the very much, nick. let's return to the metropolitan police and what they are saying. they have been making it quite clear that they do not want anybody to speculate about what is going on. they wish to be clear before they report anything. they said one hour ago they were dealing with an incident on london bridge and they would give more information when available. in the last few minutes... sorry, halfan when available. in the last few minutes... sorry, half an hour ago, officers reported to reports of stabbings in borough market. armed police officers had responded and shots were fired. two incidents that they are reporting. information available is that at eight minutes past ten officers responded to a report of a vehicle collision with pedestrians on london bridge. officers also seem to be responding to an incident in the vauxhall area.
11:46 pm
police will be busy on a saturday night and it will be too easy to connect incidents that are not connected. mark lobel, a colleague of mine, a bbc reporter, he is at borough market. what can you see and where are you? i'm on borough high street, between borough station and london bridge, north of borough tube station and in the last ten minutes police vans have been arriving here, ten police officers got out of the first one and put on helmets and took out shields, a second lot came around five minutes later. i asked if they were armed and they said they had taser is. there's clearly an ongoing police incident in this area closer to london bridge —— tasers. the central aim of the police is to keep the roads clear, to keep all pedestrians and cars off the roads, they are pushing... they are doing it again now. police
11:47 pm
officers are now running further up this road carrying shields and there's clearly an ongoing incident in front of us. one eyewitness i spoke to around 15 minutes ago said that he saw police officers shooting ata that he saw police officers shooting at a tapas restaurant called vindissi near borough and he was playing the audio from his mobile phone of that incident. we are 200 and is north of borough station. there are police officers with their shields and helmets shouting for us to get back and pushing us back very fast to borough underground station. this is a more aggressive push than we have seen. this is more aggressive than we have seen before. mark, we need to let you go and we
11:48 pm
will speak to you again when you are somewhere safe, mark lobel, a reporter at borough market were a second incident is still active it would seem. we have heard from scotla nd would seem. we have heard from scotland yard, the headquarters of the met in london, police are responding to an incident in vauxhall, which is also in south london. there you have it, officers now responding. information at this stage, three incidents police and the emergency services, the first responders, are involved with, the first at london bridge, the second at borough market, and then in vauxhall. i want to bring you some information that my colleague frank gardner has sent to ask, he is our security correspondent of course, he said regarding the london bridge incident, whitehall officials say the police are leading on this incident, not the intelligence
11:49 pm
agencies —— to us. he says it appears to have taken the authorities by surprise, that means there was no intelligence warning or surveillance indicating anything of this nature was about to happen. again, we'll be very careful before wejump to any again, we'll be very careful before we jump to any conclusions about the nature of these incidents, which began with the van driving across london bridge. let'sjust pause for a moment, there's a lot to take in. i'm joined a moment, there's a lot to take in. i'mjoined in a moment, there's a lot to take in. i'm joined in the studio by greg dawson, who is one of our reporters who has been following this story for the last hour and a half with me. greg, let's start from the beginning, we're looking at london bridge, this is the first incident police and emergency services were called to, it's all been cordoned off, blue flashing lights. the reform, first report we got were around 10:30pm on a saturday night ina around 10:30pm on a saturday night in a packed area of london just by london bridge station. we heard
11:50 pm
reports of a white van mounting the pavement and hitting pedestrians, an eyewitness report saying at least five or six people were struck by the van. a little while after we then got reports of incidents at borough market, which is filled with pubs at that time on a saturday night, which would have been very busy, many restaurants and police have since confirmed they were also attending an incident there. what's important to stress is borough market is very close to london bridge, you can walk within 30 seconds and be at borough market, so very close incidents. in the last ten minutes or so the metropolitan police have also confirmed they are responding to an incident in the vauxhall area. what's slightly different is vauxhall is a little further away, still on the south bank of the thames, but a mile west of that area, and in the last few minutes the metropolitan police have tweeted out this message grouping
11:51 pm
vauxhall, london bridge and borough market together, giving people advice, a note of caution telling people to run to a place of safety, hyde, turn off your phone, turn it to vibrate, barricade yourself in and tell the police by calling 999 if it is safe to do so. this would indicate from their perspective that this is still an ongoing incident. it does appear the police are the ones leading on it as our police, security correspondent frank gardner has said that police officers are leading, that could be serious later. we've heard from a reporter who happened to be on the bridge at the time that there were multiple different types of police, armed police, regular police, helicopters and boats on the thames. lots of people commenting police were on the scene within two minutes. we know of
11:52 pm
at least ten vehicles that arrived within minutes. whether those police boats that were there reported were to deal with a specific incident in the river, we don't know, with the westminster attack in march, someone was pushed into the river. it could be police procedure that they would have deployed those boats as a precaution, we don't know yet, but police helicopters on site and boats as well as those on the ground. we arejust as well as those on the ground. we are just hearing that police at the london bridge incident have confirmed that there is more than one fatality. we had heard from eyewitnesses that five or six people appear to have been knocked over by this van that drove across the bridge, several of them seem to be ina very bridge, several of them seem to be in a very serious condition. police at that incident now telling us that there is more than one fatality. it
11:53 pm
