us us from, our reporter. talking to us from, our reporter. the clarity at the moment about what is going on in vauxhall, those details still coming in, we'll bring you them as soon as we have them. you're watching bbc news. this is bbc news broadcasting across bbc world and bbc one. we are reporting on an unfolding story which began at around quarter past ten local time. nearly two hours ago, when police received a call to london bridge, one of the bridges gci’oss london bridge, one of the bridges across the river thames in the heart of london. please move towards safety. safety is that way. you can see here police directing the people out and about on a saturday night in london. these are popular parts of the city. london bridge, borough high street with lots of restaurants
12:01 am
and pubs that attract people on a pleasa nt and pubs that attract people on a pleasant and balmy summer evening. these are live pictures from london bridge. this was in the studio, a story that has developed into three locations. let's go back now to the first incident that happened. we heard just before 1030 that a white van had mounted the pavement on london but the bridge on the south bank and several pedestrians were it. we were told that police were on the scene and that the police helicopters and boats on the river thames. that was according to witnesses at the scene who said they saw at least five or six people struck by the van. afterwards we got
12:02 am
reports of a disturbance at borough nightclub, borough market, a popular and packed location on a saturday evening. the reports were of men carrying knives police have confirmed that there were several stabbings in that area and they have responded with gunfire. around 20 minutes ago, the metropolitan police fourth confirmed they were attending an incident will further we, further west in vauxhall. not much more information about what that incident is but tellingly the metropolitan police on the social media issued security advice which is the usual drill that they would do in these situations but not something they would have had to do before which suggest that the incidence is ongoing. they have told people to run, hyde, tell if you are caught in an attack. according to them, this
12:03 am
incident is ongoing. we have heard from downing street which says the prime minister is in contact with officials and is being regularly updated. thank you very much. as is often the way in an incident like this, facebook has activated there i am safe facility so if you have family that you are worried about it isa family that you are worried about it is a good idea to post that you are safe and then family and friends can check and have peace of mind. we have been told by police that there is more than one fatality. they have not specified how many. that came to us not specified how many. that came to us from london police, police at london bridge. i believe we can speak to a bbc producer, a colleague who works here in the newsroom with us. who works here in the newsroom with
12:04 am
us. where are you? i am at the south side of london bridge which is quite close to borough market, the south side of london bridge where one of the incidents appeared to have happened. i spoke to several people who have come across the bridge saying they were evacuated from buildings that they were at work in there. they heard about the incident, they may not have seen but they are aware that an incident happened on the bridge and they have been asked to leave their building and come away. we are right the cordon on the south side of the bridge. we have not been moved back, police have said it is an ongoing incident happening. i have also heard here although it is yet to be confirmed officially that there have been two incidents, one at london bridge, one at borough market. we
12:05 am
don't know if those incidents are ongoing but clearly there is a concern is the safety and here on the ground we are close to what happened. let mejust the ground we are close to what happened. let me just explained. the ground we are close to what happened. let mejust explained. it is often easierfor us happened. let mejust explained. it is often easier for us to find out exactly what is going on here in the studio, strangely, because we have access to social media and newswi res. access to social media and newswires. there is a third incident at vauxhall which we do not know much about. the metropolitan police are saying to remain calm, alert and vigilant. they are using all necessary skills and resources at three incidents, london bridge, borough market and vauxhall. how quickly have police moved people away? it seemed, particularly at london bridge, that many people were being escorted out of the way. i have been here for a little while 110w. have been here for a little while
12:06 am
now. people have told me that they saw incident well over one hour ago and they were escorted away from the bridge. but we have been moved further and further south from the bridge itself and it looks like they we re bridge itself and it looks like they were concerned about people being too near the initial area where the incident was reported. we have seen armoured vehicles, police riot vehicles we have police who are slightly more equipment than just your normal and regular patrol police. apart from that we have been stopped on the south side of the bridge and told to remain in this area. were there any local buildings nearby in lockdown? we heard that
12:07 am
