11:00 pm
to the saying not to speculate as to the cause of this. of course, we would agree with that. we will report things when we have them corroborated. these are live pictures that we are seeing. it emergency service vehicles parked on the bridge, giving assistance to people who are caught up in this incident. we do not know where the van went to, we do not know what relationship with the arrested man has. inevitably, it reminds people of what happened on westminster bridge, that fatal attack again involving a vehicle. that time it was in the middle of day. yes, that was in the middle of day. yes, that was daylight hours when a vehicle drove across westminster bridge. five people died then. it will also
11:01 pm
be reminiscent of various incidents in mainland europe. the christmas market incident where a lorry drove into crowd. also the attack in nice on bastille day. we do know we are getting reports core operating the same thing, a white van mounted the pavement driving at speed and hit several pedestrians. one twitter user on a street next to london bridge saying the same thing. people are still walking away from the scene and police are evacuating london bridge, clearly looking shocked and distressed by what they have seen. this is a bbc news and we are reporting an unfolding story that broke at about half past ten. about half an hour ago our time. the
11:02 pm
reports were initially that police we re reports were initially that police were attending a major incident. it involved one white van that was described to us by our reporter on the scene at the time who was able to raise the alarm along with several other pedestrians. that this van had ca reered several other pedestrians. that this van had careered into a number of pedestrians. and not just van had careered into a number of pedestrians. and notjust police vehicles but also helicopter and police boats out. again, you would imagine for this kind of incident, the normal procedure you would expect police to send a helicopter if they are trying to get a grasp of exactly what is happening. the police boats, what we know is that when the incident happened in westminster in march of list one person was knocked into the river. there would be so years, it may be standard procedure that police boats would be immediately deployed if this happened again. it is too early
11:03 pm
to say whether or not someone ended up to say whether or not someone ended up in the river but what we do know is we have seen and heard reports of police boats in the river. that could just be a caution. that would bea could just be a caution. that would be a sensible decision. the london mayor has just tweeted in the last few minutes to follow the met police uk twitter feed for updates. and a repeat above that of what the metropolitan police said earlier, that they are dealing with an incident on london bridge with more information when the twitter feed is updated. london bridge station is also closed and i think... i think we are going to speak to someone. we
11:04 pm
are the managing editor of the spectator was at the scene as well. he saw injured pedestrians and armed police as well is first responder as well as people running north from london bridge. he said it seemed that the south side of the bridge was where the attack was centred. we are joined was where the attack was centred. we arejoined on the line now by an eyewitness, giovanni. can you tell us eyewitness, giovanni. can you tell us where you eyewitness, giovanni. can you tell us where you were eyewitness, giovanni. can you tell us where you were when this unfolded? i was walking towards london bridge with my friends. we had just gone out to the pub and my
11:05 pm
friend saw something happening. there were people on the ground and everything looked off. i did not see anything with my eyes but my friend said there was a van and a van that hit people. we would not their right there, we were 200 metres away, we saw three or four people lying on the ground and then the police and the ground and then the police and the ambulance arrived. a friend of mine saw the van and i was showing to get in touch with you and with other newspapers to say that i was present. giovanni, could you
11:06 pm
pinpoint where the incident happened. we were the people who we re happened. we were the people who were knocked down by the van? the van was headed south. and it was actually in, like, on london bridge. we were actually walking from monument station towards london bridge station. thank you very much for describing to us so clearly what you saw. and chris is on the line, a member of staff here at the bbc. chris, tell us where you were when you saw this happen. a colleague of mine down on london bridge told me.
