'this what are your thoughts on how this country moves what are your thoughts on how this cou ntry moves forward 7 what are your thoughts on how this country moves forward ?|i what are your thoughts on how this country moves forward? i am thinking about london at the moment. this is about london at the moment. this is a city that is no stranger to terrorism, sadly. it has always proved it is resilient. it thrives on its liberal values, its tolerance and diversity. looking around us now, there are so many different cultures and ethnicities. people from all over the world. for the most pa rt from all over the world. for the most part they get on well. in international terms, london, for its size, is one of the most peaceful and safe cities you can find anywhere on the planet. i was here last night and talked to many people who had been caught up in the attacks. i think that, despite all the horror, despite the pain, the grief, i don't thing that london will ever allow itself to be terrorised. many thanks.
6:46 pm
i should say there will be continuing coverage on the bbc news channel. huw edwards will be here with the ten o'clock news. you are watching special coverage on bbc news of last night's terror attacks in central london. we are at the police cordon and borough high street, close to borough market and london bridge, where the attacks unfolded last night, leaving seven people dead and 48 injured. we are hearing from the various hospitals where those injured are being taken. —— have been taken. 21 of them are in what is described as critical care. the police have been giving more details about their operations last night to upper hand and shoot dead the three terror suspects who carried out the attack —— to apprehend. the metropolitan police say eight officers were involved in that operation, firing some 50 bullets. the three men were wearing
6:47 pm
what appeared to be suicide vests, which turned out to be hoax fests. but the police officers trying to wrap the hem them did not know that. their bravery has been hailed —— trying to apprehend them. so far, police have made 12 arrests in east london. mark rowley, head of national terror policy at the metropolitan police, has been describing the operation so far. the investigation is progressing at a pace, and officers from the met's counterterrorism command and the national counterterrorism network are working with partners to piece together exactly what happened last night. we have already made good progress, but there remains much more to do. we are now making significant progress in identifying the three attackers, and confirming the fact that there were no other suspects at the scene when the attack was carried out. work is ongoing to understand more about them, about their connections, and about whether they were assisted or supported by anyone else. as i think you are aware, there are searches ongoing in east london, and 12 arrests have already been made. there is clearly more to do, and we will work relentlessly
6:48 pm
to get to the facts. we have established that the van used during the attack was a white renault van that was recently hired by one of the attackers. as our understanding grows, we now understand that the van at london bridge started the attack at 21:58 hours yesterday as it went north to south on the river, with members of the puplic calling police minutes later. the van mounted the pavement and collided with pedestrians before being abandoned where attackers were armed with knives, continued into the borough market area, stabbing numerous people. the attackers were then confronted by the firearms officers, and i can confirm that eight police firearms officers discharged their weapons. whilst this will be subject to an investigation by the ipcc, our initial assessment is in the region of 50 rounds, in the region of 50 bullets
6:49 pm
were fired by those eight officers. the three attackers were shot dead. well, that was assistant commissioner mark rowley of the metropolitan police. he was talking to reporters are short time ago. —— a short time ago. let's bring you up to date with what we know about the casualties. 36 people are being treated in hospital, 21 of those are in critical care, being treated in a number of london hospitals, five hospitals altogether. one of the injured who has been named so far is 23—year—old daniel o'neill, who is being treated at king's college hospital after he was stabbed at a bar in borough market. not very farfrom not very far from where i'm standing 110w. his mother has been speaking to the bbc. he was in borough, he had just stepped outside the barfor a second,
6:50 pm
and a man ran up to him and said, "this is for my family, this is for islam", and stuck a knife straight in him. he's got a seven—inch scar going from his belly round to his back. after the attack, did the man run away or did he continue? the man ran away. daniel headed back into the pub. there were shots fired, everybody was told to lie down. and then they were told to go downstairs in the bar. at this stage, daniel's friend put it on a tourniquet on him and was holding pressure there. parts of that he doesn't remember. the police were there, they brought him in a car and took him to hospital. the police have been fantastic. the nurses and staff have been amazing. is he able to talk to you at the moment? yes, he is able to talk. he still doesn't quite

believe what's happened. he's in shock. how do you feel, as a mum? how would you feel as a father? i'm still in shock. i still can't quite believe it's happened. absolutely senseless, these attacks. and these people say they are doing it in the name of god, which is an absolute joke. the first commandment is, thou shalt not kill. all faiths share that belief. if it wasn't religion, they would find some other excuse. their callous, their barbaric. their absolute cowards, and we're going to carry on as normal. the mother of daniel o'neill, being treated at king's college hospital for his injuries. this is the second attack on british soil in two weeks, just a few days after the manchester attack. this evening it is concert by ariana grande and many other stars who are raising

funds for victims of the attack. that concert is about to get underway injust that concert is about to get underway in just a few minutes time. earlier, the crowd fell silent to remember the victims of last night's attack here in london. choose love, manchester. applause emotional scenes ahead of that

concert. manchester and london, two cities united, really, in grief and shock at these terror attacks. but also in defiance, and an insistence that life will go on. and of course, the concert going on this evening despite some people initially wondering whether it would because of security fears after this latest terror attack in london. but it's going ahead with huge security of course there. annita mcveigh is going to be watching the concert. bring us up—to—date, annita? going to be watching the concert. bring us up-to-date, annita? that was an impeccably observed minute of silence in memory of the victims of the manchester arena attacked and of course as well sadly the victims of the attacks in london last night. just before that we heard the mayor of greater manchester, andy burnham, give a short speech in which he said it was hard to find the right words on such an equation as this. but he thanked the people of manchester for
6:54 pm
their solidarity, their unity in the last couple of weeks. he thanked the emergency services for their work. there was the most enormous cheer and round of applause when he mentioned the emergency services, who of course are out in force today to make sure that people can attend this concert safely. carrying out checks around the old trafford cricket ground, and keeping a watchful eye of the many comings and goings here today. well, we arejust minutes away now from the concert beginning. this concert that will benefit the emergency fund set up to help the relatives of those who died, and of course the people injured in the manchester arena bomb attack. and it. tough with marcus mumford, and then some manchester favours —— it will start off with marcus mumford. so much as the favourites, take that and robbie

williams. we have international stars, the black eyed peas, miley cyrus, justin bieber. and of course, ariana grande herself, who bowed to come back here and do this concert. she really wanted, she said, do help the victims of the attack, the attacks just after her concert ended in matters de roon of course. her manager earlier today but up a very powerful statement, saying that this concert tonight has an even greater meaning, a greater potency, in the light of the attacks in london last night. he called for everyone to come together as one voice to unite, to show that even though they may be feeling nervous, a little afraid, perhaps, that they are not afraid. you can hear them. they are not
6:56 pm
afraid to demonstrate that they will carry on with their lives. excuse me asi carry on with their lives. excuse me as i dipped downjust to bring you that statement in a little more detail. that statement from ariana grande's manager. after the events last night in london and those in manchester does two weeks ago, we feel a sense of responsibility and one of those lost, injured and affected. we plan to honour them with courage, bravery and defiance in the face of fear. to date's one love manchester benefit concert will not only continue but will do so with greater brothers. we must not be afraid. and, in tribute to all of those affected here and around the world, we will bring our voices together and sing loudly. all of the artists involved this evening have been unwavering in their support,
6:57 pm
and are determined to carry on with the show. we asked the strong city of manchester and the world to join us of manchester and the world to join us in making a statement that hatred and fear will never win. today we stand together. as you look at these images from inside the old trafford ground, you see the evidence of that. i think i'm hearing they are just one minute away from the opening of this concert. and talking to people a little earlier, we can hear that they were very much glad to be here tonight. they weren't going to let anything stop them. and although this will be a very emotional evening, there is a sense of bravado now, i suppose, and that
6:58 pm
will give way undoubtedly to tears, the emotion. joy, enjoyment of the music, a whole gamut of feelings tonight. above all, it demonstrates that people love manchester. another moment of silence. let's not be afraid.
6:59 pm
it looks like an almost capacity 50,000 crowd. many of those were at the concert two weeks ago, and the rest of the crowd made up from those who bought the tickets which sold all -- who bought the tickets which sold all —— out within 20 minutes of going on sale. there are various groups on hand tonight, to help counsel anyone who wants to talk. wa nts to

counsel anyone who wants to talk. wants to talk about the events of the last two weeks. their feelings, their response to what's been happening in this city. and speaking to andy burnham just a little earlier, he spoke about the great sense of unity in the city in the last two weeks, and he said that that unity must be put to use. it must be put to use by finding ways to deal with the threat that exists in our society, to bring people together, and to try to prevent further attacks. and of course tonight this is an act of remembrance of those who died at
7:01 pm
manchester arena, it is an act of solidarity with their families, and those who were injured. it is an act of celebration of music. the very reason that people were at manchester arena in the first place. and it is an act of collective defiance. just listen to that cheer. an act of collective defiance, people saying they will carry on. well, that's the cheering after the first act. goodness knows what it is going to be like later. the unmistakable sound of take that, and
7:02 pm
a massive cheer greets the mancunians. the unmistakable sounds of take that, the crowd in full voice already. to act in, they are singing along at the tops of their voices, with a song that is so familiar to them. they are waving their hands in them. they are waving their hands in the air, they are really enjoying this. manchester deserves this, doesn't it, it has the most —— it has had the most horrible couple of weeks, and no one is pretending that a music concert can make anything
7:03 pm
better, but for these people here tonight, for many people watching this, it will transport them to somewhere else, better feelings for a while, and really that is the purpose of any event like this. it is absolutely wonderful to see the people here enjoying this music so much. and that is what this concert is all about. —— one love manchester. we will look back here ina while, manchester. we will look back here in a while, but now it is over to my colleague ben brown. thank you very much indeed, and manchester and london to cities united in grief and anger and defiance as well, after the two terror attacks they have suffered in the space of less than a fortnight. we are live just outside

borough market in london bridge where the attacks unfolded last night. you might be able to see the armed officers behind me, a lot of police activity. we are at one of many cordons around borough markets. so to terror attacks on british soil ina so to terror attacks on british soil in a fortnight three in three months. so let us bring you up to date on what we know about what happened here last night. police responded to reports first of all of a van ploughing into pedestrians on london bridge, they got the first calls at eight minutes past ten local time last night. the vehicle then crashed, it was abandoned. three men jumped out, then crashed, it was abandoned. three menjumped out, heading for borough markets, armed with knives, and they began randomly stabbing people, people out enjoying a warm saturday night. within eight minutes of that first emergency call coming through to the police, the three

attackers had been shot dead. eight officers were involved in that operation, firing some 50 rounds, a member of the public was accidentally hit and injured. well, 12 people have been arrested in barking in east london today, police operations are continuing. earlier, downing street, the prime minister chaired a meeting of the government's emergencies committee, and she said there needed to be a stronger response to islamist extremism, she said "it is time to say, enough is enough." ourfirst report this evening is from our home editor mark easton, and i should say you may find some of the images in his report distressing. clear the area now! and a country cried — please not again. we are hearing tonight that the british armed police have that british armed police have attended an incident
7:06 pm
at london bridge, we don't know anything more at this stage... atjust after ten last night, three men in a white van drove at speed across london bridge, determined to kill the spirit of the capital. oh, my god. a white van came speeding, 50 mph, it turned into the pavement, hit about three people in front of me. oh, my god! there was people just lying everywhere on the bridge, just people trying to help each other out, people bleeding, there wasjust blood everywhere. having deliberately mown down pedestrians, the three men got out of the van, knives in their hands, murder on their minds. he went and up and started stabbing this girl, i couldn't do nothing, mate. they attacked her, and they stabbed another guy, they went up the road, i started going, "everybody go,
7:07 pm
terrorists," they were stabbing everyone. hejust stabbed this person — if they got up, stabbed them again, move onto the next person. i was staring at them from the balcony, just thinking, how could someone do such a thing? they were running up, going, "this is for allah," and they stabbed this girl i don't know how many times, ten, 15 times. armed police were on the scene within minutes, as the three men moved towards the bars and restaurants of borough market, packed with people on a warm summer's night. they were running in all the pubs and bars, stabbing people, i was going, "run, run!"
7:08 pm
i was throwing things at them, pint glasses... people were throwing chairs, it seemed like chairs and glasses were going in both directions. these four friends were settling down for a meal in a mexican restaurant when the three knife men arrived. three men came in, one pulled out a knife and stabbed one of the girls sitting closest to the door, i think she was only 17. i got a glimpse of a guy with a knife, before i knew it, with a knife, and before i knew it the doors were shut, we were at the back of the restaurant. so you saw him? briefly, a glimpse. people were very scared, they began to run, knocking tables over to try to get out the way, and then very quickly, as we said, the men in the restaurant put the shutters down. in the early hours of this morning, claudia and lee, given refuge in a stranger's flat, told me what they saw from their apartmentjust above a pub the attackers are targeted on their killing spree. we looked out the window, people were running everywhere, we heard that there had beena stabbing... it was when i saw lots of people running down into the underground that i thought it was more serious,
7:09 pm
because it was mass panic, notjust a fight, it was something serious. one young guy seemed to come out of the pub, and he was knocking on the window of the ambulance, saying, "you have to help my friend, he's been stabbed, "he is in the pub..." whether that was inside or outside, i don't know, but he said "my friend's been stabbed." there was another guy, probably in his 40s, on the other side of the ambulance, knocking on the other window, saying "i've been stabbed", and he was covered in blood, he said, "i've been stabbed five times, help me." he must have been in shock, because he seemed very calm. he had his shirt open, all this side was pure blood, it was just around his neck. he was knocking on the window saying, "you have to help me." at this time, police cars were still heading to london bridge, apparently unaware of where the attackers were. this one guy walked out in the road,
7:10 pm
managed to grab the attention of one of the police cars and basically forced them down that road, saying, "you have to go down there, he's down there," and so this one police 4x4 screeched down stoney street, and then easily within five seconds there were six gunshots, or what sounded like six clear gunshots. gunfire. six rounds, two attackers dead. then, witnesses suggest, another volley of bullets as the third attacker was shot and killed, all within eight minutes of the first call to police. it seemed like a big attack was happening, so we wanted to keep the door locked. so i wasjust having a... must have been terrifying. it was terrifying — i was having a mental battle between either the idea of an explosion coming through the floor or us being on the street, which one do we do? so i shouted down and said, "what should we do?" one of the police officers said, "you have to get out "of the building now."
7:11 pm
it was an attack not just on individuals but on our way of life — the killers targeted people having fun, enjoying the freedoms of a diverse and liberal city. with daybreak, tales of bravery and heroism emerged from the horrors of the previous night. i heard truly remarkable stories of extraordinarily brave actions by officers on and off duty, who were first on the scene. i also heard of colleagues from other emergency services and members of the public who ran towards the danger as this incident unfolded. many, many people risked their own safety to help others, and to treat those seriously injured — and indeed to confront the suspects involved. the prime minister addressed the nation from downing street, also paying tribute to the work of the emergency services. on behalf of the people of london and the whole country, i want to thank and pay tribute to the professionalism and bravery of the police and emergency services, and to the courage of members
7:12 pm
of the public who defended themselves and others from the attackers. and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, and with their friends, families and loved ones. but mrs may was notjust reflecting a nation's shock — she promised the outrage would be met by a response. it is time to say, enough is enough. everybody needs to go about their lives as they normally would. our society should continue to function in accordance with our values. but when it comes to taking on extremism and terrorism, things need to change. london is still trying to come to terms with the awful events, to understand what happened. this was an appalling act of terror, where innocent londoners and visitors were enjoying a night out in london bridge and borough market,
7:13 pm
and were deliberately targeted by these cowardly terrorists. barricaded in bars and restaurants for two hours or more, police finally let people leave for home in the early hours, hands on their heads just in case an attacker was still among them. i just want people to know this is not what london is like, we are a strong, welcome, caring city, and this is a terrible thing to happen, but it won't stop us living our lives, really. london bridge is falling down, the song goes — but london appears determined to stand up to those who would divide it. people have been the —— leaving

