i should say there will be continuing coverage on the bbc news channel. huw edwards will be here with the ten o'clock news. you are watching special coverage on bbc news of last night's terror attacks in central london. we are at the police cordon and borough high street, close to borough market and london bridge, where the attacks unfolded last night, leaving seven people dead and 48 injured. we are hearing from the various hospitals where those injured are being taken. —— have been taken. 21 of them are in what is described as critical care. the police have been giving more details about their operations last night to upper hand and shoot dead the three terror suspects who carried out the attack —— to apprehend. the metropolitan police say eight officers were involved in that operation, firing some 50 bullets. the three men were wearing

what appeared to be suicide vests, which turned out to be hoax fests. but the police officers trying to wrap the hem them did not know that. their bravery has been hailed —— trying to apprehend them. so far, police have made 12 arrests in east london. mark rowley, head of national terror policy at the metropolitan police, has been describing the operation so far. the investigation is progressing at a pace, and officers from the met's counterterrorism command and the national counterterrorism network are working with partners to piece together exactly what happened last night. we have already made good progress, but there remains much more to do. we are now making significant progress in identifying the three attackers, and confirming the fact that there were no other suspects at the scene when the attack was carried out. work is ongoing to understand more about them, about their connections, and about whether they were assisted or supported by anyone else. as i think you are aware, there are searches ongoing in east london, and 12 arrests have already been made. there is clearly more to do, and we will work relentlessly

to get to the facts. we have established that the van used during the attack was a white renault van that was recently hired by one of the attackers. as our understanding grows, we now understand that the van at london bridge started the attack at 21:58 hours yesterday as it went north to south on the river, with members of the puplic calling police minutes later. the van mounted the pavement and collided with pedestrians before being abandoned where attackers were armed with knives, continued into the borough market area, stabbing numerous people. the attackers were then confronted by the firearms officers, and i can confirm that eight police firearms officers discharged their weapons. whilst this will be subject to an investigation by the ipcc, our initial assessment is in the region of 50 rounds, in the region of 50 bullets

at london bridge, we don't know anything more at this stage... atjust after ten last night, three men in a white van drove at speed across london bridge, determined to kill the spirit of the capital. oh, my god. a white van came speeding, 50 mph, it turned into the pavement, hit about three people in front of me. oh, my god! there was people just lying everywhere on the bridge, just people trying to help each other out, people bleeding, there wasjust blood everywhere. having deliberately mown down pedestrians, the three men got out of the van, knives in their hands, murder on their minds. he went and up and started stabbing this girl, i couldn't do nothing, mate. they attacked her, and they stabbed another guy, they went up the road, i started going, "everybody go,

terrorists," they were stabbing everyone. hejust stabbed this person — if they got up, stabbed them again, move onto the next person. i was staring at them from the balcony, just thinking, how could someone do such a thing? they were running up, going, "this is for allah," and they stabbed this girl i don't know how many times, ten, 15 times. armed police were on the scene within minutes, as the three men moved towards the bars and restaurants of borough market, packed with people on a warm summer's night. they were running in all the pubs and bars, stabbing people, i was going, "run, run!"

i was throwing things at them, pint glasses... people were throwing chairs, it seemed like chairs and glasses were going in both directions. these four friends were settling down for a meal in a mexican restaurant when the three knife men arrived. three men came in, one pulled out a knife and stabbed one of the girls sitting closest to the door, i think she was only 17. i got a glimpse of a guy with a knife, before i knew it, with a knife, and before i knew it the doors were shut, we were at the back of the restaurant. so you saw him? briefly, a glimpse. people were very scared, they began to run, knocking tables over to try to get out the way, and then very quickly, as we said, the men in the restaurant put the shutters down. in the early hours of this morning, claudia and lee, given refuge in a stranger's flat, told me what they saw from their apartmentjust above a pub the attackers are targeted on their killing spree. we looked out the window, people were running everywhere, we heard that there had beena stabbing... it was when i saw lots of people running down into the underground that i thought it was more serious,

because it was mass panic, notjust a fight, it was something serious. one young guy seemed to come out of the pub, and he was knocking on the window of the ambulance, saying, "you have to help my friend, he's been stabbed, "he is in the pub..." whether that was inside or outside, i don't know, but he said "my friend's been stabbed." there was another guy, probably in his 40s, on the other side of the ambulance, knocking on the other window, saying "i've been stabbed", and he was covered in blood, he said, "i've been stabbed five times, help me." he must have been in shock, because he seemed very calm. he had his shirt open, all this side was pure blood, it was just around his neck. he was knocking on the window saying, "you have to help me." at this time, police cars were still heading to london bridge, apparently unaware of where the attackers were. this one guy walked out in the road,

managed to grab the attention of one of the police cars and basically forced them down that road, saying, "you have to go down there, he's down there," and so this one police 4x4 screeched down stoney street, and then easily within five seconds there were six gunshots, or what sounded like six clear gunshots. gunfire. six rounds, two attackers dead. then, witnesses suggest, another volley of bullets as the third attacker was shot and killed, all within eight minutes of the first call to police. it seemed like a big attack was happening, so we wanted to keep the door locked. so i wasjust having a... must have been terrifying. it was terrifying — i was having a mental battle between either the idea of an explosion coming through the floor or us being on the street, which one do we do? so i shouted down and said, "what should we do?" one of the police officers said, "you have to get out "of the building now."

it was an attack not just on individuals but on our way of life — the killers targeted people having fun, enjoying the freedoms of a diverse and liberal city. with daybreak, tales of bravery and heroism emerged from the horrors of the previous night. i heard truly remarkable stories of extraordinarily brave actions by officers on and off duty, who were first on the scene. i also heard of colleagues from other emergency services and members of the public who ran towards the danger as this incident unfolded. many, many people risked their own safety to help others, and to treat those seriously injured — and indeed to confront the suspects involved. the prime minister addressed the nation from downing street, also paying tribute to the work of the emergency services. on behalf of the people of london and the whole country, i want to thank and pay tribute to the professionalism and bravery of the police and emergency services, and to the courage of members

of the public who defended themselves and others from the attackers. and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, and with their friends, families and loved ones. but mrs may was notjust reflecting a nation's shock — she promised the outrage would be met by a response. it is time to say, enough is enough. everybody needs to go about their lives as they normally would. our society should continue to function in accordance with our values. but when it comes to taking on extremism and terrorism, things need to change. london is still trying to come to terms with the awful events, to understand what happened. this was an appalling act of terror, where innocent londoners and visitors were enjoying a night out in london bridge and borough market,

and were deliberately targeted by these cowardly terrorists. barricaded in bars and restaurants for two hours or more, police finally let people leave for home in the early hours, hands on their heads just in case an attacker was still among them. i just want people to know this is not what london is like, we are a strong, welcome, caring city, and this is a terrible thing to happen, but it won't stop us living our lives, really. london bridge is falling down, the song goes — but london appears determined to stand up to those who would divide it. people have been the —— leaving

flowers all day as a mark of respect for the seven people who have lost their lives, there is a london imam. they are holding placards, you might be able to see, hashtag turn to love. that is the message from these london muslims, angry at the attack here at borough market on london bridge last night, in which seven people died, 36 people are still in hospital, 21 of those are in critical care. and these people saying, this is not an attack in their name, not an attack in the name of islam, it is not there is land. —— their islam.