11:07 pm
i live 200 yards away. i was told there was something major happening so there was something major happening soi there was something major happening so i went down to see what was going on. as i walked down heading east towards blackfriars i started to see people running and walking away in the opposite direction from me clearly distraught. mostly young people, many in tears. men walking inaan people, many in tears. men walking in a an almost zombified state looking shocked. i heard from your previous call it appears that a van came down from the city into the london bridge area and then i have spoken to a few more people and it appears that there was a stabbing that took place at the same time and gunshots which people heard over a wide area all the way from suffolk
11:08 pm
bridge all the way to london bridge. people are multiple gunshots, gunfire, and at least 12 shots one person told me. by the time i got to the perimeter there were even more people who were put into a restau ra nt, people who were put into a restaurant, who were eating in the restau ra nt restaurant, who were eating in the restaurant and placed into lockdown. they were kept there for half an hour but they heard more gunshots. it is difficult in a situation like this when there is chaos and uncertainty to know what people are hearing. sometimes they hear things that turn out to not be the case so we must proceed with caution and so we must proceed with caution and so we get police confirmation. can you tell us what this part of london is normally like on a night? it is fairly vibrant, and normally busy. pubs and restaurants are busy. on
11:09 pm
london bridge you have an underground and overg round london bridge you have an underground and overground stations. and apparently at quarter past ten you would have had the pubs at the most fall. i have lived here for a few years. there are at least 15 pubs in this area, all in a concentrated area, within about 300 yards of each other for the you have restau ra nts yards of each other for the you have restaurants along high street as well. the latest thing that has happened is that a group of men who we re happened is that a group of men who were working on overnight engineering works have been evacuated as well, men dressed in orange hive is working overnight on the track improvement works. they have been released. they all had similar stories. of pandemonium. where are you right now. we're looking at pictures of the bridge.
11:10 pm
we can see many flashing blue lights and a heavy police presence with first responders and emergency service vehicles. a large group of people to be left are making their way quickly off the bridge. whereabouts are you and what can you see from where you are? whereabouts are you and what can you see from where you are ?|j whereabouts are you and what can you see from where you are? i am halfway down suffolk street, halfway between london bridge and black fire road. the cordon has been expanded by two blocks in the last 15 minutes. that has expanded. , expanded by 200 yards. at the moment there are still hundreds of people walking down the street away from the london bridge area. you can probably hear them. a strea m area. you can probably hear them. a stream of people who appear to have beenin stream of people who appear to have been in the area who have been
11:11 pm
either an lockdown or stuck somewhere. this appears to be the main conduit for people to get away from london bridge and heading west down the street towards blackfriars bridge road. there seems to be no end to the people who are coming down this road. itjust goes on and on and on. there were clearly many people stuck inside various premises around borough high street and london bridge. probably for the best pa rt london bridge. probably for the best part of the hour. also i have spoken to multiple witnesses who have said there were at least three people lying on the ground. i have also heard reports from two people but there were men dressed in black. yes. it is not clear picture at the moment. what we do know is that police and paramedics are in attendance and they are treating
11:12 pm
people who were injured in some way, as you say. we spoke to an eyewitness who saw the van driving toa group eyewitness who saw the van driving to a group of people chris, a number of people paying tribute again on twitter to the emergency services. a two minute response time. we are very fortu nate. two minute response time. we are very fortunate. i think that was quite extraordinary because a friend of mine who was working in a building ata of mine who was working in a building at a building adjacent to the shard. they text did me about 25 minutes past ten to say it had literally just happen. i minutes past ten to say it had literallyjust happen. i left my flat immediately and started walking towards the bridge. in that time, already, emergency vehicles were travelling down towards borough. the emergency services were under way in
11:13 pm
underfive emergency services were under way in under five minutes since whatever this is began. they were there within five minutes. at the same time this is when i was walking down and there were police cars heading towards borough. there were heading down southwark street. there were women in tears, women and men who had lost their friends were trying to call their friends and could not get through to them. clearly quite distraught. people who had been out on saturday night trying to enjoy myself. then i'd certainly has been transformed. obviously this had been a balmy summers evening in london and has now becomes a thing more horrific. they were running and they we re horrific. they were running and they were terrified and there were dozens of them. trying to get away from borough. at the moment, the nature of this incident and because of it,
