she means. this is the world's oldest inhabited castle. >> we've pretty up got everything covered at the bbc here indeed. the ceremony, the carriage procession, yes, the wedding and more. we are here on our sofa. stay with us throughout the day on yours. of course ours and everyone's full attention is going to be on the bride and groom. prince harry who is sixth in line to the throne and meghan markle, an american actor and humanitarian campaigner. so where are the couple of the moment right now? prince harry is staying where coworth park and yesterday afternoon he and his brother, prince william, the best man, did something rather fabulous. a little walk-about, much to everybody's delight and surprise, among the crowds who were out on the pavement all day yesterday in the sunshine in windsor. they didn't know they were going to get that. delighted. very good weekend, no front

teeth or not. there we go. and meghan has been staying at cliveden house. there she is. she arrived yesterday evening with her mother, doria ragland, and they both, it must be said, cut quite the dash. if that was the dress for just going into the hotel, honest to goodness. and both the mother of the bride and the bride-to-be looking, it has to be said, incredibly relaxed. meghan is close to her mother and in an interesting break from tradition doria is going to accompany her daughter today as she travels from cliveden to windsor castle. we hope to have live pictures of that coming up a little later. it was yesterday that the groom's father, the prince of wales is then going to walk the bride down the aisle. >> as you might be able to see already huge crowds gathering here at windsor. the doors to the crowds opened a couple of moments ago. it's estimated that 1.9 billion

people will be tuning in. >> and i really wish you hadn't said that. >> as we take this global conversation on youtube, so how are you celebrating. for me, charles and diana, it was all about the street party. any street partying happening today, if you made any royal wedding food, are you getting married today, are you annoyed about that? do you know another harry and meghan getting married, we want to hear from you using the #royalweddingbbc1 and we'll take a look at how your celebrations are going. >> the doors to st. george's chapel won't be opened until 9:30. that's when the 600-odd guests are allowed to find their seats. so poised, ready and waiting for that moment with really a cracking view of the castle is our colleague, hugh edwards. >> look at this, it's a pretty wonderful view. good morning, everyone.

of course this is one of the most iconic views in the world. there you have the round tower of windsor castle, the background, it dominates the landscape for miles around. it's a view familiar to many millions of people around the world. make no mistake, as you've just underlined, it is a global event with a massive global audience, focusing on windsor. we have some of the best seats in the house from our great position. we're kind of on the roof of the guard room of windsor castle and overlooking what's known as the lower ward of the castle. this is where we can see people gathering already. those people especially chosen to be inside the grounds today, lucky people. they're just starting to settle down. the picnic baskets are there, the deck chairs and the blankets too. i don't think they'll need a blanket. it's very, very warm already at just 9:00. it's going to be a very

memorable day for all of them. the couple really wanted members of the public, young and old, to be a part of these celebrations. there are more than 2.5,000 people invited inside the grounds. they will get the chance of course to see the bride and groom. all the chapel guests making their way to the chapel later. we'll be talking to some of them. on the far side of the lower ward, just take a look. just take in the scene. glorious blue sky and a glorious piece of british architecture, st. george's chapel. the doors opening, as we know now, at half past 9, and then we'll see for the first time what the florist, the very talented florists have been doing inside. timing, let's talk about timing, what's the day look like. the bride will start the journey to windsor leaving cliveden house at ten past 11. most of the wedding guests, district instructions to be in their seats by 11:15. members of the royal family

start arriving at galilee entrance at about 25 past 11. prince harry and best man duke of cambridge are arriving at the great west door, the main door of the chapel at about 20 to 12. and then the big moment, the moment we're all waiting for when the bride will arrive with the bridesmaids and page boys, ten of them and then the service can begin. in around 20 minutes or so wedding guests will start to arrive. nothing official released on the guest list but there are some pretty big names on it and we'll expect to see some familiar faces, close friends from the world of entertainment, sports and music, people from charities and organizations that the couple supports so a very broad mix of people. covering the comings and going from their prime positions just a few yards away from me, anita and dore. >> good morning. >> we feel honored to be on the

stand out. you can't remember everyone that goes through your school, debbie, but meghan made a real impact. >> absolutely. meghan was always not only charming but poised and academically advanced. giving of herself, willing to take her free periods and go to the preschool and help with younger children. always involved in community projects whether in school or outside of school with her brownie troop. very remarkable young woman. >> the school you go to when you're that young, she was there from 3 to 12, the atmosphere and culture and teachers you encounter and the head teachers have a big impact on who you become. as you watch her marry today will you feel personal pride or will you feel emotional? >> i'm very proud of all the teachers that had a part in meghan's growth and hollywood

>> yeah, exactly. pretty surprised to get an invite if i'm honest. great to be here. i think the weather is fantastic and the support and crowd already is brilliant. >> j.j., you spent a lot of time with him. how is he behind the camera? >> um, i always say this, he's brilliant on the camera and he comes across as a lovely bloke and he's even nicer in real life which is remarkable considering when you look at the sort of environment he comes from and the fanfare that surrounds him, to have a normal functioning human being. i think a big part of that comes from his service in the military. really i see him as another captain from the army. >> i did a battle of the british show with him in 2015 and he came down and we were doing a fly-pass and the two injured veterans were going to go with him in the three main planes. on the morning one of the planes just wasn't air worthy and he gave up his seat and he should have given up his seat and the fact that he did says a lot.

you spent a lot of time with him. >> that's entirely him. if i'm completely honest, i've never seen him do anything for himself. this is the first time where the occasion has been about him but at the same time he's giving it to all the people. that's the way he is. >> it's really about meghan. >> well, that's true. >> a lot of us, i'm sorry, but i'm a real rugby union girl -- >> that's okay. forgive you. >> a lot of us don't necessarily know quite so much about the prince's association with rugby league. how involved is he? >> it's still quite fresh. it's only been over the last 12 months he's become a patron. he's been involved on a couple of occasions and has bee absolutely fantastic. one was an event where he was in and around hundreds of boys and girls. he joined in, had a big smile on his face and was passionate about being there. the second occasion was with our english team, men's team. he came and met them in a private meeting and was

brilliant, very down to earth, passionate about our sport and about our country which is great. >> especially with league obviously and union, you go into those dressing rooms or whatever, you've got to know your stuff before you walk in there. >> he did. he had clearly done his research and i'm sure in the not too distant future at the international games, i know what a support he is of union but i think throughout the combination of both it's really special for him and great to have him involved with us. >> j.j., you've spent time with him in the military. has he talked to you about how important that period was for him? it's pretty obvious to see. >> it's the most wonderful thing about being with him is that ultimately we've had very similar experiences. we both served ten years in the military together. he ultimately left perhaps not even on terms that he wanted to, particularly his first tour in afghanistan. so i know that through his work with the invictus games, just

like me, it's itching a scratch. it's an opportunity to get back in the atmosphere of it and really sort of relish in the fact that he's kind of with the boys basically. >> when we hear him talk about inct, it's very interesting, thers something about it that is so utterly personal. i'm sure when he's talking to you it's personal but when he's on the public stage, there's something that he imparts. you can almost hear and feel the emotion. it's very deep inside of him. >> listen, the invictus games has changed my life in ways i could never have expected and ultimately that's all because of him. great team together, lots of people behind the scenes but he was the guy who said we're doing this in 8 months' time, 2014, and he drove it because of his passion because he lives and breathes it. >> do you think it took that person of importance driving it? >> i think it might have happened in time but it would have happened too late. the need was there and it needed to happen but also the need to get it right. it needed to be the magic that