they were injured in the westminster attackjust six weeks ago. medics here in central london are used to sta b here in central london are used to stab wounds, and gunshot wounds and is well. the first responders, the people who go out running into danger, as the prime minister was saying and cressida dick was saying, if they can stabilise patients and give them the triage to stop the blood loss, they have a very good chance of surviving once they get to a unit like your. indeed. they were treated at the scene, many of them very quickly. the ambulances were there within six minutes. they were brought to five hospitals, including once like this, major trauma units with everything they need. medics on stand—by, people came in as soon they were told they needed to. many just came in of their own accord, this is the exact place they need to be, a major trauma unit like this. you have a very positive chance, depending on how series —— syria's raw injury is. one of the victim -- asier riesgo injury is. one of the mothers of the victims was saying

that he was stabbed when he was outside a bar in borough market last night. i spoke to some of his friends, two of whom kept him alive. when he went back into the pub, one of his friends put it pressure packed on the stab wound and took him back into the pub. he was brought to this hospital by police officers in the back of a police car, putting pressure on that win. he is now able to set up in bed and talk to his mother and otherfamily members. back to you so one of many extraordinary stories of survival. if you are worried about friends, families or loved ones who you think were caught up in the attack and are injured, there is a casualty bureau that you can bring. i will give you the number. it is a i want to bring in the former chief

superintendent with the metropolitan police who is here at the police cordon. a third terror attack in the uk in something like three months, a second in two weeks. what are your thoughts? it is worrying. we should be very confident with the police service that we have got. we have the individuals who carried out the horrific attack, they were killed within eight minutes of the police being called. it was fantastic action by the police officers. they got there very quickly. you imagine how frightening it must have been for the officers as well as the individuals. fantastic work by the police. and indeed all of the emergency services. it is being stressed that these men were wearing dummy explosive vests. obviously the police officers trying to apprehend them did not know that they were fa ke them did not know that they were fake breasts. they could have been real suicide vests. absolutely -- that they were fake suicide vests. it shows the level of bravery. by

running towards those individuals they might have been putting their lives in danger. what we need to be doing is to make sure that we have enough resources for the police. i'm keen to make sure that we do everything we can to support the police officers. and indeed brave members of the public that have intervened and helped each other. london is an incredibly diverse part of the world. one in eight of london's population are muslim. we have to remember that this is an attack on all faiths. and really we need to make sure that we support what we do in this country to deal with terrorists and be very firm with terrorists and be very firm with the individuals who try and make sure that they cause damage to ask. what more can be done by the police, the operatives, to stop more attacks? the key thing is the community. so all the authorities. the community solve and deal with errors. we need to make sure that we have enough resources in place, the community feel confident coming forward. theresa may has talked about doing more work, doing a review of counterterrorism

legislation. i think that is helpful. one of the things we need to be looking at is prevent, to make sure that the government strategy is look that and more people are confident. the other key area is the end that. if you look at how the internet companies make billions of pounds in profit, a huge amount of money. they need to be made to share information with the authorities. if there is any concern about extremism. at the moment, these organisations like daesh or isis are using the internet to facilitate attacks. i think that is a really, really important area, we need to get tough on the internet companies. you can do all of that and still not prevented attack like we saw last night. three men in a white van driving at high speed and hitting pedestrians and then stabbing pupils to kill and unfortunately there a lwa ys to kill and unfortunately there always is a possibility. we need to make sure we do everything to reduce that possibility. a lot of these individuals are planning things on the internet, that is where we have got to go. we have to go after the

internet companies. there is no excuses, it is about the internet companies sharing information with the authorities are a timely way. they make huge amounts of profit, they need to spend some of that money monitoring what is being written on social media. you spent a long time as a senior officer at the metropolitan police. will their resources by stressed stretched at the minute at the moment? there is a lot of please work being done. the minute at the moment? there is a lot of please work being donelj imagine all police leave is being cancelled, but officers will be working incredibly long hours. it is what police officers do. they want to make london say. they will be totally committed to that. we need totally committed to that. we need to remember, when we see this extraordinary act of bravery, not only by the firearms officers but the off—duty officers who have attacked these individuals, we need to re m ove attacked these individuals, we need to remove that when police officers make mistakes it is often a genuine mistake, and we must by the bravery of the police officers for the

community, if they have any concerns about individuals, the key thing is to come forward, share that information and make sure that we detain any individuals who want to cause damage to our communities. thank you for being with us, former chief superintendent with the metropolitan police in london. let's go to manchester. the concert is under way to raise money for the victims of the manchester arena attack that left 22 dead and many more people injured. annita mcveigh is thursday the banks, ben. from the raw emotion of robbie williams‘ angels to the pure pop fun of the rural williams‘s happy, which he has just song with miley cyrus, the crowd loving every minute and they are singing along the top of boys is. this is what one love manchester is. this is what one love manchester is all about. —— at the top of their voices. first and foremost to raise money for the victims of the manchester arena attack. but it is
7:36 pm
also about more than that. it is about creating a sense ofjoy. about giving something back to this city, to the people of this city, who have suffered so much. in the last two weeks. including of course in the audience, many of those that were in the arena for the original concept. with me here i have our entertainment correspondent colin paterson. this is already quite a show. i guess sometimes music is a bit political. i don‘t want to make too much of that. but this concert is really making a statement, isn‘t it? it's feeling very euphoric. big singalongs right from the. take that coming on and singing shine. robbie williams changing the lyrics to his song wrong to manchester, you are strong. the crowd lapped it up. —— his song, strong. reallyjoyous moment. all of these acts are acts
7:37 pm
that have played at the manchester arena. when that attack happened, it will have felt personal to them because they knew that place, it is one of the biggest indoor arenas injure up, the major act of the world all play there, like miley cyrus. but as one of the reasons why they wanted to show solidarity manchester. the calibre of these a cts manchester. the calibre of these acts tonight, some of the biggest a cts acts tonight, some of the biggest acts in the world right now. that is acts in the world right now. that is a really fantastic message to deliver to mancunians, to manchester. they want to come here and be part of one love manchester. we have had the prizes already. marcus mumford from mumford & sons, we didn't know he was playing. —— we have had surprises. we know coldplay going to close the event. but after them, there is one more act to come. we don't know who it is. who could be bigger than coldplay cosmic people are debating already. do you have any idea? it could be liam gallagher, his song, don't look back
7:38 pm
in anger, has become an anthem. i would expect coldplay to incorporate a bit of it into one of their songs. when ariana grande comes on, that‘s going to be quite a moment. we know she has been visiting some of the injured children, her young fans in hospital in the last few days. i think there‘s going to be a lot of emotion. she's only 23 years old, it's worth saying that. from florida, a really young woman, and so florida, a really young woman, and so much responsibility on her. the fa ct so much responsibility on her. the fact that she wants to come back and do this gig within two weeks of a terrorist attack really does say a lot. i was in here today and saw her sound checking. she was wearing the white love manchester sweatshirts that are being sold to raise money. she looked amazingly composed and was actually being able to share jokes with her backing band, quite enjoying herself onstage. sol jokes with her backing band, quite enjoying herself onstage. so i think she is going to be able to come on, deliver a performance. what an emotional might for ariana grande, who has managed with her manager, they have thrown all of this together. it was good to brawn who
7:39 pm
said earlier that this event has a huge purpose but an even greater purpose in the light of the london attacks. absolutely. he contacted each actor on the bill to say whether they were still wanting to go ahead. he said that absolutely everyone of the acts did. he said tonight they had to put on this gig tonight they had to put on this gig to show that fear will not win. it's interesting. the rural williams came on and said, you know, i do not see the. —— pharrell williams. the place we nt the. —— pharrell williams. the place went crazy at that moment. a lot of people here are going through this personal journey of people here are going through this personaljourney of healing as well. i spoke to a girl who had been taken by her mum, there had been a lot of talks in the family this week about whether they would come to the gate, because they were at the ariana grande gate and she had suffered panic attacks since. she thought the best way to get over it was to come here. ican best way to get over it was to come here. i can see her overthere, and she is bouncing. colin was saying how composed —— she is dancing. how
7:40 pm
composed ariana grande was during her soundtrack. looking at the thousands of people streaming into old trafford earlier for this event, they were really composed, too. they we re they were really composed, too. they were doing manchester and themselves proud. they were showing that they would not be afraid, that they would carry on, that they would enjoy this evening. just behind me, miley cyrus still on the stage. the crowd absolutely loving these acts here to perform for them. and much, much more to come from one love manchester this evening. ben, more to come from one love manchesterthis evening. ben, back to use. thank you, annita mcveigh at that concert. back here in london, in borough high street, just outside borough market, let‘s talk to mike haines, whose brother david haynes was killed by so—called islamic

state back in september 2014. i know you work very hard, going around the country, trying to end hate, really. just tell us what you do and what is your response to what happened here? i visit schools, colleges, universities, churches, mosques, basically anywhere that will have me to talk about unity, tolerance and peace, tell my family story and try to make something positive. to try and fight the hatred that terrorists and fight the hatred that terrorists and extremists of all types want to bring into our society. and what are your ports after this latest attack was like we have had three attacks in three months —— what are your thoughts. wherever a terrorist attack occurs, and for whatever so—called reason, it hits my family ha rd so—called reason, it hits my family hard because we know that other
7:42 pm
families are suffering the way that mine have done. we know that families have lost. and it is... i can understand the hate, the anger, the hurt that they must be feeling. however, we can‘t take that path of hatred. if we take that path that divide us, that divides our society, then we are doing the extremists and then we are doing the extremists and the terrorists‘ job for them. so it‘s important that we try to take that path of unity. that path of... humanity. do you think there should be tough action? the prime minister has talked about tough action to try and stop this kind of thing in the future happening again?|j and stop this kind of thing in the future happening again? i think the police and the security services in this country are doing a fine job, but they have a lot to do. i think
7:43 pm
there is a certain responsibility on our own half that extremists of all types, we need to try and reach out to our young, types, we need to try and reach out to ouryoung, angry types, we need to try and reach out to our young, angry men and women who have been estranged from society for whatever reason to bring them back into the fold. to embrace the humanity of our great nation. you know, islamic state claimed the manchester attack certainly, they killed your brother, what should be our reaction to them now?” killed your brother, what should be our reaction to them now? i think until the police have finished their investigation and they have got definite proof, then we should withhold judgment on that. i think that they should be brought to justice. face trial for whatever
7:44 pm
crimes they have committed. and not for my brother, but for the crimes against humanity. mike haynes, thank you so much for being with us. mike‘s brother david was killed by islamic state in syria back in 2014. the prime minister said earlier today she believes there needs to be tough action to stop more terrorist atrocities like the one that happened here at borough market and london bridge last night. frank gardner reports. march the 22nd, westminster. a lone attacker uses a 4x4 and knives to murder pedestrians and a policeman. may the 22nd, manchester arena. a suicide bomber kills 22 people, including children. june the 3rd, london. terrorists killed seven and injured dozens using a truck and knives. armed police have spent years training for exactly these sort of marauding attacks. they now have more powerful weapons, better intelligence and a faster
7:45 pm
reaction time than ever before. yet what they are up against is a growing problem. the country needs to wake up to the fact this is an increasing threat, not a decreasing threat, both globally and within our midst in the uk, in our communities here in the uk. this increasing threat needs to be confronted head—on. it is notjust about resources for intelligence agencies and the police, we need to confront the ideology and theology driving this threat. also driving it is the imminent loss of the is self—proclaimed caliphate in syria and iraq. after two years of brutal rule, jihadists look to be driven out of mosul and raqqa. they are calling for revenge attacks in europe. it says the west is condemned byjihadists what ever it does. we are blamed by jihadists, like iraq.
7:46 pm
we do not intervene, like in syria, we are blamed byjihadists for not caring about muslim lies. —— muslim lives. anything that is consistent is the identity crisis and the ideological narrative. that‘s something we can do something about. we need to foster the kind of society in which people feel they belong. the advice given by the metropolitan police to the public is blunt. in the event of a terrorist attack, they are telling people to run, tell and hide — at least until the threat is dealt with. the scale of the terrorist threat is daunting. at least 500 active plots under investigation, around 3000 subject of interest being monitored. and 20,000 individuals in a wider network. three terrorist attacks getting through in just three months throws and a comfortable spotlight on m15, the security service behind me. it is theirjob to try to provide the intelligence to stop these before they happen. they have helped to do that successfully 18 times
7:47 pm
in the past four years. but now the scale of the problem facing this country is causing some to question whether they can cope with what they are up against. gchq, the government‘s listening station, is engaged in a constant battle to break into terrorists‘ communications. a former independent reviewer of terrorism legislation believes tech companies should do more. there is a need for change in approach. a few years ago one tech company said, we are merely a library. that won‘t do. there needs to be a law saying they are not merely a library. they are big companies. they have economy is bigger than many nations. they have a responsibility to all of us to ensure that unlawful, terrorist content does not appear on the internet anymore. tonight, britain remains at threat level severe, the second—highest below critical, meaning a further attack is thought highly likely. that threat is unlikely to subside soon. frank gardner, bbc news. in