11:14 pm
the nature of the injuries. we have some out on the line now, she was an eyewitness who lives across the road from london bridge station. thank you forjoining us. can you tell us wear when this incident began?” you forjoining us. can you tell us wear when this incident began? i am opposite the police station, not london bridge station. obviously we hear sirens but we were suddenly hearing far more than usual. or licking clearly say is that the response has been absolutely incredible. currently we are seeing armed police getting their gear on opposite us but at the height of
11:15 pm
things i could see 30 or a0 vehicles just down our road, about a mile or so just down our road, about a mile or so away from the bridge itself. you say you are used to hearing emergency service vehicles but the speed of the response has been commented on a number of times. did that strike you as well? absolutely. straightaway i knew something was going on because it was silent after siren and it was within 15 minutes that i should hear vehicles starting to respond. we are looking at live pictures of various emergency services vehicles, clearly police ca rs services vehicles, clearly police cars that are parked, blue lights flashing, shows you the london
11:16 pm
skyline. talking about the vehicles that are there. paramedics and ambulances are on the bridge as well. there is the shard... this is a busy part of town on a saturday night. very busy, samantha kerr? busy with lots of people now heading down our road that's obviously been evacuated —— samantha. my flatmates have returned home, they were evacuated from local supermarkets within i would say a mile radius of the incident. the responses massive and they aren't taking any chances. samantha, thank you very much, samantha, thank you very much, samantha, close to london bridge police station, she described 30 or a0 vehicles set out and a number of armed police. on the line is emily craig, also a bbc member of staff in a resta u ra nt craig, also a bbc member of staff in a restaurant nearby when the
11:17 pm
incident took place. emily, how did you first hear about this? hello. we first heard about it because staff in the restaurant, we were in the basement, on the ground floor staff started running down the stairs. pei told us they had been instructed to shut the doors and there was a kind of wave of panic in the basement of the restaurant. then people from the ground floor were moved downstairs to the basement. then we heard gunfire outside and some people saw armed police patrolling the area around the restaurant. some people eating elsewhere had actually been... taken refuge in the restau ra nt been... taken refuge in the restaurant as well and we were kept there for around 20 minutes before being told to leave the restaurant and escorted out by armed police, who told us to run east down towards elephant & castle and we are now outside the kind of secure zone, a
11:18 pm
massive police operation happening. go through that again, armed police came into the restaurant and they told you to run east is yellow armed police were outside the door escorting people outside the restau ra nt escorting people outside the restaurant and told us to run east to elephant & castle. they secured the area outside the restaurant, which is quite small, and on the edge of borough market, right by london bridge. then we were told to run london bridge. then we were told to ru n towards london bridge. then we were told to run towards elephant & castle as they tried to secure that stretch of road that leads up from elephant & castle towards london bridge. we're watching the metropolitan police twitter feed in the studio and they have just said that as well as london bridge, officers have also responded to an incident in borough market. " we have armed police at the scene" not just market. " we have armed police at the scene" notjust one incident but two that they are dealing with that they have confirmed on twitter.
11:19 pm
emily, how clear was it that this was gunfire you were hearing, it is often mistaken for something else. was gunfire you were hearing, it is often mistaken for something elselj can't claim to have ever heard gunfire in my life before but i was fairly sure that was it. it sounded like a very rapid fire. but by that stage it was as clear as it could be that it was police gunfire because there were so many blue lights and we could hear the sirens and the shouting. one man who came into the restau ra nt shouting. one man who came into the restaurant said today he had seen masked men, he came from another restau ra nt just masked men, he came from another restaurant just around the masked men, he came from another restaurantjust around the corner, but obviously i can't verify that. he said he had seen masked men. quite an atmosphere of panic in the restau ra nt quite an atmosphere of panic in the restaurant itself. the police seem to have cleared the area very effectively and the vicinity around
11:20 pm