is invictus. nobody really knew what that was. he saw it before we saw it. >> nice to talk to you. have a great time at the wedding. there's lots happening and hugh is going to tell us a bit more. over to hugh edwards. >> thank you very much. yes, just looking at my watch and we are within a few minutes of the doors of st. george's chapel opening. and i just think this is the moment we want to kind of take in the scene and to see what's been going on inside st. george's chapel over the last couple of days. we've spent a couple of days here talking to lots of those people who have been working inside the chapel. outside we're familiar with this scene now. it's a glorious scene in windsor. philippa craddock is the floor -- florist chosen about harry and meghan to decorate the chapel itself. we have the south door opening on this royal wedding day. it's the moment that lots of

people now will be given the signal to come to the chapel itself and look at the decorations. what philippa craddock and the team have done over the past couple of days is decorate the chapel with all kinds of locally sourced foliage. it really is a kind of flowing, glorious look, a kind of cascade of flowers and greenery. lots of roses, lots of blue lily of the valley, fox gloves. trees, beech and birch as well as an arch way over that south door. let me tell you, there's more to come because elsewhere in st. george's chapel you'll see that this display is truly on an epic scale. take a look at this. i can't tell you how beautiful it is and indeed the aroma when you go into the chapel itself because these roses are glorious, absolutely glorious.

a little explanation of what we're looking at here, that section of the chapel, because the chapel is split into two halves if you like. both decorated richly. one a little more than the other. this is the nave, the big open space at the west end of st. george's chapel. there you have the organ screen. you can see the case work on each side. beyond that, the much more intimate and medieval setting of the choir. this is where you have the heart of the ritual, life of the knights, the knights of the garter, this is where they hold their service. this is where they have their own seats in the choir. this is where you have the medieval display of carpentry and banners right at the heart of this chivalrous order. how powerful an impression this creates. this is the setting for today's wedding service here at windsor.

we're looking at the choir. this is where the royal family will take their seats. this is where the guests on both sides, bride and groom side, will be taking their seats a little later on. there will be some very familiar faces there on either side, not just members of the royal family but other essentially invited guests too. i'm not going to spoil the surprise at this stage. we'll see them arriving in a short while. that is the choir. back in the nave we have this glorious decoration that we were talking about. i think that's going to be one of the prime features of the day. look at that window at the far end, the west end. just take in that scene. that is one of the biggest medieval windows in the world. you have all of this floral display and kind of free-flowing look to it. it's a kind of -- i don't know. it's a blend if you like, this

medieval, gothic architecture with these displays that are there and it's been done i think with a touch of genius. philippa and the team chatting to them late last night. i asked them when they were wrapping up last night and they said actually it will be 5:02 in the morning. that's the result. by the way, when you see the west door a little later on where the bride will arrive, that is, if anything, even more impressive. there you have the west door there just tucked underneath the great medieval west window. so all of that to come but just a taste for you of the beauty and the glory of st. george's chapel in windsor, the scene of today's wedding service. >> thanks, hugh. thanks very much. once intimate and grand but at the same time it's quite a building. i was speaking to a lovely couple of ladies on thursday, sarah and vanessa. they were talking about -- it's called the choir where the royal family will be sitting. i said it looks so splendid.

and i fell into her life. >> their paths crossed in 2016 when a mutual friend suggested a blind date. meghan had only one concern. >> i had one question. i said, is he nice? because if he one kind it didn't seem like it would make sense so we went and had a -- met for a drink. >> i was beautifully surprised when i walked into that room and saw her and there she was sitting there. i was like, okay, i'm really going to have to up my game. >> i think very quickly into that we said, well what are we doing tomorrow? we should meet again. >> we should meet again and it was like, we need to get the diaries out and figure out how to make this work because i was off to africa and she was working and we said where's the gap. the gap happened to be the perfect place. i managed to persuade her to visit me in botswana and we camped out. she joined me for five days out there which was fantastic and then we were really by ourselves

which was crucial to me to make sure that we had a chance to get to know each other. >> the family has been great and we had a really nice time getting to know them and progressively helping me feel a part of not just the institution but also part of the family. >> harry and meghan chose the invictus games in toronto for their first official appearance together, and just two months later at harry's cottage in kensington palace, he popped the question. >> it with was so sweet and natural and very romantic. he got on one knee. >> the ring is yellow gold and little diamonds on the side are from my mother's jewelry collection. to make sure she's with us on this crazy journey together. >> it's beautiful. and he designed it. it's incredible. >> both of us have passions for wanting to make change, change for good. >> it was one of the first things we started talking about when we met, just the different things that we wanted to do in

it's got a 21st century spin on it. i'm very excited to be a part of it. >> we opened the show with it and i said, come on, i can't start the show with that. it's going to get me there. >> here's the thing, it's the first time you were happy with your performance? >> i am. >> you should be. >> there's probably no subject that's written more about than love. when you were commissioned to write that, where do you begin? >> so i have to remove myself from it. i had to think about what it meant first of all to the two individuals getting together and secondly to the world because it is an event of international significance so i suppose love obviously is at the core of it had and you just got to be a bit respectful and understanding of what's happening. >> is that the kind of thing, did you take advice from anyone or do you just go, you know what, i'm going to go away -- i

mean, how long does it take you? are you the kind of guy that would -- would that take you half-an-hour or months? >> that's the good question. the majority of the work for me is the thinking. it's a question of my personal experience and my understanding and then just trying to create something that -- >> people think you're crazy. >> i'm talking to myself. been doing it since i was 15. >> there's also a very interesting aspect which is the we go to poetry at intimate times in our lives, very intimate times in our lives. a lot of people may not be today but might read a poem at a wedding or funeral service. poetry means different things to different people but it's always there when we're trying to sum up important emotions. poetry gets to the sentiment of our experience. i just released my podcast and the poetry that's covered in that is so different from what

is happening here but at the same time its about that universal human experience. it's a beautiful thing. >> we'll give you that plug incidentally. that was a big plug. everybody at homgo. >> he can plug what he likes. >> poetry is giving voice to the feelings that people have in their head but haven't always been able to articulate. >> that's it. that's that universal thing that we all know. the language of it. >> you spent time with harry. >> yeah. >> what was it like and how did you find him? >> going back into 2015 was amazing. i have recently been made ambassador of harry's charity with prince seeiso of length owosso and it's all about providing social support for young people with hiv. >> we were looking at them. what do you make of all of this? it's jaw dropping, isn't it? >> it is. but it's investment. it's an investment of a people

in their identity. this is symbolic to so many people around the world. it's beautiful. >> don't you find, today in particular, to a degree in 2011 as well, but there seems a modernity to this as well, so much moving in the royal family in whatever way you want to describe it. >> definitely what harry and meghan represent and the things that are important to them and what they've demonstrated about their cakes throughout their public lives. so just off the back of that alone it definitely is stepping into the future. >> do you think it's -- >> some words to that. >> do you think it's important for the royal family and for britain that we are welcoming in a biracial member of the royal family right into the heart of the establishment? is that important to you? >> i think it is a big symbolic step. obviously we all know that we're all equal either way but what it

when meghan and prince harry spoke recently about their hopes for the future, the one thing they seem certain about, aside from their love from each other, was their desire to make a difference in the world, a deep rooted commitment to charity work in both their lives interestingly long before they were a couple. >> prince harry and meghan are now in partnership with the duke and duchess of cambridge and the fab four of patrons of the royal foundation. to tell us more about their work, the chief executive, david wiesman, who oversees the foundation and colin, all invited to the wedding and someone definitely has their hat. >> thank you. >> fabulous. lorraine, you head up the royal foundation as we've just been hearing. the fab four they've been christened in the press. they're not wrong, are they?

