, wasn't he? >> he was. he looks relaxed. he's moved on. he's not having to deal with the back room shenanigans. a day of celebration for him. it's a splendid day here in windsor at st. george's chapel. welcome if you're joining us here on bbc one. we will of course have the ceremony at midday. it couldn't be a better day. fortune is smiling on the bride and groom with this weather. we're going to look at some pictures. >> let's look at some messages, find out how you're celebrating. i think we've got some pictures today. >> let's look at the pictures. >> this is moses, my 7-year-old son drawing the royal couple
2:01 pm
that he did at school yesterday. nice work. >> that is pretty good. >> he's going to celebrate watching it on tv while decorating biscuits. >> getting in the mood to celebrate. i do like these masks. look at that, splendid. >> union jack bow tie. there's a different royal couple. >> look at the little fella to celebrate prince harry and meghan markle, their namesakes. lovely. the chapel zoned? >> sir clive, lady jane, welcome to windsor, what an amazing day. >> amazing. thanks, it's a real honor to be here. >> you have quite a strong relationship with prince harry. tell me where it started. it's all because of his love for rugby, isn't it? >> he absolutely loves rugby and
2:02 pm
i think we first met harry when he was 13 and i had him in the royal box in his nice suit. afterwards i saw him and he didn't look happy and i thought we've got to change this so we changed the whole routine, gave him six tickets, he brought his friends along, sat in the crowd with his rugby shirt and hat and he came to enjoy it. we started then and he's been a big fan ever since i think. >> is it true that johnny wilkinson gave him a rugby top? >> yeah, very true. i still wears it. i don't think he's ever washed it. after the game he said look what i've got. of course we used to insignia the shirts and he's never washed it ever and still wears it now. >> jane, you were known for throwing legendary parties in the car park. tell us more about these parties. >> it was a way of looking after the wives and girlfriends and mums and dads because obviously there wasn't enough kids to go around inside. that's where harry and william used to come with their friends
2:03 pm
and mingle and get stuck in and hand around the cakes and the pastries and champagne and we would all go in and watch the game. he started coming in '98 so it was fantastic support really for us. >> tell us about baking for prince harry. >> i'm a dreadful baker but every now and again i would take along some cakes for him and his friends. whether they ate them or not -- >> they were great cakes. lovely cakes. >> what cakes were they? >> sponge cake. >> sponge cakes. >> that's about all i can do. >> who doesn't love a sponge cake. how proud are you both feeling today? >> bursting, bursting. >> i'm proud because i've seen him grow up since a young boy and i think we're all hugely proud. you've seen the welcome today, a big, big day. he just looks really happy and that's all we want. he's just a great guy and
2:04 pm
delighted to be here and really happy for him. >> wonderful to see him so happy. we wish them all the best. >> absolutely we do. you both look gorgeous. have a great day. thank you for speaking to me today. >> announcer: stay tuned for more of the royal wedding on bbc america. bbc, the broadcaster and his wife. i'm just wondering at this point what the nave is looking like and that's it for you, about half full at the moment. that means about a couple of hundred people there. quite a few people still to arrive and we've seen over the past five or ten minutes or so some of those people who have been associated with prince harry in the past, some friends of the family and those indeed who have served with him in the armed forces too. looking at these images with me, their private secretary for 8 years, a role that he left in 2013. nice to have you with us. when you think about to when you knew the boys when they were young and here we are today celebrating the event like this,
2:10 pm