manchester, the concert to raise money, to raise funds for the victims of the manchester arena attack less than a fortnight ago, thatis attack less than a fortnight ago, that is underway. ariana grande is about to take the stage, we are hearing. let‘s go back to my colleague annita mcveigh, who is there for us this evening. ben, thank you. a mellow moment as you read joining us here at the old trafford cricket ground. niall horan is on the stage at the moment. the crowd is singing along, as really they have done since this concert started. you know, with the likes of take that and robbie williams on near the beginning, you canjust imagine how the crowd sang along to those familiar songs from such familiar artists. those familiar songs from such familiarartists. robbie those familiar songs from such familiar artists. robbie williams‘ angels was a really striking moment. but then that was followed a few moments later by pharrell williams and miley cyrus singing happy. he

went from something very emotional to pure pop one. as you mentioned, inafew to pure pop one. as you mentioned, in a few moments we are expecting to cre on a grand day for herself. we are told that her producers are coming on the stage first of all —— to cre on a grand day herself. the crowd showing their appreciation as niall horan finishes his songs. and of course it‘s been ariana grande and her producers who have been instrumental in pulling together this absolutely stellar line—up for tonight in such a short space of time. and it was ariana grande‘s manager who talked earlier today about the greater berbers of this concert tonight. —— the greater purpose. in the light of the london attacks as well. and in fact ariana

of those kids that i would deliver a message. his name is adam, he is 15 years old, he lost his best friend olivia last night, and just as i was about to leave the room, adam looked at me and he said, hey, scooter, make sure you tell them, don't go forward in anger, love spreads. cheering adam, if you're watching, you are our hero tonight. this tragedy has made us all go away and put aside our differences and our politics and look to our children. manchester, your bravery is our hope. you are joining us here today with so many watching around the world, it sends that message spoken by a olivia campbell chardy's mother, charlotte, that her daughter and all those lost will never be victims. as unfortunately we saw yesterday, evil will passed us. it will show its

these couple of hours, people tonight, they are not going to forget what happened two weeks ago, but they will experience the joy that music brings, the joy that brought them to the concert two weeks ago in the first place. so this concert is about so much, it is about remembering but it is also about remembering but it is also about celebrating the lives of those people who died as well. those who we re people who died as well. those who were injured and celebrating their love of music. so the concert continues, we are expecting more from ariana grande very shortly. but this report now from mark easton, bringing us up to date on last might‘s events. clear the area now! and a country cried — please not again. we are hearing tonight that british armed police have attended
8:03 pm
an incident at london bridge, we don't know anything more at this stage... atjust after ten last night, three men in a white van drove at speed across london bridge, determined to kill the spirit of the capital. oh, my god. a white van came speeding, 50 mph, it turned into the pavement, hit about three people in front of me. oh, my god! there was people just lying everywhere on the bridge, just people trying to help each other out, people bleeding, there wasjust blood everywhere. having deliberately mown down pedestrians, the three men got out of the van, knives in their hands, murder on their minds. he went and up and started stabbing this girl, i couldn't do nothing, mate. they attacked her, and they stabbed another guy, they went up the road,
8:04 pm
i started going, "everybody go, terrorists," they were stabbing everyone. hejust stabbed this person — if they got up, stabbed them again, move onto the next person. i was staring at them from the balcony, just thinking, how could someone do such a thing? they were running up, going, "this is for allah," and they stabbed this girl i don't know how many times, ten, 15 times. armed police were on the scene within minutes, as the three men moved towards the bars and restaurants of borough market, packed with people on a warm summer‘s night. they were running in allthe pubs and bars, stabbing people, i was going, "run, run!" i was throwing things at them, pint glasses... people were throwing chairs, it seemed like chairs and glasses were going in both directions.
8:05 pm
these four friends were settling down for a meal in a mexican restaurant when the three knifemen arrived. three men came in, one pulled out a knife and stabbed one of the girls sitting closest to the door, i think she was only 17. i got a glimpse of a guy with a knife, and before i knew it the doors were shut, we were at the back of the restaurant. so you saw him? briefly, a glimpse. people were very scared, they began to run, knocking tables over to try to get out the way, and then very quickly, as we said, the men in the restaurant put the shutters down. in the early hours of this morning, claudia and liam, given refuge in a stranger‘s flat, told me what they saw from their apartmentjust above a pub the attackers are targeted on their killing spree. we looked out the window, people were running everywhere, we heard that there had beena stabbing... it was when i saw lots of people
8:06 pm
running down into the underground that i thought it was more serious, because it was mass panic, notjust a fight, it was something serious. one young guy seemed to come out of the pub, and he was knocking on the window of the ambulance, saying, "you have to help my friend, he‘s been stabbed, "he is in the pub..." whether that was inside or outside, i don‘t know, but he said "my friend‘s been stabbed." there was another guy, probably in his 40s, on the other side of the ambulance, knocking on the other window, saying "i‘ve been stabbed", and he was covered in blood, he said, "i‘ve been stabbed five times, help me." he must have been in shock, because he seemed very calm. he had his shirt open, all this side was pure blood, it was just around his neck. he was knocking on the window saying, "you have to help me." at this time, police cars were still heading to london bridge, apparently unaware of where the attackers were. this one guy walked out in the road, managed to grab the attention of one of the police cars and basically
8:07 pm
forced them down that road, saying, "you have to go down there, he‘s down there," and so this one police 4x4 screeched down stoney street, and then easily within five seconds there were six gunshots, or what sounded like six clear gunshots. gunfire. six rounds, two attackers dead. then, witnesses suggest, another volley of bullets as the third attacker was shot and killed, all within eight minutes of the first call to police. it seemed like a big attack was happening, so we wanted to keep the door locked. so i wasjust having a... must have been terrifying. it was terrifying — i was having a mental battle between either the idea of an explosion coming through the floor or us being on the street, which one do we do? so i shouted down and said, "what should we do?" one of the police officers said, "you have to get out "of the building now." it was an attack not just on individuals but on our way of life —
8:08 pm
the killers targeted people having fun, enjoying the freedoms of a diverse and liberal city. with daybreak, tales of bravery and heroism emerged from the horrors of the previous night. i heard truly remarkable stories of extraordinarily brave actions by officers on and off duty, who were first on the scene. i also heard of colleagues from other emergency services, and members of the public who ran towards the danger as this incident unfolded. many, many people risked their own safety to help others, and to treat those seriously injured — and indeed to confront the suspects involved. the prime minister addressed the nation from downing street, also paying tribute to the work of the emergency services. on behalf of the people of london
8:09 pm
and the whole country, i want to thank and pay tribute to the professionalism and bravery of the police and the emergency services, and to the courage of members of the public who defended themselves and others from the attackers. and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, and with their friends, families and loved ones. but mrs may was notjust reflecting a nation‘s shock — she promised the outrage would be met by a response. it is time to say, enough is enough. everybody needs to go about their lives as they normally would. our society should continue to function in accordance with our values. but when it comes to taking on extremism and terrorism, things need to change. london is still trying to come to terms with the awful events, to understand what happened. this was an appalling act of terror, where innocent londoners and visitors were enjoying a night
8:10 pm
out in london bridge and borough market, and were deliberately targeted by these cowardly terrorists. barricaded in bars and restaurants for two hours or more, police finally let people leave for home in the early hours, hands on their heads just in case an attacker was still among them. i just want people to know this is not what london is like, we are a strong, welcome, caring city, and this is a terrible thing to happen, but it won‘t stop us living our lives, really. london bridge is falling down, the song goes — but london appears determined to stand up to those who would divide it. as you join us here live on borough

high street, let‘s talk to someone who is in the scotland yard anti—terrorist squad. david, thank you for being with us. what are your thoughts in the wake of these attacks, the third terror attack in three months? it is a terrible time and obviously we have lost 34 people in the last 73 days and we have not seen terror like this in london or the country since 2005, so it is a very worrying time and we should all be concerned, but the police response yesterday was amazing. we had all the right resources in the right places. things could have been done better, but it is a concerning time for russ and we need to be looking at why it is happening and what we can do about it. presumably at scotland yard everyone will be

working flat—out, resources stretched to the limit? absolutely. everybody will be working 18—19 hour days, people have been called in from leave, people catching flights home, everyone will be doing as much as they can. pull all the stops out, eve ryo ne as they can. pull all the stops out, everyone has to muck in and do their bit. we had been told of course about how many plots the intelligence agencies and the police had foiled, but at the same time we we re had foiled, but at the same time we were always been warned that probably terror attacks were inevitable and now we have had two ina inevitable and now we have had two in a fortnight, three in three months. indeed. i do in a fortnight, three in three months. indeed. ido not in a fortnight, three in three months. indeed. i do not think they are inevitable. we can deal with them and they asked operable. the low—tech attacks certainly that we saw on westminster bridge and last night will happen. although the numbers of the dead are awful, these
8:13 pm
low—tech attacks are the most difficult types to catch because these people do not tend to do much hostile reconnaissance, much planning. there is reports of the man who hired the van only a few days ago, so there are no tell—tale signs as someone making a bomb. back to manchester, it had been planned for a long time. the low—tech attacks are difficult to stop and thatis attacks are difficult to stop and that is why we need bobbies on the beach, getting information from the community because that is how we will stop it. thank you. let's go to our home affairs correspondent who is at new scotland yard with the latest. a significant number of arrests today. yes, a very large number of arrests, 12 in a small area of north—east london, around
8:14 pm
barking and east ham. we may find some of those are to do with people known to be associates of the people who carried out this attack. they will be people that police will want to run from this enquiry so i do not know that we will get 12 charges from those arrests, but at this stage in this operation, you have to get through all be known associates of the people who carried out the attack and worked through them and thatis attack and worked through them and that is what is going on. the police worked out the identity is pretty quickly of these three men. they are still trying to be absolutely certain about that, but i do not think there is much doubt that they know who these three men were and they believe they have killed all three people responsible, which seems extraordinary to be saying that now. it would be unheard of in britain only if you give ago but now we a cce pt britain only if you give ago but now we accept that in an attack like this the only option the police have
8:15 pm
to do is shoot the people in the middle of the attack to prevent further loss of life. that has been quite good in terms of identifying the attackers. there is a huge amount of work to be done in terms of the forensic search of the very large crime scene, the county terrorism police do not like to leave behind anything at these crime scenes, they want to photograph everything, collect every single piece of evidence and it is an unusually large crime scene because of the journey the vehicle took across london bridge and then down borough high street and then the men going into borough market. that is a massive task and further down the line the task of trying to work out whether these men organised this by themselves or were they working with anyone else or requested to carry out the attack by somebody overseas. thank you very much. our home
8:16 pm
affairs correspondent. i want to show you some of the flowers that have been left here by people wanting to pay their respects to those who have lost their lives and you can see messages that have been left. isis will lose, one of the posters pinned to the wall there. love will win. for london. quite a lot of these flowers have been laid here by muslims, including a london imams who was here a few minutes ago with a group of muslim women as well and one young muslim man who has come here, just laying some flowers so we thought we would have a quick word with him. why did you want to come lay flowers? it is vital that the muslim community come to this location to show they condemn this attack. and that this does not
8:17 pm
represent the values and morals of islam whatsoever. it has violated the holy month of ramadan which muslims fast in. they preserve themselves from any evil in fact along with food. it is very important for every muslim to come out and say this is not in my name, isis does not represent islam or in any way follow islam at all. when you heard about this attack and how many people had been killed and injured, what went through your mind? i was shocked and disheartened. i was saddened. any person that was affected in the attack, it was as if one of my own family was affected. we have had three terror attacks in the last three terror attacks in the last three months on british soil. u nfortu nately three months on british soil. unfortunately there have been many attacks on british soil, across the globe in kabul, baghdad, all by isis
8:18 pm
and we condemn every single attack across the globe and say we are all united as a single global community. there has been talk about how we stop young muslims, people may be your age being radicalised in a dangerous way so that they carry out attacks. how does society, how does the muslim community do more to try and stop the dangerous radicalisation of young muslims? there are strategies repaired by the government that unfortunately have proven not to be as effective as we can see. we need to start reconsidering our actions and how they go about tackling these issues. yes the muslim community needs to enter div i the radical ideology the radical islam that arises. we need
8:19 pm
to reconsider our business interests with some of our allies and school some of these radical ideologies and we cannot compromise our humanity and our principles and values for the sake of business interests. de you think people watching you might say, applaud you for what you are saying but more of the muslim community need to speak out like what you are doing?” community need to speak out like what you are doing? i do not see why the muslims should be blamed for such attacks because obviously duck is it important that they speak out against it? it is important they do come out, do not let these people talk about islam for them. they must tell people this has nothing to do
8:20 pm
with islam, our values and morals and this is alljust the umbrella term of terrorism. thank you so much for talking to us. interesting to hear your views. let‘s talk about the casualties now of the attacks here at borough market and london bridge last night. we know a number of people are still in hospitals and our health correspondent has been talking to my colleague about the casualties in hospital at the moment. they are very well prepared for this kind of incident. this is a major trauma unit as you mention, that means it specialises in injuries like stabbings, gunshot wounds, road traffic accidents so it is already well prepared. it does
8:21 pm
have practices for this kind of big incident. whilst they are used to dealing with the source of injuries, they are not used to dealing with so many in such a short space of time, but they are well versed, this was the hospital people came to after the hospital people came to after the westminster attack. the fact that we are in central london, the medics are used to gunshot wounds and stabbings as wall. the first responders, if they can stabilise patients, if they can give them their triage to stop the blood loss, they have a good chance of surviving once they get to unit like it. they we re once they get to unit like it. they were treated on the scene, many of them very quickly. ambulances were there in six minutes. they were brought to major trauma units that have everything they need. people came in, they were volunteering, they came in as soon as they were told to hand this is the place they
8:22 pm
needed to be. he would have a very positive chance, depending how serious your injury is, and some of these injuries are extremely serious. the metropolitan police have opened a casualty bureau for those concerned about family and friends who may have been caught up in the attacks. the phone number is 0800 0961233. people looking at those flowers, reading the messages that have been left in respect for the seven people that have lost their lives and the 48 injured, 36 of them still in hospital. you‘re watching special coverage of the london terror attacks here one bbc news. continuing coverage here on bbc news of what happened here last night but now we will take a quick look at the weather forecast. it has been a

