magnificent hundred from root. in really tough circumstances. he is the dynamo of the england team. joe root has got used to being english cricket's great hope. now he faces something newer. great responsibility. the way in which he plays his cricket, he goes about his business, you would imagine it will lend itself to being a great captain. in january he became a father for the first time, he'll approach leading just as he does parenting. it's one of those things that you sort of have to learn on the job. i suppose being a dad you don't really know what to do until you sort ofjust have to go with it and see how it was, i imagine that would be very similar. you could see baby alfie is already in white, this is after all a family that starts them early. you'll find the root of root amongst fertile yorkshire cricketing soil. here on the outskirts of sheffield is where it began forjoe. root still goes back to sheffield collegiate which has ready produced one england captain in michael vaughn. his brother billy and dad matt also played here and the name has appeared on local scorecard scorecards further back still. the family are everywhere, even upstairs where grandma

barbara plays bridge. so how do those who know him best judge joe's hand? yes, i think it should be ok but you can only really tell when they get in the job. it's very much learning on the job. being a cricket captain. and there is a lot of onerous responsibility being england cricket captain, hopefully it will be successful. you see roots don't get carried away. despite joe's progress from sheffield to yorkshire to england to world number one batsman for a time, he's already scored 11 test centuries and plays all three forms of the game, still there are concerns. he has only rarely led his county and might root the captain compromise root the run maker? they don't dwell on that around here. it is a big job butjoe is that kind of person who will take it in his stride, i think he's more than capable of dealing with the pressures of what captaincy brings. root inherits a team that lost 4—0 in india last year and faces south africa in the summer before

tourof india...joe has india, had he got thejob before the tour of india... joe has got the tea m tour of india... joe has got the team at a good time. i'm hoping it goes really well. i'm a bit worried it's going to knock his batting, that's my major concern. we've certainly seen him produce the goods with the bat england, scoring those runs. do you think the captaincy will have a negative impact on that? i hope it doesn't. it's done wonderful things were guys around the world like virat kohli and steve smith. very different characters. he's a brilliant character, brilliant fun to be around. i think some of that makes him the batsman he is. in the last year or so he's tried to be more sensible and show he's matured, his batting has lost a little edge. i think he's trying to be too sensible. i hope he reverts back to the old joe. like his grandad said, he's mad keen, the mad being the operative word. ben stokes

comes in as his vice captain. what will their relationship be like? they'll have a very good relationship. they are both very similar characters, both aggressive in the way they play the game. i think it's a good appointment. it's showing andy strauss that they want this team to move forward and be aggressive, to grab the game by the scruff of the neck. i think it's a very good appointment. i hope then will keep saying tojoe, don't be conservative, don't fall into the old traps every england captain has, by michael vaughan. don't set big totals to defend, get in there, wind these games, be aggressive and go down in history. thank you. tributes from some of england's former players have been coming in throughout the day, the best one is probably this from former captain michael vaughan. his endorsement simply says, "i bring you the pair now in charge

his future? he doesn't play tonight against a side that has shipped so many goals recently, then does he have a long—term future at manchester city? what do you think pep guardiola's thinking will be with regards to aguero tonight? will he start? i think he will. the fact bournemouth have been conceding so many goals this season, they conceded 3—4 goals too many times this campaign. they are leaking like a sieve at the moment. although he has sane, he won't win the title race with the youngsters. i think he needs the old head of aguero. i think ill play aguero tonight. if he doesn't, then i can't see what long—term future he has at manchester city. thank you. the west ham united manager slaven bilic has been charged with improper conduct