some restaurants and pubs had people kept indoors for sometime to keep them safe and make sure they were out of the way. some people i have spoken to who were in some of the buildings in the area were escorted by police and to come out after a certain period of time to be escorted from the area. they were asked to come away from the bridge area. they were taken away from any of the nearby buildings but were then taken away. it is not confirmed how many people may be remaining but thomas certainly, some have been evacuated and away from the point. for the moment, thank you very much. that was a colleague of ours at london bridge. number 10 downing st are saying that the prime minister
12:08 am
is in contact with officials and is being regularly updated on the incident at london bridge. since that dropped on the newswire they will have added to that the incident happening in borough market and, also in vauxhall. we understand that the prime minister is now on her way to downing street. we are in the middle of the general election campaign here in britain so there may indeed be some impact on the campaign asa may indeed be some impact on the campaign as a result of these incidents that are currently being dealt with in the heart of london. our correspondence is at london bridge, the first incident where these events began to unfold. getting on for two hours ago now and you have been there for one hour now? almost that. obviously when these things unfold sent to the scene and once you are here you
12:09 am
these things unfold sent to the scene and once you are here you see a lot of activity and you try to find out what is going on. you can hear, perhaps, helicopter ‘s overhead. a number of police cars in the area. around where i am at the moment this is, steadily speaking, a cordon. a police car and flashing blue lights are behind me and that this is nothing compared to what was happening an hour ago. as soon as i arrived the police activity was intense. a number of police officers we re intense. a number of police officers were ushering saturday night crowds out of the way saying run, get out of the way and be quick. you can understand that on a saturday night it is perhaps harderfor understand that on a saturday night it is perhaps harder for people who have been enjoying their weekend to understand what is going on so police were insistent, even shouting to say get out of the way, something may be going on. that is london bridgejust behind me. we can not get to the scene because of the cordon. as we have been reporting now it seems that there is more than
12:10 am
one incident. again, nobody is saying whether they are connected but because of the proximity of where i am and what is happening it is clear that there could be a link. we know that a van has got on to london bridge and injured a number of pedestrians, five, perhaps six. we understand that up to three suspects have gotten out of the van and started stabbing a number of people in the area. that is one incident. a second incident... it is important to say they are not yet connected but it is on the south side of london bridge at borough market where something else seems to have happened and now we are reporting something else potentially is occurring in the vauxhall area. clearly things are being taken seriously. the first reports came through a couple of hours ago now
12:11 am
and have been... this is, you know, and have been... this is, you know, a busy area of london on a saturday night people have been enjoying their night out and a suddenly confronted by armed in the area saying something major is going on. nobody has been able to earn exactly. our reports are coming from eyewitnesses. let's have a look around here. there are a number of people and you can see a number of people and you can see a number of people perhaps in the background. let me get out of the way and you can see a number of people in hands above their head walking down the street beside me. this southwark street which would normally be quite busy on saturday night stop police again trying to tell people what is going on. work out is going on that you can see a stream going on. work out is going on that you can see a stream of people they
12:12 am
are, obviously, coming out of the area. it looks like they have been out on a saturday night and being told that something major has happened. maybe they were caught up in something. it is difficult to 1's hand at the moment clearly they are coming out there with their hands above their shoulders. that is the biggest stream of people we have seen biggest stream of people we have seen for some half hour. there we go. something they are is occurring. something happens every few minutes. sometimes you come to me after things have calmed down, sometimes there is intense activity. let us have a look. a steady stream of people that this is the end of the cordon, i should say, so people in the area and coming to safety. forgive me, we are trying to report
12:13 am
on what is going on and look around as well and see and rip or on things as well and see and rip or on things as well and see and rip or on things as we see it. clearly not quite sure what is occurring but it looks like extra people who have possibly been ina extra people who have possibly been in a nightclub or a club on a saturday night. there is intense activity here. it is just after midnight uk time so people are coming to the end, maybe, of their night out and finding out what is happening. every few minutes things are happening. it is difficult to stay abreast so many current incident. it is difficult to say what is going on. recruiting from you and the eyewitnesses close to the scene. they give us an update of what is happening first with the events what is happening first with the eve nts o n what is happening first with the events on london bridge. and now...
