mall, a pedestrianised seat. a lorry was driven into a number of people with reports suggesting two people we re with reports suggesting two people were killed, with reports that many others were injured. the swedish prime minister in the past few minutes said everything indicates the truck crash is a terror attack. the number of shots were reportedly fired. that is not yet confirmed. stockholm sources have told our security correspondent shots were fired in another part of stockholm where the attack took place. it is still a confusing picture. we can talk to someone who is in stockholm. tell us where you are and what you have seen. hello, i am in central
3:03 pm
stockholm stop waiting for information. as to what is actually going on. we heard the sound outside but i am not exactly sure what we heard. all we saw was a lot of people running from the area. they started evacuating the area. they started evacuating the shops. the art to far—away to be able to see exact details. —— we are too far away. we are waiting for information. we are looking at pictures that indicate people panicked from what they heard. many running away from the shopping mall. that is one of the biggest areas. you have a lot of people circulating around one of the biggest shopping malls in central stockholm. they
3:04 pm
evacuated the area, all the shops, small shops, also. many people waiting for information in offices, whether to leave the building. you described hearing a sound. can you be more specific? what was going through your mind when you realise something was going on? we heard something was going on? we heard some thing and then started to go to the window and saw a lot of people going away from the area. the police evacuating. i cannot tell you what i heard. given events around the world, there is always a worry that areas like this, these events happen? that is correct. we have no direct speculation of what it could be. we are worried about employees around to make sure they get safe.
3:05 pm
before thinking about what is going on and going into more detail. thanks forjoining us. stay safe. with me is now is our correspondent andy moore. bring us what we know. the first reports came from swedish police just before 2pm. they said a lorry had driven into pedestrians in the centre of stockholm and several people were injured. the updated information, the most important piece of information, is from the swedish prime minister, who said everything indicates the crash is a terror attack. that substantiates other indications we were getting according to swedish television, who had been told by police it was being treated as a terror attack. we had indications from the swedish intelligence agency it was an attack. the information seems to be trending in one way. casualties,
3:06 pm
swedish police say least two people are dead. witness reports say that more may be dead. we had reports of bodies lying on the ground, covered in blankets. so the death toll may rise. swedish police told people to avoid central stockholm. the subway system in stockholm has also been closed down and it seems to be treated as a serious attack. i have seen pictures. we can see a large blue lorry. it is a beer truck, which has crashed through pedestrians and into a department store. there was a fire in the cab of the lorry. the main part of the lorry was not affected by the fire, but there was a fire in the cab of the lorry. there are unsubstantiated reports from the scene of shots
3:07 pm
being fired. we are also getting reports from our security correspondent, who has been told by swedish sources shots have been fired in another part of stockholm from where this truck attack took place. we have no other reports on that at the moment. we don't know the status of the driver. there was a fire the status of the driver. there was afire in the status of the driver. there was a fire in the cab, when it crashed into the department store. we don't know if the driver has been arrested, injured, orwhether know if the driver has been arrested, injured, or whether the driver is one of those people killed. twitter, i am looking at the stockholm police twitter feed. killed. twitter, i am looking at the stockholm police twitterfeed. they are using a news agency but saying the suspect in the truck attack has been detained by police. no clarification or confirmation. as you were saying it is not the swedish prime minister said that may confirm what many fear. that is right. it has the hallmarks of a
3:08 pm
terror attack that we have u nfortu nately terror attack that we have unfortunately seem in other cities, in nice where a truck was used to kill pedestrians. in london we saw a vehicle used to kill pedestrians. at first, it could have been a terrible accident, but all indications are it isa accident, but all indications are it is a terror attack. the vehicle itself, there are reports it may have been stolen, the driver may have been stolen, the driver may have been stolen, the driver may have been kidnapped, certainly the important information from the prime minister, it is treated as a terror attack, in the centre of stockholm. these pictures were taken by the person we just these pictures were taken by the person wejust spoke these pictures were taken by the person we just spoke to. this is what he was talking about, pictures of people running out. it is an eerily familiar scene. we saw it in londonjust over two eerily familiar scene. we saw it in london just over two weeks ago. as with that attack, confirmation of dead, there will be a lot of people injured if somebody drives a lorry
3:09 pm
