hello, i'm john watson, and this is sport today, live from the bbc sport centre. coming up on this programme: liberty media's takeover of formula 1 is complete, ending bernie ecclestone‘s reign at the top of the sport. tunisia book their place in the knock out stages of afcon, but algeria are heading home. and nicola adams throws the towel in on her olympic career, and turns pro. hello and welcome along to sport today, on bbc world news. play is under way on quarter—finals day at the australian open, with venus williams in action, as she and roger federer hope to prove that age is just a number, with the veterans both in action, in one of two quarter—finals in the men's and women's draw being played on tuesday. venus is up first, in her match with russia's anastasia pavlyuchenkova, hoping to reach a 20th grand slam semi—final at the age of 36. venus took the early advantage,

taking the first set. 4—1; in the second. the 35—year—old roger federer is in action against mischa zverev, who beat the world number one, andy murray, later. bernie ecclestone‘s face is one familiar to us all. but, after a four—decade reign as the ruler of formula 1, the sport is now in the hands of new owners, the american company liberty media, and chairman chase carey. their $8 billion takeover of the sport is complete, ending ecclestone‘s long association at the top of f1. carey had already been installed as the sport's chairman, but now takes over ecclestone‘s role as chief executive as well. the 86—year—old ecclestone has been handed the role of honorary chairman, and will be available as a source to the new board, but will no longer be involved in the day—to—day running of the sport, for the first time since the 19705. this is what ecclestone had to say following the takeover. the bbc‘s formula 1 reporter

andrew benson gave us his reaction to the takeover, and the part ecclestone has played in growing the sport. he has been central in building formula one up over the last few decades into one of the biggest sports in the entire world, it is second, third in terms of global audience, i should say, to the football world cup in the olympics. and he has done that through a combination of tv rights and doing deals with governments, the likes of vladimir putin, and so on, and it is ha rd to overstate,

vladimir putin, and so on, and it is hard to overstate, actually, the impact that he has had on growing formula one into that position. the value of the sport is eight billion dollars and if you look at the changes they have made today, they have employed some very serious people. first of all it is important to say although bernie ecclestone has been removed as chief executive officer and doesn't have any actual power any more, he has been kept on as what they are calling the chairman emeritus, as a kind of adviser. that is a wise move given the expertise he has, and also a lawyer. —— a lawyer he worked very close with has also been kept on. the big headline is the boss of the mercedes team a few years ago, and before that the technical director of ferrari, where michael schumacher was so of ferrari, where michael schumacher was so successful, winning the championship is he has been given a new role overseeing the motor sports side of the liberty business, and an executive who was a big deal in america with the espn network is taking on the commercial role. so some very serious players underneath chase carey, who himself, the

chairman, has been a long—term talent of rupert murdoch. senegal and tunisia have both qualified for the quarter—finals of the africa cup of nations. the former, already guaranteed their place in the last eight, drew with algeria, which means one of the pre—tournament favourites are out without even winning a match. piers edwards reports from libreville, in gabon. here in libreville, tunisia raced into the africa cup of nations quarterfinals with a victory over zimbabwe. it looked to be a complex affair. senegal had already won it at any one of tunisia, zimbabwe or algeria could have gone through. the task, though, was easiest for tunisia, the only one of the challenge is to have actually won again. if they beat the zimbabweans in this stadium behind me they would book a place in the quarterfinals against burkina faso on saturday. and they swiftly did that, racing into a first half lead at half time,

they led by three goals. in the day's began, senegal, who had looked that place against cameroon, they rested ten players for the match against algeria. 2—2 it ended in france will, mane scoring twice for the algerians. not long ago algeria we re the algerians. not long ago algeria were the highest team ranked africa and they arrived at these finals with many tipping them to win their first finals since 1990. instead, the desert foxes, as they are known, bowed out of this competition without winning a game and that despite boasting the african footballer of the year, mares. so just confirmation of those results: senegal holding algeria to a 2—2 draw in franceville, coming from behind thanks to goals from papa diop and moussa sow. tunisia bagged second place with a 11—2 victory over zimbabwe, and they will play burkina faso on saturday. having failed to make an immediate impact at liverpool, lazar markovic has joined hull on a season—long loan.