six minutes of those first attacks at 10:08pm. let's talk about how medics prepare for something like this. gillet mers and i, ally hogg the respondent, is here. you know that they have enough blood and the teams are trained. how often they do exercises like this? they are very well prepared for this kind of incident. this is a major trauma unit, it specialises in injuries like stabbings, gunshot wounds, road traffic accidents. it is already very well prepared. it does have practices, rehearsals for this kind of big incident. whilst they are used to doing with these sorts of injuries, they are not used to doing with so many in such a short space of time. but sadly they are recently very well versed. this was the hospital many people came to when they were injured in the westminster attack just

they were injured in the westminster attackjust six weeks ago. medics here in central london are used to sta b here in central london are used to stab wounds, and gunshot wounds and is well. the first responders, the people who go out running into danger, as the prime minister was saying and cressida dick was saying, if they can stabilise patients and give them the triage to stop the blood loss, they have a very good chance of surviving once they get to a unit like your. indeed. they were treated at the scene, many of them very quickly. the ambulances were there within six minutes. they were brought to five hospitals, including once like this, major trauma units with everything they need. medics on stand—by, people came in as soon they were told they needed to. many just came in of their own accord, this is the exact place they need to be, a major trauma unit like this. you have a very positive chance, depending on how series —— syria's raw injury is. one of the victim -- asier riesgo injury is. one of the mothers of the victims was saying

that he was stabbed when he was outside a bar in borough market last night. i spoke to some of his friends, two of whom kept him alive. when he went back into the pub, one of his friends put it pressure packed on the stab wound and took him back into the pub. he was brought to this hospital by police officers in the back of a police car, putting pressure on that win. he is now able to set up in bed and talk to his mother and otherfamily members. back to you so one of many extraordinary stories of survival. if you are worried about friends, families or loved ones who you think were caught up in the attack and are injured, there is a casualty bureau that you can bring. i will give you the number. it is a i want to bring in the former chief

superintendent with the metropolitan police who is here at the police cordon. a third terror attack in the uk in something like three months, a second in two weeks. what are your thoughts? it is worrying. we should be very confident with the police service that we have got. we have the individuals who carried out the horrific attack, they were killed within eight minutes of the police being called. it was fantastic action by the police officers. they got there very quickly. you imagine how frightening it must have been for the officers as well as the individuals. fantastic work by the police. and indeed all of the emergency services. it is being stressed that these men were wearing dummy explosive vests. obviously the police officers trying to apprehend them did not know that they were fa ke them did not know that they were fake breasts. they could have been real suicide vests. absolutely -- that they were fake suicide vests. it shows the level of bravery. by

running towards those individuals they might have been putting their lives in danger. what we need to be doing is to make sure that we have enough resources for the police. i'm keen to make sure that we do everything we can to support the police officers. and indeed brave members of the public that have intervened and helped each other. london is an incredibly diverse part of the world. one in eight of london's population are muslim. we have to remember that this is an attack on all faiths. and really we need to make sure that we support what we do in this country to deal with terrorists and be very firm with terrorists and be very firm with the individuals who try and make sure that they cause damage to ask. what more can be done by the police, the operatives, to stop more attacks? the key thing is the community. so all the authorities. the community solve and deal with errors. we need to make sure that we have enough resources in place, the community feel confident coming forward. theresa may has talked about doing more work, doing a review of counterterrorism

legislation. i think that is helpful. one of the things we need to be looking at is prevent, to make sure that the government strategy is look that and more people are confident. the other key area is the end that. if you look at how the internet companies make billions of pounds in profit, a huge amount of money. they need to be made to share information with the authorities. if there is any concern about extremism. at the moment, these organisations like daesh or isis are using the internet to facilitate attacks. i think that is a really, really important area, we need to get tough on the internet companies. you can do all of that and still not prevented attack like we saw last night. three men in a white van driving at high speed and hitting pedestrians and then stabbing pupils to kill and unfortunately there a lwa ys to kill and unfortunately there always is a possibility. we need to make sure we do everything to reduce that possibility. a lot of these individuals are planning things on the internet, that is where we have got to go. we have to go after the

internet companies. there is no excuses, it is about the internet companies sharing information with the authorities are a timely way. they make huge amounts of profit, they need to spend some of that money monitoring what is being written on social media. you spent a long time as a senior officer at the metropolitan police. will their resources by stressed stretched at the minute at the moment? there is a lot of please work being done. the minute at the moment? there is a lot of please work being donelj imagine all police leave is being cancelled, but officers will be working incredibly long hours. it is what police officers do. they want to make london say. they will be totally committed to that. we need totally committed to that. we need to remember, when we see this extraordinary act of bravery, not only by the firearms officers but the off—duty officers who have attacked these individuals, we need to re m ove attacked these individuals, we need to remove that when police officers make mistakes it is often a genuine mistake, and we must by the bravery of the police officers for the

state back in september 2014. i know you work very hard, going around the country, trying to end hate, really. just tell us what you do and what is your response to what happened here? i visit schools, colleges, universities, churches, mosques, basically anywhere that will have me to talk about unity, tolerance and peace, tell my family story and try to make something positive. to try and fight the hatred that terrorists and fight the hatred that terrorists and extremists of all types want to bring into our society. and what are your ports after this latest attack was like we have had three attacks in three months —— what are your thoughts. wherever a terrorist attack occurs, and for whatever so—called reason, it hits my family ha rd so—called reason, it hits my family hard because we know that other

families are suffering the way that mine have done. we know that families have lost. and it is... i can understand the hate, the anger, the hurt that they must be feeling. however, we can‘t take that path of hatred. if we take that path that divide us, that divides our society, then we are doing the extremists and then we are doing the extremists and the terrorists‘ job for them. so it‘s important that we try to take that path of unity. that path of... humanity. do you think there should be tough action? the prime minister has talked about tough action to try and stop this kind of thing in the future happening again?|j and stop this kind of thing in the future happening again? i think the police and the security services in this country are doing a fine job, but they have a lot to do. i think

reaction time than ever before. yet what they are up against is a growing problem. the country needs to wake up to the fact this is an increasing threat, not a decreasing threat, both globally and within our midst in the uk, in our communities here in the uk. this increasing threat needs to be confronted head—on. it is notjust about resources for intelligence agencies and the police, we need to confront the ideology and theology driving this threat. also driving it is the imminent loss of the is self—proclaimed caliphate in syria and iraq. after two years of brutal rule, jihadists look to be driven out of mosul and raqqa. they are calling for revenge attacks in europe. it says the west is condemned byjihadists what ever it does. we are blamed by jihadists, like iraq.