into a crowded area. we have no indication of the number injured. we saw in the aftermath, people running from the scene in panic. the police, according to witnesses, did not quite know what was going on and we re quite know what was going on and were drawing weapons. the police in sweden are routinely armed. i saw pictures of a police officer in a gas mask of some sort. there was concern in the area, the emergency services, the public, did not quite know what they were dealing with. we have heard from the swedish intelligence agency saying that this was a deliberate attack. horribly familiar picture emerging of a brutal attack on innocent civilians ata brutal attack on innocent civilians at a busy time in a busy brutal attack on innocent civilians ata busy time in a busy area. brutal attack on innocent civilians at a busy time in a busy area. this is right in the heart of stockholm, a busy shopping area. we believe the
3:10 pm
street was a pedestrian area. pictures showed a large number of people in the area. if it were a terror attack, it may have been timed to cause maximum damage. if the driver of the lorry has been arrested, then that will give the intelligence services and the police something to act on. there are unconfirmed reports there may be shots in another part of stockholm. the subway system has been shut down and police urge people to avoid the centre of stockholm. parliament has been put into lockdown in stockholm. 0k, been put into lockdown in stockholm. ok, for now, thank you very much. that is the latest in stockholm. parliament is now in lockdown and we heard from the swedish intelligence agency this was a deliberate attack. we know that least two have been killed, many more injured. i spoke earlier to a british man who is on
3:11 pm
the same street where the incident happened. i was sitting in a cafe in the same street. i just suddenly saw people coming in, talking about the lorry that had driven into people. then they walked out. there were just many people on the street. it isa just many people on the street. it is a pedestrianised street and i was at the other end and very quickly the police cordoned everything. so i could not really see everything. my end of the street is higher up and i could only see what was going on at the other end. it looked like there we re the other end. it looked like there were many people standing, taking photos of police, and helicopters everywhere. tell us what you can see now. you are outside the police
3:12 pm
cordon, but can you give us a sense of what is happening from wage while? it looks relatively, you could say peaceful. most of the street is cordoned off. there are a lot of police everywhere. people walk around, take photos, trying to get away from it, but there is, yes, ican get away from it, but there is, yes, i can only see police. i don't know what people are saying to you. there is obviously a sense of people being very scared when any kind of vehicle mounts a pavement, or is hitting pedestrians, but is anybody saying anything about what might have caused this to have taken place? nobody has talked too much other than the fact they kept saying someone than the fact they kept saying someone drove than the fact they kept saying someone drove over than the fact they kept saying someone drove over other people. someone drove into a crowd. where it
3:13 pm
happened it does not sound like it could be an accident very easily because it is a pedestrianised street and people said the lorry drove into the pedestrianised street, but i could not really see it. give us a sense of the area. i don't know how well you know it, but give us a sense of what happens in that area of stockholm. 0k, it is the heart of stockholm. it is on a crossroads where the main pedestrianised shopping meets a high road that leads to the central train station. also this area is quite close, for construction workers at the moment. there are lorries there, engaged in construction work and pass this site. the actual crossroads is just a crossroads
3:14 pm
between a very busy pedestrianised shopping street and one of the central streets of the city. so it is very much the very heart of stockholm. so a lot of people around, especially at the time of day it happened. about 1pm your time? probably more 2pm. swedish time, it istm time? probably more 2pm. swedish time, it is ipm british time. i think it was closer to 2pm. i walked on that piece of the road 2pm and still nothing had happened so it was probably after two. people were starting to go back home from work. it is friday afternoon, so it is very busy. he had been on the street in central stockholm when a truck ploughed into pedestrians. we know that at least two people have been

killed. we are hearing many more are injured. the swedish prime minister said sweden has been attacked and the indications are that this is an act of terror. he has had a press conference. that was his brief statement. the swedish brewery company which reportedly was hijacked early in the day. that is a cording to unconfirmed reports. frank gardner just saying cording to unconfirmed reports. frank gardnerjust saying that cording to unconfirmed reports. frank gardner just saying that the swedish media are saying that the truck used in today's attack was hijacked from a brewery company. a manjumped into hijacked from a brewery company. a man jumped into the hijacked from a brewery company. a manjumped into the cab and drove off with it. it does seem a very swiftly developing situation, but the latest we have is the truck used in the attack that took place around ipm this afternoon our time, 2pm in