four young people out into the world. what are you making of the fact that meghan is joining the team? >> it's wonderful that she's joining and wonderful that prince harry is marrying someone who is as committed to philanthropic work as he is. i think she will make a big difference. the whole point of the royal foundation is that we try and make an impact on difficult social problems, try and move the dial, change mind-sets, and you saw that with the heads together mental health work and the campaign that we had last year and the ongoing mental health work that we're doing now. >> she's obviously just coming into the family but from what you've seen of her so far, the press conference i saw, i think the energy was the thing that struck me the most. is that how you find her? >> fantastic energy and like the others, a real people person. so able to -- when we go on private visits, to sit down and talk to anybody and everybody on their level and really start to get under their skin about what is it that they're concerned about, how is it that we can

make a difference and help to improve their lives. >> david, i think one of the things that people often wonder, they think, well yeah, these young royals are there for the camera and that's great and it brings publicity. what are they actually doing behind the scenes? so let me ask you, harry, what is he doing behind the scenes? >> i've been heading up the armed forces program since 2014 and i've worked with them on many, many different programs, specifically with prince harry on the endeavor fund, the invictus games and most recently with his work to do with the military and the mental health of the armed forces community. i can tell you it's not there for the cameras. the amount of hours they put in behind the scenes, in the meetings, driving the decisions, prince harry in particular, he's got a real visionary brain. he can see where he wants the project to go and he drives it forward. >> colin, tell us about where prince harry fits in. >> prince harry has been with us for ten years so we are a

national charity specifically for children so our main cause really is to get children out of hospital, make sure they can be cared for at home and have everything they need to be cared for at home. we've grown a lot in that ten-year period and he's been behind a lot of that and pushed us forward in doing that. >> is there an instance where he met a child or a kid at one of your places and you would know this better than i but didn't the child tell him that he was waiting for the prince to turn up? >> you're never sure how children are going to react anyway as i'm sure you know. prince harry comes to the well child awards every year so he's met hundreds of families and children, some of them are here in the castle. very famous indent where prince harry had a whole conversation with someone who was 8 years old and he spent the whole time looking over his shoulder waiting for the prince in his gown and crown to arrive and

didn't realize until afterwards that that was actually prince harry. >> that's great. >> one of the interesting things is that they are very, very approachable. members of the public do feel that they can talk to them. when i was on the train coming back with prince harry and meghan from nottingham, suddenly obviously the word got around so everybody who was working on the train was coming to either collect rubbish or whatever. they were all chatting to them and giving them congratulations, commenting on meghan's amazing teeth and telling prince harry how well he had done for himself. >> he does have that great smile. >> you can see yesterday. >> we wish you a wonderful day. have a great time. what a day it's going to be and what a day it is here in windsor. welcome, if you're just joining us on the bbc. we can look at st. george's chapel as the guests arrive. they have got the golden ticket. 600-odd people today fittering in that chapel for what will be

still is. our focus is still on covering a problem or stigma through education, getting young people involved, having set up sentebale, realizing or appreciating that we need to empower the young people to take the lead in some of these inventions. >> what's the biggest progress you've made? >> on the side of adherence of hiv patients. of the stigma, because of the mystique around the negative aspect of hiv and taking the drugs, these young people were either fallen by the wayside afraid to take their drugs. but through the camps which deals with children with hiv, we have seen a significant growth in terms of numbers that kids are now taking the drugs and now are their advocates for a more positive and productive society

and communities. >> what does that work tell us -- because you know him well. what does it tell us about harry's character? today is a day of great celebration and starts a new chapter in his life today. what can you tell us a little more about the way that he clearly wants to be of service to other people and wants to use the incredible position and influence that he has for the good of others? >> from the day he landed in lesotho, we drove all across the country and at the end of that 8 weeks, initial 8 weeks, he said is this it? he said, no, no, we cannot stop at this. i've seen and i think there's a lot that we can do together. there's a lot that can be done for the children to a point where now the sentebale model having achieved some great things in lesotho, there are still some challenges but we're now expanding the model.

it's hiv ravaged and other vulnerable groups. the best practice that he has been in the driving seat to drive, the passion to drive us into action, because he started this from -- we started this from zero but he's always had the vision, the passion. and that passion shows in the response that he gets from the young people when he comes into lesotho. they all love him. in fact, when i'm here, i'm not just here on my own behalf. i'm on behalf of the children of lesotho. >> lovely thing to say. >> very warm message from lesotho to harry and meghan that when the dust has settled, they should come and we're going to have a jolly good feast. >> the invitation has been delivered. >> yes. >> i know that you have, well, let's just say, a pretty good

from every corner of the world. if you're joining us now, we're just within, well, a couple of hours of the service starting, and this is the glorious scene inside st. george's chapel, windsor, with the congregation just getting into place. here we have all the banners, so colorful, so rich. they really do respect centuries of british history. this is the most prestigious display of heraldry anywhere in the world. there you have the seats where the knights of the garter take their places for the garter ceremony. every april there's a garter service here at windsor. we're also expecting of course in those choir seats to see the choir, that is to say the singers of st. george's chapel. they are one of the best choirs in the world. they will be performing today. they've been in existence since 1838. it's a wonderful tradition. we're looking forward to that. this is the scene inside this

wonderful chapel. are earl spencer chatting to some guests before the ceremony gets under way. they've got a bit of a wait but safely in their places because lots of people were asked to be firmly in their seats by 11 or 11:10 at the very latest. we've seen a few people already taking their places but lots still to come. numbers,s look at some of the guests her as we look at the main body of the choir itself, some 600 people in this congregation, most of them in the nave, this space that we're seeing in front of us here. these are not individually named seats by the way. they're seated in kind of zones in the nave. the named seats are in the choir. 600 people representing friends and family in many cases, but of course as prince seeiso was telling us now, those charities and organizations that the couple feel very strongly about where they want their support, where they will be signaling their support in the future. there we have the lower ward of

windsor castle, people gathering in the sunshine of may for this lovely day, this very happy day, and it couldn't be better weather, it really couldn't be. james haspel among those arriving here. i think they are in for a feast. may refer in a little more detail later on to the kind of service we can be looking forward to. i can tell you one thing right now without giving away too many secrets, the music in today's service is absolutely sublime. a very broad range of music but it is a real treat. so let's look forward to that as well. >> thank you, hugh. we've seen the guests file in now through the south door to george's chapel. we saw the first actual members of the royal family, oprah winfrey. >> it is interesting, isn't it. we were watching earl spencer talking to oprah winfrey and we

i'm with matt ives from rhino conservation all the way from botswana to attend the wedding in windsor. welcome. >> thank you very much. it's a great privilege. >> prince harry is a payton of your charity. what does that mean? >> well, a few years ago i got talking to harry about the conservation of rhinos and my organization, rhino conservation botswana, and to my surprise he got really interested and then i discovered that he was a conservationist, enjoyed conservation, understood what it meant to the people of the world to have conservation and so we got talking about rhino conservation and rhino conservation in our country. >> he's quite hands on, isn't he? >> we've done a number of operations together, hands on with the rhinos. we also work with people. he's particularly interested in the links between people and wildlife and in our case rhinos,

yes. >> he's described botswana as his second home and we know that a couple of weeks, three or four weeks into his relationship with meghan they slept under the stars in botswana. what is it about botswana that makes it such a beautiful place? >> well, i don't know, very friendly people, wide open spaces, absolutely magnificent country side, and the leadership that is very pragmatic, very concerned about wildlife. it's just a wonderful, wonderful place on earth. >> how do you think prince harry will be feeling right now? >> i don't know. i can't comment really on that but i imagine, like anybody on his wedding day, he'll be a touch nervous. but he's a confident individual. i imagine he'll get through it okay. >> and you're a very smart man. am i right in asking you when i say is this the first time you've worn a suit? >> i think you would be right.

i think that meghan markle is certainly someone who represents the latter. she has become successful through her own talent and hard work. she's used her celebrity to champion causes that she's passionate about and also as a woman of mixed heritage, she hasn't shied away from speaking about that. she's owned it. for me as a black woman of mixed heritage myself, there's been a lot of pressure in my lifetime that you're entering spaces that previously have been wide to downplay your identity. she represents a willingness to not minimize it but speak about it. for me that sends a powerful signal that you can own your identity, it's not taboo, and there's nothing essentially white about britishness. for a lot of people there's been an identity very much linked to whiteness. i think the change that that family represents is profound.

