that's expected over the christmas period. good morning and welcome to bbc news. in the last half hour, we have had unconfirmed reports that anis amri, the man believed to be the suspect in the berlin christmas market truck attack, has been killed in a shoot—out in the northern italian city of milan. lacko we have been told the german federal prosecutor is in touch with his counterparts. italy's interior minister is to hold a press conference within the hour. meanwhile, police in germany and australia have foiled two terrorist plots overnight.

the authorities in australia say they've prevented an attack in the city of melbourne that targeted prominent landmarks, possibly planned for christmas day. five people have been detained after a series of raids in which explosives were discovered. in west germany: two men have been arrested on suspicion of planning an attack on a shopping centre in 0berhausen near the dutch border. the italian interior minister is holding a press conference in rome. we will bring you thatjust as soon as we can do, we expect the italian interior minister to give us more details. there are details that the tunisian man, the main suspect in the berlin christian market attack anis amri was shot dead in police in milan after being asked for id papers early in the morning outside a train station. we will be going

straight back to that a news conference as soon as we see the interior ministry representative speaking. for now, our correspondent is in berlin. a lot of information coming out, including that the german authorities had been in touch with their italian counterparts. and as we were saying, anis amri could have been anywhere in europe. there we re have been anywhere in europe. there were sightings supposedly in denmark. but now it appears he went to italy. yes, we are getting a lot of media reports out of italy suggesting that he was killed in the shoot out on the edge of milan this morning. apparently in some sort of routine check, he was asked apparently, according to media reports, to show his ide. there was a shoot out. one police officer was reportedly injured. the italian news

agency is reporting that the fingerprints of the person shot in milan to match the fingerprints of anis amri. but as i say, we're waiting for the official confirmation from the italian interior minister so that will bring more light on this incident this morning. i should explain that the pictures we can see, they are of the aftermath of the incident in milan. and we are told there was a shoot out between the berlin market suspect anis amri and police. that area was outside a train station in the milan district. i suppose there is one drama potentially about to be concluded in germany, but that is

sources have been saying, that anis amri, the tunisian suspect in the berlin market attack, has been shot bya berlin market attack, has been shot by a police officer in milan. let's go back to our correspondent in berlin. what is so striking in that he appears to have been found by chance during a normal police check. the interior minister was saying that it happened at 3am. it was a regular police patrol, they did a check on somebody that looked suspicious and the interior minister was describing how when the man was asked for his id he immediately took his gun. there was an exchange of fire and the italian police officer was injured. in the exchange of fire, anis amri was shot dead. the interior minister was full of praise for the way the police officer had

handled the case. he said it was a young police officer, he is now recovering in hospital. there is no doubt, he said, that the suspect is anis amri. we understand that fingerprints match up. now they are in contact, they have left the german federal prosecutor office know the latest of what happened in italy. we have no sense that the italian authorities had been in touch with the german authorities prior to this happening? no, all indications were that this was a random police patrol on a suspicious looking person at 3am in the morning. 0ne looking person at 3am in the morning. one of the interesting things that came out of that press briefing just now was that the minister said that he could not give too many details because there were operations ongoing. he said, you

will understand why we can't say too much at the moment. a sense that things are... i don't know whether it was to do with prosecutions, but certainly the police in italy, in germany, they are still continuing to work extremely hard to figure out exactly what happened, how this man may have got to milan. i am sure we will hear more in the coming hours as to how this took place. indeed. we will leave it there for the moment. we will hear much more from you over the course of the morning. let me bring in angus crawford, here with me in the studio. many things we do not know about what happened. we do know, from what we know about anis amri, that he spent time in italy, he was in prison in italy, interesting that he went back there? a really interesting aspect, out of the conference there are two key issues. one, how did he, in what was the biggest manhunt in recent german

history, how did this man, whose picture was all across the newspapers, all across the media, how did he manage to get to milan in the first place? that is extraordinary. we know that he visited a local mosque in berlin, at about 4am the morning after the attack. cctv footage came out that. soon after that, german authorities became clear this was a man that they needed to talk to. he somehow managed to travel all the way to milan. as we have heard, this was not a coordinated operation to arrest or apprehend him. this was a chance meeting a patrol of ordinary police officers in the street. they got very lucky. so we need to know how he got there. not necessarily a surprise he ended up in italy. as you pointed out, he went to italy in 2011, he knows the country well. he was imprisoned in italy for about four years before being released last year and going to germany. that isa last year and going to germany. that is a key issue. how did he get there? as bethany said, the other