correspondent frank gardner. no idea yet as to whether that is connected to this attack in the heart of stockholm. witnesses told local media bays saw the lorry driving into the window of a department store and saw people lying on the ground. they said some had been run over by the lorry. they describe the scene as total confusion. many people totally shocked. we can speak to the ceo of a pr firm. i think you are ina to the ceo of a pr firm. i think you are in a locked down conference building. describe the scene. right now we have maybe a0 people. the mood is positive. people are afraid, perhaps more so than anything else about the uncertainty. it is a strong mood. we are trying to gather information as i believe you are. when were you aware something had happened? we are very close to the
3:18 pm
incident. maybe five minutes walk. we were about to leave. we are on a conference. there was a tonne of policeman outside, lots of ambulances, fire fighters and so one. what went through your mind when you saw that? i'm sorry? what went through your mind as all this was going on outside?” went through your mind as all this was going on outside? i suppose it ta kes a was going on outside? i suppose it takes a while to sort of... i would not say shock, bewilderment, maybe. to try to get essentially an idea of what happened. we are in a locked down building. apart from being told not to stand near windows, we are feeling quite safe. more than
3:19 pm
anything, i suppose it is a feeling of, oh, no, here we go again. it is not a fun experience, in a way. jp hansen, thank you. stay safe. thank you forjoining us on bbc news. we will bring in security correspondent frank gardner. you have just returned from here. i was there yesterday and the day before and ironically, at a security conference. i do not think sweden was prepared for this. the last big terror incident was 2010 when a failed suicide bomber blew himself up failed suicide bomber blew himself up in failed suicide bomber blew himself upina failed suicide bomber blew himself up in a car in central stockholm, which shocked swedes, but insiders have been concerned for some time that sweden has been a bit lax about security. they have good intelligence gathering. there are equivalent of mi5, or the fbi, have
3:20 pm
their finger on equivalent of mi5, or the fbi, have theirfinger on the equivalent of mi5, or the fbi, have their finger on the problem, equivalent of mi5, or the fbi, have theirfinger on the problem, but equivalent of mi5, or the fbi, have their finger on the problem, but the legislation is not there to deal with it. they know there are terrorist financiers. i am going to stop you. the swedish prime minister says one person has been arrested, which is significant? yes, if they have the right person. a lot of people were arrested in the wake of the westminster attack, which has not led to convictions, or anybody being charged and convicted, as far asi being charged and convicted, as far as i know. yes, it is a start. the swedish media reporting two separate incidents. unconfirmed reports of shots being fired in a different pa rt shots being fired in a different part of stockholm. it does not have the security lockdown you would have in the centre of whitehall. if you think of the crash barriers outside the houses of parliament, which would stop a truck bomb. there is not something similar in the centre
3:21 pm
of stockholm. it is a peaceful place. this happened in dropping gasson, —— drottningatan. it is a busy commercial area. the police know there is a limit to what you can do is somebody gets in a truck and drives it at people. indeed, as in westminster. we do not know the motivation. i have no doubt so—called islamic state will claim this, as they claimed westminster, but there was no evidence to link them to westminster. if there were, we we re them to westminster. if there were, we were seen some sort of them to westminster. if there were, we were seen some sort of posthumous suicide video by now. the conference you attended, was looking at this sort thing? i don't inc be expected something like this, but it examined all aspects of physical and other security in sweden. most of it i did not understand because it was in swedish. but they are aware there is
3:22 pm
a problem because there are al—shabab a problem because there are al—sha bab fundraisers a problem because there are al—shabab fundraisers and isis fundraisers and boko haram fundraisers. there are parts of certain cities like gothenberg, where police are reluctant to go into some of the suburbs stop there are people in swedish intelligence who know the fundraisers, but they cannot close them down. donald trump got into difficulty when he created problems in sweden. i am sure he will feel vindicated by this. sweden has been relatively unscathed by the wave of attacks that went across continental europe in the past two years, in france, belgium, holland, and germany, of course. they are not naive. they knew sooner or later something would come. osama bin laden, before he was killed, he was not aware swedish special forces we re was not aware swedish special forces were active in afghanistan. he said,
3:23 pm
do you see us attacking sweden? we don't because they are not at war against us. they work. but discreetly. they have very good special forces and good discreetly. they have very good specialforces and good police discreetly. they have very good special forces and good police and intelligence. people i have spoken to say they are hamstrung thereby wea k to say they are hamstrung thereby weak legislation, which is in the process to harden it up and bring it up process to harden it up and bring it up to date so it is fit for purpose in 2017. we heard from the witness, in the back of their mind, here we go again. we have a city in lockdown, a huge crime scene. inevitable comparisons with london and other cities. we have to be careful before we ascribe who is behind this. the immediate reaction of everybody, including myself, to the westminster attack, this looks like somebody responding to the call from isis to do exactly what he did will stop but actually, he never