8:24 pm
be heavy. showers and some sunshine across northern ireland, but we are looking at rain across england and wales. not so much across eastern england but it will turn wet here later in the afternoon. the heavy rain will be further west and the heaviest of the rain likely to be across wales and north—west england. there is a met office warning, there could be as much as 80 millimetres of rain. that wet weather pushes its way eastwards and the winds start to pick up behind that and blow in some showers. the main area of low pressure takes the rain northwards towards scotland where it will sit for a while. that weather front pushes the rain away from eastern areas of england and they we will see strong winds whipping up rain and showers. the more persistent rain continues in the far north of england but more likely across a good part of scotland. the rain is

still around on wednesday. windy weather for scotland and northern england. otherwise a window of dry weather before we start to see more rain coming in from the south—west. that rain will be heavy at times over the weekend. whilst there will be drier spells, rain will not be too far away and it is often windy. hello, this is bbc news. you are watching continued coverage of last night‘s attacks last night. we have two additions of the papers tonight. i will bejoined by two political commentators. i hope you canjoin us. the headlines: police have arrested 12 people in barking in east london as the investigation continues into the terror attack
8:26 pm
on london bridge on saturday night in which seven people were killed and nearly 50 injured. the attackers drove a van into pedestrians before three men jumped out and began stabbing people in their path. nearly 50 people were taken to hospital — around 20 are in a critical condition. a french citizen and a canadian citizen are among the dead. the police say they now know the identities of the attackers. they were shot dead after special officers fired an unprecedented number of bullets at the men, who were wearing fake suicide belts. britain‘s prime minister, theresa may, who‘s visited some of the wounded in hospital, said thursday‘s general election would go ahead. she condemned the attack, saying enough is enough. we must come together and pull together, and we will defeat our enemies. the singer ariana grande has been leading a star—studded line—up
8:27 pm
at a concert in manchester in aid of the families of the victims of the bombing that took place in the city two weeks ago. now, with the latest developments after last night‘s attack, ben brown is at borough high street. we are very close to borough market with the attack happened last night and also london bridge. seven killed and also london bridge. seven killed and 48 injured, 36 still in hospital. let‘s get this report on the police investigation into what happened here. tonight, the focus of the police investigation —
8:28 pm
a block of flats in barking. so far, 12 people have been arrested. women escorted from the building. these pictures were taken by those living inside. armed police surround them, lying on the floor with their hands behind their backs. the bbc also understands one of the london attackers who died had lived here. we are not naming him at the request of the police, who say it could jeopardise their investigation. but we‘ve spoken to this man, who knew him. he says over the past two years the attacker became more and more extreme. we spoke about a particular attack that happened. like most radicals, he had a justification for everything. for everything and anything. and that day i realised that i need to contact the authorities. this man would only speak to the bbc‘s asian network if we protected his identity and changed his voice. he used to listen to a lot of... i've heard this stuff, and it's very radical. i'm surprised some of this stuff is still on youtube
8:29 pm
and easily accessible. i phoned the anti—terrorist hotline. i spoke to the gentleman, i told him about our conversation and why i think he's been radicalised. the friend also claims the alleged attacker was not arrested after he was reported, and was allowed to keep his passport. i did my bit. i know a lot of people did, but the authorities didn't do their bit. we have asked the metropolitan police to respond to these allegations. this evening they described the force used to bring it under control. we will have an investigation by the ipcc. our initial assessment is in the region of 50 bullets were fired by eight officers. the three attackers were shot dead. and tonight, this was east ham. officers are still searching homes,
8:30 pm
still looking for answers. as you read join us live, let‘s talk toa as you read join us live, let‘s talk to a superintendent in the metropolitan police in the 30 years. a lot of expertise in policing and this capital city. what are your thoughts in the wake of this devastating attack here last night? commiserations to the people who have been killed and injured, and that only here in london, london bridge, westminster, but in manchester. but we have seen some amazing work by my ex—colleagues, how they responded and saved lives, but we have got issues around how we
8:31 pm
work to have a counter narrative on this whole extreme violence whether it is faith —based or otherwise. we need to work with communities and a key part of that is the faith in the police services, neighbourhood teams and people who work in partnership with communities. they are the ones who really know their communities and unfortunately those numbers have been eroded for so long over the la st been eroded for so long over the last few years because of posterity. we need to build back those numbers to build community partnerships and build intelligence that helps to prevent this. so you're saying one of the issues is manpower? moral police manpower to work in the? also around investigations because we have 700 less detectives than we had a few years ago and, as a result of that, we're not getting the proactivity. we need to build back
8:32 pm
the infrastructure to help our proactivity around all sorts of violence, but in particular around terrorism, and we need to get the prevent strategy to be looked at very closely. i was googling, and top of the hit was prevent. it shows that it has this texture and look and feel that is not embracing people, especially from certain communities. and also, since the counterterrorism securities act 2015, we found the statutory duties that teachers, doctors and nurses have to inform about anyone who shows a lack of british values or any form of terrorist tendencies, they have to report them. that has had a massive impact on communities
8:33 pm
who believe they are being stigmatised and of course we have got to work closely with them to ensure we do this together. this is not the time to be stigmatising. it is time to be working together, especially with the police. a former superintendent with the metropolitan police force. the attack here comes four days before the general election on thursday, a campaign that has been paused twice because of terror attacks, the manchester attack and now this attack. the politicians did come out to condemn this attack. and from the
8:34 pm
prime minister, there was much tougher talk on tackling terrorism. theresa may called for countries around the world to act to stop internet firms allowing extremism online. there will be a review of the uk‘s counterterrorism strategy and she warned there was too much tolerance of extremism. while the recent attacks are not connected by, networks, they are connected in one important sense. they are bound together by the single evil ideology of islamist extremism that preaches hatred, so is division and promotes sectarianism. from here it seems an attempt to offer more than platitudes about the country‘s protection but this stage still little tangible detail about what
8:35 pm
that means, not least for some muslim communities who have a sense of anger. muslim communities across the uk are outraged at what has happened. we have had three terror attacks in the last three months and thatis attacks in the last three months and that is terrible for anyone who lives in this country. we want to work together without government and civil society to tackle terrorism where ever we find it. but those seeking power the campaign has quietened, but the question of security once again dominates.” hope it will not disrupt a process because we have to have a democratic process, but i also hope it reflects the need to have sufficient police office rs the need to have sufficient police officers on our street and sufficient intelligence to look at the terrorist threat, but all communities must come together. our strength is the strength of our community unity. all parties are determined democracy will not be reaped derailed. the election will ta ke reaped derailed. the election will take place on thursday, preparations
8:36 pm
continue, campaigns resuming full tomorrow, and now again the nation‘s safety at the heart of the debate. ukip says there has been an unwillingness to confront extremism in the past. we have got to fight fire with fire. there is a small number of people in this country who quite clearly hate who we are, hate the way we live and want to destroy our democracy. they are a cancer they need to be cut out. in scotland are warning robust action must not lead to the persecution of any community. terrorists win if we allow ourselves to become divided and they do so if we allow our freedoms and civil liberties to be undermined. that is what acts of terrorism are designed to do, to divide and to undefined the values that define who we are. this once again has become a balancing act between the need for security and action and the protection of civil liberties. we must work together to make sure we tackle terrorism in a
8:37 pm
very practical and effective way and do it together. what we must not do is trade away our freedoms, our great british freedoms, in response to the cowardly acts of these pathetic people last night. if we did that they would have won. but today, in the fight against terrorism, any sense of victory feels far away, any answer is hard to come by. one thing many here are holding onto, and attack designed to undermine democracy has only strengthened the will of those determined to protect it. labour is resuming its national campaign for the general election this evening with a pledge by its leader, jeremy corbyn, to do whatever is necessary to protect public safety, including allowing the police to use whatever force they need to save lives. he has been saying the labour party are promising do whatever it takes to protect public safety. the mass murderers who brought terror to our streets in london and manchester
8:38 pm
wa nt streets in london and manchester want our election halted. they want our democracy fought it, they want violence to overwhelm our right to vote in a fair peaceful election, to go about our lives freely. that is why there can be no doubt that next thursday‘s ago it must go ahead and neither can we suspend our campaigning. that was jeremy corbyn at a rally that wasjeremy corbyn at a rally in carlisle. let‘s go back to manchester now. that concept is underway with ariana grande day and many other stars performing this evening to raise funds for the victims of the manchester arena attack that left 22 people dead. my colleague is there for us this evening. ariana grande is on stage, just about to perform with miley
8:39 pm
cyrus. looking at some of the songs we have heard tonight, they have an added poignancy and take on an extra meaning. robbie williams, the black eyed peas who performed. just a short while ago, 24 boys and girls from high school harmony school choir, they performed with ariana grande day, singing my everything, what a moment for those teenagers to be in the stage in front of this crowd, taking part in the one love manchester event. well, with me here is our entertainment correspondent, watching all of this with me. going for a crowded house cover version, unexpected! it has turned into more ofan unexpected! it has turned into more of an ariana grande a concert. but
8:40 pm
it is not like acts come on and leave, they are intertwining with ariana grande day. she hasjust brought her boyfriend on as well. tell us about what it takes to put together a line—up like this instruction short period of time. we still have katy perry, justin bieber and coldplay to come. one of the organisers described as six months of work in six days. the stage was actually there because manchester band played here last saturday. but the idea ofjust flying over or these acts from all around the world, trying to coordinate their schedules, building the infrastructure, this whole area where they built the golden circle for the fans, they were not there.
8:41 pm
it has been interesting going to the press centre. every time you get into the lift, you do not know who will be there. one of the most important men in the record industry was there. the security, it is very tough to get in there but, once rubber, everyone is intermingling, but old—fashioned. rubber, everyone is intermingling, but old-fashioned. what about that moment when we had the high school choir on with ariana grande a? they sounded amazing. huge moment for them. they became head on the internet after singing an ariana grande song and decided to invite them along. huge moment for them. there has not been that much manchester on stage, but we do believe there is a closing actor might that will be from manchester. we cannot reveal it at the moment but there is a manchester act will close at the show. that is a little clue from you, colin. and robbie williams and take that, almost a reunion. the crowd absolutely loved
8:42 pm
that, that was the perfect start with this crowd. take that got the best big singalong of the night. robbie williams came on immediately afterwards. they did a kind of bowed together. robbie williams led the cloud in the manchester version of his single and a huge singalong of angel. david beckham and stevie wonder have appeared via video link as well. i think we can hear a little bit of robbie williams now from earlier, singing a couple of his biggest hits. another huge cheerfor
8:43 pm
another huge cheer for this concert punctuated by these massive rules of the crowd. giving their approval to the crowd. giving their approval to the artists here tonight, what they are doing, what this concert means to them and to manchester, one love manchester. you were saying how artists have adapted some of their songs and we had back clip of robbie williams who was singing manchester, we are strong. and the crowd sang it back to him, and boy did they sing it back! i went to beat liam gallagher gig earlier this week in manchester and, between the songs, the fans would break out into song. stand up to 22 was the big song.
8:44 pm
have not heard that tonight, maybe less of a double supporter crowd, but the crowd have a very good post. ten of the people here were at that ariana grande gig which was the subject of a terrorist attack. when we look at this area here, they are having a fantastic time. it cannot be easy for some of them to make the decision to come and we heard there are councillors intense behind the stage where they can go another moment and speak to someone if they cannot cope. we had ariana grande's manager salute those people. he said they had big decision to make. really powerful words from him when he said, your bravery, manchester, gives us hope. this really is a perfect example of music packing a
8:45 pm
punch, making a statement. right from the start, marcus mumford came on and the first words he said, let‘s not be afraid. that was the start of the concert and that seems to be for people are thinking about it, trying to make a stand, saying, this was a night where we will make a statement that hate does not work. when you look at the crowd out there, they do not look like people who are scared. thank you very much, colin. as i was mentioning a moment ago, really big acts to come, katy perry, justin bieber, coldplay, ariana grande still on the stage in her one love manchester sweatshirt, she really wants to give back to this city, to herfans, and they are loving it. we will be back later but, for the moment, over to you, ben. what an emotional night there
8:46 pm
in manchester. i want to show you a very striking image now of the brandenburg gate in berlin, you can see these pictures now. this is the brandenburg gate in berlin, lit up in the colours of the union flag, when there have been atrocities in france, we have seen the french flag on world landmarks, but now it is the british flag, the union flag, on the british flag, the union flag, on the brandenburg gate in berlin. a gesture of international solidarity. we have heard from the german chancellor expressing her sympathies and condolences to the victims of the latest terror attack in britain. i also want to show you the scene here in the borough high street very close to borough market where flowers have been laid. there is one message there which says, we have
8:47 pm
lived in this area for 50 years and we are saddened by the events of last night. our thoughts and prayers are with the victims. we can see some members of the seek community who have just arrived, some members of the seek community who havejust arrived, and some members of the seek community who have just arrived, and they are laying flowers as well in memory of the seven people who lost their lives last night as the three attackers ran down pedestrians and passers—by on london bridge and then carried out stabbing attacks iran borough market. all day people here have been coming to lay their flowers, small gestures. —— attacks on borough market. there have been denunciations from what happened here. james landale, reports now on the global reaction.
8:48 pm
this attack may have been targeted on the people of london, but the threat of terrorism is global, and world leaders were quick to express their now familiar remarks of solidarity. from around the globe, they took to social media to express their horror and sympathy. president putin of russia spoke of the cruelty and cynicism of the attack. and chancellor merkel said that, in the fight against terrorism, germany is resolutely at britain‘s side. in rome, the pope led prayers for peace that were echoed by other christian leaders. translation: may the spirit give peace to the entire world, heal the plagues of war and of terrorism that even tonight, in london, hit innocent civilians. let‘s pray for the victims and their families. it is right that when there is great evil, that we feel anger, but that anger must be turned on...its head, into a commitment tojustice, and not against any group of people, especially members of the islamic community.
8:49 pm
they have not done this, we must stand forjustice and peace, and in unity — it is division that the terrorists want. in new york, the authorities increased security across the city, particularly in areas full of pedestrians and tourists, like here in times square. overnight, donald trump called theresa may to offer his condolences. but on twitter, the president used the incident to renew his demand for a travel ban on visitors from six mostly muslim countries. and he also appeared to criticise the mayor of london, sadiq khan, for saying there was no need to be alarmed. in fact, mr khan was urging people not to be worried by the increased police presence on london‘s river and its streets. his spokesman said he had more important things to do than respond to mr trump‘s ill informed tweet. from paris, which has seen its share of terror attacks,
8:50 pm
president macron called theresa may to say that france was at britain‘s side. but he also reminded her of the importance of european co—operation in the fight against terrorism. france‘s prime minister visited a crisis centre monitoring events for french citizens caught up in the attack. la france et le royaume—uni... translation: france and the united kingdom are allies that have been subjected to a common threat, and we will be united in ourjoint response to it. france is holding its own parliamentary elections at the moment, and as a result of last night‘s attack, security has been tightened up here in london at polling stations where french nationals living in the uk are already casting their votes. few elections, it seems, can escape the shadow of terrorism. as you rejoin us live here just outside borough market, you can see
8:51 pm
some of the armed police still there and hundreds of police in this area, cordons every round the whole area, borough underground station hasjust reopened, one small sign of some sort of semblance of normality coming back, but a lot of the area around where it happened last night, london bridge and borough market, still closed. this is a crime scene, majorforensic still closed. this is a crime scene, major forensic investigation underway, even though the three attackers were shot dead by police within eight minutes of them first receiving the emergency calls from members of the public. seven dead, 48 injured and 36 of those injured still treated in hospital. you are watching continuing coverage of the london terror attacks here on bbc news. much more from the scene here
8:52 pm
in borough market, but we will go to a weather forecast now. it has been a mixture of sunshine and showers of the weekend that there is wet and windy weather set to arrive. this area of cloud develops into heavy rain and that wet wet show pushing into northern ireland, up towards scotland. most of england and wales, dry and clear for most of the night. it should not get too cold. temperatures 11 or 12. then later on, rain arrives in western parts of wales and the north—west of england. the wet weather clears away from scotland and northern ireland. but the rain sets and more widely across england and wales and winds pick up as well, especially near the south coast. it should not be too windy across scotland. we will find showers
8:53 pm
following that rain. some of the shells could be heavy. showers and sunshine across northern ireland. quite a bit of rain across england and wales. not so much across eastern england but it will turn wet here later on in the afternoon. the heavier rain will be further west. and not just over the heavier rain will be further west. and notjust over the hills but at lower levels. the heaviest of the rain over wales and north—west england. it could be as much as 80 of rain. you can see how that wet weather pushes its way eastwards and the winds pick up behind that and blow in some showers. the main area of low pressure takes the reins northwards to scotland, where it will sit around for awhile. that weather front pushes the rain away from eastern areas of england. vendor ‘s winds whip in sunshine and