appears that while things are quiet on this section of london bridge, very close by in borough market on the south side of the river, and also in vauxhall, those two incidents appear to be developing. whether there are all connected, it's still not clear. just a statement from scotland yard in the last few moments coming from the press association, saying police have responded to reports of stabbings in borough market, armed officers responded and shots have been fired, this corroborates what we have been hearing from people at the scene who have heard gunshots. we had a bbc reporter, chris when pressed, he said he saw someone with a knife, so that would corroborate there have been stabbings in the area. “— there have been stabbings in the area. —— wimpress. police have said they have responded to stabbings in borough market, just a two—minute walk from london bridge. that's where we spoke to our reporter mark
11:54 pm
lobel in borough market, he had to move because he was having to run from that scene. we can now speak to mark again, he is safe. mark, where did you have to work to? that was to clear borough high—street, we were able to stay and watch more officers are rising but this time they were more serious and everyone has cleared —— arriving —— walk. all the ca i’s cleared —— arriving —— walk. all the cars that had been waiting at the traffic lights for the last half an hour have been told to turn around. police are increasing the area of the cordon around this incident. we are not looking at pictures of where you are, we are looking at pictures of london bridge, which is where the first incident started. when we spoke to you before you said police arrived into groups armed in various ways 7 arrived into groups armed in various ways? that's right, the first group that got out had helmets and shields
11:55 pm
and the second group changed clothing, i asked what they were doing, whether they were armed guards, and others told me they had tasers and those were all we saw going towards it. but there were a dozen or so police vans and ambulances, constantly different va ns ambulances, constantly different vans coming and going, both coming to and from the scene. clearly it's an ongoing and developing police operation here. let mejust an ongoing and developing police operation here. let me just bring in something that has just dropped on the wires, whitehall officials again saying that police are leading this incident, not intelligence agencies, it appears to have taken the authorities by surprise but there was no intelligence warning or surveillance indicating it was about to happen, that is frank gardner confirming that to us. the speed at which this has moved from one location to the other and the speed at which the police has responded has taken a lot of people by
11:56 pm
surprise and they've been very complimentary about them? mark, can you hear us? hello? i think you lost us you hear us? hello? i think you lost us for a second. the speed at which this as change locations, people have commented on that, and the speed at which police were able to respond? that's right, i was coming along the north side of the river until i took the turn of the vauxhall bridge to get here. probably ten minutes after the initial incident you saw police cars, police vans flying in in order to get to this destination that i am in at the moment, boro underground station, next to burrow underground station. i don't know about the other incident but certainly with this incident there was one eyewitness we spoke to that seemed to suggest armed police had been shooting at a tapas restaurant, there was some incident there, he said it was called vindissi and
11:57 pm
other than that we saw more police officers arriving in borough high—street and now they can say they cleared all the cars in the vicinity of the junction that turned into borough high—street, so it created a lot of space around what has taken place on borough high—street. has taken place on borough high-street. what about the other emergency vehicles, ambulances on london bridge, is it the same at borough market? there are large police vans here. i have seen one ambulance go onto the street. we passed the junction about 20 minutes ago but mainly we are seeing police estate ca rs ago but mainly we are seeing police estate cars and police vans. mark, how many people are still out on the streets ? how many people are still out on the streets? you are there because you're a reporter and you want to see what's going on but how many others have stayed around? from what ican others have stayed around? from what i can see you have just under a dozen people looking on here, police have managed to get most people to
11:58 pm
90, have managed to get most people to go, there are a couple of black cabs and two or three other cars waiting to probably see what's happening and what's unfolding here but you've got the vast majority of the cars here turned around. it was chock—a—block when all the cars were piled up and people wanted to get home, get onto the next road available, they have been cleared, police have definitely managed to move them. how clear is it from what you been able to learn, and you may not have been able to speak to many involved in the investigation, but the connection between the incidents we have heard about not just in between the incidents we have heard about notjust in london bridge and where you are in borough market but also on the south side of london in vauxhall? to be honest i'm not aware of any connection from anyone i've spoken to between those incidents. we have been told by police that there has been more than one fatality in the incident on london bridge. we don't know the nature of
11:59 pm
that fatality, we were reporting that fatality, we were reporting that there was the van, this is how this began, this white van around 10:15 p.m., it swerved off the road and hit a number of pedestrians. the advice from the metropolitan police is to get out of the way. clearly thatis is to get out of the way. clearly that is what... yes, they are putting up police tape now further and further down the road, they clearly don't want anyone to come anywhere near borough high street this evening, they don't want any ca i’s this evening, they don't want any cars 01’ any this evening, they don't want any cars or any pedestrians to come anywhere near. indeed. sadiq khan, the mayor of london, some time ago saying everyone should avoid london bridge, the same now goes for borough market, borough high street, which is where mark lobel has been talking to us from, our reporter.
12:00 am
the clarity at the moment about what is going on in vauxhall, those details still coming in, we'll bring you them as soon as we have them. you're watching bbc news. this is bbc news broadcasting across bbc world and bbc one. we are reporting on an unfolding story which began at around quarter past ten local time. nearly two hours ago, when police received a call to london bridge, one of the bridges across the river thames in the heart of london. please move towards safety. safety is that way. you can see here police directing the people out and about on a saturday night in london. these are popular parts of the city. london bridge, borough high street with lots of
