welcome to bbc news, broadcasting to viewers in north america and around the globe. my name's ben bland. our top stories: after north korea hails a missile test, the us, japan and south korea call for an urgent meeting of the security council. tens of thousands take to the streets in mexico against donald trump's policies on immigration and building a border wall. thousands of people are ordered to leave their homes in california because part of a nearby dam could be about to collapse. and he won just one grammy award in his lifetime. but a year after his death, david bowie wins four for his last album. the united states, japan and south korea have requested an urgent meeting of the un security council to discuss north korea's latest missile test.
4:01 am
it's expected to meet later on monday. pyongyang has hailed sunday's launch of a medium range ballistic missile a success. but japan's prime minister shinzo abe said it was intolerable, while president trump said the us would back japan 100%. this report from our tokyo correspondent rupert wingfield—hayes contains some flash photography. this is the launch of a musudan ballistic missile, the same type that was fired from north korea into the sea of japan early this morning. today's launch was almost certainly timed so that north korea's dictator, kim jong—un, could crash a weekend party taking place on the other side of the world. president donald trump and japan's prime minister, shinzo abe, have been spending the weekend golfing in florida. mr abe was not amused by the north korean intrusion. translation: north korea's most recent missile launch
4:02 am
is absolutely intolerable. north korea must fully comply with the relevant united nations security council resolutions. in his response, president trump seemed less certain, even neglecting to condemn the north korean launch. thank you very much, mr prime minister. i just want everybody to understand and fully know that the united states of america stands behind japan, its great ally, 100%. thank you. kim jong—un recently promised to test a much more powerful intercontinental missile. president trump has vowed that will not happen, but it is not clear how he intends to stop it. north korea already has short—range missiles capable of hitting south korea, and medium—range missiles capable of hitting japan. the musudan is an intermediate—range missile, which may be able to hit us bases in guam.
4:03 am
the ultimate goal is a so—called icbm, able to hit parts of the united states and australia. for more than 20 years, the outside world has been trying to stop north korea, with tighter and tighter sanctions. and accelerate the deployment of new anti—missile systems in south korea and japan. but no—one seems to have any idea how to stop north korea from becoming a fully—fledged nuclear—missile—armed state. rupert wingfield—hayes, bbc news, in tokyo. some breaking news now, and officials have ordered people living down stream of one of the united states‘ biggest dams to leave the area immediately. there are fears that heavy rain in northern california
4:04 am
is causing serious problems for the oroville dam's emergency spillway. the california department of water resources says the erosion is not advancing as fast as they thought. the dam is just upstream and to the east of oroville, a city of more than 16,000 people. what is the latest about how you're hearing the evacuation is going? evacuations are happening quickly, there's lots of traffic with people trying to get away. in total 160,000 people could be in the potentially affected areas should the worse case scenario happen according to authorities but as you mentioned, the good news is in the last hour or
4:05 am
so the good news is in the last hour or so we've heard the erosion, which caused the problem, doesn't seem to have been happening as quickly as first feared. there's a hope the measures they are taking at the moment, which includes dropping rocks to fill the hole that's been created, that they're being effective and they should avoid the worst of it. we heard part of the pressure on the dam system caused heavy rainfall that caused the level of the lake to rise, any idea if the rainfall has continued all—weather that has paused ? rainfall has continued all—weather that has paused? it's been a summary weekend in california, which, compare to the last few weeks, where there's been heavy rainfall, there's a lot of relief there. to give you some context, it's the emergency spillway causing the concern here and that spillway hasn't had to be used in almost 50 years. so when this additional water was pouring into that spillway, they had expected to cope no problem but
4:06 am
because it hasn't been used for so long it seems to have been failing to handle even a fraction of what the emergency measures should be able to deal with. there's hope the rain will ease of. as i say, the weather has been good but california has been hit with a huge amount of rain in the last few weeks and that's caused this issue to arise. dave, thanks for the update. dave leave there for us. in other news: voters in switzerland have approved a measure to make it easier for third generation immigrants to become citizens. 60% of voters backed the proposal in a national referendum. the yes vote means the grandchildren of immigrants will be able to skip several steps in the lengthy process of gaining a swiss passport. the peruvian government says the former president, alejandro toledo, is likely to be still in the united states. he is wanted in connection with a corruption investigation. peru says us officials have asked for more evidence before they order mr toledo's detention. the former president has denied taking millions of dollars in bribes from the brazilian construction giant 0derbrecht while he was in office more than a decade ago.