showers. the more persistent rain in the of england. that rain could be heavy. it is still around in wednesday. windy weather for scotla nd wednesday. windy weather for scotland and northern england otherwise a window of dry weather before we start to see more rain coming in from the south—west. you will wonder weather someone has gone this week. that rain will be heavy at times. rain is never too far away. you‘re watching bbc news. i‘m ben brown. reporting live from borough market. 12 arrests are made by police investigating last night‘s terrorist attack here on london bridge that left seven people dead and left 48 injured. a van drove into pedestrians before three menjumped out and began stabbing people in nearby streets. they were running in all the pubs, all the bars, they were stabbing

everyone. i was going, run! a french citizen and a canadian citizen are among the dead. as details of the victims emerge, relatives of those hurt have been telling their stories. hejust stepped outside he just stepped outside the barjust for a second, and a man ran up to him and said, this is for my family, this is for islam, and stuck a knife straight in him. several homes are raided in barking in east london. it‘s thought that four of the 12 people arrested are women. the prime minister condemned what she called the "evil ideology of islamist extremism" and said it was time to say "enough is enough". there is to be frank far too much tolerance of extremism in our country. we need to become far more robust in identifying it and stamping it out across the public sector and across society.
8:56 pm
the singer ariana grande has been leading a star—studded line—up at a concert in manchester, in aid of the families of the victims of the bombing that took place in the city two weeks ago. good evening from central london, where seven people have been killed and many others injured, some critically, in the country‘s second terrorist attack in less than two weeks, the third in three months. we now know that seven people died in those attacks, 48 were injured, 36 of those are still in hospital and a number of those are still in
8:57 pm
critical care. the investigation into what happened here is fast moving. there have been 12 arrests in barking east london today. let‘s bring you up to date. police responded to reports of a van ploughing into pedestrians on london bridge shortly after ten o‘clock. the vehicle then crashed and was abandoned. three menjumped out, heading for the nearby borough market, borough market, where, armed with knives, they began stabbing people. within eight minutes, the three attackers were shot dead, firing 50 rounds. a member of the public nearby was accidentally hit and injured. 12 people have been arrested in east london in a series of raids.
8:58 pm
the prime minister has been chairing a meeting of cobra earlier on today. after that she said, enough is enough and called for a rethink of anti—terrorism strategies. let‘s get this report now from our home editor mark easton and you might find some of the images in the report distressing. clear the area now! and a country cried — please not again. we are hearing tonight that british armed police have attended an incident at london bridge, we don't know anything more at this stage... atjust after ten last night, three men in a white van drove at speed across london bridge, determined to kill the spirit of the capital. oh, my god. a white van came speeding, 50 mph, it turned into the pavement, hit about three people

in front of me. oh, my god! there was people just lying everywhere on the bridge, just people trying to help each other out, people bleeding, there wasjust blood everywhere. having deliberately mown down pedestrians, the three men got out of the van, knives in their hands, murder on their minds. he went and up and started stabbing this girl, i couldn't do nothing, mate. they attacked her, and they stabbed another guy, they went up the road, i started going, "everybody go, terrorists," they were stabbing everyone. hejust stabbed this person — if they got up, stabbed them again, move onto the next person. i was staring at them from the balcony, just thinking, how could someone do such a thing?
9:00 pm
they were running up, going, "this is for allah," and they stabbed this girl i don't know how many times, ten, 15 times. armed police were on the scene within minutes, as the three men moved towards the bars and restaurants of borough market, packed with people on a warm summer‘s night. they were running in allthe pubs and bars, stabbing people, i was going, "run, run!" i was throwing things at them, pint glasses... people were throwing chairs, it seemed like chairs and glasses were going in both directions. these four friends were settling down for a meal in a mexican restaurant when the three knifemen arrived. three men came in, one pulled out a knife and stabbed one of the girls sitting closest to the door, i think she was only 17. i got a glimpse of a guy with a knife, and before i knew it the doors were shut, we were at the back
9:01 pm
of the restaurant. so you saw him? briefly, a glimpse. people were very scared, they began to run, knocking tables over to try to get out the way, and then very quickly, as we said, the men in the restaurant put the shutters down. in the early hours of this morning, claudia and liam, given refuge in a stranger‘s flat, told me what they saw from their apartmentjust above a pub the attackers had targeted on their killing spree. we looked out the window, people were running everywhere, we heard that there had beena stabbing... it was when i saw lots of people running down into the underground that i thought it was more serious, because it was mass panic, notjust a fight, it was something serious. one young guy seemed to come out of the pub, and he was knocking on the window of the ambulance, saying, "you have to help my friend, he‘s been stabbed, he is in the pub..." whether that was inside or outside, i don‘t know, but he said "my
9:02 pm
friend‘s been stabbed." there was another guy, probably in his 40s, on the other side of the ambulance, knocking on the other window, saying "i‘ve been stabbed", and he was covered in blood, he said, "i‘ve been stabbed five times, help me." he must have been in shock, because he seemed very calm. he had his shirt open, all this side was pure blood, it was just around his neck. he was knocking on the window saying, "you have to help me." at this time, police cars were still heading to london bridge, apparently unaware of where the attackers were. this one guy walked out in the road, managed to grab the attention of one of the police cars and basically forced them down that road, saying, "you have to go down there, he‘s down there," and so this one police 4x4 screeched down stoney street, and then easily within five seconds there were six gunshots, or what sounded like six clear gunshots. gunfire. six rounds, two attackers dead.
9:03 pm
then, witnesses suggest, another volley of bullets as the third attacker was shot and killed, all within eight minutes of the first call to police. it seemed like a big attack was happening, so we wanted to keep the door locked. so i wasjust having a... must have been terrifying. it was terrifying — i was having a mental battle between either the idea of an explosion coming through the floor or us being on the street, which one do we do? so i shouted down and said, "what should we do?" one of the police officers said, "you have to get out "of the building now." it was an attack not just on individuals but on our way of life — the killers targeted people having fun, enjoying the freedoms of a diverse and liberal city. with daybreak, tales of bravery and heroism emerged from the horrors of the previous night. i heard truly remarkable stories of extraordinarily brave actions by officers on and off duty, who were first on the scene.
9:04 pm
i also heard of colleagues from other emergency services, and members of the public who ran towards the danger as this incident unfolded. many, many people risked their own safety to help others, and to treat those seriously injured — and indeed to confront the suspects involved. the prime minister addressed the nation from downing street, also paying tribute to the work of the emergency services. on behalf of the people of london and the whole country, i want to thank and pay tribute to the professionalism and bravery of the police and the emergency services, and to the courage of members of the public who defended themselves and others from the attackers. and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, and with their friends, families and loved ones.
9:05 pm
but mrs may was notjust reflecting a nation‘s shock — she promised the outrage would be met by a response. it is time to say, enough is enough. everybody needs to go about their lives as they normally would. our society should continue to function in accordance with our values. but when it comes to taking on extremism and terrorism, things need to change. london is still trying to come to terms with the awful events, to understand what happened. this was an appalling act of terror, where innocent londoners and visitors were enjoying a night out in london bridge and borough market, and were deliberately targeted by these cowardly terrorists. barricaded in bars and restaurants for two hours or more, police finally let people leave for home in the early hours, hands on their heads just in case an attacker was still among them. i just want people to know this
9:06 pm
is not what london is like, we are a strong, welcome, caring city, and this is a terrible thing to happen, but it won‘t stop us living our lives, really. london bridge is falling down, the song goes — but london appears determined to stand up to those who would divide it. let‘s bring you the latest on the investigation in the wake of the terror attacks here that have left seven people dead and there have been a large number of arrests at barking in east london and our correspondent is there with the latest on that. a police cordon is still in place here on king ‘s road in barking just a few streets down from the centre of barking, where a
9:07 pm
major police raid took place little bit earlier on this morning. it is a slightly reduced cord and now to allow traffic down the king ‘s road but officers are barricading that door, making sure they know who is coming in and out at all times. we know from neighbours that some of them were not allowed in throughout today until about seven o‘clock tonight. they have now been allowed tonight. they have now been allowed to return there, but talking to some of those that live here today, several say they do believe that one of those attackers last night was a man that lived in this ground floor flat today that has been so much looked at by police. they say that because they have seen pictures of that man that have been widely circulated around the media today and they say they believe, not 100% guaranteed, but they believe that is
9:08 pm
the person that lived here. one man says he is quite shaken up because his young son was a playmate of the child of that young man. that has not been confirmed by police, but this has been a focus for police today. today just after 7am, neighbours reported hearing a loud bangs. that may have been stun grenades. as police entered this ground floor flat. we grenades. as police entered this ground floorflat. we know grenades. as police entered this ground floor flat. we know several people were brought out, for men and one woman. there was a police operation going on in front of this building, they were then taken away by police. another woman was taken away by stretcher and further people we re away by stretcher and further people were brought out, a couple of hours later, around 11 o‘clock this morning and were also taken away by police. we know there have been 12 arrests in the parking area, but we
9:09 pm
do know is how many of those were at this flat today. police say they have carried out multiple searches at different properties in barking. what is clear is that around the side of this building, a tent has been put up to block the view towards that ground floor flat. it looks like there will be some extensive forensic work going on there for some time. thank you very much indeed. the attack here at borough market and london bridge coming less than a fortnight after the deadly bomb attack at the manchester arena which left 22 people killed. tonight, a concert by ariana grande and other pop stars is continuing. it has been going on for a couple of hours at the old trafford cricket ground. anita is there with the latest for us. we
9:10 pm
have just heard justin bieber on stage. he hasjust have just heard justin bieber on stage. he has just finished have just heard justin bieber on stage. he hasjust finished the have just heard justin bieber on stage. he has just finished the two songs he was performing here tonight. ear—splitting screams when he came on. plenty of fans in the audience here. ariana grande isjust back on the stage at the moment. going back to justin back on the stage at the moment. going back tojustin bieber, he had the crowd clapped their hands and shout, love over and over again and before him katy perry was on stage. she got everyone in the audience to hug the person next to them, there we re hug the person next to them, there were group hugs going on and i could just see the bit to my left police officers, security staff, concertgoers joining officers, security staff, concertgoersjoining hands, officers, security staff, concertgoers joining hands, holding hands ina concertgoers joining hands, holding hands in a huge circle and dancing together for a hands in a huge circle and dancing togetherfor a fume hands in a huge circle and dancing together for a fume moment. hands in a huge circle and dancing togetherfor a fume moment. the atmosphere here is absolutely wonderful. it is music with a
9:11 pm
message. it is music as a healer as well. i was talking to our entertainment correspondent colin paterson who had spoken to a little girl who had been at the manchester arena concert, had suffered panic attacks ever since and he spotted her in the audience, clapping, dancing, having a wonderful time. this concert is about many things tonight. it is about being a benefit, raising money for those affected by the manchester arena bombing, it is about remembering those who died, it is about acting in solidarity with the survivors. it is also about celebrating music and sending this message of defiance, yet also normality. people doing what they want to and carrying on
9:12 pm
evenin what they want to and carrying on even in the face of the horrendous suicide bombing in manchester two weeks ago and the horrendous attacks in london last might. ariana grande‘s manager and her production tea m grande‘s manager and her production team who have been behind, polling together these stellar acts in just a couple of weeks for this performance tonight, ariana grande‘s manager the stage and said that the bravery of manchester gives us hope andi bravery of manchester gives us hope and i think that is the overriding message from today, from this evening, from this concert. giving people hope, happiness and telling them that they can carry on even if it was a big decision to make to be here tonight, that they can go on and do things they would like to do. justin bieber was on the stage a few
9:13 pm
minutes ago and let‘s listen to a bit of him. what an amazing thing we're doing tonight, would you not agree? would you agree that love always wins? what a better way to fight evil with evil than to fight evil with good. with you guys agree with that? we are expecting coldplay. i can just with that? we are expecting coldplay. i canjust see with that? we are expecting coldplay. i can just see them backstage. we are expecting them on the stage injust backstage. we are expecting them on the stage in just a couple of moments and then their readers a slot in the order of performances tonight with no name, but we are told it will be an act from manchester. we are waiting to see who that is but i think their risk of play, that mystery act and then ariana grande to round off this concert, keeping her promise to come
9:14 pm
back and perform for her young fans. just looking over my shoulder, i think we are about to hear from coldplay. i think there is a video being shown at the moment. we have had various people sent messages on video, stevie wonder was one. david beckham was another and lots of the axe tonight adapting their songs in some way for this manchester audience and many of those songs sounding particularly poignant tonight, like robbie williams‘s angels and where is the love from the black eyed peas. we heard from a local high school harmony choir singing with arianna grande, with the biggest performance of their lives. what a night for them. at the
9:15 pm
front of the crowd we have the people who were in the arena two weeks ago and many of them have made that decision to come back today. i was talking to some of them earlier and for some it was the most natural thing in the world to do. for many it has been a long deliberation about whether they should be here tonight. but once people got here, they felt and they looked very calm amongst that tight security presence outside the old trafford cricket ground and! outside the old trafford cricket ground and i am sure when people leave here tonight, we will hear that they have had an absolutely wonderful evening, right from the start with take that and robbie williams who got them singing at the tops of their forces. from the beginning of this concert, it was
9:16 pm
clear this was a special event, one that was hugely appreciated by the people here tonight. and probably many thousands of others watching it at home as well. and i have just got at home as well. and i have just got a glimpse of chris martin on the stage. a roar of anticipation from the crowd. we have heard a lot of really big hits from the performers here tonight. and there they are coming out towards the audience. perhaps we can just listen for a moment. we all want to say thank you to you for being so strong and so wonderful. you have been singing a lot for us so i think we in britain
9:17 pm
wa nt lot for us so i think we in britain want to sing for you. this is called don't look back in anger and this is from us to you. # and so, sally can wait # she knows it's too late as we're walking on by # her soul slides away # but don't look back in anger # i heard you say # take me to the place where you go