3:24 pm
shouted what jihadist will stop but actually, he never shouted whatjihadist do when they commitan act shouted whatjihadist do when they commit an act of murder. and even though isis claimed that, there is nothing to link him. there was a man with psychological problems and a violent personality disorder. that may well be the end of it. let's wait to see who has done this. what we know is he hijacked this truck from a brewery company. that was earlier in the day. it was delivering some drinks and the cab was not occupied and hejumped in and drove off and used the truck to mow down people in this pedestrian street. i don't know if reports of shots in another part of the city are linked or even a terrorist incident. but stockholm right now is jumpy. it is a small city and not used to this. three people confirmed dead according to swedish police. it
3:25 pm
is the nature of these attacks many will be injured. in terms of what security agencies are doing, obviously a different dynamic, if they have the man at the wheel of they have the man at the wheel of the truck. but, a lot of searching will be going on in various places right now? the way post-incident investigations take place has changed radically in the past ten yea rs. changed radically in the past ten years. it has moved into the digital spheres. they will want to talk to the last person who saw him. talk to neighbours. who did he know? was anybody else involved ? neighbours. who did he know? was anybody else involved? right now, stockholm is in lockdown and the central station, they have stopped trains. the metro was close. a friend on the way to the airport cannot get there. the city is paralysed right now. digitally, they will want to get a hold of his
3:26 pm
phone, go back through his records. who was he in touch with? was he on encrypted apps? did he have more than one phone? did he search jihadist websites? did he have manuals? it might be somebody with a personality disorder, a mental illness. nevertheless, a city in lockdown, parliament in lockdown, people dead, people injured. this is the nature of terrorism, whatever thatis the nature of terrorism, whatever that is motivated by. the nightmare scenario here is a marauding firearms attack, someone getting hold of automatic weapons, like they did in paris, where you have powerful automatic weapons with ammunition sprayed around a crowded place. that is the nightmare scenario, which they would not be able to stop immediately. they would be able to react quickly, and it would not last long. they would not
3:27 pm
bea would not last long. they would not be a hostage situation for more than any be a hostage situation for more than a ny few be a hostage situation for more than any few minutes but in that time people can die. it comes down to good intelligence, intercepting, human informants, what the speaks call getting somebody upstream inside organisations to get the heads up if an attack is planned. thank you. we can now go live to sweden, to the editor in chief of the main newspaper in stockholm. we can join him by skype. it must be a hugely busy afternoon for you. bring us up with the latest you have. three people have been killed and at least eight are injured. i see on twitter right now the speaker of the swedish parliament has called it a terror attack. the prime minister said everything pointed to it being a terror attack but the speaker now says it is, which is what we are
3:28 pm
hearing at this moment. the intelligence service said it was a deliberate attack. three people have been killed. you say eight have been injured. still a massive operation in the city centre. do you have reporters on the ground, what are they telling you? we have reporters all over the city and one of them saw when police took someone in. we do not know if that person was connected to the incident, but it happened and we saw it. the prime minister confirmed that one person has been arrested. what we have also heard is that shots were fired did another part of stockholm, away from where the truck hit pedestrians. do you have information? that is something the police have confirmed. if it is connected to this incident,
3:29 pm
it is too early. but we have reported it. iwonder it is too early. but we have reported it. i wonder if you can give an indication of sweden's readiness for this kind of attack? the police and security police have for a long time talked about and increased terror risk in sweden. there has been preparation for this not least after attacks in germany, france and london, but when it happens, it is very dramatic indeed. we arejust happens, it is very dramatic indeed. we are just looking at the latest pictures from the centre of sweden. give us an indication of what happened and how it would have affected people on friday afternoon at lunchtime in stockholm? this is central stockholm, a busy area, a shopping district. a lot of people walking there. not an area where we have ca rs walking there. not an area where we have cars and so the lorry should not have been there. the pictures you see of the lorry... thank you
3:30 pm
