the gulf news business section says caution has prevailed across global markets ahead of a potentially tense meeting between us president donald trump and his chinese counterpart, xijinping. both men will meet later today, as trade and north korea top the agenda the bloomberg website has an article on internet billionaire and aspiring rocket manjeff bezos, who said he sells $1 billion a year in amazon.com stock to fund blue 0rigin llc, the company which is fuelling his dream of sending people into space. and finally, good news for the clumsy among us, who regularly drop their iphones. the times reports that apple has secured a patent for a system that deploys protective bumpers automatically when a phone is falling towards the ground. joining us is nina trentmann from the wall streetjournal. good to see you. let's start with
5:47 am
the daily telegraph story. the deadly attack, the horrific attack in syria. it has forced donald trump's hand in terms of defining or clarifying his position on the country. it has. it has led to him stating this could not be tolerated, which i think is departing from previous positions that the new government in the us and also in the previous one had in terms of saying we would not engage in syria. i am interested that mr trump did not refer to russia, which is one of the key allies in syria, and of course it is quite interesting to see how this is playing out, because mr trump has also been very critical of us military engagement in iraq and
5:48 am
afghanistan. it remains to be seen whether this attack on tuesday is going to lead to him reversing us policy and becoming more involved. also the famously tweeted when a chemical attack happened on president 0bama's watch, some years ago, don't take military action, when president 0bama talked about crossing the red line, and we didn't know what the reaction in the us would be, trumped the businessmen we re would be, trumped the businessmen were saying don't take action. —— trump the businessmen. while he was addressing the press in the rose garden, we had the security council meeting in which russia said it was not the assad regime. this is the problem. it is this relationship between russia and syria, and whether the trump administration will put pressure on russia in terms of its role. yes, this whole dynamic is an interesting one. we have seen russia in the past backing the assad
5:49 am
regime. some months ago we were talking about the us being sidelined in negotiations going on in kaza khsta n in negotiations going on in kazakhstan about the future state of syria. so it is quite difficult for the us administration after this prolonged period where we have not seen a lot of us engagement to come back into the discussion, and now to enforce back into the discussion, and now to e nfo rce pressure back into the discussion, and now to enforce pressure on mr putin, particularly given the us and russia have had a difficult relationship since the inauguration of the new trump administration because of other issues. i guess trump is finding out how difficult being president can be. on the one hand he is trying to do some domestic policy with the 0bamaca re is trying to do some domestic policy with the 0bamacare repeal, are now he has north korea, syria, he has said for both of those he is willing to act unilaterally, but that is a difficult proposition. because president 0bama and president bush before him could not do much about north korea, and now he has syria to content with. he has a lot on his
5:50 am
plate. he does, and we now have that issue that because of the wars in iraq and afghanistan there is not huge public interest in overstretching the us in places which are relatively far away from home. in the meantime, an internal shakeup, as it were, trump's right—hand man losing a national security role. steve bannon was a very controversial pick anyway because of his background. very controversial pick anyway because of his backgroundm very controversial pick anyway because of his background. it is not the motion, apparently. according to him? according to his twitter account —— a demotion. him? according to his twitter account -- a demotion. it is an interesting scenario playing within a national security role which is very important. yes, the national security council has perceived itself in the past as being a nonpolitical body advising the president on security matters, and it was at the time a thing with a lot of raised eyebrows, that steve
5:51 am
bannon, former executive of breitbart news, was promoted into that important body. it was seen as turning the whole thing into a more political effect, i think, turning the whole thing into a more political effect, ithink, which turning the whole thing into a more political effect, i think, which did lead to a lot of criticism from mr trump. talking of politics, he has a very busy agenda ahead himself, meeting president xijinping. it will be very interesting to see how this meeting goes, given the background we have had their sour. the two have a lot on their plates, one can definitely say that. you mentioned the north korean issue and the point that the us wants china, as north korea's most important and maybe only remaining ally to put more pressure on north korea to stop its rocket testing. at the same time we also have economic issues between the two countries. you mentioned the trade deficit that the us has with china and you mentioned also the
5:52 am
issue that mr trump thinks that china is manipulating its currency, and he has been saying they have been using us as a piggy bank to rebuild china. so there is of course this issue between the two. do you think they feed into each other? in terms of trump wanting china's help, he has called for their help in terms of the leveraged they have against north korea. is trade the way to do that? is that the only way he can get china to sing from the same hymn sheet? it is an interesting one, because in the end geopolitical questions do not always closely connected china to trade. china has a strong interest in continuing trade at the level it is with the us, and it remains to be seen with the us, and it remains to be seen whether on the one side mr trump being relatively aggressive in terms of wanting to renegotiate trade, and on the other hand also saying please help with north korea. 0ne saying please help with north korea. one thing could be, of course, that there could be some compromise