performing a manchester classic by way sis. the crowd singing along, waving their mobile phones in the airand it is waving their mobile phones in the air and it is quite a picture as we look across the crowd here this evening. at the one love manchester concert. as the sky starts to darken here tonight, we are nearly about not quite at the end of this concert. the crowd now holding their mobile phones aloft, the lights switched on. let‘s listen. # but don't look back in anger # i heard you say
9:20 pm
cheering ladies and gentlemen, coldplay! that was a spine tingling moment from coldplay and ariana grande singing the oasis song don‘t look backin singing the oasis song don‘t look back in anger. which i‘m sure you will remember was song here when manchester city centre, the day
9:21 pm
after the manchester arena tack. there was a minute‘s silence for the victims and then someone spontaneously started to sing don‘t look back in anger. so many of the songs, the performances here tonight having an added poignancy in the light of the events of the last two weeks. so coldplay continuing with their performance. and the manager, ariana grande‘s manager speaking to the crowd earlier said, the bravery of manchester gives us hope. this is a perfect example of how people can unite to send a really clear
9:22 pm
message. while at the same time enjoying themselves on an evening such as this. it is this sort of unity that they may of manchester, andy burnham, said has to be used to positive effect. this unity has to be used to bring communities together, to try to foster the sort of relationships and work that will help to prevent future attacks. let‘s listen to coldplay again. # when you're too in love to let it go
9:23 pm
# if you never try you'll never know # just what you're worth # lights will guide you home i will try to fix you, the lyrics meaning so much to the people here tonight, as the crowd joins with chris martin and coldplay in singing. their voices have been loud and clear all through the evening. both from those more are beat, pop,

happy songs through to the mellow songs, the more emotional songs. their voices have been loud and clear a ll their voices have been loud and clear all the way through. what a moment. it is thought that this concept could add £2 million to the emergency fund that has been set up the emergency fund that has been set up in aid of the victims of the manchester arena attack. and hopefully, especially for those people who are in the manchester
9:25 pm
arena two weeks ago, it will create very happy memories for them. there isa very happy memories for them. there is a huge security operation and has been there all day. it will be there as they exit the old trafford cricket ground, but some very happy people will be going home from here from this one love manchester event. asi from this one love manchester event. as i hand back to ben, let‘s listen to coldplay. # lights will guide you home a really extraordinary concert there in manchester, manchester and london

now united in their grief after these two terror attacks in the space of these two terror attacks in the s pa ce of less these two terror attacks in the space of less than a fortnight, grief, anger, defiance, a whole range of emotions. you can see behind me a lot of police officers just outside borough market and london bridge. almost 24 hours ago, i was here after the attacks. it was chaotic last night that much calmer now, huge police investigating now and a massive forensic investigation underway as well. i am joined by two guests here are borough high street. thank you very much for being with us. your thoughts in the wake of another devastating terror attack,
9:27 pm
the third in three months on uk soil. shock horror. at the brutality of what we witnessed yesterday evening and a condolences go out to those who lost their lives and the emergency services who responded so quickly in bringing the situation under control. theresa may has been saying enough is enough, there needs to bea saying enough is enough, there needs to be a rethink of counterterror strategy in this country, do you agree with that? completely agree. we really need to pause and think about how we move forward with all of these challenges we face on a regular basis. this year really brings it home. it has been called previously in legislation. charlie winter, what is your view? it is very easy to talk about social media
9:28 pm
being a big problem, but we need to get beyond platitudes. they need to get beyond platitudes. they need to get extremism of the internet. that will not happen. extremists are very flexible and will adapt to new circumstances so it is something we need to accept and get better at understanding. that is what we need to do understanding. that is what we need todoa understanding. that is what we need to do a lot more of. but how do we stop radicalisation of young muslim men? we need to get back understanding. we talk about islamic state but we need to figure out what message they are sending back in can convince people to carry out attacks like this. do you agree with that, it isa like this. do you agree with that, it is a question of understanding? on the ground, charlie is right about the online monitoring of hate and social media is a real challenge. to be honest, from
9:29 pm
muslims, they are not injune with it, so it is a very small fringe element of people following these trends. we were just talking to a young muslim man who came and lay flowers said. he was saying muslims are angry about what had happened here and said more muslims need to come out and talk to the media and express their anger. do you agree with that? to some extent. i am here tonight, expressing anger. i am a born and bred londoner. it could have been anybody. this was an attack on me and my city. everyone should be out here protesting against this barbarism. charlie winter, we a lot about the government‘s prevent strategy and a lot of controversy over that, people say it does not work, what is your view on that? i think it would be
9:30 pm
useful to have a review on it. it would not have happened this time a few years ago. with groups like islamic state, they need to incite more terrorist attacks than they have done before. the state of play has changed. we need to adapt and recalibrate better to fighting this situation. how do you see prevent? we know it is unpopular with many young muslims, partly because it is a state—sponsored strategy. young muslims, partly because it is a state—sponsored strategym young muslims, partly because it is a state-sponsored strategy. it is not just young muslims, a state-sponsored strategy. it is notjust young muslims, lots of academic studies and teachers have an independent review of prevent. if
9:31 pm
the prime minister reviews prevent, that would be very welcome. one of the fears is that when you have these terror attacks come they breed other terror attacks. people are inspired when they see something like the westminster attack with the manchester attack. is that how you seeit? manchester attack. is that how you see it? it does have a big impact, a contagion effect. this is where the media have a big responsibility in order not to report responsibly and not to sensationalise it. i have seen newspapers with re—alarmist headlines which exactly play into the hands of terrorist organisations. it is really crucial but when something like this happens, we think about why it is happening and what the objectives of the people who carried out the attacks are. they want to polarise
9:32 pm
society, they want to turn people against each other, and it is so important to have that discussion and conversation going and that is where the media has an important role. people are saying this is the new normal, this is something we have to learn to live with. we have seen these terror attacks and lots of other european cities. and we just have to get used to it, is that how you see it? this is not normal. this kind of environment and situation is not normalfor any society and should not be. we should be out there challenging, in whatever means we can, this threat from so—called islamic state. weather it is through communities, government, whoever it is, it needs to be challenged. this is not the kind of like we want to live in our
9:33 pm
cities. very good to get both of your thoughts. we will go straight back to manchester now and that concert to raise money for the victims of the manchester attack under a fortnight ago. you join us as coldplay continue their set of songs on the stage. a really euphoric mood. we are moving towards the end of the one love manchester concert now with a mystery guest still to come. there isa mystery guest still to come. there is a slot in the order of performances. i am is a slot in the order of performances. iam not is a slot in the order of performances. i am not sure we can
9:34 pm
reveal who that is yet, but we are told, and here is a big clue, there are told, and here is a big clue, there a re close told, and here is a big clue, there are close links to manchester. with me again, our entertainment correspondent. huge response for coldplay. singing don‘t look back in anger but ariana grande, one of the standout performances. that song has become a sum of unity. when you go to bars, it is plain, when you go to gigs. to bars, it is plain, when you go to gigs, people are singing it between songs. we wondered who would do it tonight. it was coldplayjoined by ariana grande. i'm not entirely convinced she heard the song before sound check! but she joined in with the crowd. 50,000 people belting out don't look back in anger. . they
9:35 pm
have been belting out those songs. right from the start with take that, robbie williams, totally engaged with the crowd. robbie williams adapting the lyrics of his song, huge singalong to take that, justin bieber got a really great response, coming on withjust bieber got a really great response, coming on with just a guitar, bieber got a really great response, coming on withjust a guitar, big excitement when he was on.“ splitting screams! it has been quite an emotional night as well. ariana grande in particular talking about meeting olivia campbell's mother, one of the people who died at her concert, and she said how chatting to her mum said, what kind of gig would libya have wanted? her mum said, she would have wanted you to play your hits. she said she changed her set list to reflect her fan's
9:36 pm
wishes. you definitely know that this is ariana grande's concert. she will be back again, i am sure.” think she feels she owes something to the city. she wants to give something back to the people who we re something back to the people who were at her concert two weeks ago, to manchester. these acts, justin bieber, katy perry, pharrell williams, they have all played their own headline shows that manchester arena. they all have this connection. it is personal to them. when word came through to america that this attack had happened, they we re that this attack had happened, they were able to picture exactly where it happened. and you can tell how much it has meant to them. nearly all of the acts have given some kind of speech about not to be frightened, be strong. justin bieber in particular gave a speech, stay strong. if our personal.” in particular gave a speech, stay strong. if our personal. i was talking earlier about music with a message, music as a healer. if you
9:37 pm
think of gigs that have happened, you think of live aid, which is therefore any of ariana grande‘s plans were born, many of the people in the audience were not born at that point, you look at events like this tonight, put that in context for us. there has not been an enormous charity gig for decades that there were two in a week, the concert for diana, the tenth anniversary of the death of princess diana, organised by the princess, and in six days later, they had a fundraiserand and in six days later, they had a fundraiser and awareness concert about change. that was headlined by madonna. i think we have to pose. let‘s see how this is. madonna. i think we have to pose. let's see how this is. it is liam gallagher! # they're not concerned