very much indeed. we must leave it there. you are watching a bbc news special, after a lorry has driven into a crowd of people in the centre of the swedish capital. sweden's prime minister said everything indicates the incident is a terror attack and advises people to avoid the city centre. american warships have fired 59 cruise missiles at a syrian airbase — in the united states' first direct action against president assad's regime. russia — which backs syria — says its air defences will be strengthened and condemns the attack, calling for an emergency meeting of the un. the attack, calling hello good afternoon and welcome. we
3:31 pm
will bring you the latest from central stockholm in sweden. in the last couple of hours we have now heard that three people have been killed, at least eight, may be more have been injured. a truck, we are told, cloud into a number of pedestrians in the pedestrianised area in the centre of stockholm right outside a popular department store. sweden's intelligence agency says that this is a deliberate a tack. we also had the swedish prime minister who said that everything indicated it was terrorist attack. we know now that one person has been arrested and we're being told according to swedish media that the truck that was was hijacked from a brewery earlier this afternoon. that is the area you see there on the map whether attack happened. it happened about two hours ago. with me is now is our correspondent andy moore.
3:32 pm
bring is up—to—date with what the know at the moment. this was an attack that happened about five minutes to two half—time in the centre of stockholm in a busy shopping district, the equivalent of oxford street or regent street here in london. initial ports where that a lorry had careered into a group of pedestrians and that several people we re pedestrians and that several people were injured. now we have it confirmed that at least three people are injured and the swedish prime minister has confirmed that this appears to be a terror attack. he is confirming what swedish intelligence agencies have told the media. we are also hearing that one person has been arrested. i've seen pictures of that and you can see a group of police officers, presumably, dressed in black surrounding a man on a street in stockholm. a separate location from where the lobby at
3:33 pm
three crashed into the department store. when it crashed, there was a fire in the cab, the truck itself was hijacked, we believe, there was a delivery to a restaurant in the centre of stockholm and while that was going on some and jumped into the cab drove the lorry. that is what we have at the moment. also, there is a lockdown stockholm, essentially, the subway has been shut down. the parliament as an lockdown. police have sent out a message saying that everyone should stay at home, if they are in the city centre they are to go home and to spread the message amongst their friends. so, it seems a terror attacks this afternoon in the centre of stockholm, three people killed, eight injured. it is the nature of events like this that people are very jittery and lots events like this that people are veryjittery and lots of other things are happening. that is right. we saw crowds running away from the scene, they did not know what was
3:34 pm
happening. we saw the shutdown of the subway, now we are hearing that the subway, now we are hearing that the central train station in stockholm is being evacuated under the orders of the swedish police. that is a short distance away, we do not know why it is being evacuated but as you say, in the aftermath of an attack like this that are often other incidents reported, sometimes their length and sometimes not, people are just nervous and afraid. we had reports of shots being fired initially at the scene, they have not been confirmed. we had reports of shots fired in another part of stockholm, none of those reports have been confirmed, by the police. we are not aware that this is an ongoing incident but certainly a lot of people in stockholm are very nervous and concern. thank you very much. on the line is lena edlund a stockholm resident, who's very near to the scene of the crash for us now. thank you for being with as i do not
3:35 pm
know if you saw it as a happened, but tell us what you do know. well, obviously i didn't see it when it happened. i ran into some people he did see it and they were too shaken to talk to me about it. this area is still being cleared of people and even though the police are telling us even though the police are telling us to all go home people are standing around because they want to meet up with their loved ones before they leave the area. there are still people moving around the area right now. are you looking at the court in the area, we do not know exactly where you are but can gives a sense of what is going on. a sense of panic that people want to link up with each of the? well, there is no panic, i have to say it is all very calm but there are a lot of people standing outside whether please tour does not go. i am a couple of blocks away from where it happened. ——
3:36 pm
standing outside somewhere people told us not to go. this is where the prime minister was shot dead in the 80s, and close to where the terror attack occurs a couple of years ago where a man blew himself to pieces in the middle of the shops. this is obviously the most targeted aryan stockholm for all these kinds of things. and trying to talk to the police. —— this is the most targeted area in stockholm. nobody will tammy exactly what is going on or they are saying is that we should avoid crowds. but it is hard to avoid a crowds. but it is hard to avoid a crowd in stockholm right now because all the tubes are closed and eve ryo ne all the tubes are closed and everyone is walking so all of stockholm is a crowd, basically. everyone is walking so all of stockholm is a crowd, basicallylj was going to ask you how much information you are getting from the police because things are coming through tears here in london we are hearing at the train station has been cleared, that has been evacuated that the parliament is in lockdown, how much do you know as someone lockdown, how much do you know as someone who was there in central