>> do you think there's an inherent tension there from meghan markle because she's somebody who has written and spoken eloquently about the subject of her own race and her own personal struggle with finding and making peace with what her identity was. there is inherent privilege in the royal family. that is the very tradition of it. she's about equality of opportunity. is that a paradox? do you predict a tension there? >> there are so many paradoxes about the royal family and i can personally relate to this because while i have felt quite alienated of the idea of inherited privilege but at the same time my own struggles with identity have made me appreciate the need for cultural continuity. while i didn't relate to the royal family, i related to the fact that people did. i can relate to the need for that sense of tradition. as the world changes more rapidly than ever, there's a sense of history that lives today. i think that everyone can relate to the need to have traditions you can embrace. i think the royal family

provides that. >> you pointed out earlier on that there's no reason to downplay your identity and embrace what essentially are your in-laws now. >> speaking of in-laws, we're looking at tom parker bowles and his wife going into the chapel. we're sitting among the splendor and completely buying into it. do you think meghan markle makes it more difficult for people who have a tendency towards republicanism to be a republican because she represents something distinctly different. >> anecdotally, many people i know have been skeptical of the royal family and cannot help themselves. in spite of all their ideology they just can't help it because they feel compelled by her and look at who she's invited. she's invited other self-made people, black icons, oprah winfrey, idris elba, serena williams. these are people who have real meaning for so many people and also she's giving a platform to

tell me where it started. it's all because of his love for rugby, isn't it? >> he absolutely loves rugby and i think we first met harry when he was 13 and i had him in the royal box in his nice suit. afterwards i saw him and he didn't look happy and i thought we've got to change this so we changed the whole routine, gave him six tickets, he brought his friends along, sat in the crowd with his rugby shirt and hat and he came to enjoy it. we started then and he's been a big fan ever since i think. >> is it true that johnny wilkinson gave him a rugby top? >> yeah, very true. i still wears it. i don't think he's ever washed it. after the game he said look what i've got. of course we used to insignia the shirts and he's never washed it ever and still wears it now. >> jane, you were known for throwing legendary parties in the car park. tell us more about these parties. >> it was a way of looking after the wives and girlfriends and mums and dads because obviously

there wasn't enough kids to go around inside. that's where harry and william used to come with their friends and mingle and get stuck in and hand around the cakes and the pastries and champagne and we would all go in and watch the game. he started coming in '98 so it was fantastic support really for us. >> tell us about baking for prince harry. >> i'm a dreadful baker but every now and again i would take along some cakes for him and his friends. whether they ate them or not -- >> they were great cakes. lovely cakes. >> what cakes were they? >> sponge cake. >> sponge cakes. >> that's about all i can do. >> who doesn't love a sponge cake. how proud are you both feeling today? >> bursting, bursting. >> i'm proud because i've seen him grow up since a young boy and i think we're all hugely proud. you've seen the welcome today, a big, big day. he just looks really happy and that's all we want.

guests still arriving and we've seen the chapel filling up pretty quickly. earl spencer chatting to some of the guests there in the choir. we have at least 200 or 300 people in the chapel now. dna snow, my colleague from the bbc, the broadcaster and his wife. i'm just wondering at this point what the nave is looking like and that's it for you, about half full at the moment. that means about a couple of hundred people there. quite a few people still to

arrive and we've seen over the past five or ten minutes or so some of those people who have been associated with prince harry in the past, some friends of the family and those indeed who have served with him in the armed forces too. looking at these images with me, their private secretary for 8 years, a role that he left in 2013. nice to have you with us. when you think about to when you knew the boys when they were young and here we are today celebrating the event like this, the transition to you must seem a very satisfying one. >> for me it's sort of a combination of what has been a great journey for prince harry actually. he was always very special.

just a very good guy and he had potential really from the word go and it's great to see it all come to fruition on his great and happy day. >> what do you think of the partnership? >> it's unbelievable. it's a wonderful modern coming together actually and with harry and his way of doing things it really means that they'll be able to do great things together, actually. >> looking at more people arriving and i'm just thinking what are your thoughts on the mix of people that we have here today? what does it tell us about them? >> it reflects the eclectic nature of prince harry in that he's primarily interested in people and what you're seeing here is nothing less than the mix of what he's always been fascinated by, which is people. >> circle of friends is interesting for us to see obviously. because it's not obvious to the public very often where the

circle of friends is and what kind of friends there are. describe the friends for us. how do they work out? >> i think it's actually fairly similar to anybody in that you layer up your friendships as you go through life. obviously it's a very different life to most of us which prince harry has had but it's school friends. it's army friends. the army has played a huge part in his life. he's obviously been in more than one regiment so he's got friends from the calvary, from the army air corps and then he's got his friends from his charitable work and the work as a member of the royal family. >> so the best man, as we know, is william, the brother. and there's a little dig saying revenge would be sweet or some such line in a playful way. how do you think that's going to work out? what is that partnership like? >> one of the reasons that we're very lucky in this country and i don't wish to sound sycophant

here but they are both really, really good guys and they both come from completely different angles, whatever you want to call it. they're entirely complimentary to one another. they always have been. you've seen lots of things they have done together over the years. they have very close and have that very healthy sibling rivalry. they make the mickey out of each other. >> marcus and carey mulligan on their way to st. george's chapel. one of the range of celebrities just to reflect what we were saying earlier -- there you have the chief executive of the royal foundation. there we have, jamie, possibly one of the biggest names, george and amal clooney again telling us something that this the a couple engaged in complaining, engaged in saying something.

>> right back to the foundation of sentebale, harry has always had this and it amazed me actually coming across a 21-year-old boy, man, whatever, he had such a drive on that side actually. this is just a reflection of it. >> now we have the beckhams too so this is the celebrity few minutes and again a reflection of the kind of status and scope of this congregation. lovely to see them. they're all enjoying. clooneys bask is in the sunshine and admiration and applause. the beckhams clearly having a fantastic time. >> wow. the a-listers all turned up at the same time. >> that was extraordinary. george and amal clooney. you really can't underestimate the sheer star wattage. is somebody lighting them as they walk down there? because they're shining. i'm going to say that i think

>> they were so lovely. i was almost like meeting an old friend. they're personable people, very lovely. on top of that, again, meghan knew everything about us without us even having to say which is amazing that she came up with facts like we train 400 people every single year. she knew that without us having to say it. for her to do that it shows that she really cares about young people and the work that we do which is so important. >> that's interesting to hear. you meet a lot of people and we do too. you can so easily tell the difference between somebody professional and somebody who seems to be engaged. you felt they knew what you were about and they were genuinely interested. >> absolutely. the first time i spoke to prince harry, he kind of popped his ear ready to listen to what we had to say. he was inquisitive because initially he thought it was a radio station and then they said all we do is having to do with mental health. if you look at the charity work

they've both done, he saw that and the reason he picked much more than a radio station. >> when we see joss stone, usually joss stone has her hair flowing, bare feet and wearing something like a cool caftan. not today. joss stone has made quite a considerable effort. she's looking beautiful. we know she's a friend of harry's. she's played at gigs that he's enjoyed and here she is today heading to her friend's nuptials. >> what impact do you think it made for the people of brixton for meghan and harry to visit? >> it shows they really care about what we do and what we do on a day-to-day basis. as a radio station we get like 2,000 unsigned artists and it's just really important for them. >> what's happened since the visit? >> it's been crazy. >> has it?