them being treated in hospital. i wa nt to them being treated in hospital. i want to show you scenes from berlin. this is the brandenburg gate. the gate has been lit up in the colours of the union flag as a jester or international solidarity from the german people for the people of london after this latest terror attack. bellerin suffered its own terror attack not long ago. other european capitals and cities, paris, nice, but in britain, we have had three terror attacks in three months, the westminster attack, the manchester attack less than two weeks ago and now this attack in london bridge and borough market. leaders from around the world expressed their horror at the attacks. those from germany, france and russia sent messages of condolences and issued statements of solidarity. our diplomatic correspondent, james landale, reports now on the global reaction. this attack may have been targeted on the people of london, but the threat of terrorism is global, and world leaders
9:43 pm
were quick to express their now familiar remarks of solidarity. from around the globe, they took to social media to express their horror and sympathy. president putin of russia spoke of the cruelty and cynicism of the attack. and chancellor merkel said that, in the fight against terrorism, germany is resolutely at britain‘s side. in rome, the pope led prayers for peace that were echoed by other christian leaders. translation: may the spirit give peace to the entire world, heal the plagues of war and of terrorism that even tonight, in london, hit innocent civilians. let‘s pray for the victims and their families. it is right that, when there is great evil, that we feel anger, but that anger must be turned on...its head, into a commitment tojustice, and not against any group of people, especially members of the islamic community. they have not done this,
9:44 pm
we must stand forjustice and peace, and in unity — it is division that the terrorists want. in new york, the authorities increased security across the city, particularly in areas full of pedestrians and tourists, like here in times square. overnight, donald trump called theresa may to offer his condolences. but on twitter, the president used the incident to renew his demand for a travel ban on visitors from six mostly muslim countries. and he also appeared to criticise the mayor of london, sadiq khan, for saying there was no need to be alarmed. in fact, mr khan was urging people not to be worried by the increased police presence on london‘s river and its streets. his spokesman said he had more important things to do than respond to mr trump‘s ill—informed tweet. from paris, which has seen its share of terror attacks, president macron called theresa may to say that france was at britain‘s side. but he also reminded her of the importance
9:45 pm
of european co—operation in the fight against terrorism. france‘s prime minister visited a crisis centre monitoring events for french citizens caught up in the attack. la france et le royaume—uni... translation: france and the united kingdom are allies that have been subjected to a common threat, and we will be united in ourjoint response to it. france is holding its own parliamentary elections at the moment and, as a result of last night‘s attack, security has been tightened up here in london at polling stations where french nationals living in the uk are already casting their votes. few elections, it seems, can escape the shadow of terrorism. we have been talking to witnesses who saw and heard what happened last night 24 hours ago, the horrendous
9:46 pm
atrocities that unfolded at london bridge and borough market. one of those described what happened to my colleague. we had a friend overfrom sydney. and we happened to be sitting at a table nearest the door, and it suddenly became clear the security from borough market were saying, "close the door, lock it down, duck and cover," and this young guy from the restaurant put his foot in the door and held it closed, people understandably panicked, got to the back of the restaurant, ducked, turned over tables, there was food flying everywhere, and people didn‘t need to be told twice that they needed to put themselves first and look after themselves. i looked up and looked over, and could see this guy throwing a table, we didn‘t know what that was about, but it turned out it was a wonderfully heroic guy who put his life before ours, which is remarkable. our lives before his, sorry... he was throwing the table at someone he thought was an attacker? yes, that is what it turned out to be. a few minutes later, i looked up and someone was coming out

of the restaurant next door covered in blood, holding their chest or neck, going out and meandering through, and i hope they got the paramedic support that they clearly desperately needed, and i hope that person is not one of the people that you mentioned previously. could you or yourfriends have any sense of what had happened to that person? what was going through your mind at that point? you could hear screams. the security had said, "there is an incident, lock yourself in". people were panicking. to be honest, me and my friend were calm when other people were panicking, firstly trying to get people to go upstairs so they were a bit safer, to stop people panicking and going out through the fire escape — going out into an unknown was the worst thing at that time, so we kept people in. we had a pregnant lady with us who needed a seat and water, and probably more calm than we could have provided, but we tried to look out for her. we saw the police arrive almost immediately, they did a sweep of the area, gunshots went off, which was worrying, more sweeps of the area and gunshots went off. by this point, they had people
9:48 pm
outside each of the restaurants, they were trying to communicate through this tiny little window. we tried to piece together from social media what was happening on the bridge, but we were clearly in the middle of something maybe related but clearly quite different as well. you say you think you and your friend stayed pretty calm? she did most of it, to be fair. she was phenomenal, she got them turning off all the hobs, getting the candles down. she was great. were you not frightened? the more you think about it, the more you were. the bit for me when i realised was when we were coming out and we were meandering around people‘s shoes that had fallen off, blood, people had dropped their wallets and whatever, we got to just this area, actually, that was where we were safe and suddenly they moved the cordon because we were not safe,
9:49 pm
i want to show you the flowers that have been left. there are many floral tributes left around the police cordon, around the whole area of london bridge and borough market. one floral tribute under, a note says, we have lived in this area for over 50 yea rs says, we have lived in this area for over 50 years and we are so saddened by the events of last night and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. you thoughts and prayers are with the victims and theirfamilies. you can see some of those posters stuck to the walls, isis will lose. evil losers. those are some of the m essa g es losers. those are some of the messages left here. defiance, grief, whole mixture of emotions, anger as well, we saw some young muslims who came here and lay flowers and they we re came here and lay flowers and they were saying they believe the muslim community needs to do more to speak out against this sort of act of terror. meanwhile, in manchester,

for the survivors of the manchester arena attack. in remembrance of the people who died that night. and it has been music with a message, and incredibly powerful message. one love manchester. from here, it is back to you. huge emotion there in manchester, and a lot of emotion here in central london, close to borough market and london, close to borough market and london bridge where the attacks happened just about 24 hours ago. you can see some of the armed police who are on the street behind me. down here to my left, some of the floral tributes. people have been coming all through the day to leave flowers a nd coming all through the day to leave flowers and messages in memory of those who have lost their lives. seven people who have died, 48 were

injured in the attack. 12 arrests have been made today by police in east london. let‘s get more now on the terror attacks in london. tonight, the latest on the terror attack at london bridge, where seven people were killed last night and dozens injured. keep moving! it happened in an area packed with thousands of people at bars and restaurants in nearby borough market. a white van had been driven into pedestrians before three men jumped out, armed with knives, stabbing people in their path. when i first saw them, they shouted, this is for allah! then they start a girl ten or 15 times. i could not do nothing. there was widespread panic as police ordered people to take cover as the attackers were still at large. others fled the area as the sound of loud gunfire filled the air during the rapid response by police.
10:03 pm
within eight minutes of the initial alert the three attackers, all wearing fake suicide vests, had been shot dead by armed police. emergency services say that 48 were injured, some of them critically, as friends and families have spoken of those affected. hejust stepped outside he just stepped outside the bar for a second and a man ran up to him and said, this is for my family, this is for islam, and stuck a knife straight in him. in downing street, the prime minister condemned the "evil ideology of islamist extremism" and called for a new approach. there is, to be frank, far too much tolerance of extremism in our country, so we need to become far more robust in identifying it and stamping it out across the public sector, and across society. our

priority must be public safety. i will take whatever action is necessary and effective to protect the security of our people and our country. during the day in barking in east london several homes were raided and 12 arrests were made. and this is the scene tonight close to london bridge. we‘ll have the latest details, analysis and reaction in britain and around the world. good evening from central london. we‘re in the area just south of london bridge where, this time last night, seven people were killed and dozens injured in a terrorist attack carried out by three men, who were shot dead by police within minutes of the attack taking place.
10:05 pm
it was britain‘s second major terrorist incident in the space of 12 days. it began just after 10 o‘clock last night, when a rented van was used to knock down pedestrians on london bridge. three men wearing fake suicide vests then left the vehicle and began stabbing people in pubs and bars in nearby borough market. within just eight minutes, the three men had been confronted and shot dead by police. a member of the public was also injured in the exchanges. during the day, 12 people were arrested in barking in east london following a series of raids. and the prime minister, speaking in downing street, called for a new approach to combat the "single evil ideology of islamist extremism". in this extended programme we‘ll have full details, reaction and analysis. and we start with our home editor mark easton, whose report does include some distressing images. clear the area now!
10:06 pm
and a country cried — please not again. we are hearing tonight that british armed police have attended an incident at london bridge, we don't know anything more at this stage... atjust after ten last night, three men in a white van drove at speed across london bridge, determined to kill the spirit of the capital. oh, my god. a white van came speeding, 50 mph, it turned into the pavement, hit about three people in front of me. oh, my god! there was people just lying everywhere on the bridge, just people trying to help each other out, people bleeding, there wasjust blood everywhere. having deliberately mown down pedestrians, the three men got out of the van,
10:07 pm
knives in their hands, murder on their minds. he went and up and started stabbing this girl, i couldn't do nothing, mate. they attacked her, and they stabbed another guy, they went up the road, i started going, "everybody run, terrorists, " they were stabbing everyone. hejust stabbed this person — if they got up, stabbed them again, move onto the next person. i was staring at them from the balcony, just thinking, how could someone do such a thing? armed police were on the scene within minutes, as the three men moved towards the bars and restaurants of borough market, packed with people on a warm summer‘s night. they were running in allthe pubs and bars, stabbing people, i was going,
10:08 pm
"run, run!" i was throwing things at them, pint glasses... people were throwing chairs, it seemed like chairs and glasses were going in both directions. these four friends were settling down for a meal in a mexican restaurant when the three knifemen arrived. three men came in, one pulled out a knife and stabbed one of the girls sitting closest to the door, i think she was only 17. i got a glimpse of a guy with a knife, and before i knew it the doors were shut, we were at the back of the restaurant. so you saw him? briefly, a glimpse. people were very scared, they began to run, knocking tables over to try to get out the way, and then very quickly, as we said, the men in the restaurant put the shutters down. in the early hours of this morning, claudia and liam, given refuge in a stranger‘s flat, told me what they saw from their apartmentjust above a pub the attackers had targeted on their killing spree.
10:09 pm
we looked out the window, people were running everywhere, we heard that there had beena stabbing... it was when i saw lots of people running down into the underground that i thought it was more serious, because it was mass panic, notjust a fight, it was something serious. one young guy seemed to come out of the pub, and he was knocking on the window of the ambulance, saying, "you have to help my friend, he‘s been stabbed, "he is in the pub..." whether that was inside or outside, i don‘t know, but he said "my friend‘s been stabbed." there was another guy, probably in his 40s, on the other side of the ambulance, knocking on the other window, saying, "i‘ve been stabbed", and he was covered in blood, he said, "i‘ve been stabbed five times, help me." he must have been in shock, because he seemed very calm. he had his shirt open, all this side was pure blood, it was just around his neck. he was knocking on the window saying, "you have to help me." at this time, police cars were still heading to london bridge, apparently unaware of where the attackers were.
10:10 pm
this one guy walked out in the road, managed to grab the attention of one of the police cars and basically forced them down that road, saying, "you have to go down there, he‘s down there," and so this one police 4x4 screeched down stoney street, and then easily within five seconds there were six gunshots, or what sounded like six clear gunshots. gunfire. six rounds, two attackers dead. within eight minutes of the first call to police, the third knifeman had also been shot dead. 50 rounds fired altogether. one member of the public suffered a gunshot wound. it seemed like a big attack was happening, so we wanted to keep the door locked. so i wasjust having a... must have been terrifying. it was terrifying — i was having a mental battle between either the idea
10:11 pm
of an explosion coming through the floor, or us being on the street, which one do we do? so i shouted down and said, "what should we do?" one of the police officers said, "you have to get out "of the building now." it was an attack not just on individuals but on our way of life — the killers targeted people having fun, enjoying the freedoms of a diverse and liberal city. with daybreak, tales of bravery and heroism emerged from the horrors of the previous night. i heard truly remarkable stories of extraordinarily brave actions by officers on and off duty, who were first on the scene. i also heard of colleagues from other emergency services, and members of the public who ran towards the danger as this incident unfolded. many, many people risked their own safety to help others, and to treat those seriously injured, and indeed to confront
10:12 pm
the suspects involved. the prime minister addressed the nation from downing street, paying tribute to the work of the emergency services. on behalf of the people of london and the whole country, i want to thank and pay tribute to the professionalism and bravery of the police and the emergency services, and to the courage of members of the public who defended themselves and others from the attackers. and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, and with their friends, families and loved ones. but mrs may was notjust reflecting a nation‘s shock — she promised the outrage would be met by a response. it is time to say, enough is enough. everybody needs to go about their lives as they normally would. our society should continue to function in accordance with our values. but when it comes to taking
10:13 pm
on extremism and terrorism, things need to change. london is still trying to come to terms with the awful events, to understand what happened. this was an appalling act of terror, where innocent londoners and visitors were enjoying a night out in london bridge and borough market, and were deliberately targeted by these cowardly terrorists. barricaded in bars and restaurants for two hours or more, police finally let people leave for home in the early hours, hands on their heads just in case an attacker was still among them. the armed police came in, and that was really scary. i don‘t know what i expected when they opened the door, but they shouted to us to put our hands on our heads and to leave. we had to keep our hands visible. ijust want people to know this is not what london is like, we are a strong, welcome,
10:14 pm
caring city, and this is a terrible thing to happen, but it won't stop us living our lives, really. london bridge is falling down, the song goes — but london appears determined to stand up to those who would divide it. one of those who witnessed the violent and distressing scenes last night on london bridge was hollyjones, a bbcjournalist. she‘s been describing how she narrowly missed being hit by the van as it struck other pedestrians around her. holly has been giving her account to our special correspondent lucy manning. a walk across a bridge, but some didn‘t make it to the other side. before the police, the ambulance. there were tourists taking photos, couples holding hands, and hollyjones crossing the bridge, late to meet friends for a drink. today, the sun, the park — people smiling.
10:15 pm
things she thought she would never see. the van was zigzagging along the pavement, and it looked like it was aiming, from my opinion, for groups of people. he hit two people in front of me that were about five metres in front, swerved back round again. i don‘t know how i did it or what i did, but i got out the way — i don‘t know if ijumped or if i ran — and i remember moving and watching the van drive into the couple that were behind me, and obviously hit them. you know, ijust remember thinking that was so close, that was so close for me. and the screams, it was like a shrill. i have never heard kind of like a fear like it, but even so, i just ran towards the victims. the lady who was behind me was the closest person, so naturally ijust ran to her, told her i spoke french, asked her if she spoke english,
10:16 pm
she said she didn‘t, ijust kept telling her everything was ok, i was holding her hand, and because i realised the person was not with her, she kept asking, where‘s my boyfriend ? i just shouted at the pedestrian next to me, who wasn‘t injured, i said, look over the river, can you see anyone in the water? and at that point, that‘s when she started shouting to alert the boats to say, there might be someone in there. your first thought was to help, it wasn‘t to run away and get out of there? i did what anyone else would have done in my situation. i almost feel quite fortunate that i was with that lady, because there were several other casualties on the bridge who were... it‘s indescribable, the state they were in. you never think you‘re going to see something like that. you ok? yeah. must have been really, really tough to see. it was, but as i say,
10:17 pm
i‘m just so incredibly lucky. so, so incredibly lucky. i am just glad that i was... i‘m glad i was there to help people. i‘m just glad that i could have... i am happy that i was there to help, and just try and stay as calm and professional and just get on with things. holly was one of the first to call 999, and the police have interviewed her as a significant witness. when you saw the driver, you looked into the driver‘s eyes. yep. i saw the driver of the vehicle, and definitely intentional, he didn‘t look scared, just focused, and i‘d almost like to say the word "demented", that‘s what he looked like, and at this point, that was when he was heading straight towards me. and how do you feel, being in london now, given what you‘ve experienced last night? i plead with people not to be scared, not to be angry, because this is exactly what those people want us to feel.
10:18 pm
and we have to stand together — go home, tell yourfriends and family you love them, and carry on doing exactly what you are doing. you‘ve obviously had just the luckiest escape. yeah. how do you feel, thinking back to those events last night? i am just so grateful and thankful for everything i have. just so, so lucky, you know? it was one metre away. and i‘m just so grateful, so thankful. i‘ll never take my life for granted. hollyjones there. four police officers were among those injured in the course of the attack. one was off duty, and was stabbed as he struggled with one of the attackers. another was a british transport police officer who, despite being unarmed, confronted one of the suspects. it‘s been confirmed that
10:19 pm
people from france, spain, australia and new zealand are also among those injured. tonight, the first victim has been named as christine archibald who was from canada. our correspondent sarah campbell reports on the people caught up in last night‘s attack. daniel o‘neill, who‘s 23, is recovering in hospital, one of the many pub and restaurant—goers attacked at random. the shock and anger is palpable from his mother. he‘d just stepped outside the barfor a second, and a man ran up to him and said, "this is for my family, this is for islam," and stuck a knife straight in him. he‘s got a seven—inch scar going from his belly round to his back. i‘m still in shock, i still can‘t quite believe it‘s happened. absolutely senseless, the attacks. and these people say they‘re doing it in the name of god, which is an absolute joke. the first commandment is "thou shalt not kill." all faiths share that belief.
10:20 pm
if it wasn‘t religion, they‘d find some other excuse. they‘re callous, they‘re barbaric. and they‘re absolute cowards. there are many more victims. brett freeman, a father of three, was stabbed three times. geoff ho is currently in intensive care after being stabbed in the neck. he tried to help a wounded bouncer. that is him all over. that is the frightening thing with him, he focuses on other people. he loves other people, and if he can help, he will help. initially, the injured were taken to five different hospitals across london, including here at st thomas‘s. this is a cosmopolitan city, and that‘s very much reflected in the nationalities of those who found themselves caught up in last night‘s attack. it is now known that a french