borough market and london bridge. emily, thank you very much, emily craig, a bbc member of staff at a restau ra nt craig, a bbc member of staff at a restaurant nearby. the british transport police are saying that there are reports of a number of casualties as a result of an incident that possibly involved a vehicle and a knife in london bridge. we'vejust vehicle and a knife in london bridge. we've just reported that the metropolitan police are saying on their twitter feed that there are also dealing with an incident in borough market, they have armed police at the scene there as well —— they are. there are reports of a number of casualties as a result of an incident that possibly involved a vehicle and a knife. that is still not... it is not that an emphatic a qualification or corporation but that's what they're reporting. let's speak to nick quraishi, he is at
11:21 pm
london bridge. you havejust arrived. what is going on as far as you're aware? some dramatic scenes, mateen, in the past few seconds we hear what appears to have been a shock, i can't confirm that, but police behind me ushering people along this street. london bridge is a short distance behind me, you can see the flashing blue lights in the background. this story developing in the last hour. we know a van has hit a number of pedestrians on london bridge. you can see that there is perhaps some activity in the background, the cordon keeps getting moved further and further. we know a van has hit pedestrians on london bridge. reports a number of people have been stabbed too. i've been here ever since. police you can imagine... a lot of people enjoying their saturday nights, people have been ushered along southwark street where
11:22 pm
iam, it's ushered along southwark street where i am, it's hard to see what happened because we are a short distance away with the police take up behind me but so much activity going on at the moment. people are naturally concerned and police want to get them to safety. what is the noise we can hear in the background, it sounds like shouting, is that the public, is that the police? it is police. they are so keen to get eve ryo ne police. they are so keen to get everyone out what could be a danger area at the moment that they are trying to move people safely but you can understand people on a satellite, they've probably had a couple of drinks, probably a bit slow to bomb but police are treating this so seriously that to get people out of the area is their priority —— to respond. a number of gentlemen, they appear to be police, they want to get people out of the area. police are searching for three suspects, that has yet to be confirmed. things are developing by the second here and we are trying to
11:23 pm
keep tabs on what is happening. clearly some dramatic scenes on the height of a saturday night out for many people. it is. the other incident we understand at borough market, another place very popular ona market, another place very popular on a saturday night? indeed. that's obviously very close by. this is central london, people are here trying to enjoy themselves and this developing story has unfolded. let mejust say as developing story has unfolded. let me just say as well but obviously what's going on, london bridge station is shut, transport for london says london bridge has been closed in both directions due to this major police incident. it is quite hard to ascertain exactly what's going on. as soon as we got here police were moving the cordon. forgive me for turning around to see what's happening in the background, but so much activity at the moment, police trying to move people away to
11:24 pm
make this a safe area. we're obviously trying to get updates from the scene but while the police are moving people on and fairly soon the cordon could be extended and we might have to be moved. you will understand until someone comes out and says what is happening we are having to rely on witness accounts for the time being. we are, and people in situations like this, it is such a shock to them, they don't a lwa ys is such a shock to them, they don't always quite know what it is they've been watching. there's a police officer behind you to your right so i don't know if you are going to be moved on, you might want to have a quick look? possibly, i think moved on, you might want to have a quick look? possibly, ithink we're all right for the moment but the police officers you can see at the moment, they are breaching their collea g u es moment, they are breaching their colleagues and members of the public. people here, obviously ca a cordon, walking along the scene, seeing a cordon and not knowing what's going on —— seeing a cordon. people slow to take in what is
11:25 pm
happening but there's a sense of urgency from the police to get people out. as well as looking for these suspects. as you say, a suggestion from one police officer that they are looking for three men. at the moment it is difficult to piece together whether these incidents are related. you have two different locations. indeed. of course. at a time like this, somebody hears something that's happened, and then some people will inevitably link what's going on. perhaps there is some kind of connection but you can't be sure at a stage like this and you will remember what happened in the westminster bridge attack, callard massoud in march, information came out and it was slowly piecing together and being connected. just in front of me there is a police car with sirens blazing and rushing with awe.