hamburg airport in germany was temporarily evacuated and flights stopped after an irritant gas caused passengers to suffer breathing and eye problems. firefighters later said they had found an empty cartridge that had likely contained pepper spray or tear gas, which is sold in germany for self—defence use. nine people have been taken to hospital. it's one of the biggest nights of the year for the stars of the music industry with the 2017 grammys taking place in los angeles. peter bowes is in la. peter, bring us up to date with the awards that have been handed out so far. yes, the most recent at least in the big categories, another win for adele, winning four hello, song of the year, it's a major category that she has won before, five years ago when she won record of the year,
4:08 am
album of the year and some of the year. this year have story has been the competition with beyonce and in the competition with beyonce and in the next 25 minutes we will find ofthe of the year, will m ‘. 5—655? 1" qua gm it be beyonce or adele, the other nominees don't seem to have a look in this year! it has certainly been adele's night for more reasons than one. she performed a tribute to george michael and it was an interesting and unfortunate performance to start with, she lost her weight and she had to stop at one point. rather unfortunately she swore and then apologised profusely to the live television audience and the audience in the theatre as well and she started it again and she nailed it second time round, a really good performance, she was in tea rs really good performance, she was in tears at the end and she received a standing ovation. some other tributes by way of the awards that we re tributes by way of the awards that were given out, notably posthumously for david bowie? yes, david bowie winning a slew of awards for his final album. i think this is
4:09 am
certainly a very popular award, you could sense in the auditorium that people were really pleased that the grammys had finally honoured david bowie in a big way. this is for blackstar, his album that was released a couple of days before he died. interestingly he only ever received one competitive grammy while he was alive, he did receive a lifetime achievement award as well. but this album, a lot of the critics this time showed that he was still at the top of his game, some pretty dark lyrics but also a lot of humour and a lot of fun in that album as well. and one of the other big performances that's been generating quite a lot of attention, certainly on social media, beyonce? yes, beyonce performing from her album, two songs from lemonade and she wore a very glittery outfit, that's the only way i can put it, but it wasn't all about her outfit, although that
4:10 am
was eye—catching, it's the fact she is pregnant, having twins, she was sitting on a chair doing her performance and after leaning back on the chair you could feel a collective holding your breath to make sure she was ok but she pulled it off, a flawless and very long performance by beyonce. as i said, she is still in the running for album of the year. peter, thanks, we will be keeping an eye on things over there. and a little later we'll have the stars of film and television who've been taking to the red carpet for the baftas. tens of thousands of mexicans have been on the streets demonstrating to express their anger at president trump's immigration policies and his demand that they pay for a wall along the us border. protesters also criticised their own president, enrique pena nieto, after he invited mr trump to mexico during the presidential campaign. greg dawson reports. this was both a demonstration of a nation's pride and its anger at what they see as their neighbour's prejudice. the streets of mexico's capital
4:11 am
were filled with around 20,000 protesters, and various unflattering depictions of the us president. this man shouts, "trump, we are not going to pay," a reference to the president's policy that has caused so much offence. who's gonna pay for the wall? a promise he repeatedly made... we will build the wall, 100%, and mexico will pay for the wall. ..and is determined to fulfil. as well as demonstrating their opposition to a wall, marchers voiced their anger at donald trump's plan to deport mexicans have said no to allthat he has done. , , and we are against the wall, and deportations, and against all he is doing to mexicans over there, like they're enemies.