we do not intervene, like in syria, we are blamed byjihadists for not caring about muslim lies. —— muslim lives. anything that is consistent is the identity crisis and the ideological narrative. that‘s something we can do something about. we need to foster the kind of society in which people feel they belong. the advice given by the metropolitan police to the public is blunt. in the event of a terrorist attack, they are telling people to run, tell and hide — at least until the threat is dealt with. the scale of the terrorist threat is daunting. at least 500 active plots under investigation, around 3000 subject of interest being monitored. and 20,000 individuals in a wider network. three terrorist attacks getting through in just three months throws and a comfortable spotlight on m15, the security service behind me. it is theirjob to try to provide the intelligence to stop these before they happen. they have helped to do that successfully 18 times

in the past four years. but now the scale of the problem facing this country is causing some to question whether they can cope with what they are up against. gchq, the government‘s listening station, is engaged in a constant battle to break into terrorists‘ communications. a former independent reviewer of terrorism legislation believes tech companies should do more. there is a need for change in approach. a few years ago one tech company said, we are merely a library. that won‘t do. there needs to be a law saying they are not merely a library. they are big companies. they have economy is bigger than many nations. they have a responsibility to all of us to ensure that unlawful, terrorist content does not appear on the internet anymore. tonight, britain remains at threat level severe, the second—highest below critical, meaning a further attack is thought highly likely. that threat is unlikely to subside soon. frank gardner, bbc news. in

will be singing with 24 young people from the local high school choir, 24 boys and girls who have been invited to sing here tonight in what is bound to be probably one of the most emotional parts of the event. of course everyone here tonight in manchester thinking about people in london as well after last might‘s attacks there. the ariana grande tea m attacks there. the ariana grande team saying this event has a greater purpose, asking the strong city of manchester and the world to join them in making this statement that hatred and fear will never win.

today we stand together, they say. the huge amount of energy and joy here tonight. a whole gamut of emotions. and talking to people waiting to go in earlier, they were incredibly calm worried not for the presence of armed police officers and heightened security. cheering one would assume it was a normal concert. and at least maybe for

these couple of hours, people tonight, they are not going to forget what happened two weeks ago, but they will experience the joy that music brings, the joy that brought them to the concert two weeks ago in the first place. so this concert is about so much, it is about remembering but it is also about remembering but it is also about celebrating the lives of those people who died as well. those who we re people who died as well. those who were injured and celebrating their love of music. so the concert continues, we are expecting more from ariana grande very shortly. but this report now from mark easton, bringing us up to date on last might‘s events. clear the area now! and a country cried — please not again. we are hearing tonight that british armed police have attended

an incident at london bridge, we don't know anything more at this stage... atjust after ten last night, three men in a white van drove at speed across london bridge, determined to kill the spirit of the capital. oh, my god. a white van came speeding, 50 mph, it turned into the pavement, hit about three people in front of me. oh, my god! there was people just lying everywhere on the bridge, just people trying to help each other out, people bleeding, there wasjust blood everywhere. having deliberately mown down pedestrians, the three men got out of the van, knives in their hands, murder on their minds. he went and up and started stabbing this girl, i couldn't do nothing, mate. they attacked her, and they stabbed another guy, they went up the road,

i started going, "everybody go, terrorists," they were stabbing everyone. hejust stabbed this person — if they got up, stabbed them again, move onto the next person. i was staring at them from the balcony, just thinking, how could someone do such a thing? they were running up, going, "this is for allah," and they stabbed this girl i don't know how many times, ten, 15 times. armed police were on the scene within minutes, as the three men moved towards the bars and restaurants of borough market, packed with people on a warm summer‘s night. they were running in allthe pubs and bars, stabbing people, i was going, "run, run!" i was throwing things at them, pint glasses... people were throwing chairs, it seemed like chairs and glasses were going in both directions.

these four friends were settling down for a meal in a mexican restaurant when the three knifemen arrived. three men came in, one pulled out a knife and stabbed one of the girls sitting closest to the door, i think she was only 17. i got a glimpse of a guy with a knife, and before i knew it the doors were shut, we were at the back of the restaurant. so you saw him? briefly, a glimpse. people were very scared, they began to run, knocking tables over to try to get out the way, and then very quickly, as we said, the men in the restaurant put the shutters down. in the early hours of this morning, claudia and liam, given refuge in a stranger‘s flat, told me what they saw from their apartmentjust above a pub the attackers are targeted on their killing spree. we looked out the window, people were running everywhere, we heard that there had beena stabbing... it was when i saw lots of people

running down into the underground that i thought it was more serious, because it was mass panic, notjust a fight, it was something serious. one young guy seemed to come out of the pub, and he was knocking on the window of the ambulance, saying, "you have to help my friend, he‘s been stabbed, "he is in the pub..." whether that was inside or outside, i don‘t know, but he said "my friend‘s been stabbed." there was another guy, probably in his 40s, on the other side of the ambulance, knocking on the other window, saying "i‘ve been stabbed", and he was covered in blood, he said, "i‘ve been stabbed five times, help me." he must have been in shock, because he seemed very calm. he had his shirt open, all this side was pure blood, it was just around his neck. he was knocking on the window saying, "you have to help me." at this time, police cars were still heading to london bridge, apparently unaware of where the attackers were. this one guy walked out in the road, managed to grab the attention of one of the police cars and basically

forced them down that road, saying, "you have to go down there, he‘s down there," and so this one police 4x4 screeched down stoney street, and then easily within five seconds there were six gunshots, or what sounded like six clear gunshots. gunfire. six rounds, two attackers dead. then, witnesses suggest, another volley of bullets as the third attacker was shot and killed, all within eight minutes of the first call to police. it seemed like a big attack was happening, so we wanted to keep the door locked. so i wasjust having a... must have been terrifying. it was terrifying — i was having a mental battle between either the idea of an explosion coming through the floor or us being on the street, which one do we do? so i shouted down and said, "what should we do?" one of the police officers said, "you have to get out "of the building now." it was an attack not just on individuals but on our way of life —

the killers targeted people having fun, enjoying the freedoms of a diverse and liberal city. with daybreak, tales of bravery and heroism emerged from the horrors of the previous night. i heard truly remarkable stories of extraordinarily brave actions by officers on and off duty, who were first on the scene. i also heard of colleagues from other emergency services, and members of the public who ran towards the danger as this incident unfolded. many, many people risked their own safety to help others, and to treat those seriously injured — and indeed to confront the suspects involved. the prime minister addressed the nation from downing street, also paying tribute to the work of the emergency services. on behalf of the people of london

and the whole country, i want to thank and pay tribute to the professionalism and bravery of the police and the emergency services, and to the courage of members of the public who defended themselves and others from the attackers. and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, and with their friends, families and loved ones. but mrs may was notjust reflecting a nation‘s shock — she promised the outrage would be met by a response. it is time to say, enough is enough. everybody needs to go about their lives as they normally would. our society should continue to function in accordance with our values. but when it comes to taking on extremism and terrorism, things need to change. london is still trying to come to terms with the awful events, to understand what happened. this was an appalling act of terror, where innocent londoners and visitors were enjoying a night