>> yeah, it has. i think the day after i went there people are like, oh, my god, you met harry, you met meghan. it was crazy but on top of that it was really good because it shone a big light on the work that we do outside of radio as well. >> i don't know if it's important to you or not but i'm interested, is it important that the royal family is welcoming somebody who is biracial? >> the way i see it from spending time around the young people that we represent, for our generation, things like equality, inclusivity and love in all its forms, for us that's the norm. that's how it should be. but actually, with the stuff that's happened in the last couple of years, there's a massive question mark over whether is it the norm anymore. we had brexit and political decisions in the u.s. i feel like this wedding today is a massive thumbs up from the top that actually we're going exactly the way we need to be going. as you were, signed the royal family. that's what it feels like. >> such an interesting answer. thank you so much. >> thank you. >> we are back with hugh i

believe. >> here we are in our garden room with our fantastic view. we've seen lots of guests arriving. with me is someone with a very precise eye on these things, royal correspondent for "hello" magazine, emily nash. >> thank you for having me. >> we talk about fashions. what do you make of the event in terms of who's here? tell us about your reading of that? >> we've had a flurry of a-listers. it's a meeting of royalty and hollywood royalty. we're seeing lots of big names, the clooneys, the beckhams. we're going to see a few more i suspect. what i love about this wedding is you've also got other people, more unsung heroes if you like, friends of the bride and groom who have brilliant stories to tell as well. among them people like dean stotts who has smashed a record for cycling the length of two continents, got back here in time for the wedding. >> looking at the congregation,

it's pretty packed there. it's really getting quite full. most of the main guests have arrived. when we see a little later on meghan arriving and we see the ten bridesmaids and page boys, tell us a little bit about the selection in that group and what you make of that. >> they have chosen children who are very close to them. obviously you have prince george and princess charlotte, the niece and nephew of the couple. they have the children of their three best friends. we'll see the children of jessica mulroney and some of the god children as well and the mothers in there as well to wrangle them into position. >> at the service, are you expecting the content of the shape of the service to tell us something about their tastes and the fact that are they going to try to make a statement with that in terms of how modern it is in parts of it? what's your reckoning? >> i think it's going to be

relatively relaxed by the standards of royal weddings. you're still going to have the formality, the national anthem, i'm sure a curtsy to the queen but you've got the gospel choir. what's not to love. it's going to be great fun. >> i'm thinking at this point when we go through the service, as you say music is fantastic, and we look at the kind of range of people here, then i'm thinking do you know what, this is not a bad place to be in the lower ward itself. it's lovely to be in the chapel but chatting to people down here earlier on -- by the way, lots of the people in this lower ward are part of a community of windsor castle. i should explain this. there's quite a big community of people who live within the castle itself. >> that's right. >> they are among the most excited of all. >> they're hosting the party, you know. there's a real festival feeling. it's a lot of fun out there, people enjoying the spectacle.

>> a few minutes to midday when the bride arrives just before the service starts, what are your thoughts on what we might see in terms of a wedding dress? clearly the speculation is pretty intense. >> whatever i say now i might be setting myself up for a big fall. >> give me a range of options. >> big names, stella mccartney would be a great choice. she's got all the credentials, simple, beautiful, elegant styles. we're hearing other names, perhaps less expected, clare waight keller is also in the mix. she has led some very big fashion houses here. i think we're not going to know until that door opens. it's going to be a huge moment. >> prince seeiso who was in the studio with us earlier, we see his wife as well making his way into the choir. he has a pretty prominent place in the choir where the royal family is sitting. he's sitting on the same side as some of the other guests in the

they got engaged which was the first time that we all got to really clap our eyes on them properly and official as a couple. there we are. that was the day they came out into the garden at kensington palace. she was wearing a distinctive white coat. >> that brand is renamed the meghan coat in honor of the meghan effect which is so real that it's actually quite terrifying for a lot of brands when they can't actually keep up with the demand. that was the case in point where they ended up with a six-month waiting list for that coat. meghan of course is one step ahead of us. she owns it in an assortment of colors. you can get it but i think there's a waiting list. it's about 450 pounds so a reasonable entry point for a coat if you want a bit of the markle sparkle. >> we tested this last night as well, the championing of brands with meghan is a huge thing. it's going to make a whole business. >> yes. and i really admire meghan's

was good to have that. >> what did she talk to you about? >> she didn't say that much. she was really pleased to be there and understood about what happened around steven and just saying how sorry she was to hear about the news and really pleased to be there at the time. >> we talked a little bit about this earlier on and the royal family always has causes and it looks like meghan is bring is those causes on. there's always a big thing that the royal family can't get involved in politics but there is a point where cause and politics kind of -- the diagram overlaps a little bit there. >> i remember when their relationship was first announced there was a lot of language in the press that i thought was very coded racist references and i don't remember but prince harry issued a statement from the palace where he calls that out and condemns it and it was completely unprecedented and i think that it is difficult for them to put themselves out there on issues like this but when it effects them personally or they

feel strongly enough about it they do. it was a hugely welcome moment because people like me that write about it are often attacked themselves and to have somebody in that position be on your side makes a huge difference and i hope they'll continue to venture into spaces that have been a bit too difficult because that's what we need in the country. we need to start talking about things that we prefer to sweep under the carpet and i think meghan has a track record of doing that. harry nohas entered that realm as well and that offers a lot of promise and actually if the royal family wants to make themselves more relevant to the new generation that's the kind of thing they do need to do. >> we should let viewers know -- they probably know, we've seen sarah, the duchess of york enter st. george's chapel.

>> i want to ask you about when we see the royals and the soon to be royals turn up at events, what happens is automatically usually more attention than an event would get because of their presence. for what does that mean in your role as you consider your work? >> steven's name has always attracted a lot of media attention but to have both meghan and harry turn up it was fantastic. it shows that they're more in tune to what's happening within society and the fact that they wanted to be there to support him. we had prince william to to steven's trust before with kate and that's amazing, because they spent time talking to young people and you couldn't pry them away because they're so keen to make sure that they spoke to everyone that was there on the day. >> announcer: stay tuned for more of prince harry and meghan markle's royal wedding on bbc america.

have you spoken to the young

people about this wedding? do you think -- are they engaged in it? >> i haven't had a chance to be around the wedding but i've been speaking to them. it's so important to have to get young people's views. we had one young student attend the service and he's one of the law students so it was quite good to have young people. the idea was about voices, young people's voices. so that's what the theme was. to see them there on the day, of course we invite all our students to whatever we're doing to make sure they're represented at all times. >> hopefully in the future we can move on from this being a question, but is it important or how important do you think it is that we are seeing the first biracial member of the royal family? >> i was saying this morning that they've had a black queen before. this is back in 1750 something so it's not the first time. i think we need to move away from always talking about people's color. we need to talk about who the

the team last year. >> absolutely, yes. >> what effect did the games have on you personally? >> for me personally, when i was retired from the army, i still felt like i wanted to perform what i was when i was serving. having the opportunity to be captain, to be given an opportunity to step up, to stand up and be the person i was and it brought about that person. >> it's interesting because british service men and women i guess have in common with most service men and women around the world, they're people with stamp ma, ambition. if that's taken away that's a huge part of your personality you can't express. >> sit down and watch tv. the opportunity to step out of that and something that prince harry did to move into invictus makes a massive difference.

