all. so mps were trying to get some assurances that they would have what they called a meaningful vote on all of this. they have not got that tonight, the labour side and tory rebels. there were some furious scenes in there as the vote was going on, i was in the reporters gallery and people like nicky morgan, a staunch remainer, was furious and having a go at the chief whip. obviously not happy with what she heard. and she abstained of all this. so tricky night of the government but they will be pleased they have managed to get all this through. they say they will be about when the deal is done about it will not allow parliament to send theresa may back to the negotiating table. is there anything we need to be aware of when it comes to brexit in the coming days and weeks? there is another day tomorrow on all this, a vote on the rights of eu citizens and again labour, the liberal

democrats, the snp and some tory mps wanting guarantees that eu citizens, the 3 million who live here will be allowed to stay. something the government should declare that now unilaterally and said they will be to stay. theresa may has said she hopes to be reciprocal deal because also concerned about the i million brits who live abroad and things something could be done almost as soon as article 50 is triggered. she think this will be in the early stages of negotiation when a deal can be done for both sides. much more on that in a few moments. but first sportsday. hello and welcome to sportsday. alastair cook speaks for the first time since stepping down as england cricket captain saying he could no longer give his all to the role but wants to continue breaking records for the side. leicester city are united behind

their manager claudio ranieri, he says there are not in a crisis. and we find out about an unusual form of preparation for the welsh rugby union captain alun wynjones. alastair cook says it will be great for england's cricketers to have a new voice with a new drive and new ideas. cook has been speaking for the first time since stepping down as england test captain. he told our sports correspondentjoe wilson he could no longer give his all to the role. every captain knows the ultimate direction. it's when, not if, the end comes.
6:35 pm
alastair cook told me he was managing his emotions. well, list the responsibilities he is now leaving behind. a test match cricket captain doesn'tjust toss the coin, he must be an on field tactician, a team diplomat, media politician, and in the case of alastair cook, the most dependable batsman. so i wondered if overall, he was just relieved to give it all up. i do not know if relief is the right word, to be honest it is really hard to sum it up. there'sjust something in me which knows that this job is 100% or nothing. and looking in the mirror knowing i could not do it was tough. but, you know, i have been very proud of what i have achieved, a lot of people to thank. obviously most importantly my friends and family, my wife, without her support and her family's support and my family's support i would not have done it for as long. you need a good network around me and trust me, i've got a good one.
6:36 pm
can you actually have a hunger now to pick up a bat and play, though,? you're a long time retired and evenjust coming back here and imagining what it would be like injuly, i'm hungry to score runs and hopefully i can do that. hopefully i can support the next england captain. and help drive the team forward. and whatjob do you thinkjoe root will do with the team? how do you think he will have to change if he does become england's test captain? most people are assuming that, i think. well obviously now i am no longer involved in those decisions, i will wait and see. and whoever gets thejob, it's going to be a very special time for him. or for them, whoever it is. and they're very lucky because they've got some very talented cricketers to drive forward and hopefully we can get, you know, we can drive england forward and we can win a lot more games than we lose. if you think of your job as captain a bit like a schoolteacher you have got some children will require more attention than others, perhaps you wish one person in the classroom did not require so much attention.
6:37 pm
how much did dealing with kevin pietersen actually spoil your time as england captain? i do not think it spoilt it. you know, clearly it was part of my reign in one sense, you cannot ignore it. but i have been very lucky to play with a number of fantastic cricketers and we have had some amazing times. and this is not the time to be talking about that, this is a time to reflect and i feel very lucky to have played with those guys and to share some very fond memories of those 59 games. leicester city manager claudio ranieri has been given a vote of confidence by the club. it comes with the champions dangerously close to the relegation zone. despite winning the title last may leicester have struggled to make any sort of impact this season. they have not scored a goal in the league this year and a run of bad results have left them just one point clear of the bottom three. the club though have released a statement offering their unwavering support, saying that past success was down to stability.
6:38 pm
i know the idea of the chairman, of the club, to everybody and for me it is ok. but i think this is more for you than for me. maybe the chairman wa nts to you than for me. maybe the chairman wants to stop all the speculation, you know every team goes down and there is speculation. last season was fantastic and we were very solid. this season war. speaking together, trying to help the team, support the team, support team—mates, it is fantastic. the dressing room is fantastic. there is no crisis. of course when you do not win you lack a little confidence, it is normal. but fortunately these players are warriors because they wa nt to players are warriors because they want to fight. they have already
6:39 pm
lived through the situation. good things and also the bad things. and for me it is important. i stay with the soldiers, the warriors, who know the soldiers, the warriors, who know the problems, they know the enemy. this is good. it is not only the players, i think the whole club, the staff, the fans, and the players and we all need to pull together. ultimately everyone wants the same outcome. nobody wants a relegation, nobody wants to be down there at the minute. and we do not want to be down there at the end season. if we're all pulling in the same direction at the same time, then that will serve as well. huddersfield town manager david wagner and leeds united counterpart garry monk have been charged with improper conduct by the football association. the charges come after the pair were involved in a confrontation near the end of the huddersfield 2—1 win in their west yorkshire