11:26 pm
an car, a number of armed police armed car, a number of armed police are in the area tonight trying to ascertain what happened, possibly looking for these suspects and also other police officers are trying to get people to safety and make the area safe. i don't think we've had a look at it yet. can we have a look at them? pictures of a van on the bridge, this is on london bridge. this incident started with reports ofa this incident started with reports of a white van, a transit van of some sort, careering into five or six pedestrians and injuring them. they came to us a little while ago, we haven't shown them to you before. whether that is the van that not these pedestrians over, we don't know, there was an eyewitness that
11:27 pm
said the van veered off towards the shard. nick, tell us, is it settling down a bit, is everyone out of the way, are there more vehicles arriving? i've been here ten to 15 minutes and i can assure you, when we first arrived, there was intense activity on behalf of the police, they were shouting for people to get out of the way, clearly some evidence they have that something may be going on. there was a steady strea m may be going on. there was a steady stream of people then, as you can perhaps see behind me, the road is now fairly clear. this is a busy road in the centre of london, it is fairly quiet now 5 i would suggest £2.24..— 5. 22.4 ..-... .. ; ...- 5,4, .. ,.;.,-.r ........ £2.24..— 5. 22.4 .—,.,... a. ; ...,.,, 5,4, ,.. ,.,;,.,,..r ........ moses on £44..— 4.14.5 4,4... 4,4, 5 ..,,4,, 54 ,.. 444.5 ........ moses on out y-.. 4 be a danger of what could possibly be a danger zone. the police shouting, literally shouting at people to get out of the way. that seems to now have worked, there are a few people still around
11:28 pm
that have been out for a saturday night, so they are being told as well. but certainly most people are in the area. the blue lights you can see behind me. there are obviously several more i've bit further behind as we go towards london bridge but this cordon is in place —— a bit. so much activity... another police van going past. area i ‘ has ————-j-—— 444 4-44 5 44 444 5444 iii: you ————-j-—— 444 4l44 5 44 444 l44 £454 you have effectively been cleared. you have some journalists around me, effectively been cleared. you have somejournalists around me, people trying to find out as well what's going on. clearly the intense activity is much further behind me but we can't actually get to that because of the cordon is in place but we've certainly heard a lot of testimony from eyewitnesses at the scene “— testimony from eyewitnesses at the scene —— cordons. clearly showing a dramatic night. nick, for the moment, we will leave that with you and you can go and speak to some of
11:29 pm
the police officers and find out a bit more about what's happening in that particular incident. two incidents under way, the first at london bridge and police also saying that they have armed officers in attendance not far away at borough market. on the line now is a journalist who lives in the area. 5055-444 oulive, 47 salhangflflhefgdfiyw‘dfi‘fiwbifim do you live near, london location do you live near, london or borough market? i'm not bridge or borough market? i'm not farfrom london bridge, a couple of minutes, icame farfrom london bridge, a couple of minutes, i came out after i heard the news and i talked to one of the bus drivers on the bridge when he saw a couple of bodies lying on the ground and he wasn't sure if they we re ground and he wasn't sure if they were wounded or not and he thought it was a car accident, then he saw more bodies, he said several people we re more bodies, he said several people were on the ground and then he saw some armed officers coming to the scene. some armed officers coming to the scene. then he left the bus on the
11:30 pm
bridge and he was saying that he couldn't go back there. that was right after what had happened. at the time i was at london bridge §e§ 13; 5 355 e5 leeqee 3135; station iei 13; 5 355 e5 leeqee 3135; station but 1e§1efi§ 5 315 §1l1e31e 3135; station but police 1e§1efié 5 315 §1leeqee 3135; station but police asked us to ‘ people we ‘ a lot ‘ people we ‘a lot of other people here, we saw a lot of ambulances going to london bridge andi ambulances going to london bridge and i saw other police officers and the security services going towards london bridge. the police cars are still coming here. are you outside? yes. i- can the the police asked are you outside? yes. i- can the - the police asked us see the station. the police asked us to go back a little bit from the station. now we can hear more police ca rs station. now we can hear more police cars and ambulances coming. where we re cars and ambulances coming. where were you cars and ambulances coming. where were you when you first heard that
11:31 pm
there was an incident unfolding?” was near tower bridge, about three orfour minutes from was near tower bridge, about three or four minutes from london was near tower bridge, about three orfour minutes from london bridge. i saw many people evacuating from london bridge. people were telling mei london bridge. people were telling me i could not go that way but then i went to the station where the me the police cut me off from the station. i walked back with all the people from london bridge. this part of log busy on sv-v: ii people been quite by how quickly they impressed by how quickly they responded. the area is busy. and there is a lot of traffic on london bridge. the driver was telling me that when he saw people on the ground he saw police already on the
11:32 pm