3:37 pm
stock and ? someone who was there in central stock and? obviously, cycling through stockholm i saw parliament was shut down and there is police everywhere, i can barely hear because of the helicopters. the traffic is at a standstill outside of this area where the police have cut is from the centre and the people are still actually leaving the area which i am surprised about. i saw children crossing the street getting out of the area. this is the major shopping centres so it will ta ke major shopping centres so it will take every one currie ages to get out. it is also —— so it will take eve ryo ne out. it is also —— so it will take everyone ages to get out. they are doing their best. but we can't get away from it because there was no cheap. obviously, something deeply shocking has happened there this afternoon we know that three people have been killed, can you give us an indication of swedish verse alli
3:38 pm
readiness. how shocking will people find that? -- kenny gives an indication of sweden's readiness. people were aware that this could happen because of the track that was during christmas shopping in central stockholm, so i think the police force have been training for these sorts of events and you can tell when you meet up with them that eve ryo ne when you meet up with them that everyone knows exactly what to do and there is police absolutely everywhere. i'd feel like the situation is under control. thank you for being with us, here. john comey you at the scene after the truck crashed what did you see? when i got there there were no police officers in the area, there was subway security and mauls agility only. some people were on the ground. —— that there was subway security and mole security only.
3:39 pm
some people on the ground doing cpr. that was a while before the first police car arrived and quite soon after that they started clearing the area. it took one or two minutes. because i think they wanted to clear the area but there was also a gas, stuck close to the burning hotdog vendor. did you see the driver? know idid not vendor. did you see the driver? know i did not see the driver. what did you think it happened? i study security policy and security so i was aware that something like that could happen and as the previous speaker said there was an attempted terrorist attack, or a terror attack that killed a few years ago only one street away from where this happened. it was quite a rush hour
3:40 pm
so happened. it was quite a rush hour so my initial thought was that this truck must‘ve been driving very fast —— must be driving way too fast. and there was a high possibility that this was some kind of an attack. and you were there, as people were receiving cpr. how many people did you see the medical attention?” receiving cpr. how many people did you see the medical attention? i saw only one person needing cpr on my side. i was not on the street where the truck had driven on, i was on the truck had driven on, i was on the other street of the department stores so i saw only the trot and people on the side which the truck had not german. —— i saw only the trot and people on the side which the truck had not driven on. the truck appears to have caught fire, we knew there before that happened at that time? i did not see the
3:41 pm
event, but the first thing i felt was a bit of smoke in the air, just asi was a bit of smoke in the air, just as i was starting to cross the street i looked at my phone and i saw the gathering of people and the car on fire. and smoke was coming up from the car. the file alone was an and. —— the fire are doing a gullon was on. i did you feel after this was on. i did you feel after this was going on around you? in the beginning ed did not know what it happened —— in the beginning i did not know what had happened. i took some bitter bust that are all over twitter right now and then i was standing there is the police started clearing the area and they began to scream about the gas, i ran away. along with a lot of other people, so
3:42 pm
that was the first few minutes which we re very that was the first few minutes which were very chaotic. as the previous speaker said, the police were very quick and knew exactly what to do. i got up to the major street i saw the police with bullet—proof rests driving down the street very quickly screaming driving down the street very quickly screaming everyone driving down the street very quickly screaming everyone to get out of the city. of course, a lot of people had just got off work and a lot of people were working and there were a lot of tourists so it's quite chaotic. of course, a friday afternoon with the metro shutdown, the central train station now in lockdown, it must be fairly chaotic where you are. i actually live only three kilometres from the place so i
3:43 pm
just got in the door when you called, so i am home. it was quite chaotic especially around the city centre and the subway station where i live there were a lot of people time to get home but did not have the ability to get home. good of you to give is your time. thank you. these are pictures of central stockholm where, as you can see, there is a police cordon in place and three people have been killed and three people have been killed and number of others injured. swedish police say they have no details yet on the number of people who were injured when a truck ploughed into pedestrians outside a department store in central stockholm. anna, tell us what you saw earlier