the transition to you must seem a very satisfying one. >> for me it's sort of a combination of what has been a great journey for prince harry actually. he was always very special. just a very good guy and he had potential really from the word go and it's great to see it all come to fruition on his great and happy day. >> what do you think of the partnership? >> it's unbelievable. it's a wonderful modern coming together actually and with harry and his way of doing things it really means that they'll be able to do great things together, actually. >> looking at more people arriving and i'm just thinking what are your thoughts on the mix of people that we have here today? what does it tell us about them? >> it reflects the eclectic nature of prince harry in that he's primarily interested in people and what you're seeing here is nothing less than the
2:11 pm
mix of what he's always been fascinated by, which is people. >> circle of friends is interesting for us to see obviously. because it's not obvious to the public very often where the circle of friends is and what kind of friends there are. describe the friends for us. how do they work out? >> i think it's actually fairly similar to anybody in that you layer up your friendships as you go through life. obviously it's a very different life to most of us which prince harry has had but it's school friends. it's army friends. the army has played a huge part in his life. he's obviously been in more than one regiment so he's got friends from the calvary, from the army air corps and then he's got his friends from his charitable work and the work as a member of the royal family. >> so the best man, as we know, is william, the brother. and there's a little dig saying revenge would be sweet or some such line in a playful way.
2:12 pm
how do you think that's going to work out? what is that partnership like? >> one of the reasons that we're very lucky in this country and i don't wish to sound sycophant here but they are both really, really good guys and they both come from completely different angles, whatever you want to call it. they're entirely complimentary to one another. they always have been. you've seen lots of things they have done together over the years. they have very close and have that very healthy sibling rivalry. they make the mickey out of each other. >> marcus and carey mulligan on their way to st. george's chapel. one of the range of celebrities and entertainers, because again, just to reflect what we were saying earlier -- there you have the chief executive of the royal foundation.
2:13 pm
there we have, jamie, possibly one of the biggest names, george and amal clooney again telling us something that this the a couple engaged in complaining, engaged in saying something. >> right back to the foundation of sentebale, harry has always had this and it amazed me actually coming across a 21-year-old boy, man, whatever, he had such a drive on that side actually. this is just a reflection of it. >> now we have the beckhams too so this is the celebrity few minutes and again a reflection of the kind of status and scope of this congregation. lovely to see them. they're all enjoying. clooneys bask is in the sunshine and admiration and applause. the beckhams clearly having a fantastic time. >> wow. the a-listers all turned up at the same time. >> that was extraordinary.
2:14 pm
george and amal clooney. you really can't underestimate the sheer star wattage. is somebody lighting them as they walk down there? because they're shining. i'm going to say that i think amal clooney is wearing amelia wicksteb. and i'm probably entirely wrong. >> if you're right that's so impressive. >> and there we go. we see david beckham taking -- it wasn't quite a selfie but somebody was having a snap and the shades are back on. victoria is wearing a very elegant deep blue that she's wearing. a hat with a veil and i imagine her seamstresses at her fashion brand have been very busy this week. i am very, very admiring of george for many reasons but one of them is he is walking nice and slowly because he knows that amal is in heels and it takes time to negotiate the ancient