citizen was killed, and a canadian woman known as christine archibald. herfamily search woman known as christine archibald. her family search would have known no understanding of the callous cruelty that caused her death. new zealander oliver dowling, according to a facebook post by his sister, has been operated on after being stabbed multiple times. australian candice hedge, who reportedly worked in a local restaurant, was having a meal with her boyfriend when she was attacked. also injured, four police officers — one from the british transport police, and three from the metropolitan police force. one of the met officers, who was off duty at the time, tackled one of the armed men, and remains in a serious condition. the emergency services have been praised for the quick response, both during the attack and in the aftermath when so many lay injured. people feel tremendous sympathy with the victims. it could not have been foreseen, and clearly the patients we re foreseen, and clearly the patients were extremely shocked in the

non—medical sense. were extremely shocked in the non-medical sense. this 19-year-old american student fountain self desperately trying to help stem the flow of blood from a man who was hit in the head by a stray bullet. we knew we had to stop this overwhelming rush of blood from the wound. we knew that we need to apply pressure onto it to stop it at least a little bit, and that is when we took off my belt and used it as a tourniquet to stop the flow of blood. for you surprised to hear he had survived? i was, blood. for you surprised to hear he had survived? iwas, i could blood. for you surprised to hear he had survived? i was, i could not sleep last night wondering whether he made it. to find out that he did isa he made it. to find out that he did is a huge relief. the list of the victims injured or killed in the attack will grow longer, each one an innocent victim. the latest information is that 48 people were injured in last night‘s attack on london bridge and in borough market, 21 of them sustained serious injuries and they‘re being treated

at several hospitals in the london area. our health editor hugh pym is at kings college hospital in south london. can you give us the latest on the figures for the injured you have?m those 48 taken to hospital, 36 are still there, including some here at kings college hospital. 21 are in critical care, some very seriously injured. and the hospital with the largest number of people is this one. a short time ago theresa may paid a visit. this hospital is part ofa paid a visit. this hospital is part of a major trauma network. they know their precise roles in this situation. they have well rehearsed plans for this scenario that unfolded last night. the london ambulance service knows precisely

where to take casualties too. that is what happened last night. the london ambulance service very quickly on the scene. six minutes the first paramedics took to get there. that all went entirely according to plan. hospitals have major incident plans to bring in extra staff overnight. they did not know how many casualties they had to deal with but brought in extra doctors and nurses that went according to plan as well. the head of nhs england said he paid tribute to the professionalism of staff and their bravery as they move towards danger as they went about their business of tending to patients. as we mentioned earlier, police raided several properties in barking in east london and arrested 12 people in connection with last night‘s attack. one of the homes raided is believed to be where one of the attackers lived.
10:25 pm
our special correspondent ed thomas has the latest on the extensive police investigation. tonight, the focus of the police investigation — a block of flats in barking. women escorted from the building. these pictures were taken by those living inside. armed police surround them, lying on the floor with their hands behind their backs. so far, 12 people have been arrested. the bbc also understands one of the london attackers who died had lived here. we are not naming him at the request of the police, who say it could jeopardise their investigation. but we‘ve spoken to this man, who knew him. he says over the past two years the attacker became more and more extreme. we spoke about a particular attack that happened. like most radicals, he had a justification for everything. for everything and anything. and that day i realised that i need to contact the authorities. this man would only speak to the bbc‘s asian network
10:26 pm
if we protected his identity and changed his voice. he used to listen to a lot of musa jibril. i‘ve heard this stuff, and it‘s very radical. i‘m surprised some of this stuff is still on youtube and easily accessible. i phoned the anti—terrorist hotline. i spoke to the gentleman, i told him about our conversation and why i think he‘s been radicalised. the friend also claims the alleged attacker was not arrested after he was reported, and was allowed to keep his passport. i did my bit. i know a lot of people did, but the authorities didn‘t do their bit. this couple said they also reported the same man to the police more than two years ago after he tried to befriend their children. the message was clear. if you were not muslim, you were basically going to hell. he
10:27 pm
said to me, the kids need to be saved. saved from what? from this world. we still do not know if any chances to stop these men were missed. another focus is chances to stop these men were missed. anotherfocus is on chances to stop these men were missed. another focus is on a search for evidence and answers. this is not the heart of the investigation. it started with anti—terrorist laws after the attack and forensic teams are now focused on this ground floor flat on this block. and this east ham this evening. armed officers trained their guns at the windows. this investigation is farfrom over. our home affairs correspondent daniel sandford is at new scotland yard. what has been established so far? police made good progress today. they quickly identified the three
10:28 pm
main suspects, the three men they had already shot dead, that allowed them to get to barking to rate this two addresses in north—east london and arrested 12 people, seven women and arrested 12 people, seven women and five men, but one of those men has since been released. whether or not any of that group will be charged, iam not not any of that group will be charged, i am not so sure because they were known associates and family members the police got too quickly to question, but it may not ultimately lead to charges. we also learnt a lot about the new reality of police and counterterrorism last night. it took eight armed officers firing 50 rounds to prevent any further loss of life. it was an unprecedented use of aggressive force by police in this country, but that has its risks. a member of the public being shot and injured, though thankfully not seriously so. we mentioned the fact it is a

comprehensive and extensive inquiry at this stage. talk to us about the next few days and the scope of the investigation as we look ahead. we can expect more raids and more arrests in the next few hours. that is inevitable as police learn more about these men and try to expand their knowledge about them. but as we discussed, three times this year, was this a group of men who plotted alone or did they have a wider group of people that were assisting them here in the uk? or were they guided from overseas? at this stage, police are not sure about the answers to those questions. there is also an important other aspect to the days and weeks ahead, and that will be reassurance because, after three attacks in three months, there is a concern amongst police, security services and government that members of the palm black will panic and worry whether police and security

services are in control of the issue and they will reassure the public they are doing everything they can to prevent further loss of life and reduce further loss of life. —— members of the public. as we‘ve heard, this is the second terrorist attack in britain in under a fortnight, and the third in the space of three months. earlier today the prime minister spoke in downing street after the chairing the cabinet‘s emergency committee, and called for a new approach to tackle what she called the "single evil ideology of islamist extremism". our security correspondent frank gardner looks at the options within the intelligence community for tackling terrorism. march 22nd, westminster. a lone attacker uses a 4x4 and knives to murder pedestrians and a policeman. may 22nd, manchester arena. a suicide bomber kills 22 people,
10:31 pm
including children. june 3rd, london. terrorists killed seven and injured dozens using truck and knives. armed police have spent years training for exactly these sort of marauding attacks. they now have more powerful weapons, better intelligence and a faster reaction time than ever before. what they are up against is a growing problem. the country needs to wake up to the fact this is an increasing threat, both globally and within our midst, in our communities here in the uk. this increasing threat needs to be confronted head—on. it is notjust about resources for intelligence agencies and the police, we need to confront the ideology and theology driving death threats. also driving it is the imminent loss of the is self—proclaimed caliphate in syria and iraq. after two years, jihadists looks to be driven out of mosul and rack. they are calling for revenge attacks in europe.
10:32 pm
it says the west is damned byjihadists what ever it does. we are blamed by jihadists, like iraq. when we do not intervene, like in syria, we are blamed byjihadists for not caring about muslim lies. anything that is consistent is the identity crisis and the ideological narrative. that is something we can do something about. we need to foster the kind of society in which people feel they belong. the advice given by the metropolitan police to the public is blunt. in the event of a terrorist attack, they are telling people to run, tell and hide, at least until the threat is dealt with. the scale of the terrorist threat is daunting. 500 active plots under investigation and 3000 subject of interests being monitored. and a further 20,000 individuals in

the flag‘s at half mast — a mark of respect. for the same reason, another pause from most parties in the election campaign. the politicians did come out to universally condemn this attack and praise the emergency services, and from the prime minister, this time, there was much tougher talk on tackling terrorism, too. we cannot and must not pretend that things can continue as they are. theresa may called for countries around the world to act to stop internet firms allowing extremism online. there‘ll be a review of the uk‘s counterterrorism strategy and, she warned, across society, there was too much tolerance of extremism. while the recent attacks are not connected by common networks, they are connected in one important sense — they are bound together by the single, evil ideology of islamist extremism that preaches hatred, sows division

and promotes sectarianism. from here, it seems, an attempt to offer more than platitudes about the country‘s protection but, at this stage, still little tangible detail about what that means, not least for some muslim communities, who too have a sense of anger. muslim communities across the uk are outraged at what's happened. we've had three terror attacks in the last three months, and that's something that's intolerable for anyone who lives in this country. we want to work together with our government, with our civil society, to tackle terrorism wherever we find it. labour‘s answer criticising the conservatives. the party leader is keen to quash any perception he would be soft on terror. the police should use whatever force

are designed to do — to divide and to undermine the values that define who we are. this once again has become a balancing act between the need for security and action and the protection of civil liberties. what we must do is work together to make sure that we tackle terrorism in a very practical and effective way, and do it together. what we must not do is to trade away our freedoms, our great british freedoms, in response to the cowardly acts of these pathetic people last night. if we did that, they would have won. but today, in the fight against terrorism, any sense of victory feels far away, any answers hard to come by. one thing many here are holding onto — an attack designed to undermine democracy has only strengthened the will of those determined to protect it. live to downing street and our political editor,

injured in an attack carried out by three men. it was britain‘s second major incident in the space of 12 days. it began just after 10 o‘clock last night when a hired van was used to knock down pedestrians on london bridge. three men wearing fake suicide vests then left the vehicle and began stabbing people in pubs and bars in nearby borough market. within 8 minutes the three men had been confronted and shot dead by police. a member of the public was also injured in the exchanges. during the day 12 people were arrested in barking in east london following a series of raids. and the prime minister speaking in downing street called for a new approach to combat the "single evil ideology of islamist extremism". we start with our home editor mark easton, whose report does include some distressing images. clear the area now!

it was when i saw lots of people running down into the underground that i thought it was more serious, because it was mass panic, notjust a fight, it was something serious. one young guy seemed to come out of the pub, and he was knocking on the window of the ambulance, saying, "you have to help my friend, he's been stabbed, he is in the pub..." whether that was inside or outside, i don't know, but he said "my friend's been stabbed. " there was another guy, probably in his 40s, on the other side of the ambulance, knocking on the other window, saying "i've been stabbed", and he was covered in blood, he said, "i've been stabbed five times, help me." he must have been in shock, because he seemed very calm. he had his shirt open, all this side was pure blood, it was just around his neck. he was knocking on the window saying, "you have to help me." at this time, police cars were still heading to london bridge, apparently unaware of where the attackers were. this one guy walked out in the road,

the prime minister addressed the nation from downing street, also paying tribute to the work of the emergency services. on behalf of the people of london and the whole country, i want to thank and pay tribute to the professionalism and bravery of the police and the emergency services, and to the courage of members of the public who defended themselves and others from the attackers. and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, and with their friends, families and loved ones. but mrs may was notjust reflecting a nation‘s shock — she promised the outrage would be met by a response. it is time to say, enough is enough. everybody needs to go about their lives as they normally would. our society should continue to function in accordance with our values. but when it comes to taking on extremism and terrorism, things need to change.

london is still trying to come to terms with the awful events, to understand what happened. this was an appalling act of terror, where innocent londoners and visitors were enjoying a night out in london bridge and borough market, and were deliberately targeted by these cowardly terrorists. barricaded in bars and restaurants for two hours or more, police finally let people leave for home in the early hours, hands on their heads just in case an attacker was still among them. they were shouting, put your hands on your head, were visible. london bridge is falling down, as