barking and east ham. we may find some of those are to do with people known to be associates of the people who carried out this attack. they will be people that police will want to run from this enquiry so i do not know that we will get 12 charges from those arrests, but at this stage in this operation, you have to get through all be known associates of the people who carried out the attack and worked through them and thatis attack and worked through them and that is what is going on. the police worked out the identity is pretty quickly of these three men. they are still trying to be absolutely certain about that, but i do not think there is much doubt that they know who these three men were and they believe they have killed all three people responsible, which seems extraordinary to be saying that now. it would be unheard of in britain only if you give ago but now we a cce pt britain only if you give ago but now we accept that in an attack like this the only option the police have

with islam, our values and morals and this is alljust the umbrella term of terrorism. thank you so much for talking to us. interesting to hear your views. let‘s talk about the casualties now of the attacks here at borough market and london bridge last night. we know a number of people are still in hospitals and our health correspondent has been talking to my colleague about the casualties in hospital at the moment. they are very well prepared for this kind of incident. this is a major trauma unit as you mention, that means it specialises in injuries like stabbings, gunshot wounds, road traffic accidents so it is already well prepared. it does

have practices for this kind of big incident. whilst they are used to dealing with the source of injuries, they are not used to dealing with so many in such a short space of time, but they are well versed, this was the hospital people came to after the hospital people came to after the westminster attack. the fact that we are in central london, the medics are used to gunshot wounds and stabbings as wall. the first responders, if they can stabilise patients, if they can give them their triage to stop the blood loss, they have a good chance of surviving once they get to unit like it. they we re once they get to unit like it. they were treated on the scene, many of them very quickly. ambulances were there in six minutes. they were brought to major trauma units that have everything they need. people came in, they were volunteering, they came in as soon as they were told to hand this is the place they

on london bridge on saturday night in which seven people were killed and nearly 50 injured. the attackers drove a van into pedestrians before three men jumped out and began stabbing people in their path. nearly 50 people were taken to hospital — around 20 are in a critical condition. a french citizen and a canadian citizen are among the dead. the police say they now know the identities of the attackers. they were shot dead after special officers fired an unprecedented number of bullets at the men, who were wearing fake suicide belts. britain‘s prime minister, theresa may, who‘s visited some of the wounded in hospital, said thursday‘s general election would go ahead. she condemned the attack, saying enough is enough. we must come together and pull together, and we will defeat our enemies. the singer ariana grande has been leading a star—studded line—up

and easily accessible. i phoned the anti—terrorist hotline. i spoke to the gentleman, i told him about our conversation and why i think he's been radicalised. the friend also claims the alleged attacker was not arrested after he was reported, and was allowed to keep his passport. i did my bit. i know a lot of people did, but the authorities didn't do their bit. we have asked the metropolitan police to respond to these allegations. this evening they described the force used to bring it under control. we will have an investigation by the ipcc. our initial assessment is in the region of 50 bullets were fired by eight officers. the three attackers were shot dead. and tonight, this was east ham. officers are still searching homes,

work to have a counter narrative on this whole extreme violence whether it is faith —based or otherwise. we need to work with communities and a key part of that is the faith in the police services, neighbourhood teams and people who work in partnership with communities. they are the ones who really know their communities and unfortunately those numbers have been eroded for so long over the la st been eroded for so long over the last few years because of posterity. we need to build back those numbers to build community partnerships and build intelligence that helps to prevent this. so you're saying one of the issues is manpower? moral police manpower to work in the? also around investigations because we have 700 less detectives than we had a few years ago and, as a result of that, we're not getting the proactivity. we need to build back

the infrastructure to help our proactivity around all sorts of violence, but in particular around terrorism, and we need to get the prevent strategy to be looked at very closely. i was googling, and top of the hit was prevent. it shows that it has this texture and look and feel that is not embracing people, especially from certain communities. and also, since the counterterrorism securities act 2015, we found the statutory duties that teachers, doctors and nurses have to inform about anyone who shows a lack of british values or any form of terrorist tendencies, they have to report them. that has had a massive impact on communities

who believe they are being stigmatised and of course we have got to work closely with them to ensure we do this together. this is not the time to be stigmatising. it is time to be working together, especially with the police. a former superintendent with the metropolitan police force. the attack here comes four days before the general election on thursday, a campaign that has been paused twice because of terror attacks, the manchester attack and now this attack. the politicians did come out to condemn this attack. and from the

prime minister, there was much tougher talk on tackling terrorism. theresa may called for countries around the world to act to stop internet firms allowing extremism online. there will be a review of the uk‘s counterterrorism strategy and she warned there was too much tolerance of extremism. while the recent attacks are not connected by, networks, they are connected in one important sense. they are bound together by the single evil ideology of islamist extremism that preaches hatred, so is division and promotes sectarianism. from here it seems an attempt to offer more than platitudes about the country‘s protection but this stage still little tangible detail about what

continue, campaigns resuming full tomorrow, and now again the nation‘s safety at the heart of the debate. ukip says there has been an unwillingness to confront extremism in the past. we have got to fight fire with fire. there is a small number of people in this country who quite clearly hate who we are, hate the way we live and want to destroy our democracy. they are a cancer they need to be cut out. in scotland are warning robust action must not lead to the persecution of any community. terrorists win if we allow ourselves to become divided and they do so if we allow our freedoms and civil liberties to be undermined. that is what acts of terrorism are designed to do, to divide and to undefined the values that define who we are. this once again has become a balancing act between the need for security and action and the protection of civil liberties. we must work together to make sure we tackle terrorism in a

very practical and effective way and do it together. what we must not do is trade away our freedoms, our great british freedoms, in response to the cowardly acts of these pathetic people last night. if we did that they would have won. but today, in the fight against terrorism, any sense of victory feels far away, any answer is hard to come by. one thing many here are holding onto, and attack designed to undermine democracy has only strengthened the will of those determined to protect it. labour is resuming its national campaign for the general election this evening with a pledge by its leader, jeremy corbyn, to do whatever is necessary to protect public safety, including allowing the police to use whatever force they need to save lives. he has been saying the labour party are promising do whatever it takes to protect public safety. the mass murderers who brought terror to our streets in london and manchester

everyone. i was going, run! a french citizen and a canadian citizen are among the dead. as details of the victims emerge, relatives of those hurt have been telling their stories. hejust stepped outside he just stepped outside the barjust for a second, and a man ran up to him and said, this is for my family, this is for islam, and stuck a knife straight in him. several homes are raided in barking in east london. it‘s thought that four of the 12 people arrested are women. the prime minister condemned what she called the "evil ideology of islamist extremism" and said it was time to say "enough is enough". there is to be frank far too much tolerance of extremism in our country. we need to become far more robust in identifying it and stamping it out across the public sector and across society.

the singer ariana grande has been leading a star—studded line—up at a concert in manchester, in aid of the families of the victims of the bombing that took place in the city two weeks ago. good evening from central london, where seven people have been killed and many others injured, some critically, in the country‘s second terrorist attack in less than two weeks, the third in three months. we now know that seven people died in those attacks, 48 were injured, 36 of those are still in hospital and a number of those are still in

critical care. the investigation into what happened here is fast moving. there have been 12 arrests in barking east london today. let‘s bring you up to date. police responded to reports of a van ploughing into pedestrians on london bridge shortly after ten o‘clock. the vehicle then crashed and was abandoned. three menjumped out, heading for the nearby borough market, borough market, where, armed with knives, they began stabbing people. within eight minutes, the three attackers were shot dead, firing 50 rounds. a member of the public nearby was accidentally hit and injured. 12 people have been arrested in east london in a series of raids.