question that we have to ask, raised by that conference, is why they will not talk about the operation more fully. what is the issue for that? are there other people involved in this investigation? is there a wider network that possibly supported him and helped him get to where he was, as we found out in nice, after the truck attack, there were multiple arrests after the attack because it appeared that the attack in that situation had supporters. these are two key questions for the authorities. how did he get to milan and what are the other ongoing investigations? the ongoing investigations? the ongoing investigations are part of the conversation that the italian authorities are having with the german authorities? german authorities did not figure much in the statement by the italian minister? not at all. from what we are seeing, i think this is a crucial moment, a very important moment. the interior minister talked about his great pride in what had happened. he praised the police and he said it shows europe that we have

effective mechanisms to identify and neutralise these people. but they have to admit that they got lucky. this was a routine check on an individual that they said looked suspicious. they did not know it was him. yes, this conversation has to continue and will continue. it seems to me that this is where the avenue has to go. it is towards seeing what support network, if any, was behind this man. we will be coming back to you very shortly. we can nowjoin an italian reporter. thank you for joining us this morning. were you at the press conference given by the interior minister? yes, good morning, wejust finished interior minister? yes, good morning, we just finished listening to minister marco minniti, very new in charge. he was telling the story of what happened last night, not far

from the central quarter in milan. as you said, it was a moment of chance, a routine patrol on the outskirts area of the city. immediately, the minister confirmed that the man was stopped for a routine patrol, he used his gun and opened fire against the police, the two police guys that were checking, ona two police guys that were checking, on a normal night shift. yes, he said that there was capacity to respond quickly to the fire and neutralise and killed the suspect, the terrorist. so, we had some information about how he came to milan, as we learned in the past, this person already knew the italian

tracks, let's say, because he was coming from northern africa, to the south of italy, making his way north. he was probably moving in an environment that he knew very well. the information we have now is that he came by train, he came by train to turin, and then to milan. what was he doing on the outskirts of milan? this is the big question today, i mean now. he was trying to hide ina today, i mean now. he was trying to hide in a specific area? of course, we are talking about big cities. usually big cities offer contacts and the possibility to hide. are you suggesting that anis amri might have been heading to meet some people? well, that wouldn't be... i mean,

ina sense, he was not involved in the attack. in a sense, it kept the police one step behind, maybe 2a hours behind. it left this man free to travel through whichever means we think he did, we believe he took a train from germany into italy. first goes to turin, a big industrial city, quite easy to hide. if you think about when we began to see his picture on the front pages of the newspapers, in the media, that was only yesterday or the day before. you can imagine that until that picture was widely out there, people did not know exactly what he looked like. you can imagine, with the fact he got a you can imagine, with the fact he gota train you can imagine, with the fact he got a train to the extreme, we believe, he moved on to a city of 4 million people, milan, a big city. we don't know exactly how well he knew the city, but we know that he knew the city, but we know that he knew italy. he had been there in 2011. he served a long prison sentence and then moved out of italy. what we are seeing here is a jigsaw puzzle of information coming together. who knows what he was

doing in milan? this possibly speaks to what the interior minister was saying about investigation is continuing, they can't talk too much about where they go now. it could be that he was looking for other members of a network, he could be looking for informal support, it could be he was trying to cross the country to get out of the country. in the hours that come, we need to know these two really important questions. how did he manage to get to italy and who was he trying to meet, or was he trying to leave the country? two key questions we need answering. we might get some more information. i should tell you that there is a press conference that is imminent in berlin, a government press co nfe re nce imminent in berlin, a government press conference in which they are likely to respond to the information that we have heard from rome, to talk about the manhunt for anis amri. then there is the news from rome that he was killed in a police shoot out in milan. briefly, there is the intriguing information given by the italian minister about the

