said this was so good i thought it was going to be a disappointment, but it wasn't. this is his second musical, he made another one before and then he made whiplash. from the beginning, the screen opens up into this glorious cinemascope and it is an explosion of colour and there is this fabulous dance sequence which reminds you of fame. then the story occupies a space between, on the one hand, then the style jar of woody allen, and the free—form felicity of gravity. there is a sequence where we go flying with the cameras. the performances were brilliant. emma store dominates that. she has to

play at acting to be an actor and she does it brilliantly. —— emma stone. it was well choreographed and i love the lyrics. they are now fred and ginger but they are not meant to be. they had the magic but they also have the feet underground and it has the texture of real life. i thought it was charming. it is not afraid to be melancholy or poignant, it is not afraid to do things. it is not tied up afraid to do things. it is not tied up neatly. its strengths are in is sad up neatly. its strengths are in is sa d strea ks up neatly. its strengths are in is sad streaks that makes the joyousness even more.” sad streaks that makes the joyousness even more. i thought the opening five minutes were worth the price of admission alone. it appears to be one shot. it is also... casablanca for our times. that is

right. it is a movie that is good enough that nods to casablanca. i really liked it. live by night. ben affleck stars in this adaption from a novel. he does not want to be a gangster. however, he found themselves travelling to florida when he becomes what he did not want to be. he goes up against the ku klux klan. the interesting thing about the film is that has extraordinary pedigree. i think one of the reasons it has got sniffy reviews is when you have that kind of talent, people expect something more than a film that is ok. this is a film that invokes the godfather,

but it is not that film. it is handsome but it is artificial. it looks good and i was not bored, i found the story interesting enough, but it does have a sense that being handsome is more important than any depth. there is stuff to like better no point did i think this was a classic. when you look at the pedigree involved in it, it ought to be better than it is. our goal, which ben affleck also directed, is one of the best films. it is a good piece of direction, really good. this brings us nicely to manchester by this brings us nicely to manchester by the sea, a third film by the writer. he also made margaret, a film that spent five years in the editing room because he could not finish it and there were lawsuits and bolts. is he a genius and amanda cannot finish a film? as his third

film, this is the one that made me think you might be a genius. we're not going to be here much longer. we're not moving to boston. i do not wa nt we're not moving to boston. i do not want to talk about that. what is in boston? there are plenty of toilets all over town. all my friends are here and i'm on the hockey and basketball team. i work on a boat to this week. i had two girlfriends and i'm in band. why do you care very live? here is called to his hometown, manchester by the sea, where he has to revisit the ghost from the past. the interesting thing about the film as it is a distilled into time frames, the present when his go back to the past and the

past. the smart thing about it is that so much of the story is told through the way in which casey affleck called himself. then he is com pletely affleck called himself. then he is completely with jordan in affleck called himself. then he is completely withjordan in boston, the way he holds his body, the way he purses his lips, this is in contrast to the flashback scenes. we know that these two threads are going to move together and we are going to move together and we are going to move together and we are going to see his old life and his new life and somehow we're going to find out how that isolation happened. when it does finally come, it is fairly devastating. one thing i should say is that one of the key sequences the use of an individual ing sequences the use of an individual in g minor, but that is used everywhere. simon mayo uses that her confessions of radio 2. it is weird

that in a film that was all to do with delicate nuances to have such an obvious music choice. but otherwise casey affleck is terrific and director demonstrates he's a very good film—maker. and director demonstrates he's a very good film-maker. to have lala land and manchester by the sea, the grittier side of america and the other. it is an indie favourite from a director who is finally showing us that he is worthy of the praise. the best of your week is the monster cause. it is about a young boy who is traumatised by his mother's ill—health and he starts to see images of the tree monster that says it will tell him stories if they give him his truth. it uses fantasy to address down to our problems than it does so in a way that is beautiful and heartbreaking. i have

had so many reports from people saying that they knew they were going to cry that they did not realise how much they would cry. it is very touching and beautifully filmed. juliet was brilliant. i think it is his best and i think it is superb, based on a set of short stories. there is an older and younger central characters, women is exchanged from her daughter. it is a passionate youthful human story that is told in a way that is cinematic. the director has never been backwards and coming forward gives you lush visuals, but the performances are brilliant and the writing is terrific. it is heartbreaking but beautiful. looking back at the movies this week, that isa back at the movies this week, that is a good set of films. you will