the prime minister has been chairing a meeting of cobra earlier on today. after that she said, enough is enough and called for a rethink of anti—terrorism strategies. let‘s get this report now from our home editor mark easton and you might find some of the images in the report distressing. clear the area now! and a country cried — please not again. we are hearing tonight that british armed police have attended an incident at london bridge, we don't know anything more at this stage... atjust after ten last night, three men in a white van drove at speed across london bridge, determined to kill the spirit of the capital. oh, my god. a white van came speeding, 50 mph, it turned into the pavement, hit about three people

in front of me. oh, my god! there was people just lying everywhere on the bridge, just people trying to help each other out, people bleeding, there wasjust blood everywhere. having deliberately mown down pedestrians, the three men got out of the van, knives in their hands, murder on their minds. he went and up and started stabbing this girl, i couldn't do nothing, mate. they attacked her, and they stabbed another guy, they went up the road, i started going, "everybody go, terrorists," they were stabbing everyone. hejust stabbed this person — if they got up, stabbed them again, move onto the next person. i was staring at them from the balcony, just thinking, how could someone do such a thing?

they were running up, going, "this is for allah," and they stabbed this girl i don't know how many times, ten, 15 times. armed police were on the scene within minutes, as the three men moved towards the bars and restaurants of borough market, packed with people on a warm summer‘s night. they were running in allthe pubs and bars, stabbing people, i was going, "run, run!" i was throwing things at them, pint glasses... people were throwing chairs, it seemed like chairs and glasses were going in both directions. these four friends were settling down for a meal in a mexican restaurant when the three knifemen arrived. three men came in, one pulled out a knife and stabbed one of the girls sitting closest to the door, i think she was only 17. i got a glimpse of a guy with a knife, and before i knew it the doors were shut, we were at the back

of the restaurant. so you saw him? briefly, a glimpse. people were very scared, they began to run, knocking tables over to try to get out the way, and then very quickly, as we said, the men in the restaurant put the shutters down. in the early hours of this morning, claudia and liam, given refuge in a stranger‘s flat, told me what they saw from their apartmentjust above a pub the attackers had targeted on their killing spree. we looked out the window, people were running everywhere, we heard that there had beena stabbing... it was when i saw lots of people running down into the underground that i thought it was more serious, because it was mass panic, notjust a fight, it was something serious. one young guy seemed to come out of the pub, and he was knocking on the window of the ambulance, saying, "you have to help my friend, he‘s been stabbed, he is in the pub..." whether that was inside or outside, i don‘t know, but he said "my

friend‘s been stabbed." there was another guy, probably in his 40s, on the other side of the ambulance, knocking on the other window, saying "i‘ve been stabbed", and he was covered in blood, he said, "i‘ve been stabbed five times, help me." he must have been in shock, because he seemed very calm. he had his shirt open, all this side was pure blood, it was just around his neck. he was knocking on the window saying, "you have to help me." at this time, police cars were still heading to london bridge, apparently unaware of where the attackers were. this one guy walked out in the road, managed to grab the attention of one of the police cars and basically forced them down that road, saying, "you have to go down there, he‘s down there," and so this one police 4x4 screeched down stoney street, and then easily within five seconds there were six gunshots, or what sounded like six clear gunshots. gunfire. six rounds, two attackers dead.

then, witnesses suggest, another volley of bullets as the third attacker was shot and killed, all within eight minutes of the first call to police. it seemed like a big attack was happening, so we wanted to keep the door locked. so i wasjust having a... must have been terrifying. it was terrifying — i was having a mental battle between either the idea of an explosion coming through the floor or us being on the street, which one do we do? so i shouted down and said, "what should we do?" one of the police officers said, "you have to get out "of the building now." it was an attack not just on individuals but on our way of life — the killers targeted people having fun, enjoying the freedoms of a diverse and liberal city. with daybreak, tales of bravery and heroism emerged from the horrors of the previous night. i heard truly remarkable stories of extraordinarily brave actions by officers on and off duty, who were first on the scene.

i also heard of colleagues from other emergency services, and members of the public who ran towards the danger as this incident unfolded. many, many people risked their own safety to help others, and to treat those seriously injured — and indeed to confront the suspects involved. the prime minister addressed the nation from downing street, also paying tribute to the work of the emergency services. on behalf of the people of london and the whole country, i want to thank and pay tribute to the professionalism and bravery of the police and the emergency services, and to the courage of members of the public who defended themselves and others from the attackers. and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, and with their friends, families and loved ones.

but mrs may was notjust reflecting a nation‘s shock — she promised the outrage would be met by a response. it is time to say, enough is enough. everybody needs to go about their lives as they normally would. our society should continue to function in accordance with our values. but when it comes to taking on extremism and terrorism, things need to change. london is still trying to come to terms with the awful events, to understand what happened. this was an appalling act of terror, where innocent londoners and visitors were enjoying a night out in london bridge and borough market, and were deliberately targeted by these cowardly terrorists. barricaded in bars and restaurants for two hours or more, police finally let people leave for home in the early hours, hands on their heads just in case an attacker was still among them. i just want people to know this

is not what london is like, we are a strong, welcome, caring city, and this is a terrible thing to happen, but it won‘t stop us living our lives, really. london bridge is falling down, the song goes — but london appears determined to stand up to those who would divide it. let‘s bring you the latest on the investigation in the wake of the terror attacks here that have left seven people dead and there have been a large number of arrests at barking in east london and our correspondent is there with the latest on that. a police cordon is still in place here on king ‘s road in barking just a few streets down from the centre of barking, where a

major police raid took place little bit earlier on this morning. it is a slightly reduced cord and now to allow traffic down the king ‘s road but officers are barricading that door, making sure they know who is coming in and out at all times. we know from neighbours that some of them were not allowed in throughout today until about seven o‘clock tonight. they have now been allowed tonight. they have now been allowed to return there, but talking to some of those that live here today, several say they do believe that one of those attackers last night was a man that lived in this ground floor flat today that has been so much looked at by police. they say that because they have seen pictures of that man that have been widely circulated around the media today and they say they believe, not 100% guaranteed, but they believe that is

the third in three months on uk soil. shock horror. at the brutality of what we witnessed yesterday evening and a condolences go out to those who lost their lives and the emergency services who responded so quickly in bringing the situation under control. theresa may has been saying enough is enough, there needs to bea saying enough is enough, there needs to be a rethink of counterterror strategy in this country, do you agree with that? completely agree. we really need to pause and think about how we move forward with all of these challenges we face on a regular basis. this year really brings it home. it has been called previously in legislation. charlie winter, what is your view? it is very easy to talk about social media