operation that is ongoing, that they are cooperating with the german federal prosecution office. i suppose that refers to what you are saying, was he part of a network? that has to dee the wider question. after the nice attack, using a truck, the time, people are talking about a lone wolf, but as the investigation widened, there were multiple arrests. some people had possibly given him somewhere to stay, but they were not aware of the nature of what he was going to do. it is always possible and likely that this man had supporters and wa nted that this man had supporters and wanted to help them, they might not have known what he was planning, but it is vital, in the run—up to christmas and beyond, that they apprehend anybody that may have known what he was going to do what might have been involved in potential, and we don't know this, it is just speculation, then they have been potential for further attacks in europe. clearly, that has

to be the primary line of investigation. arrest anybody who may have supported him, arrest anybody who may have been involved in any future action with him. in the meantime, there have been separate arrests to the west of the country, so clearly the whole country, so clearly the whole country of germany is on tenterhooks. on very high alert. it is interesting, what the interior ministry was talking about. he was clear this was the most wanted man in europe and the italian authority succeeded, as he said, in identifying and neutralising him. 0ne identifying and neutralising him. one has to say they also seem to have a measure of luck. this was a routine patrol that stop this man because he looked suspicious. as far as they can tell, they did not stop him because they knew who he was. it shows that routine patrols can be successful. good morning to our viewers

results, but the interim results would not go to me, but they will go to my colleagues from the federal criminal office and i ask you for your understanding. i also cannot confirm the death of anis amri. that is the task of the italian authorities and that is something they seem to have done already. and the information they need to come from the italian authorities, as far as i am concerned, i have to ask, i have to thank the italian authorities for the very close and useful and confidential flow of information. also with the german foreign representations, in rome, as well as milan. ican representations, in rome, as well as milan. i can also confirm that the federal government is in close contact with the italian authorities, but we do not as yet have official confirmation. and the

federal prosecutor has not confirmed the news either. are we talking about the same officer who has been liaising with the italian authorities? is it the same contact officer? yes. in many german foreign representations, also in rome, we have a contract officer and these office rs have a contract officer and these officers normally officers of the criminal office who served in a foreign representation on stewart —— office or embassy to coordinate the liaison, the look —— the coordination. when i was talking about our

consulate general in milan, that this consulate had a contract with the italian authorities, namely, with the incumbent police president of the milan region, that is something i can confirm. a contract officer, was he sent, given the current events, or is that standard procedure, is he always there? i am not sure whether such an officer would be in place all the time but as regards italy and germany, we would have a standing representative, so we would have a police officer, a liaison officer and also a customs liaison officer always on—site in italy, so that

person, those persons, were not especially and particularly delegated to italy. can you perhaps confirm or tell as to why the certificate of suspended the deportation was found so late? the same applies here. it seems that you have information as to when that certificate and those documents were found. i don't have that information. but the same applies here. this is part of an ongoing investigation, an investigation that is not undertaken by the interior ministry, but by the federal criminal office and by the prosecution office. it has been reported that the

federal interior minister confirmed that the documentation was found 12 hours after the attack. and this seems to contradict certain messages. the two additional questions that you pose do not really change the outline of what we are talking about soi outline of what we are talking about so i have no further comment to make. which information, which type of

information did the german authorities send to their european cou nterpa rts authorities send to their european counterparts in order to make an identification of the suspect beyond any reasonable doubt? in this concrete case as to how the german authorities were informed, well, i have already talked about that. the other question was as to how the suspect was identified, that of course is a question to ask the italian authorities. but normally, this would happen through fingerprinting. that would ascertain a result beyond any reasonable doubt. the appealfor a the appeal for a manhunt the appealfor a manhunt is, that was sent out by the general federal prosecution 0ffice, was sent out by the general federal prosecution office, you have to ask them. inaudible

translation: perhaps i will start with your last question, i cannot confirm this, because details on the personal data pertaining to mr amri, most likely the offender, all of these cannot be conclusively clarified at this point in time. i cannot give you any concrete information on personal details. as

to the number of possible threats to public order, we are talking about just under 550 people in germany, who might be a public threat in germany, i don't have the figures in front of me but i will look them up ina front of me but i will look them up in a moment and i will tell you all how many people of those are already in detention. well, it is my responsibility, really. the detention, prior to deportation is a matter of the federal interior ministry. 0nce again, iask federal interior ministry. 0nce again, i ask you for your understanding. the question that you

asked pertains very much to this particular event here. the question as to whether the suspect could have been taken into detention, that is a question i cannot possibly answer at this point in time, without intervening and obstructing the ongoing investigation. also, the question as to what the suspect was alleged to have committed, i can tell you that the 550 public threats, approximately half of them are in germany. 80 of them are in detention. also, we have a circle of more than 330 people who we call releva nt more than 330 people who we call relevant people. i am not going to reiterate that, but those are people where the information is not quite as concrete, but we need to have them on the radar.