3:44 pm
this afternoon. i hadjust anna, tell us what you saw earlier this afternoon. i had just kept into the store and i was in the fitting room and i had not really started anything and i heard the noise i had the screens i saw the people as i walked out, immediately. just outside there was a dog and the owner was screaming. outside there was a dog and the owner was screaming. there was a lady laying with a severed foot there was blood everywhere and bodies on the ground everywhere. the sense of panic, people standing by their loved ones and also people winning away. really running away to the minor streets around. but, the sense of shared planning... pretty horrific scenes that you have witnessed, i do not know if you can talk as do what happened immediately afterwards, first responders on the scene very quickly i imagine. afterwards, first responders on the scene very quickly i imaginem afterwards, first responders on the scene very quickly i imagine. it got very quiet there was the noise and
3:45 pm
everything got quiet and then people started screaming and crying, obviously people were severely winded then people were running away. this is central stockholm said people were a couple of blocks away not realising what was happening in came onto the street. it took a few minutes into the police and ambulances came to the scene, i immediately got into, i am a photographer i used to send me to this, but i chose to get into safety, i stepped into a smaller street and got out of there. safety, i stepped into a smaller street and got out of therem safety, i stepped into a smaller street and got out of there. it was swiftly treated as a possible terrorist attack and we have now heard from the swedish prime minister that this was deliberate. i do not know if you can cast your mind back to those moments immediately afterwards, is that what you thought instantly that this was a terrorist attack that you are witnessing? i live in london, so yes, of course i did. i realised
3:46 pm
something was off immediately. i took the snapshots as stepped onto the streets and into a smaller street and got out of there, but there were still people not quite knowing what was happening and where people were coming from, suddenly people were coming from, suddenly people were coming from, suddenly people were shouting there was another car, running into different directions, what also happened was that the owners of the stores immediately locked down so people being locked into stores but also meaning that people on the street could not get into the stores, so a lot of people were just not knowing what to do and standing on the streets. yes, in shocki imagine, i do not know if you can give is a sense of how far you are from the area that this took place now, kenny give is indication. i'm very close. central stockholm is sealed off there are lots of police and
3:47 pm
activity going on, it is my birthday i was here the a spa weekend and staying at a hotel, i'm still here but very close to where it is. i think it is three blocks away. how much, information are you getting from hotel staff, we are hearing here in london that the train station has been evacuated and the parliament is in lockdown. could you give is a sense of the level of information you're getting from authorities there? i've been on the phone a lot, honestly, i've been talking to a few colleagues but comic yes the central station is locked down but you still see people wandering around here. people need to get home and that is pretty much it. they are trying to get home out of the city. it is friday afternoon there were obviously a lot of people... yes. thank you very much indeed for taking the time to speak to us. stay there safely in your hotel. thank you. you are having a copy with a work
3:48 pm
colleague —— you are having a copy. yes, we're just sat there and had a few sets of r coffey and people outside the copy shop, directly in the main central station across the road from the department store and people started to mass panic and run the other way. i thought that they we re the other way. i thought that they were chasing a celebrity or something because they all had phones out and then people started actually panicking and running into the cafe and get out of the back of it. and no we thought oh no, something serious is happened here. there was a lot of confusion where people were like winning out of the coffey shot... the people in the coffey shot... the people in the coffey shot... the people in the coffey shot was saying in swedish, don't worry sit down again. and then they started to crowd the window and
3:49 pm
that's when i started to see the police arrive at the station. the police arrive at the station. the police were yelling very loudly at the people to get out of the station. people started to one of the escalators and got out there, so i sat there for couple of minutes actually and then i said to my colleague, we need to go. as soon as we got out there it was calm. there was any police there. and then they started to yell and there was mass panic. wejust started to yell and there was mass panic. we just started to run as fast as we caught down the street, the main street towards the old town. what do think it happened? we did not really know soon as we walked out of the taiwan macro shot we could smell the burning the smoke. —— as soon as we could smell the burning the smoke. —— as soon as we we could smell the burning the smoke. —— as soon as we walked out of the coffee shop. we were com pletely of the coffee shop. we were completely confused we had no idea.