muslims, they are not injune with it, so it is a very small fringe element of people following these trends. we were just talking to a young muslim man who came and lay flowers said. he was saying muslims are angry about what had happened here and said more muslims need to come out and talk to the media and express their anger. do you agree with that? to some extent. i am here tonight, expressing anger. i am a born and bred londoner. it could have been anybody. this was an attack on me and my city. everyone should be out here protesting against this barbarism. charlie winter, we a lot about the government‘s prevent strategy and a lot of controversy over that, people say it does not work, what is your view on that? i think it would be

society, they want to turn people against each other, and it is so important to have that discussion and conversation going and that is where the media has an important role. people are saying this is the new normal, this is something we have to learn to live with. we have seen these terror attacks and lots of other european cities. and we just have to get used to it, is that how you see it? this is not normal. this kind of environment and situation is not normalfor any society and should not be. we should be out there challenging, in whatever means we can, this threat from so—called islamic state. weather it is through communities, government, whoever it is, it needs to be challenged. this is not the kind of like we want to live in our

were quick to express their now familiar remarks of solidarity. from around the globe, they took to social media to express their horror and sympathy. president putin of russia spoke of the cruelty and cynicism of the attack. and chancellor merkel said that, in the fight against terrorism, germany is resolutely at britain‘s side. in rome, the pope led prayers for peace that were echoed by other christian leaders. translation: may the spirit give peace to the entire world, heal the plagues of war and of terrorism that even tonight, in london, hit innocent civilians. let‘s pray for the victims and their families. it is right that, when there is great evil, that we feel anger, but that anger must be turned on...its head, into a commitment tojustice, and not against any group of people, especially members of the islamic community. they have not done this,

atrocities that unfolded at london bridge and borough market. one of those described what happened to my colleague. we had a friend overfrom sydney. and we happened to be sitting at a table nearest the door, and it suddenly became clear the security from borough market were saying, "close the door, lock it down, duck and cover," and this young guy from the restaurant put his foot in the door and held it closed, people understandably panicked, got to the back of the restaurant, ducked, turned over tables, there was food flying everywhere, and people didn‘t need to be told twice that they needed to put themselves first and look after themselves. i looked up and looked over, and could see this guy throwing a table, we didn‘t know what that was about, but it turned out it was a wonderfully heroic guy who put his life before ours, which is remarkable. our lives before his, sorry... he was throwing the table at someone he thought was an attacker? yes, that is what it turned out to be. a few minutes later, i looked up and someone was coming out

of the restaurant next door covered in blood, holding their chest or neck, going out and meandering through, and i hope they got the paramedic support that they clearly desperately needed, and i hope that person is not one of the people that you mentioned previously. could you or yourfriends have any sense of what had happened to that person? what was going through your mind at that point? you could hear screams. the security had said, "there is an incident, lock yourself in". people were panicking. to be honest, me and my friend were calm when other people were panicking, firstly trying to get people to go upstairs so they were a bit safer, to stop people panicking and going out through the fire escape — going out into an unknown was the worst thing at that time, so we kept people in. we had a pregnant lady with us who needed a seat and water, and probably more calm than we could have provided, but we tried to look out for her. we saw the police arrive almost immediately, they did a sweep of the area, gunshots went off, which was worrying, more sweeps of the area and gunshots went off. by this point, they had people

outside each of the restaurants, they were trying to communicate through this tiny little window. we tried to piece together from social media what was happening on the bridge, but we were clearly in the middle of something maybe related but clearly quite different as well. you say you think you and your friend stayed pretty calm? she did most of it, to be fair. she was phenomenal, she got them turning off all the hobs, getting the candles down. she was great. were you not frightened? the more you think about it, the more you were. the bit for me when i realised was when we were coming out and we were meandering around people‘s shoes that had fallen off, blood, people had dropped their wallets and whatever, we got to just this area, actually, that was where we were safe and suddenly they moved the cordon because we were not safe,

injured in the attack. 12 arrests have been made today by police in east london. let‘s get more now on the terror attacks in london. tonight, the latest on the terror attack at london bridge, where seven people were killed last night and dozens injured. keep moving! it happened in an area packed with thousands of people at bars and restaurants in nearby borough market. a white van had been driven into pedestrians before three men jumped out, armed with knives, stabbing people in their path. when i first saw them, they shouted, this is for allah! then they start a girl ten or 15 times. i could not do nothing. there was widespread panic as police ordered people to take cover as the attackers were still at large. others fled the area as the sound of loud gunfire filled the air during the rapid response by police.

within eight minutes of the initial alert the three attackers, all wearing fake suicide vests, had been shot dead by armed police. emergency services say that 48 were injured, some of them critically, as friends and families have spoken of those affected. hejust stepped outside he just stepped outside the bar for a second and a man ran up to him and said, this is for my family, this is for islam, and stuck a knife straight in him. in downing street, the prime minister condemned the "evil ideology of islamist extremism" and called for a new approach. there is, to be frank, far too much tolerance of extremism in our country, so we need to become far more robust in identifying it and stamping it out across the public sector, and across society. our

priority must be public safety. i will take whatever action is necessary and effective to protect the security of our people and our country. during the day in barking in east london several homes were raided and 12 arrests were made. and this is the scene tonight close to london bridge. we‘ll have the latest details, analysis and reaction in britain and around the world. good evening from central london. we‘re in the area just south of london bridge where, this time last night, seven people were killed and dozens injured in a terrorist attack carried out by three men, who were shot dead by police within minutes of the attack taking place.

it was britain‘s second major terrorist incident in the space of 12 days. it began just after 10 o‘clock last night, when a rented van was used to knock down pedestrians on london bridge. three men wearing fake suicide vests then left the vehicle and began stabbing people in pubs and bars in nearby borough market. within just eight minutes, the three men had been confronted and shot dead by police. a member of the public was also injured in the exchanges. during the day, 12 people were arrested in barking in east london following a series of raids. and the prime minister, speaking in downing street, called for a new approach to combat the "single evil ideology of islamist extremism". in this extended programme we‘ll have full details, reaction and analysis. and we start with our home editor mark easton, whose report does include some distressing images. clear the area now!

and a country cried — please not again. we are hearing tonight that british armed police have attended an incident at london bridge, we don't know anything more at this stage... atjust after ten last night, three men in a white van drove at speed across london bridge, determined to kill the spirit of the capital. oh, my god. a white van came speeding, 50 mph, it turned into the pavement, hit about three people in front of me. oh, my god! there was people just lying everywhere on the bridge, just people trying to help each other out, people bleeding, there wasjust blood everywhere. having deliberately mown down pedestrians, the three men got out of the van,

knives in their hands, murder on their minds. he went and up and started stabbing this girl, i couldn't do nothing, mate. they attacked her, and they stabbed another guy, they went up the road, i started going, "everybody run, terrorists, " they were stabbing everyone. hejust stabbed this person — if they got up, stabbed them again, move onto the next person. i was staring at them from the balcony, just thinking, how could someone do such a thing? armed police were on the scene within minutes, as the three men moved towards the bars and restaurants of borough market, packed with people on a warm summer‘s night. they were running in allthe pubs and bars, stabbing people, i was going,

