time for sportsday. hello and welcome to sportsday — i'mjohn watson. coming up tonight. a pie, a goalkeeper‘s resignation and now an fa investigation — how the sutton story has taken a turn for the worse. keeping his eye on the ball — why pep fears a backlash from his critics if city fall in the champions league. and why athlete welfare is being prioritised by uk sport. hello and welcome. sutton united's fa cup tie with arsenal was meant to go down as the one of the biggest moments in the club's history. but the resignation of their reserve goalkeeper threatens
6:33 pm
to overshadow their moment in the spotlight. wayne shaw's decision to eat a pasty on the sidelines of their fifth round tie was meant to be a bit of fun. but when it emerged a betting company had offered odds on him eating the pie during last night's fifth round tie, it prompted an investigation by the fa and the gambling commission. and that led to his departure. patrick gearey has been following developments. we did not expect to be talking about sutton united and there are 46—year—old reserve goalkeeper today and even less in these circumstances. but when short was asked to resign but the club and agreed to do so. it began in the dugout during the cup tie with arsenal when he was caught on camera eating pie. he had become something ofa eating pie. he had become something of a cult hero because of unusual size for football but it turned out that the son of a bookmaker had offered odds of eight to one that he would be caught on camera eating

pie. but it prompted speculation as to whether betting laws had been broken. the gambling commission launched an enquiry and the fa also did, and there was an investigation. they said that integrity in sport is not a joke and an investigation had been opened into what had happened. sure responded. it was a pasty, there were not any pies around. maybe it was just something for the publicity. but you knew about the bet? someone said there was a dog running on the pitch or the lights going off. it wasjust all humour. because some people have suggested the fa should investigate this. definitely not. were told were not allowed to gamble. so i would not put anyone in jeopardy. allowed to gamble. so i would not
6:35 pm
put anyone injeopardy. this is definitely not the case here, just a bit of fun. and i was hungry. if it was applied whoever it was, it was a pasty i was eating. well sutton were not happy. the game against arsenal was the biggest in their history and they said this has not painted them ina good they said this has not painted them in a good light. it has taken some attention away from their remarkable cup run. as they turned their attention back to the national league they will do so without wayne shaw and his significant presence. the sutton manager paul doswell joins me on the phone now. many thanks for your company. in your opinion why did wayne shaw have to go? it is only my opinion, i'm just the manager of this club but it was not the eating of the pie but the gambling implications and the fa ct the gambling implications and the fact that we are being investigated
6:36 pm
by the fa and gambling commission. and the fact that none of us are allowed to bet within football. i think it is quite clear that has happened. but there is no suggestion that wayne placed a bet. so in some way does that absolve him from wrongdoing? i think you're asking the wrong person that type of question. apparently over 2000 bets we re question. apparently over 2000 bets were made, i'm told. and obviously when put himself in a position where he was part of that. and the club we re he was part of that. and the club were not happy with that. 0bviously the club last night, you had a lot of branding up there and you had aligned yourself quite closely with the betting company. 0ne aligned yourself quite closely with the betting company. one of the stand is sponsored by them. do you think the club made a mistake doing that and as a result wayne paid the
6:37 pm
price? not at all, if you look at rupert murdoch, he owns sky and you see everyone showing that in the premier league. this is a chance for us premier league. this is a chance for us to make the club better with money going in to the building of new classrooms, new dressing rooms. soido new classrooms, new dressing rooms. so i do not see that at all. have the club had any contact with the fa oi’ the club had any contact with the fa or gambling commission today?|j believe or gambling commission today?” believe they have. it is a tough day because he is a good friend of mine. and ultimately when i got up this morning, from the moment i turned on my phone until now it has just been one thing after another and not in a good way. i feel very sorry for wayne. ultimately responsible i suppose for your actions of the what
6:38 pm
is your overriding feeling today because your side put in a great performance last night to fight —— despite defeat to arsenal. has this soured things for you personally and those involved with the club?m soured things for you personally and those involved with the club? it is a very sad day and so yes it clearly does. he is a good friend of mine and we have known each other for more than 30 years. he is a great character. i think when the cameras panned in on him on the leeds united day, his profile went through the roof. it was meant to be a fun thing and it ended up the implications of it not being fun. that is the problem that has been created as of yesterday and now today. while we await the outcome of those investigations from the fa and gambling commission but for the moment, many thanks forjoining us. manchester city's manager pep guardiola says his club's critics will "kill them" if they don't reach the quarter—final of the champions league.
6:39 pm
they will be without captain vincent kompany as they face monaco in the first leg at the etihad tonight. and that's where we can join our sports correspondent andy swiss now. it is by many think city can win but their manager knows the opposition are going to be a tonight. -- it is are going to be a tonight. -- it is a tie. it is bluster here at the etihad stadium and a big night as you say for pep guardiola. as a manager he has never lost in the last 16 of the champions league and will hope the record stays intact against monaco. but monaco are top of the french first division, they have an incredible scoring record, 76 goals in 26 league matches. this season. 76 goals in 26 league matches. this season. an average of nearly three per game. there are the top scorer across all of europe's top divisions. and pep guardiola knows that his team are in for a test.
6:40 pm
they are intelligent, physically strong, they arrived in the box and complete. the most successful team in europe in terms of scoring goals. soa in europe in terms of scoring goals. so a tough draw. we look forward to playing against them, and that is a compliment because they are really good. city are without some of their key players. no vincent kompany who has the knee injury and gabrieljese is also out after a fractured metatarsal. all eyes will be on sergio aguero who had a tricky few weeks. monaco will be looking to radamel falcao for their goals. he had a pretty grim season at manchester united a few years ago. he will be hoping his return to this city goes slightly better at kick—off is at 7:45pm. city goes slightly better at kick-off is at 7:45pm. many thanks. there has also been a high—profile departure

6:42 pm
nicholl has also revealed that they were never given the full details of a 2012 internal review into the sport that may have highlighted some of the current issues being investigated. there are cultural challenges within sport and how we focused enough on that element of programmes where we can support the development of positive cultures to further enhance oui’ positive cultures to further enhance our medal successes. we always look for lessons. because the unique responsibility is to take the lessons and spreads across the rest of the sporting system. if you're looking for lessons to be learned why did you not take an interest in the report conducted post 2012 into the report conducted post 2012 into the culture of british cycling. we did not receive the king report. but you knew about it, everyone knew it was being done. we were given to
6:43 pm
believe that we had a very light touch version of it fed to us at uk sport. so we had no indication of the significance of that report. it is only now coming to light through the very well—managed independent review in cycling. you get the sense that uk sport for all its success in terms of medals in the past few yea rs, terms of medals in the past few years, is it true to say that winning has perhaps been given too much emphasis at the expense of welfare at times? there's no excuse for not actually addressing the duty of care and responsibilities towards athletes. they are our greatest assets and the ones that will deliver the medals. every programme should be trying to ensure that they have happy and successful athletes. and probably there has not been enough attention given in sport to how they do things, there's a lot