12:14 am
you can see here events on london bridge. and now... you can see here we are events on london bridge. and now... you can see here we are being moved from the area will behind the traffic lights! behind the traffic lights! , nick. is being moved on as that cordon moves an ever wider across and away from the incident on london bridge. you can see how busy it is even two hours after the incident with people being need to move to safety. we saw some chefs come out in their whites from a restau ra nt, come out in their whites from a restaurant, pub or hotel. it shows the busyness of central london on a saturday night. people coming down the streets with their hands above their head to show they are no threat. other people say the same thing happens to them on social media, that they were deeply faced by armed police officers and told to
12:15 am
get out of the way and get to safety. a great deal of activity on social media, some of it not particularly help of a great deal of speculation which we will not engage in. and people, as we often see in cities on these appalling occasions, the good side of human beings comes out as well where people offer each other century. i have spotted that one of them. a former metropolitan police officer now sits in the house of lords. he, like many people, is offering people somewhere safe to sit this out if they need it, just to get in touch. vauxhall station reopened a few minutes ago, this is the twitter feed from transport for london. we don't know very much about what's been going on in vauxhall, that is the least reported of the three incidents at the moment. we will no
12:16 am
doubt peel away some of that in a little while. just worth repeating that our security correspondent frank gardner posted a while ago that whitehall officials say it is very much the police leading on this incident, not the intelligence agencies. authorities were taken by surprise, no intelligence warning or surveillance indicating this was about to happen. my colleague greg dawson is the reporter sitting here patiently with me in the studio trying to piece together steadily what's been happening over the last couple of hours. what have you been watching on the wires, greg? what's probably the most significant development in the last 20 minutes is the reopening of vauxhall station, which is a little way away from the incident at london bridge and the incident at borough market. clearly if police and transport for london had concerns about the
12:17 am
station early in the evening, they are now sufficiently confident it is fine to reopen the station. it's on the victoria line, it runs 2a hours on the weekend, many people will be wanting to get home. it relates to the metropolitan police saying they are attending an incident in vauxhall and connecting it to both what was happening in borough and london bridge. for now it appears at least the public transport in that area is back open again. it seems the focus on most of the activity as far as we the focus on most of the activity as faras we can the focus on most of the activity as far as we can tell is very much in borough market, where we were hearing from our colleague mark lobel hearing from our colleague mark lobel, but also this massive police presence and the ever widening cordon on london bridge. we saw a few moments ago a street stream of people walking past a police cordon with their hands on ahead, a dramatic image, and we earlier had
12:18 am
reports of people being kept inside pubs and restaurants, reports of people being kept inside pu bs a nd restau ra nts, clearly reports of people being kept inside pubs and restaurants, clearly police locking down the area. those images seem locking down the area. those images seem to indicate that some of those pubs, some of those restaurants potentially letting people out and out of the police cordon. you can see police still keen to move people back. there's been a statement from number 10 downing st saying the prime minister theresa may is in constant contact with the authorities about what's happening, we understand she is on her way to downing street where she will keep across the situation. a witness from the london bridge incident telling police agencies that he saw a van veering into people on the bridge and he saw people being knocked over. we must also report and remind you that police confirmed some time ago that there has been more than one fatality as a result of that
12:19 am
incident on london bridge. that may not be the final figure of casualties. we know that from eyewitnesses who we spoke to about two hours ago that there were several people who looked to have been very seriously injured. i think we're going to show you some pictures of what's been happening in one of the hundreds of bars in london. this is police coming in and getting people to safety, getting them to get down under the tables. let's just have a listen. our apologies for any offensive
12:20 am
language that you may have heard there. you can see it was the police really in a great hurry to get people to get down. our apologies for the language that you heard in what must have been a very fraught moment, not the kind of thing we would ordinarily broadcast to you of course. we're very careful about that sort of thing. obviously it was mobile phone footage that we had in. we'll make sure we check that again before we use it. but it showed you, didn't it, that the police were in a variety of different places trying to keep everybody safe. greg dawson has been keeping an eye on social media, that's one of the things the metropolitan police tweeted a short time ago, the advice to people. metropolitan police tweeted a short time ago, the advice to peoplem was like their drill for this kind
12:21 am
of situation kicked in, they were telling people three things, run, hyde, tell. all of that indicating this was an active situation. this tweet they issued came after the incident that was reported in vauxhall. we now know that vauxhall tube station has reopened. we haven't had any update from the metropolitan police other than to say they will only give us new information when they can verify it is true, clearly they want to avoid any confusion amidst all the panic happening on the streets of london. greg, for the moment, thank you very much. the prime minister theresa may is to chaira much. the prime minister theresa may is to chair a security meeting on sunday morning. we havejust received that from 10 downing street. we can speak to nick quraishi, our correspondent we were speaking to a few moments ago, who was moved. where are you now, nick has yellow just moved
12:22 am
was moved. where are you now, nick has yellowjust moved a short distance away. if you've been with me for the last hour or so, i've been speaking from just inside the cordon but that gordon has moved, it was near london bridge and as soon as we got here it moved further back and it's been moved again as police, and it's been moved again as police, and shout at people —— cordon. saying move, there could be danger, or they have to move for operational reasons. and incident unfolded on london bridge a couple of hours ago. a number of people were hit with a white van. three people got out, some stabbings were reported, then