"run, run!" i was throwing things at them, pint glasses... people were throwing chairs, it seemed like chairs and glasses were going in both directions. these four friends were settling down for a meal in a mexican restaurant when the three knifemen arrived. three men came in, one pulled out a knife and stabbed one of the girls sitting closest to the door, i think she was only 17. i got a glimpse of a guy with a knife, and before i knew it the doors were shut, we were at the back of the restaurant. so you saw him? briefly, a glimpse. people were very scared, they began to run, knocking tables over to try to get out the way, and then very quickly, as we said, the men in the restaurant put the shutters down. in the early hours of this morning, claudia and liam, given refuge in a stranger‘s flat, told me what they saw from their apartmentjust above a pub the attackers had targeted on their killing spree.

we looked out the window, people were running everywhere, we heard that there had beena stabbing... it was when i saw lots of people running down into the underground that i thought it was more serious, because it was mass panic, notjust a fight, it was something serious. one young guy seemed to come out of the pub, and he was knocking on the window of the ambulance, saying, "you have to help my friend, he‘s been stabbed, "he is in the pub..." whether that was inside or outside, i don‘t know, but he said "my friend‘s been stabbed." there was another guy, probably in his 40s, on the other side of the ambulance, knocking on the other window, saying, "i‘ve been stabbed", and he was covered in blood, he said, "i‘ve been stabbed five times, help me." he must have been in shock, because he seemed very calm. he had his shirt open, all this side was pure blood, it was just around his neck. he was knocking on the window saying, "you have to help me." at this time, police cars were still heading to london bridge, apparently unaware of where the attackers were.

this one guy walked out in the road, managed to grab the attention of one of the police cars and basically forced them down that road, saying, "you have to go down there, he‘s down there," and so this one police 4x4 screeched down stoney street, and then easily within five seconds there were six gunshots, or what sounded like six clear gunshots. gunfire. six rounds, two attackers dead. within eight minutes of the first call to police, the third knifeman had also been shot dead. 50 rounds fired altogether. one member of the public suffered a gunshot wound. it seemed like a big attack was happening, so we wanted to keep the door locked. so i wasjust having a... must have been terrifying. it was terrifying — i was having a mental battle between either the idea

of an explosion coming through the floor, or us being on the street, which one do we do? so i shouted down and said, "what should we do?" one of the police officers said, "you have to get out "of the building now." it was an attack not just on individuals but on our way of life — the killers targeted people having fun, enjoying the freedoms of a diverse and liberal city. with daybreak, tales of bravery and heroism emerged from the horrors of the previous night. i heard truly remarkable stories of extraordinarily brave actions by officers on and off duty, who were first on the scene. i also heard of colleagues from other emergency services, and members of the public who ran towards the danger as this incident unfolded. many, many people risked their own safety to help others, and to treat those seriously injured, and indeed to confront

the suspects involved. the prime minister addressed the nation from downing street, paying tribute to the work of the emergency services. on behalf of the people of london and the whole country, i want to thank and pay tribute to the professionalism and bravery of the police and the emergency services, and to the courage of members of the public who defended themselves and others from the attackers. and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, and with their friends, families and loved ones. but mrs may was notjust reflecting a nation‘s shock — she promised the outrage would be met by a response. it is time to say, enough is enough. everybody needs to go about their lives as they normally would. our society should continue to function in accordance with our values. but when it comes to taking

on extremism and terrorism, things need to change. london is still trying to come to terms with the awful events, to understand what happened. this was an appalling act of terror, where innocent londoners and visitors were enjoying a night out in london bridge and borough market, and were deliberately targeted by these cowardly terrorists. barricaded in bars and restaurants for two hours or more, police finally let people leave for home in the early hours, hands on their heads just in case an attacker was still among them. the armed police came in, and that was really scary. i don‘t know what i expected when they opened the door, but they shouted to us to put our hands on our heads and to leave. we had to keep our hands visible. ijust want people to know this is not what london is like, we are a strong, welcome,

caring city, and this is a terrible thing to happen, but it won't stop us living our lives, really. london bridge is falling down, the song goes — but london appears determined to stand up to those who would divide it. one of those who witnessed the violent and distressing scenes last night on london bridge was hollyjones, a bbcjournalist. she‘s been describing how she narrowly missed being hit by the van as it struck other pedestrians around her. holly has been giving her account to our special correspondent lucy manning. a walk across a bridge, but some didn‘t make it to the other side. before the police, the ambulance. there were tourists taking photos, couples holding hands, and hollyjones crossing the bridge, late to meet friends for a drink. today, the sun, the park — people smiling.

things she thought she would never see. the van was zigzagging along the pavement, and it looked like it was aiming, from my opinion, for groups of people. he hit two people in front of me that were about five metres in front, swerved back round again. i don‘t know how i did it or what i did, but i got out the way — i don‘t know if ijumped or if i ran — and i remember moving and watching the van drive into the couple that were behind me, and obviously hit them. you know, ijust remember thinking that was so close, that was so close for me. and the screams, it was like a shrill. i have never heard kind of like a fear like it, but even so, i just ran towards the victims. the lady who was behind me was the closest person, so naturally ijust ran to her, told her i spoke french, asked her if she spoke english,

she said she didn‘t, ijust kept telling her everything was ok, i was holding her hand, and because i realised the person was not with her, she kept asking, where‘s my boyfriend ? i just shouted at the pedestrian next to me, who wasn‘t injured, i said, look over the river, can you see anyone in the water? and at that point, that‘s when she started shouting to alert the boats to say, there might be someone in there. your first thought was to help, it wasn‘t to run away and get out of there? i did what anyone else would have done in my situation. i almost feel quite fortunate that i was with that lady, because there were several other casualties on the bridge who were... it‘s indescribable, the state they were in. you never think you‘re going to see something like that. you ok? yeah. must have been really, really tough to see. it was, but as i say,

i‘m just so incredibly lucky. so, so incredibly lucky. i am just glad that i was... i‘m glad i was there to help people. i‘m just glad that i could have... i am happy that i was there to help, and just try and stay as calm and professional and just get on with things. holly was one of the first to call 999, and the police have interviewed her as a significant witness. when you saw the driver, you looked into the driver‘s eyes. yep. i saw the driver of the vehicle, and definitely intentional, he didn‘t look scared, just focused, and i‘d almost like to say the word "demented", that‘s what he looked like, and at this point, that was when he was heading straight towards me. and how do you feel, being in london now, given what you‘ve experienced last night? i plead with people not to be scared, not to be angry, because this is exactly what those people want us to feel.

and we have to stand together — go home, tell yourfriends and family you love them, and carry on doing exactly what you are doing. you‘ve obviously had just the luckiest escape. yeah. how do you feel, thinking back to those events last night? i am just so grateful and thankful for everything i have. just so, so lucky, you know? it was one metre away. and i‘m just so grateful, so thankful. i‘ll never take my life for granted. hollyjones there. four police officers were among those injured in the course of the attack. one was off duty, and was stabbed as he struggled with one of the attackers. another was a british transport police officer who, despite being unarmed, confronted one of the suspects. it‘s been confirmed that

people from france, spain, australia and new zealand are also among those injured. tonight, the first victim has been named as christine archibald who was from canada. our correspondent sarah campbell reports on the people caught up in last night‘s attack. daniel o‘neill, who‘s 23, is recovering in hospital, one of the many pub and restaurant—goers attacked at random. the shock and anger is palpable from his mother. he‘d just stepped outside the barfor a second, and a man ran up to him and said, "this is for my family, this is for islam," and stuck a knife straight in him. he‘s got a seven—inch scar going from his belly round to his back. i‘m still in shock, i still can‘t quite believe it‘s happened. absolutely senseless, the attacks. and these people say they‘re doing it in the name of god, which is an absolute joke. the first commandment is "thou shalt not kill." all faiths share that belief.