bridge and he called the police as well but the police said they were ready knew about it, an incident that had happened. i asked an officer of what happened and they said they cannot give any details, they are dealing with it. it looks like they dealt with it quickly according to eyewitnesses. we also heard from eyewitnesses that they we re heard from eyewitnesses that they were in pubs and restaurants, there are many in that part of london, quite busy on sunday night but they we re quite busy on sunday night but they were effectively in lockdown. when they came out, many people were coming towards tower bridge from london bridge, walking towards tower bridge. now it is a little quieter because at first they closed it from london bridge station and then they push people back and now they pushed it back even further to an area
11:33 pm
between london bridge and tower bridge. it is quieter now that i do not know if there are any other people there. there were people coming out from a club across the bridge but it looks like after what happened they asked people to leave the area rather than asking them to stay inside. thank you for talking to us in describing what you have been able to see. that was a journalist who lives close to london bridge. nowjulie was inside the building. yes, we have a view over the whole incident. it is far quieter, and we can tell you are indoors. you may have had quite of the view of the city around you. we
11:34 pm
have binoculars so we can see quite a lot of what is going on. when we first aware of something unfolding? the first incident on londong first aware of something unfolding? the 20 t incident on ltsz‘ttg first aware of something unfolding? the 20 t incident on its second 9 and qa'mifiutésaflo: the q 15 and qa'mifiuteeaflo: the q 15 minutes ago in borough incident, 15 minutes ago in borough market, not far away. we could see on the bridge we first noticed some groups of people, people on the ground who had been injured. we first thought it may have been a traffic accident. then we saw the police arrived quickly and shortly after that the ambulances. and the muscle groups of cars arriving around borough, and we had been watching that. there are meny=
11:35 pm
around borough, and we had been watching that. there are men}? people watching that. there are many people from the area at the being evacuated from the area at the moment stop the mayor of london a little while ago was urging people to not call the police unless they had an absolute emergency. also suggesting that people should avoid the area. they will not have a choice now because of the cordon. we can see the bridge at the moment, a police officer in the centre of the bridge and blue flashing lights. you must be able to see a lot of emergency vehicles, julie. some buildings are blocking a view of the north and south side that we can see a lot of police cars around the borwick and southwark area. this seemed to be a lot of people around and ambulances picking up people. we
11:36 pm
arejust and ambulances picking up people. we are just hearing from reuters that the reason may has said in contact with officials because of this incident. we also understand that donald trump .; being donald trump is being briefed to julie, according to downing street. julie, how much information did you get and how much information didyouget end~— ‘fiesl'f what lve’ was going 17 1 of’ was going on "1" ' ' ' 1 " shard. we knew what was going on before anybody else and turned on the television to see if there were reports. all we knew was what we could see, ambulances and police arriving. we heard a lot of gunshots not after the incident on the bridge and police scattered around the south of caven. what advice are you
11:37 pm
getting now from the hotel? we have heard nothing. we were wondering if we should check but i think we are far enough away and in a safe position, outside the cordon.” don't suppose you would feel inclined to go out. thank you very much for talking to us. that is julie evans, one of many eyewitnesses we have spoken to in the last hour or so since we began reporting this incident. reuters news agency reporting that police are searching for three suspects who may be armed, who may be involved in the incident on london bridge. not just one incident being dealt with at the moment but also borough market has an armed police presence,

11:40 pm
multi—storey buildings, quite an iconic building in the centre of london. it seemed that the driver had not stopped. that picture of a white van on london bridge may tell a different story. in the last 25 minutes or so, around quarter past 11 local time another incident was reported in our market, on the south bank of london. aid busy and popular place with many restaurants and pubs are having a good time. these are the pictures, the live pictures we have of london bridge. blue lights are flashing for the emergency service vehicles. let's speak again to our correspondent nick who has made his wayjust outside the shots rang out, just in the ago some shots rang out, just in the background not too far away from me.
11:41 pm
this is quite a busy area on a saturday night so police were keen to make the area safe and to get people away. we understand that police have been looking for freeman following what happened on the bridge. the bridge is a short distance behind, we cannot get onto the bridge because of the cordon. things are calm around me as you can see at the moment. that is com pletely see at the moment. that is completely different to what was happening a few minutes ago when the police were literally shouting at people to get out of the way. people we re people to get out of the way. people were enjoying their saturday night, perhaps not fully conserve —— co nversa nt perhaps not fully conserve —— conversant with what was happening. this is a serious incident and there are at least two things happening. van has pedestrians on london bridge. we think two or three people
11:42 pm