>> there is a sense that you obviously get institutionalized because you were in there such a long time. there's a sense that like i said from the people i've spoken to that there's a distance or a certain sense of loss. is the invictus to a point filled that in your life? >> it made me the person i was. when that was took away, it is taken away, when you get together again, that camaraderie, you feel a part of it. you prove you can do it as well as you did it while in service. >> can i ask you, you were both in toronto when meghan and harry. everybody knew it was something much more than that. it was a statement that we are together and this is very, very serious. what did you make of it? you thought firsthand, the response between them?

>> it's quite place for them to go public because clearly, the games are really special to prince harry. the it's very much part of his life. i think recently. so the very fact that's what they became public was great because it was everybody could see it firsthand. this just added more sparkle, really. >> going to be on the phone when the wedding's over. >> an accident. it's happening. everything was in full splendor. >> they're having a delayed honeymoon. on their way there to the games, they might take time. >> that's a right place to do it. >> yeah. >> we are approaching 45 minutes away. when that service will begin. just a couple of minutes before midday.

meghan markle will arrive at the great west door of st. george's chapel and then process alone along the aisle and she will cross the part of the chapel and cross by george clooney approaching the altar, where prince harry will be waiting for her. then the archbishop will conduct the actual marriage ceremony and the dean of windsor, who is in charge of this magnificent place, he will be in charge of the overall service. now some orchestral music. some very english flavor.

performer i mean that in the best sense, she knows how to communicate a message. >> it's interesting because she is so modern and very independent and speaks her mind. so it will be interesting to see once she is married if she will continue to be able to do that because she has so much to say and she has stood up for so many important causes including gender equality which is very important to her. she spoke about that eloquently at the un for years now and i hope that her voice can be heard and i think with harry by her side it will be. i don't know to what extent but he also wants to give folks a voice and they are humanitarians and care about people and together they're a powerful team. they call them the fab 4 for a reason.

>> that puts windsor on the map. >> not all of britain looks like this. this is a very cliche view of britain. the union jack and so forth but it puts windsor on the map. >> absolutely. we're really not familiar with it. people still thought the wedding was in london, including myself. oh i have to get on the train and go 20 something miles to get here but then when you're here it's like a fairy tale. >> we're seeing beatrice. >> you live and you learn. >> i was being told earlier that it's an up and coming designer, quite knew on the scene already and do you know what, i think they're gorgeous. >> yes. >> really, really understated and beautiful.

>> there we see the royals. it's the place that she has been on many occasions before. it's another day out really isn't it? >> looking through the order of service. >> i like her ruby red. >> how do you think she epitomizes the modern american woman? >> she never wanted to be one of the ladies that lunch. she wanted to be one of the women who work and that's very much the modern american woman. a doer. someone that stands tall and proud of herself. very independent, works hard which she has done her whole life and she has principles from the time she was 11 and saw this commercial that offended her because she found it sexist and her dad actually said then write a letter and she wrote to among other people, hillary clinton. who was then a first lady and it's a few months later that ad was gone. >> time after time you go back, she's american, she actually had

what are we reading into that? what is our partnership telling us today? >> today we have the most modern royal wedding we have ever had, really. each royal wedding brings with it new developments. new trends in fashion but i think today, it's a sort of extraordinary atmosphere. it's sort of the stars and stripes a long side the union jack. you have hollywood. you have a 1,000 year old castle with 1,000-year-old monarchy as well. it's a fabulous blend of ancient and modern. >> the most modern? >> it is the most modern royal wedding we have ever seen and certainly the most modern worldwide. she's walking herself up the aisle.

in a week of twists and turns. yes i think as robert said, this match shows that the monarchy has moved. it has moved and modernized and people will be celebrating that today. >> we had a little glimpse inside the car. >> very demure dress. boat neck style. a big tiara. it's hard to see. a veil. doria is looking beautiful in a hat. we think that's burberry but meghan looks magnificent. >> a quick word. one of the big elements of news of today, the big news of today was of course the title for the couple. just a quick word about the title. >> duke of sussex is a royal duke that became extinct in the 1830s. so it faded from view. it was widely expected but duke of sussex. but i think most people will remember him as prince harry of wales. >> we'll be back in just a moment because they're really

of windsor and the fact, of course, that this chapel has many, many sanctuaries of royal tradition attached to it. interesting too that today prince harry has opted to wear the uniform of the blues and royals reflecting his army heritage. he does have more senior ranks and more senior uniforms but that tells you something about where he felt most comfortable today. the official office of the prince of wales which we heard performing there in the 20 minutes or so before the brothers arrived. >> so they make their way along the aisle. up toward the choir. they'll be followed a little later of course just before midday by the bride herself who will be joined halfway down the chapel just by the prince of wales that will accompany her for the last section of the procession. during that procession there will be a performance of

wonderful music and the trumpeter. here we are. the scene outside on the fringes of windsor. and this is is just at the end of the long walk approaching windsor castle itself. where there will be a grand procession by the way after the service. so this is going to be a very familiar sight today. we have there the conductor christopher warren green with his players entertaining the congregation. a quick check on the time and i think that hotel, christopher, they are pretty much on time today and just first of all the sight of the two brothers making their way in. >> very wonderful to see them in their blues and royals uniform. a lot of people thought he might wear his world marine military uniform but they just look so,

prince harry and the best man of course, the duke of cambridge. just exchanging a few words of reassurance and advice. they look around slightly nervously but we completely understand that. but you do get a very strong sense here again within such close proximity howell they understand each other and howell they get on. there's a clear one. >> it's lovely to watch there. harry looks nervous and william is clearly joking. just at the end before catherine arrived william looks a little bit nervous and harry was playing the joker and it's lovely to see that role today. >> so they arrive and then they have the choice of sitting in there for quite awhile but wisely they went into another

little room just to calm down a little bit and gather their thoughts before they enter. so they now have a wait of around 10 minutes before the bride arrives. bride having arrived at the top end of the castle with her mother and final adjustments will be made there before they arrive and within a minute or so of midday. that will be a great fanfare by the state trumpeters. we saw them early on. they will be there and at that moment, harry will know that meghan has arrived at the west door. that is the signal to the world that the service will get underway and the procession will begin and once again, i like to share with viewers how important that moment will be and to take it all in. that will look very dramatic and very different and then of

course to be joined by the prince of wales to go into the choir itself. we will not have seen anything like it. and dare i say, in most. >> you're absolutely right. it's unpresented for a royal bride to walk herself down an aisle. in fact, actually, serena williams who is sitting in the choir. >> just on the left hand side. >> she did walk herself down the aisle when her father pulled out at the last minute. it's going to look different. it's going to look dramatic, but she was an actress. i'm sure she will be drawing on her poise and experience to make it up to the organ screen where the prince of wales will accompany her. >> if people are expecting the arch bishop of canterbury and dean of windsor, this is going to be a departure because they're going to have the head of the episcopal church in america.