5:53 am
between the two in terms of the south china sea, which china wants to have a stronger presence in. let's talk about the space race, i am skipping over theresa may, because we will talk about her again. jeff bezos, it might have been known thing he was really into space, but he is really going for it. he is putting his own money into the pot, a bit like richard branson and elon musk. he is a very rich man. he is selling $1 billion of amazon stock every year to finance that project. is it a good business move? i would doubt it. we have seen richard branson at virgin trying to get something in the space and we have seen delay after delay. we have seen some have seen delay after delay. we have seen some of his aircraft crash, so i guess in the end it is still a very untested proposition. i guess in the end it is still a very untested propositionm i guess in the end it is still a very untested proposition. it is a big risk but if one of these
5:54 am
billionaires gets it right, personal travel to space, it has huge rewards. there is also strong competition. elon musk is of the same calibre as jeff competition. elon musk is of the same calibre asjeff bezos, they are both willing to spend a lot of money and do great things. just really quickly, we have about 20 seconds to talk about this number on the edge of the iphone which could save the screen from being cracked. of the iphone which could save the screen from being crackedm of the iphone which could save the screen from being cracked. it is a new patent apple has been applying for, and the idea is that once your phone is dropping it will put out little bumpers which keep it from cracking. it is a great idea. thank you very much forjoining us. we will be back very soon, for now it is goodbye. hello there. the weather story is pretty quiet for the next few days. a lot of dry weather, variable cloud, some sunshine, and generally light winds as well. it is all because of high pressure. now, during the course of the night,
5:55 am
most places will be dry, maybe a little bit of light rain across the north—west of scotland. more of a breeze here. but where you have the cloud, relatively mild, 7—9 degrees. where the skies clear, cool, perhaps with a touch of frost in some rural places. so a quiet looking start to thursday. most of us will be seeing light winds, but across the north, high pressure, in towards northern and western scotland, more of a strong, north—westerly breeze. that will fit in quite a lot of cloud to the northern isles. west scotland, some drizzle, with the east of scotland potentially seeing some shelter, so a few of you could be seeing some breaks and some sunshine. variable cloud, maybe a bit of sunshine for northern england. i think much of wales and england, variable cloud and some sunny spells. i think probably the best of the sunshine in south wales, in towards the south—west of england, where we could make 15 or 16 degrees. on friday, a similar story. light winds for most, variable cloud, also some sunshine. the high pressure is with us for thursday and friday, but it moves position as we head towards the weekend. this is pretty crucial, because we then start to pull a southerly wind off
5:56 am
the near continent. it is drier air, and eventually it will be warmer air, particularly as we head on into sunday. notice the blue colours behind me, though. this is an approaching weather front, a cooler mass of air, which will arrive across the far north—west of the country as the weekend wears on. so i think, for saturday, probably a greater chance of seeing more sunshine around. temperatures up just that little bit. 15, 16, maybe 17 celsius. more cloud, though, across the north—west of the country. it is looking pretty good for the grand national, as well. aintree, on saturday, a lot of dry weather, temperatures around the mid—teens celsius. now, on sunday, that weather front approaches northern ireland, western scotland. strengthening winds, and feeling quite cool, outbreaks of rain. but for england and wales it is looking much sunnier, because we are pulling down to warmerand drierairoff the near continent. it is going to be really warm, with temperatures in the low 20s celsius. we could make 23 degrees across the south—east. so the main message for the next few days — because of high pressure, it is going to be largely dry,
5:57 am
with light winds. there will be some sunshine around. it is going to get warmer this weekend, especially on sunday. but, like i mentioned, that weather front with the colder air behind it spreads its way southwards during monday. so a cloudy, cool day generally. temperatures in the north struggling to get much above eight or nine degrees. still fairly mild in the south—east. hello. this is breakfast, with charlie stayt and sally nugent. decision day over term—time holidays. in just a few hours, the supreme court will reveal whether parents in england can take their children away without breaking the law. that is, out of school. hello. this is breakfast, with charlie stayt and sally nugent. decision day over term—time holidays. in just a few hours, the supreme court will reveal whether parents in england can take their children away without breaking the law. that is, out of school.

good morning. it's thursday 6th april. also this morning: the us government ramps up the pressure on russia over its support for the syrian regime. jeremy corbyn says he'd put tax on private school fees to pay for thousands of free school meals. from today, bigger businesses will have to reveal how much