12:23 am
another incident unfolded on the of london bridge, and then another potential incident in three areas in a dramatic few hours. we know there's been more than one fatality on london bridge, we don't know how many but that's what police have been telling us. clearly everyone is taking this very seriously, theresa may is to chair and of emergency meeting in the morning. since i've been here, things for the time being have calmed down. —— an emergency. but i said that ten minutes ago and then police moved the cordon and moved the reporters on, so things can change every 30 seconds to a minute. there's flashing blue lights behind me, we are a distance away from london bridge were the first incident occurred, the police
12:24 am
investigation is going on. again, you will see some activity with police there. let me just sit on these pictures at the momentjust to see what's going on. the police car, the patrol car has just gone past and it is closing the road offjust in front of me. expect the cordon to be moved on. that's exactly what i'm saying, it seems quiet for the time being, then something happens and people look around and they see what's going on. the level of anxiety here tonight is high, mateen. for the moment, nick, thank you very much. find out where the
12:25 am
best place is for you to be. as nick says, this is borne out by frank gardner, our security correspondent, who has said on twitter that the metropolitan police have reissued the run, hide, tell advice for people caught up in london tonight, the situation is still not under control they say. i can't tell you anything at the moment but i just i can't tell you anything at the moment but ijust need you to move... one of the many locations in which the cordon was for ever being moved out and away from that first incident on london bridge. frank gardner also saying the met police are saying more than one person has died in the attack on london bridge, there have been stabbings at borough market and an incident at vauxhall but we now know the tube station in vauxhall has been reopened. frank saying this appears to be cordon rated. let's speak to peter young, a journalist with the times —— co—ordinated. your office not far
12:26 am
away at all from london bridge?” wasn't there at the time, when i first heard the reports i was down towards camberwell where i saw a lot of ambulances lined up, very close to the nearby king's college hospital. i made my way north when i heard the reports and from there on i went heard the reports and from there on iwent up heard the reports and from there on i went up are high street and this is where the cordon is started to be put in place. from their i spoke to a lot of people who had said they heard gunshots. —— cordon is. the sirens are going past me now. i heard several fire engines, four fire engines, heading up and many police cars. people on the street said they heard gunfire, machine—guns, others said they had seen machine—guns, others said they had seen the van that had reportedly crashed by the station. later on
12:27 am
there was an here pause where nothing was going on and every minute or two police were heading upwards —— eerie. then at one point police were moving very quickly along and they had one man in the middle of the huddle. they continued down for around 100 and is and then they put him on the floor and they searched him, at which point i was told to get back. —— metres. then i got back to a safe area. how did you find out what the movements of the police were connected to? what do you mean exactly? you weren't close by but you saw a lot of activity? at the end i got within around 200 metres of the stationary itself. so it was very close to the scene. by
12:28 am
that point i was surprised really by how it was, there were a lot of bysta nders how it was, there were a lot of bystanders at that point walking around. quitea bystanders at that point walking around. quite a few people had been evacuated from their homes and they we re evacuated from their homes and they were told to find somewhere to go or stay for the night. as i speak to you there are another two fire engines going past now. i'm afraid i'm probably going to have to go at this point. peter young, keep safe, thanks very much, journalist from the times. let's speak to tom symonds, our home affairs correspondent on southwark street. tom, this cordon from london bridge getting ever wider? we are at southwark street, as you said, which i would say is about a third of a mile from borough market and the southern end of london bridge, both the railway station and the bridge itself. that's where. .. the railway station and the bridge itself. that's where... we are
12:29 am
constructing this so bear with us, we are constructing this from eyewitnesses we have spoken to in the last half an hour, maybe an hour, many of whom deeply shocked, i spoke to one man i will tell you about ina spoke to one man i will tell you about in a second who was deeply shocked by what he saw, and eyewitnesses sometimes think they have seen something they haven't or haven't given a clear description, so haven't given a clear description, so that's the health warning but what the eyewitnesses seem to be saying, and i will someday it up like this, a van ran over people on london bridge —— sum it up. three men came out of the van. they headed towards the borough market area. for people that don't know london, a food market popular with tourists, lots of different stalls and bars that have grown up over the years around that market. one eyewitness i spoke to date a clear description of what he saw, he is interesting because he is a security guard who manages a number of different pubs
12:30 am
and bars in that borough market area —— today. he said he had a call from a colleague at another bar saying people had been stabbed in that bar, a bar in the borough market. he went over to see what was going on. he describes people running away and screaming, he carried on thinking there was a fight going on or something and he said he saw three men, one with a red and black top, and he gave me another description, this will be slightly alarming but don't be alarmed, this is what he said, it doesn't mean it is anything in particular, but he said he saw a man who had canisters kept to his abdomen. that's one eyewitness, he may be in shock, he may not know what he was looking at but that is what he was looking at but that is what he was looking at but that is what he said to me —— taped. he said this man had a long night and he was attacking people. he saw one woman in her early 20s stabbed and she went to the ground. he said he then went to the ground. he said he then went back to his bar to try to work out what to do
