will always seek to undermine, dilate or simply eliminate all the gains that we won. that is who they are and that is what they do. they act for the powerful and the powerful back them. that is what we are up against, that is what our predecessors were up against. in never stopped them and it will not stop us. much of the media and their friends in the establishment are saying this election is a foregone conclusion. they think there are rules in politics which if you do not follow them, you do not win. you start by doffing your cap to the powerful people, excepting that para meters powerful people, excepting that parameters so nothing can really change. comrades, it is when you start accepting the parameters laid down by others, you cannot really

win. you have to challenge. our movement knows it. it is only by us standing together as the people for the many, not the powerfulfeud standing together as the people for the many, not the powerful feud that we really win. only labour has the policies that will challenge these powerful interests and transform the lives of working people. jeremy corbyn speaking earlier in aviemore. former ukip donor aaron banks has arrived in clacton for a visit today, after he said he will stand for election in the constituency. the trip follows his comments last week when he admitted he "knows nothing" about the essex seaside town. well, earlier our reporter andrew sinclair was in thorpe—le—soken, where arron banks arrived as part of his visit, to explain the reasons behind the trip. he arrived about ten minutes ago. he said he was looking forward to meeting local party members. he is at this hoteljust outside clacton, he is meeting local party members. we think he is going to give them lunch and he is going to tell them
1:41 pm
why he would like to stand over ukip candidate. we expect him to go into cla cton candidate. we expect him to go into clacton itself to do a bit of a walk around and actually meet some real voters. as you said, he does not really know this area at all. he told the bbc‘s sunday politics programme yesterday that he has only ever programme yesterday that he has only ever been to clacton once before but he does want to stand here and he said that he thought ukip would not put anyone up against him as a potential candidate. why does he wa nt to potential candidate. why does he want to come here? this all goes back to row which he had a few months ago with the then you keep and the douglas carswell, mr banks fault that he was not a true member of ukip and so he said whenever an election was held, he would personally use his own money to stand against mr carswell. since then, mr carswell has become an independent, he has left you get so perhaps mr banks was right in that respect and since then, the general election has been called. this meeting today is all about working out what the lie of the land will be. ukip was to hold its hustings on

wednesday night to choose their candidate for the general election so mr banks is time to find out what they think about him and now try to find out what he thinks about them. andrew sinclair reporting. the centrist candidate emmanuel macron will take on the far—right‘s marine le pen in the race to become french president. it's the first time in nearly 60 years that neither of france's established political parties have a candidate in the second round. my colleague karin giannone spoke to professor. he said the result was a big political upset. it is a fascinating time giving the result yesterday with the elimination of the candidates of the two traditional main parties. it isa it is a fascinating time to be here. how great and people is. it is absolutely massive if you look the

last six decades. we will know more about the parliamentary elections in june, whether the traditional parties can save some of their deputies, particularly the right, i think they have hopes of saving deputies and whether macron what have parliamentary majority for his package. what are your thoughts on why the french people have opted for these two candidates to go through to the second round? there was a school of thought that wondered if brad france had turned to someone with experience, someone with authority, particularly after the terrorist attack on thursday evening? he did not turn out that way. i think there are different reasons. the left... those fissures came to the service during this election campaign, much to the disadvantaged. on the right, he was about far short of qualifying for the second round so one should not
1:44 pm
exaggerate the blow. it is a huge blow but perhaps with another candidate we would have been talking today about the right thing in the second round. ithink today about the right thing in the second round. i think this is the way the right upper stringer, this isa way the right upper stringer, this is a failure of fillon more than a failure of the right. the scandals that have dogged him since the revelations. both accusations that fillon paid his wife. the involvement of his wife. it is still under investigation. now he has failed to qualify for the second round, the prisoners will restart. let's talk about marine le pen. is ita sign let's talk about marine le pen. is it a sign of her detox of addition of the party that she ended up at the break she did? this is a bad result for her. she was up 2896. in the department or an regional elections, the second all go elections, the second all go elections, the second all go elections, the national front did much better so to get 21, 20 2% will be disappointing for her and she will not have any chance of winning
1:45 pm
in the second... absolutely no chance of winning? the success of the national front marine le pen is that and their values are in the french debate. in terms of electoral representation, actually getting into power, there have been a fire in many regards. if you like what happened to her father back in 2002, would you say resembled the second round? he was eliminated who got 82%, his rival? people generally expecting marie le pen to do much better but still not triumphed over emmanuel macron. she will not win, she will get somewhere in the 305. she will get some 5upporter5 she will get somewhere in the 305. she will get some supporters and she would at some of these border5 she will get some supporters and she would at some of these borders of fillon. people who drifted away from le pen over the past few weeks will probably go back to le pen. she will do better than her father in the 5econd do better than her father in the second round, no doubt about that.

