6:30 pm
hello. this is bbc news. all the sport coming up in a minute. the shadow home secretary, diane abbott is denying her credibility is in question, after repeatedly getting her sums wrong in relation to a key labour election policy. in a radio interview this morning, she said plans to put an extra 10,000 police officers on the streets would cost 300 thousand pounds — rather than 300 million. she later said she had ‘misspoken‘ and did know herfigures. our home affairs correspondent dominic casciani is here with a reality check on labour's figures. what do we know, dominic? a pretty bad day for diane abbott, she struggled with this today but the key claim that she was making is that we have lost 20,000 police officers since 2010. this is a key issue in the campaign, the crime and

justice side. what happened with numbers, in 2010 we got to an all—time high in police numbers, 144,000 officers. in 2011 under the coalition government it began to fall away as police budgets were cut and as of september last year the number was about 122,000 or just above. so the verdict is police numbers have indeed come down by almost 20,000. so broadly she's correct in what saying. the issue is, this is part of a bigger trend which is that police numbers have been rising consistently over the long term. since about 1980 in fact so long term. since about 1980 in fact so the trend has always been going up. it is only recently that it has come down. but that decline since 2010 has been quite significant, around 13%. 2010 has been quite significant, around 1396. so in terms of how much it is going to cost to put these 10,000 extra officers on the beat?
6:32 pm
this is where she came unstuck this morning though she said she misspoke. what the labour government, the labour opposition are talking about is investing in 10,000 new officers. the number that they put on that eventually when it all became clear was £300 million. by all became clear was £300 million. by the end of the parliament. now that appears to be broadly correct. if what you're doing is counting the broad basic salary costs. so the cost of the officer, their pension and so on. but the thing is if you count up the cost of actually training those officers and equipping them, that is a lot more money and we think that is about another £130 million. labour says it can account for that through training budgets and making sure the core budget of the police is protected to deliver that but it is not clear where that money would come from if forces are making other

6:35 pm
in heart, that is always your aim to try to become world champion. so to achieve it once was a fairy tale but three times is just unbelievable. john higgins, the man u beat last night, says are the toughest opponent he has ever played against. to put that in perspective he has faced sullivan, hendry, that is some praise. it is, especially coming from someone like that himself, one of the greats of the game. so playing john higgins, it had been ten yea rs playing john higgins, it had been ten years previously since i got to my last final and now i'm playing him ten years on and to come out on top this time a tremendous occasion. you're still young at 33, can even beat the world record of seven world titles set by stephen hendry?m would be difficult to win any tournament now is tough, the standard is as hard as it has ever

been. john higgins said if anyone could match the record of stephen hendry he said it could be me because of the age i'm at the standard i'm playing up at the moment. but if i never win the world championships again i could retire happy but while i'm still enjoying iti happy but while i'm still enjoying it i will give it my best. and when you got the previous two world titles, you sang at the after party. deducing last night, and what?” think that i sang, from what i can remember! i think it was right at the end when the band had finished. i was told it was sweet caroline at five o'clock in the morning! they're probably correct! congratulations, go and enjoy it. mark selby, the new world snooker champion after retaining his title last night. that story from the world of athletics and proposals from the european

governing body of the sport to scrap some records as back as fare as 2005 as part of a bid to address concerns over doping. 0ur sports news correspondent andy swissjoins me. athletics has gone through a pretty torrid time lately but this is still a drastic idea coming from european athletics and what they want to do effectively is to rewrite the record books. they say on record since 2005 are reliable because that is when the authorities began to store samples for possible future retesti ng. samples for possible future retesting. so they say record set before that should no longer stand. that is a lot of records, dozens across track and field, some by british athletes, paula radcliffe and her record in the marathon set in 2003. today she described the idea as cowardly. alsojonathan edwards and his triple jump record from 1995. and colinjackson who still holds the indoor record in the

hurdles, he along with the others affected by this, it is less than impressed. i personally think the whole of my career is under threat with a statement like this. many of my top performances were done at major championships where i won gold medals. i broke the world record over the 110 meter hurdles at the world championships in stuttgart and i won the world title as well. so if they take that time which is still a european record, away from me, surely they must take the medals was well because you cannot have the medal without the performance. everything needs to be eradicated, itjust seems everything needs to be eradicated, it just seems ludicrous. everything needs to be eradicated, itjust seems ludicrous. the sport has huge problems at the moment and many to do with drugs but i am absolutely 100% behind any initiatives to combat that but this will not do that. it will not change anything. people are still going to cheat, still going to try to buck

the system. and it isjust a bit of a constructed to allow the sport to somehow wipe the slate clean when actually it has not faced all the issues properly but it brought upon itself. clearly a controversial plan, strong words from steve cram. how have they defended the idea? european athletics say it is about restoring trust in the sport especially in the wake of recent doping scandal. they say the record set before 2005 would still remain on the so—called all—time list but would not be officially recognised by the sport. they say they are sorry to the many innocent people affected by this but they said something simply had to be done. desperate times call for desperate measures and this is a very revolutionary approach by european athletics and we want to begin the trust of the public and ensure they can believe what they're watching. not a pr stunt? sadly not, it is the abolition of the sport and will address some dark days in the sport.

going back to the 1980s, it is germany, the former soviet union, this will put all this to bed. so when with this kick in question but what happens if the world governing body will discuss the idea at their next meeting in august before the world championships. we do know that sebastian coe as the head doesn't like the idea and so if it seems the record books in athletics could be in something of a rewrite. thank you very much. laura muir meanwhile will attempt to break zola budd's 32—year—old british mile record at the london anniversary games on 9th july, even though under these new plans that record would no longer stand. the scot holds five outdoor and indoor british records and ran a personal best over the distance last year. budd's mark, set in switzerland in 1985, is 4 minutes 17.57 seconds. muir says it would be ‘brilliant‘ to break it, one month before the start of the world championships. real madrid and city rivals atletico will meet in the first leg