cobbles of st. george's. >> we were at the top yesterday and up for a look around and where the guests dropped off, that is a significant gradient. all i could think of is my wife would not be happy now. >> but amal clooney is an accomplished human rights lawyer. i think heels on cobbles is the there we see -- there's tom bradley of itn who we've been reading recently has been having sleep problems but he looks like he's had a good sleep last night. there's johnny wilkinson and his wife with a lovely bump underneath her beautiful lace dress. and a wave to the crowd. what they have been waiting for. >> seems like half past 10 is the time to stay up for the wedding. >> that must have been a bit of a jostle there for them. do we want to be before or after george and amal? >> announcer: stay tuned for more of the royal wedding on bbc

i'm with the chief executive of the diana award. you're at meghan and harry's wedding. >> oh, my god, someone pinch me. this is amazing, so exciting. the weather is great, like this is incredible. i'm so excited. such an honor. on behalf of everyone at the diana awards, we're so honored to be here. we have ten young people with me also. what a spotlight on the charities we support, what a spotlight on bringing charities in, bringing princess diana very much into the ceremony today. it's just incredible. >> how many qualities does prince harry share with his mum? >> oh my goodness, we say princess diana is remembered for her qualities of compassion, quality and service and that's
2:21 pm
how we would describe both prince harry and prince william. this wedding demonstrates how much service and humanitarian work is important to them. bring it on. we're very excited. >> this says so much about this young couple, doesn't it, that they've said to everybody, just donate to seven charities and they've invited all of you here. going forward this is going to be fantastic. >> they're a power of good. both of them individually are very engrained in humanitarian work but together they work for good. this is massive, this is huge. one of the things i was saying yesterday is i see meghan redefining what a princess means. it's not simply about golden sandals, it's about service. it's about people. it's about caring. it's about compassion and empathy and that's what i'm really excited about. >> you said that you brought how many people from the charity? ten. >> ten, yes. >> and you are wearing a design by one of the young people you have helped. tell me about it. >> one of our young people was
2:22 pm
on my styling team but my dress is actually designed by a fabulous lady that is amazing. she did my hat and my dress. it's incredible. so thank you to everyone. one of the things i really wanted to do is allow young people to shine through this process. they're here with me. we're very much involved in thinking about the outfit and what it meant so it's been an incredible process. >> you look fantastic. have an amazing day. hooray for the weather. >> yes. >> thank you so much. >> thank you. >> all the best. >> thank you very much. >> it's a day for kisses, isn't it? and the beautiful flowers behind jesse we saw have been done by philippa craddock and her team. the whole of st. george's chapel is just a magnificent building anyway but it's come alive today with guests full of good cheer in this late spring sunshine. george and amal. it would be nice if victoria beckham smiled.
2:23 pm
we're here for hours, anything could happen. >> we know george clooney is smiling. >> beaming. >> yeah, beaming. there he is in the choir, the nave which is the greater part of the building and then the choir. there is mr. nicholas jones. that happens to be my old man. i'm sitting here working and he's doing that. there's one of my daughters. >> let's have a little talk about his pocket square. >> okay, yeah. >> did you give him that? >> yeah, i wouldn't have tucked go on, tuck it in. mate. i wish he could hear me. they're mixing with the guests. speaking to the beckhams. it's lovely to see them. >> your daughter. >> what a day for freya who is 17. she said mom how do you wear a hat? i said you have to just wear a hat and get on with it. there's george and amal clooney.
2:24 pm

this is the royal wedding of prince harry and meghan markle on bbc america. >> still a big crowd here. our guests still with me. what i'd like to do is tell you what's going on inside the castle. the reception that's happening. and what we think is going on there in terms of what's been late on. what it tells us again about the nature of today's events. >> they've got a traditional reception at st. george's hall, but there's a lot of modern touches. i understand, very recently, they start groweding their own line, sparkling wine here at windsor. the queen was serving it for the very first time at a state occasion the other day at the commonwealth summit. they may be having some of that wine. so, you know, it's just going to be home ingredients. >> the kitchen's been cooking for something like 800 years

so -- with a wbit of modernization in between. and then of course the private reception this evening, which does involve a reduced number of people, and there's been some commentary. >> 200 people. we're going to have some speeches from the queen, the prince of wales. tonight is where the party really starts. it's very underwraps. you can read all about it in the sunday times tomorrow for the scoop. >> very colorful parade going on. the marines going through. what i'd like to do is ask for their highlight of the day. to be fair, you know, we've got a choice in terms of just not the arrival of the bride and the emergence of the dress but actually there were several special moments. first you, robert. >> the highlight has got to be the music. the music and the chapel.

monarchy's all about bridging the past with the present, and it was a glorious fusion there of the very best english tradition, great organ, the gospel choir, it just brought past and present together beautifully. >> to me, it's seeing meghan incredibly composed, walking herself up the aisle. that dress by claire wait keller was fabulous. >> thank you very much for enjoying the event with us. with that, let's join them again. >> thank you, hugh. so this has been an incredible procession. meredith and joan, and i imagine -- >> well, you know, the dress, the dress, the dress. it was absolutely worth the wait. it was pure class. i think that's the word, isn't it?