the forward, who signed from benfica for $25 million three years ago, has been on—loan at sporting lisbon. meanwhile, jurgen klopp says that club legend steven gerrard will get every support from him in his ambition to become a manager. gerrard will rejoin the club as academy coach next month. being a manager is a job you have to learn. and when a person like steven gerrard, and the play he was, but more the person he is, is ready to make the steps, that's wonderful, that's wonderful news. all. because combining then the playing experience with all the things you learn from now on, it is a bright future. now, after playing just once in the last 18 months, tiger woods is preparing to play four tournaments in the next five weeks, as he sets his sights on competing at the masters in augusta in april. after a 15—month injury lay—off, the 14—time major winner only returned to golf in december.

but he has determined to push his body through a gruelling schedule, in a bid to get him ready for the first major of the year. at what point are you thinking about augusta, and when will you make that decision? i have been thinking about it. but you know, once the season ends, typically, you know, in the fall, and i start to think about what they need to do to get ready for augusta, i have done that for 20 years. and so, whether its equipment or its swing walk whatever it is, in the back of my head i am getting ready for augusta. —— or whatever it is. i would love to play, i would love to win. i have won at four times, andl love to win. i have won at four times, and i would love to add a fifth. britain's double olympic boxing champion nicola adams is set to turn professional. she has signed a long—term promotional deal with the veteran promoter frank warren. his association with adams comes three months after ireland's london 2012 olympic lightweight champion, katie taylor, began fighting professionally.

more from the bbc‘s katie gornall. iam here i am here eating humble pie today, because i have not been the greatest advocate of women's boxing. as promoter frank warren announced his newest recruit, it felt like a big step forward for british boxing. but then, nicola adams is used to breaking new ground. last year in rio she became the first briton to successfully defend an olympic rocks entitled to be nearly 100 years. she is also the reigning world, european and commonwealth champion. almost every one of her major fights has ended with that they must smile. as an amateur, she told me she has nothing left to prove. there's a lot of goals in the professional ranks to achieve. becoming a world champion and european champion. so many girls to achieve in the professional ranks, hopefully trying to make women's boxing on par with the men's. announcement means the now giving up the chance to represent team gb. today team gb

the australian open where venus williams is in action. you can follow it all over on our website. but for now, goodbye. hello there. well, as forecast, dense, freezing fog caused some problems to travel for monday morning, and it really was quite extensive and dense in places, like this photograph proves in in eccleshall, in staffordshire. and it lingered on across parts of the south—east. and where it did linger, it really felt quite cold, temperatures hovering around freezing. but there was some sunshine around, and the return of clear skies overnight means freezing fog will make a return, so we're likely to see some further travel disruptions on tuesday morning. keep tuned to bbc radio and head online for the latest updates. so widespread, freezing fog developing overnight across england and wales. more of a breeze for scotland and northern ireland, and some milder air pushing in here,
1:56 am
with outbreaks of rain. but it really will be a cold start for england and wales. you can see most of the temperatures freezing or below, and the fog really will be dense, so take care, give yourself time on the roads. more of a breeze in western parts of england and western wales, so i think fog—free here, maybe a little bit of brightness. quite a contrast across scotland and northern ireland, a milder start to the day than what we saw yesterday morning, temperatures in high single figures. but there will be a lot of cloud, quite a breeze and outbreaks of rain, certainly across western upslopes of scotland. through the day it remains quite cloudy and dull here, maybe some further spits and spots of light rain, some of that pushing towards western wales and the south—west of england, but here, where we hold onto the cloud, it will be relatively mild, temperatures maybe ten, 11 celsius. but further east that you are, we should see the fog lifting to sunshine, but it will feel quite cold. and where the fog lingers all day
1:57 am
it is going to feel quite cold, with temperatures around freezing. the fog returns on wednesday morning for east and south—eastern areas. and i think it will lift into low cloud, so staying quite grey and cold here. a little sunshine further north and west, and remaining breezy and cloudy for scotland and northern ireland, with further outbreaks of rain. just making double figures here, but feeling quite cold elsewhere, particularly across the south—east. what happens is we pick up a strong south—easterly wind, and that will feed in a lot of cold and very dry air off the near continent, and it's going to feel pretty bitter if you add on the strength of the wind, with that cold air. now, because it is dryer air, we should start to see the clouds in the morning breaking up, so a bit of a grey start, and then the sunshine will break through across central and southern areas. maybe some spots of rain just getting into western scotland and northern ireland once again. here, temperatures around five or six degrees, but across eastern areas 1—5 celsius. add on that bitterly cold wind, it is going to feel more like —3 to —5. a very warm welcome to bbc news, broadcasting to our viewers in north america