3:50 pm
ijumped to completely confused we had no idea. i jumped to that completely confused we had no idea. ijumped to that it must be a terrorist attack and we started to walk as far away as we could to another island which is where we are hiding at the moment. i cannot get home, we're trapped on this island which is the other side of the city centre. we sat by the harbour for a bit off the main road in case somebody mounts the care began. there was another mass panic where everybody ran again so we started winning. now we're waiting on the museum island across the panic. there was no way home whatsoever. whether first responders there very quickly when i happened? yes, it was less tha n quickly when i happened? yes, it was less than two or three minutes, the timei less than two or three minutes, the time i was at the coffee shop as a happened. as we walked down we ran we saw riot police with shields up.
3:51 pm
there was helicopters in the air pretty quick. i think the response was pretty rapid. it is such a spread out city i think there is a lot of confusion. i've had two collea g u es lot of confusion. i've had two colleagues winding up that there was gunshots for orfive colleagues winding up that there was gunshots for or five shots from where we were. —— i have heard from collea g u es where we were. —— i have heard from colleagues winding up. but, also they could have been a shooting to of three walks from where we were. we did not know where to go. we thought someone could come out with a gun or mount the care began. there is not really many barriers here as there are in london. —— or mount the ca rd there are in london. —— or mount the card again. all back in northern ireland where i am from, to protect you. thank you. thanks. swedish

police as saying that underground trains have been stopped in stockholm and commuter trains are leading the city empty at the moment. they are also saying that they cannot confirm at this stage, swedish police, that anybody has been arrested in that attack. haase in connection with that attack. although we are hearing from other sources that there has been an arrest. the swedish prime minister has been speaking to people and this is what he had to say. translation: sweden has been attacked, everything indicates that this is a terrorist attack. the government has obviously been informed all the time and we get continuous information. the government is doing everything to support the authorities who are working now. we as the public to be allowed and listen not at least to the police information. i would also say that we have at least two killed in this horrific terrorist attack and now we think about the victims
3:53 pm
and now we think about the victims and their families and the and now we think about the victims and theirfamilies and the injured is and that is all i have to say, now. i was time to stop him, now. iam i am basically waiting the information that we can evacuate. we heard... iam information that we can evacuate. we heard... i am not exactly sure what it was that we had but we saw a lot of people running from the area so we started evacuating all the shops around the area, but we are too far away to be to see more exact details. we'rejust at away to be to see more exact details. we're just at the board away to be to see more exact details. we'rejust at the board of the evacuation area so we're waiting for more information. we are looking at pictures that indicate a lot of people panicked by what they had and many running away from the shopping
3:54 pm
mall. yes, that is correct. they are evacuating one of the biggest areas where you have a lot of people circulating around. one of the biggest shopping centres in the centre of stockholm. they are basically evacuating all the small shops as well. most of the people in the officers awaiting the information to know if they can leave the building will not. you describe hearing some sort of sound, can you be a bit more specific, what to do think it was and what was going through your mind when you like the reasoning was going on? we just had something and only started going to the windows and we saw basically a lot of people going away from the area so we did not know what the police were causing around or what they were evacuating.” cannot speculate on that any more. obviously, given events around the world recently, there is always a worry that areas like this, these events happen. that is correct. we
3:55 pm
have no direct speculation of what this could be what is going on. we are encouraging people around is to make sure that they get safe. one of the... the president says that they stand shoulder to shoulder in solidarity with the people of sweden and they can count on the european commission to support them in any way that we can. an attack on any of a member state is an attack on us all. so, that is the latest from stockholm this afternoon, we know at this stage that three people have been killed and many more injured after a truck that we now believed to have been hijacked to stroke pedestrians in a pedestrianised area. much more on that coming up