married in a civil ceremony. and there's her majesty the queen and the duke of edinburgh. her majesty at the age of 92, clearly enjoying the day and the duke of edinburgh who had his share of ill health, delighted to see that at the age of 96, 97 next month, he's able to come and see the wedding today. that's going to be a great source of joy for the couple and the entire country. i have just been told that the queen is wearing a dress by stewart parvin. it's a purple and grey printed silk coat and dress. the hat is by angela kelly. but it will make quite a statement too.

and there we have the mother of the bride waiting in the choir and just a thought from what doria is thinking at this moment. >> she must be feeling exceptionally proud of her daughter, completely overwhelmed, i'm sure. the queen made her welcome as have the rest of the members of the royal family but she is feeling unbelievably proud that her daughter, an american is about to marry into the royal family and become the duchess of sussex. i'm sure that's something she never thought would happen. >> harry looks nervous. >> he has a bridesmaid and page. family honor at stake here. they both have things to worry about. >> she is the only member of meghan markle's family attending. so she is representing her daughter today. >> we want to see the

bridesmaids and the page boy. that's what we want and we're about to be treated. making their way down to the lower wards and this is our vantage point. slowly making their way past all the crowds there. some of the 2,000 people invited into the lower ward today. lots of these by the way are either members of the royal household or people part of the windsor castle community but as i was saying earlier, thousands of them have been selected. ♪

if you don't believe me, think about a time when you first fell in love. the whole world seemed to center around you and your beloved. well there's power. power in love. not just in its romantic form but any form, any shape of love. there's a certain sense in which when you are loved and you know it, when someone cares for you and you know it, when you love and you show it, it actually feels right. there's something right about it. and there's a reason for it. the reason has to do with the source. you were made by a power of love. and our lives were meant and are meant to be lived in that love.

that's why we are here. ultimately the source of love is god himself. the source of all of our lives. there's an old medieval poem that says where true love is found god himself is there. the new testament says it this way, beloved, let us love one another because love is of god and those who love are born of god and know god. those who do not love, do not know god. why? for god is love. there's power in love. there's power in love to help and heal when nothing else can. there's power in love to lift up and liberate when nothing else will. there's power in love to show us the way to live.

set me as a seal on your heart. a seal on your arm. for love it is strong as death. but love is not only about a young couple. and the power of love is demonstrated by the fact that we're all here. two young people fell in love and we all showed up. but it's not just for and about a young couple who we rejoice with. it's more than that. jesus of nazareth, on one occasion was asked by a lawyer to sum up the essence of the teachings of moses and he went back and reached back into the hebrew scriptures and jesus said you should love the lord your god with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind and all

your strength. this is the first and great commandment and the second is like it, love your neighbor as yourself. and then in matthews version he added, he said, on these two, love of god and love of neighbor hangs all the laws, all the prophets, everything that moses wrote, everything in the holy prophet, everything that god has been trying to tell the world, love god. love your neighbors. and more than anything, love yourself. someone once said that jesus began most revolutionary movement in all of human history, a movement grounded in the unconditional love of god for the world and a movement mandating people to live that love and in so doing, to change not only their lives but the very life of the world itself. i'm talking about power. real power.

power to change the world. if you don't believe me, well, there's a place in america's antebellum south that explained the dynamic power of love and why it has the power to transform. they sang a spiritual even in the midst of their captivity. it's a healing balm, something that can make things. to make the wounded whole. there is a balm in gilead to

heal the soul. stanza says if you cannot preach like peter and you cannot pray like paul, you just tell the love of jesus, how he died to save us all. his way of love is the way of life. he died to save us all. he didn't die for anything he could get out of it. jesus did not get an honorary doctorate for dying. he wasn't getting anything out of it. he gave up his life. he sacrificed his life for the good of others. for good of the other. for the wellbeing of the world for us. that's what love is. love is not selfish. love can be sacrificial. and in so doing, it counts redemptive. unselfish, sacrificial redemptive love changes lives.

and it can change this world. if you don't believe me, just stop and think or imagine. think and imagine. think and imagine a world where love is the way. imagine our homes and families when love is the way. imagine neighborhoods and communities where love is the way. imagine government and nations where love is the way. imagine business and commerce when love is the way. imagine this tired old world when love is the way. when love is the way. unselfish, sacrificial,

redemptive. when love is the way. then no child will go to bed hungry in this world ever again. when love is the way we will make justice roll down like a mighty stream and righteousness like an ever flowing brook. when love is the way, poverty will become history. when love is the way, the earth will be a sanction ware. when love is the way we will lay town our sword and shields down by the riverside to study war. no more. when love is the way there's plenty good room for all of god's children. and when love is the way, we actually treat each other well,

like we are actually family. when love is the way. we know the source and we are brothers and sisters. children of god. brothers and sisters a new heaven, a new earth, a new world, a new human family. and let me tell you something, solomon was right in the old testament that fire -- with this, i'll sit down. we got to get you all married. a french jesuit was arguably one of the great mind, great spirits

of the 20th century, a jesuit, roman catholic priests, a scientist, a scholar, a mystic. some of his writings said and others have that the discovery of invention or harnessing of fire was one of the great scientific and technological discoveries in all of human history. fire to a great extent made human civilization possible. fire made it possible to cook food and to provide sanitary ways of eating which reduced the spread of disease and fire made it possible to heat warm environments and there made human migration around the world a possibility, even in the colder climate. fire made it possible. there was no bronze age without

fire, no iron age without fire, no industrial revolution without fire. they're greatly dependent on the human ability and capacity to take fire and use it for human good. anybody get here in a car today? an automobile? nod your heads if you did. i know there were some carriages. but those of us that came in cars, fire is a controlled harness. fire made that possible. i know that the bible says and i believe it that jesus walked on the water but i have to tell you i didn't walk across the atlantic ocean to get here. controlled fire in that plane brought me here. fire makes it possible for us to text and tweet and e-mail and instagram and facebook and socially be dysfunctional with each other. fire makes all of that possible and greatest discovery in all of human history.

he then went onto say if humanity ever harnesses the energy of fire again, if humanity ever captures the energy of love, it would be the second time in history that we have discovered fire. dr. king was right. we must discover love. the redemptive power of love. and when we do that, we will make of this old world a new world. my brother, my sister, god love you, god bless you, and may god hold us all in those almighty

the royal party there. there's little princess charlotte but also take a look around charlotte. what a day this is. her mother the duchess of cambridge is saying. just a few short weeks since she gave birth but there she is looking splendid and doria ragland. seemed to be having a few quite thoughts to herself but now there she is with her extended family, the prince of wales having a few words with her there. it could not be a more beautiful day here at windsor. >> so the carriage is ready. harry makes his way in and helps his new wife into this that they have chosen for this carriage procession. a lovely open carriage perfect for this day. giving everyone a very good look at the young couple as they make their way through the streets of

that really rather wonderful pomp and pageantry we'll see with the mounted escort of the household cavalry. this is going to be shortly the first time members of the public outside the castle walls, they're definitely more than 100,000 estimated who would come out to see them, get a chance to see the new duke and duchess of sussex for the first time. what a lovely sight that shall be, and the roaring we'll hear as they come around the streets of windsor will be quite amazing. >> they'll just go into the eastern end of the castle where they'll disappear for a few moments. then i expect her majesty, the queen, and the duke of edinborough to be leaving. >> the more people leaving the chapel herself, including the mother of the brooid.

and that's been for her a pretty intense and emotional moment. >> extraordinary. she looked remarkably composed the entire way through. emotional, understandably, as she saw her daughter arrive. >> very soon the queen will be leaving st. george's chapel and the national anthem will be played to signal the queen's departure. ♪ ♪

>> the queen and duke of edinborough making their way to the east end of the castle. that's where her majesty's private apartments are. that's where she spends so much of her time. that's where we get the sense she loves windsor probably more than anywhere else. who can disagree with that, given the fact it is a place that has 1,000 years of royal history attached to it. but here we are, the wonderful carriage procession under way. and the young couple preparing to greet the crowds on the streets of windsors. >> we're just seeing on the top of the round tower to the right, the largest of all the very large royal standards. the biggest one has come out today. it's really magnificent. it's almost a hazard to air traffic, it's so big.