it will depend on ten out what happen5 over the next few weeks. it will depend on ten out what happen5 over the next few weeksm looks like a stark choice, almost a eu referendum at the moment, looking at these two candidates. it is a choice between a pro—globali5ation and anti—globali5ation, a choice between pro—europe and not, the arrogance , a between pro—europe and not, the arrogance, a high level of incontinent in the party of the national front. france is a very divided society but it is not unique in that respect as we've seen in the uk in recent weeks. that was the best sense of contemporary french politics at queen mary university in london. —— a professor. in a moment, a summary of the business news this hour but first, the headlines on bbc news: centrist emmanuel macron will face far—right leader marine le pen in the run—off for the french presidency after the first round of voting. jeremy corbyn takes his election campaign to scotland —— telling members of the scottish tuc that he'll fight to protect their right to take industrial action. a man has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of a former royal navy officer who was hit as his car

1:49 pm
why did the markers get quite so excited about a macron? what they are not looking at is the result of the second round of the presidential election in two weeks' time or what is actually happened. what they are looking at is what has not happened because one thing we know now is thatjean—luc melenchon, the hard left candidate will not figure in the presidential run—off. the businesses, very much the worse case scenario had been the possibility that french electors could be given a choice between the national front candidate marie lip pen and the hard left candidate jean—luc melenchon. neither are those are happy about that's plays in europe. what we have now is the potential run or run off between marine le pen and emmanuel macron. he is the head of all of the polls. they are quite happy with

that. as you can see at this graph, the french as this morning are more than 5.5%. that is the definition of a relief rally. we may see that initial burst of enthusiasm tailing offa initial burst of enthusiasm tailing off a little bit over the next couple of weeks because do not forget marine le pen is not be presidential run—off, it is not inconceivable she could win, even if all people say otherwise. at the moment, it seems the markets believe that emmanuel macron, he's the favourite, let's put it that way. what kind of economic policy does he have? what do they feel he might do? well, he wants to make life easier for businesses for a start. he was to reduce the burden of regulation for them. he wants to reduce taxation, he wants to reduce taxation, he wants to reduce taxation on businesses in particular and he wants to reduce public spending, cut down the number of public servants. they have the number of economic reforms in the pipeline. there is a potential hiccup here. do not forget that he will be the president, if few weeks

down the road injune, there will be parliamentary elections to elect the french government. he will then have to work with the prime minister. now, that premise may not come from his own party because his party en marche has only existed for under a year. it does not have the grassroots infrastructure that the other parties have. he may struggle to get the numbers in the french parliament to back up his policies which might mean he may have to live with a candidate from either the republican party or the socialist theory can recover their share of theory can recover their share of the vote. it might make life difficult for him going forward. the first artist to take the palace and the poll say he probably will, after that, yes to work out how he's actually done to govern. thank you very much. british companies are planning to test driverless cars on city roads and motorways in the uk, for the first time. the driven consortium is backed by government funds and led by the artificial intelligence firm oxbotica. it wants to put vehicles through their paces between london and oxford, aiming for a fleets of s vehicles by 2019. goals soccer centres, which operates