iam very i am very happy to read out to you with the provisions on detention prior to deportation. such detention needs to happen on the decision made bya needs to happen on the decision made by a judge. i am quoting from the civil procedure code. of course, the person needs to be qualifying for such a deportation. the deportation needs to happen speedily. the period of leave us to have expired. the deportee needs to be able to quote an address in the home country, where he needs to be repatriated. all of these are alternatives. all of them are reasons where there is a

risk that the detainee might be escaping. these are, effectively, the provisions pertaining to detention prior to deportation. 0ne one question pertains to the exchange with the italian authorities. prior to the events, any possible indications that mr amri was planning something? it is a question that has already been posed. the second question relates to what we have heard, namely that mramri was to what we have heard, namely that mr amri was taken off the radar, the surveillance operation was no longer conducted after september this year.

but apparently, mr amri was a topic ina but apparently, mr amri was a topic in a meeting held by the interior ministry committee? translation: once again, i might be boring you, but it is effectively a question formulated slightly differently, but this pertains to ongoing investigations. i cannot give you any details of that. inaudible translation: the first question that

was very striking, the german speaking about more security checks at border points, exactly what you would expect. we know that anis amri took quite a circuitous route to get took quite a circuitous route to get to italy and out of germany? this is the fascinating thing, we knew that he was in berlin at 4am on tuesday morning. we have now been told he somehow travelled 1200 kilometres, across germany, into france, and we are now told he probably took another training to italy to turin. from there, he took another train to milan. in milan, he walked out of the central station at 1am, he walked across to a busy main square, and he was challenged, by chance, by two police officers on routine patrol. they thought he looked suspicious. when they challenged

him, we are told he pulled out a pistol and shot one of the officers, while shouting god is great. it appears the other officer returned fire and killed him. we know that he had this extraordinaryjourney across europe that took something like four days, which ended with the shooting in milan this morning, 3am. clearly, there is a serious question to be asked now about how he managed to be asked now about how he managed to travel, we don't know exactly how he travelled, all the way to milan through france, a journey of something like 11100 kilometres across europe. something else that came out this morning is that the italian authorities say they are still investigating, there are other issues they need to investigate before they can talk fully about them. what does that mean? does that mean that he had a support network in germany? does that mean he had a support network in milan that they are still investigating? really significant issues that we need a nswe rs significant issues that we need

across northern parts of the uk at the moment. this is being brought in by storm barbara. we have been forecasting a storm all week. it is making its presence felt across scotland, northern ireland and the north—west of england right now. there are a lot of isobars. this is the pressure chart. when you get them squashed together, you get severe wind. there is a warning from the met office, an amber warning, because they will be severe. gusts of 80, possibly 90 mph. they are capable of causing some problems. we are more used to it in as part of the world, but it is a nasty day. many of us come across western parts, particularly coastal areas, will get gale force wind. the rain will get gale force wind. the rain will sweep through. a really ugly first half of the day. this band of rain will be pushing towards the east and the south—east a little bit

later on today, with increasing wind. all of us will get at least some rain and some strong wind. inland is nowhere near as nasty as it will be across scotland. a scottish storm, for most of us it is just a glancing blow. pretty chilly, clear skies in the south. this is christmas eve. a lot of isobars again. a lot of them squished together. that means strong gales blowing out of the atlantic ocean. there will be cold air here as well. that means of the showers in the north will be wintry. to the south, the weather is not bad at all. sunshine for birmingham, norwich and london. for the north—west, the cloud will be increasing again, in advance of another storm. it will bring gales, particularly towards northern areas. the other story about this weather system, you can just about see it behind me, it is pushing a lot of mild air in our direction. it is going to be a very mild christmas day itself. very