>> such wonderful scenes. these are, of course, the horses from the royal mews pulling the carriage. shortly they'll be joined by the mounted escort of the household cavalry. it will be so lovely to see the interaction between harry and meghan there. they'll be seeing the crowds for the first time that have gathered to see them. >> the windsor gray rses, especially selected for the processionday. the ones on their best behavior and also the ones that look really magnificent. everything has been prepared in great detail for this procession. the last probably, the best part of a half an hour, but every inch of this procession has been planned. and you'll see something, you know, not just the color, not just the style, not just the pageantry, but it's going to be an impressive show for the world to see. it is a symbol, if you like, of military presession but also the kind of, i suppose, the ceremonial flare that the british bring to these things. >> they do. we see occasions like this

sometimes when the queen welcomes world leaders here for state visits. there's a comparable show as the procession will come up to the castle. we'll see is unlike anything. it's going to be the longest, i think, procession through the streets of windsor we've seen in a very long time. >> and you mentioned the extraordinary training and precision that goes into this. these horses have actually special training to cope and prepare them for the crowds they'll see and hear. they have -- they are, i'm told, ear muffs and earplugs in their ears to help them cope with the noise of the crowds. what's lovely on for this mounted escort is to see the groom in his household cavalry blue uniform. that will be especially nice. >> passing victoria monument down castle hill, turning left up to raptures of fans welcoming

them here. household cavalry coming down. and a new duke and duchess of sussex. >> it really is quite a sight, indeed. and there is a wonderful fusion here of significant british pageantry matched with the rather charming small-scale streets of windsor, which are just sparkling today with these beautiful union flag barneys. indeed, you may see at some point in the procession route, there's 1,000 meters of bunting made by the tiny, busy hands of the school children of windsor and many other kids from around berkshire. we're seeing a lovely uniting of some rather hand-made casual moments and some very proper british moments. estimates today around about 120,000 people with a mass in

in show jumping in front of the quoo queen. >> interesting that victoria barracks on the left seem quite modern but there's barracks there since, i think, the 18th century. at least the end. 18th century. of course, much enlarged now. the regiments have saved at victoria in turn. yes, they take their turn there. >> they change the guard at windsor castle. now the whole procession coming into king's road. i walked down there yesterday. everyone's been working very hard on their gardens, very hard on their bunting. you'll see a lot of stars and stripes as well, which is a nice touch. and canadian maple leafs. canadians are keen to claim the pride. >> commonwealth is a big theme not only in the bride's wedding dress and veil, she had every single flower of the commonwealth, every 53 flowers

of t commonwealth embroidered onto it. >> maybe which is why it was so long. it was a nice touch. the queen's coronation gown had all the commonwealth. then it only had eight, now there's 53. >> 200 members of the armed forces serving today in various ceremonial roles. lots with links to prince harry. the irish guards, very prominent today because 1st battalion irish guards have been on duty and, indeed, we have wonderful musicians of the irish guard's band performing for us at windsor castle. they've been hard at work all day as well. lots of individual members and then different serving groups and regiments involved. all of them selected for their links. >> all services involved.

>> people have made a huge effort, a huge effort to decorate their homes. lots of them, indeed. we were just here two or three days ago and people were preparing at that point when, you know, frankly, the town was not so busy. but they were determined to have a great day. time and again, people were talking about the weather. and, you know, there's always a bit of a gamble in may. this has been a gamble that's paid offhand somely. now what we see on the procession is just completing the rotation around the center of town before, eventually we'll get to the most spectacular part of all, which is the long walk through windsor great park. we saw the car earlier speeding through. this will be a very different experience. of course, with the household cavalry in attendance providing the escort, it's going to be one of the most memorable images of the day without any question. >> absolutely. it's going to be an utterly

spectacular sight. i think the couple will be extremely relieved. windsor could not look more stunning. this is exactly the picture of winds windsor, of great britain we want to see at the moment. >> the queen's garden, you couldn't have picked another time than may for a wedding. all the castles are at its best. when the weather is like this, it's going to be the most fabulous global picture of britain. as we can already see, people on one side of the road. in a moment they're going to charge across into the other to the park so they can get a second look at the couple coming back. we were expecting big crowds but these have exceeded all expectations. there's no room on that pavement for any more people. >> thames valley police working hard as well in windsor. let's give them the credit they're due. i would like at this point just to acknowledge those members of the armed forces who are street

lining because that's a pretty arduous duty on a day like today when the temperatures are so high. royal navy and small ships diving. prince harry appointed chief of ships and diving a couple of years ago. harry was appointed captain general of the marines in december of last year, taking over from the duke of edinborough, who had held that title, by the way, for 64 years. so, that's very much rich family heritage. the army air corps is taking part, the rifles. we saw two gurka officers opening the doors for some of the cars arriving. 1st battalion irish gauards, i mentioned them, and r.a.f. h honington. just to underline, you know, they're all here for a reason. yes, it's not by accidents. they're all here because they

>> well, the kitchens he have been cooking something like 800 years. you know, with a bit of modernization in between. so, just in terms of what's happening at lunchtime and then the private reception this evening which does involve a reduced number of people. that's also been the source -- >> 200 who made it onto the elite list. we'll have speech from the queen and probably the prince of wales. tonight the reception starts at frogmore house. that's under wraps. you can read about it in "the "sun-times"" tomorrow. >> the royal marines are making their way through the center of windsor. what i'd like to do quickly is ask for that highlight of the day because, to be fair, you know, wea've got a choice in terms of not just the arrival of the bride and the emergence of the dress, but actually there were several special moments. first you, robert, what's the highlight? >> i think the highlight has to

when the bride down the aisle, we heard the fantastic voice of the soprano. we do know each other pretty well. we're old friends. it was fantastic. how was it for you? >> very exciting. i got the c in the mdle of march saying they would like to walk into "a light divine," i screamed a bit but i thought, what a perfect thing to sing to. i sung it at one other wedding but this was such a special event all around. it's been a beautiful day. >> lovely atmosphere. >> yes. >> which you helped to set, to be fair to you. >> thank you. >> and i'm just wondering, what is the challenge of performing on this kind of stage? you're no stranger to performing but on this kind of stage, does it make a difference? >> the biggest stress was how fast she was going to walk because, of course, it's all down to it's her moment. you don't want to too fast. you don't want to arrive with three minutes to spare, you don't want her to miss getting there. there was so much planning. the rehearsal was a tightly

woven embroidery. it's been really well set up. the most important thing is it felt like a family and friends wedding. standing up in those moment looking out, nothing but smiles. very relaxed faces. i saw prince harry at the start. he said, good luck. i said, more good luck to you. everyone was happy to be there. >> you can tell us who you were most thrilled to meet today. >> i met george clooney. >> that's very honest of you.