if it wasn‘t religion, they‘d find some other excuse. they‘re callous, they‘re barbaric. and they‘re absolute cowards. there are many more victims. brett freeman, a father of three, was stabbed three times. geoff ho is currently in intensive care after being stabbed in the neck. he tried to help a wounded bouncer. that is him all over. that is the frightening thing with him, he focuses on other people. he loves other people, and if he can help, he will help. initially, the injured were taken to five different hospitals across london, including here at st thomas‘s. this is a cosmopolitan city, and that‘s very much reflected in the nationalities of those who found themselves caught up in last night‘s attack. it is now known that a french

citizen was killed, and a canadian woman known as christine archibald. herfamily search woman known as christine archibald. her family search would have known no understanding of the callous cruelty that caused her death. new zealander oliver dowling, according to a facebook post by his sister, has been operated on after being stabbed multiple times. australian candice hedge, who reportedly worked in a local restaurant, was having a meal with her boyfriend when she was attacked. also injured, four police officers — one from the british transport police, and three from the metropolitan police force. one of the met officers, who was off duty at the time, tackled one of the armed men, and remains in a serious condition. the emergency services have been praised for the quick response, both during the attack and in the aftermath when so many lay injured. people feel tremendous sympathy with the victims. it could not have been foreseen, and clearly the patients we re foreseen, and clearly the patients were extremely shocked in the

non—medical sense. were extremely shocked in the non-medical sense. this 19-year-old american student fountain self desperately trying to help stem the flow of blood from a man who was hit in the head by a stray bullet. we knew we had to stop this overwhelming rush of blood from the wound. we knew that we need to apply pressure onto it to stop it at least a little bit, and that is when we took off my belt and used it as a tourniquet to stop the flow of blood. for you surprised to hear he had survived? i was, blood. for you surprised to hear he had survived? iwas, i could blood. for you surprised to hear he had survived? i was, i could not sleep last night wondering whether he made it. to find out that he did isa he made it. to find out that he did is a huge relief. the list of the victims injured or killed in the attack will grow longer, each one an innocent victim. the latest information is that 48 people were injured in last night‘s attack on london bridge and in borough market, 21 of them sustained serious injuries and they‘re being treated

at several hospitals in the london area. our health editor hugh pym is at kings college hospital in south london. can you give us the latest on the figures for the injured you have?m those 48 taken to hospital, 36 are still there, including some here at kings college hospital. 21 are in critical care, some very seriously injured. and the hospital with the largest number of people is this one. a short time ago theresa may paid a visit. this hospital is part ofa paid a visit. this hospital is part of a major trauma network. they know their precise roles in this situation. they have well rehearsed plans for this scenario that unfolded last night. the london ambulance service knows precisely

where to take casualties too. that is what happened last night. the london ambulance service very quickly on the scene. six minutes the first paramedics took to get there. that all went entirely according to plan. hospitals have major incident plans to bring in extra staff overnight. they did not know how many casualties they had to deal with but brought in extra doctors and nurses that went according to plan as well. the head of nhs england said he paid tribute to the professionalism of staff and their bravery as they move towards danger as they went about their business of tending to patients. as we mentioned earlier, police raided several properties in barking in east london and arrested 12 people in connection with last night‘s attack. one of the homes raided is believed to be where one of the attackers lived.

our special correspondent ed thomas has the latest on the extensive police investigation. tonight, the focus of the police investigation — a block of flats in barking. women escorted from the building. these pictures were taken by those living inside. armed police surround them, lying on the floor with their hands behind their backs. so far, 12 people have been arrested. the bbc also understands one of the london attackers who died had lived here. we are not naming him at the request of the police, who say it could jeopardise their investigation. but we‘ve spoken to this man, who knew him. he says over the past two years the attacker became more and more extreme. we spoke about a particular attack that happened. like most radicals, he had a justification for everything. for everything and anything. and that day i realised that i need to contact the authorities. this man would only speak to the bbc‘s asian network

if we protected his identity and changed his voice. he used to listen to a lot of musa jibril. i‘ve heard this stuff, and it‘s very radical. i‘m surprised some of this stuff is still on youtube and easily accessible. i phoned the anti—terrorist hotline. i spoke to the gentleman, i told him about our conversation and why i think he‘s been radicalised. the friend also claims the alleged attacker was not arrested after he was reported, and was allowed to keep his passport. i did my bit. i know a lot of people did, but the authorities didn‘t do their bit. this couple said they also reported the same man to the police more than two years ago after he tried to befriend their children. the message was clear. if you were not muslim, you were basically going to hell. he

said to me, the kids need to be saved. saved from what? from this world. we still do not know if any chances to stop these men were missed. another focus is chances to stop these men were missed. anotherfocus is on chances to stop these men were missed. another focus is on a search for evidence and answers. this is not the heart of the investigation. it started with anti—terrorist laws after the attack and forensic teams are now focused on this ground floor flat on this block. and this east ham this evening. armed officers trained their guns at the windows. this investigation is farfrom over. our home affairs correspondent daniel sandford is at new scotland yard. what has been established so far? police made good progress today. they quickly identified the three

main suspects, the three men they had already shot dead, that allowed them to get to barking to rate this two addresses in north—east london and arrested 12 people, seven women and arrested 12 people, seven women and five men, but one of those men has since been released. whether or not any of that group will be charged, iam not not any of that group will be charged, i am not so sure because they were known associates and family members the police got too quickly to question, but it may not ultimately lead to charges. we also learnt a lot about the new reality of police and counterterrorism last night. it took eight armed officers firing 50 rounds to prevent any further loss of life. it was an unprecedented use of aggressive force by police in this country, but that has its risks. a member of the public being shot and injured, though thankfully not seriously so. we mentioned the fact it is a

comprehensive and extensive inquiry at this stage. talk to us about the next few days and the scope of the investigation as we look ahead. we can expect more raids and more arrests in the next few hours. that is inevitable as police learn more about these men and try to expand their knowledge about them. but as we discussed, three times this year, was this a group of men who plotted alone or did they have a wider group of people that were assisting them here in the uk? or were they guided from overseas? at this stage, police are not sure about the answers to those questions. there is also an important other aspect to the days and weeks ahead, and that will be reassurance because, after three attacks in three months, there is a concern amongst police, security services and government that members of the palm black will panic and worry whether police and security

including children. june 3rd, london. terrorists killed seven and injured dozens using truck and knives. armed police have spent years training for exactly these sort of marauding attacks. they now have more powerful weapons, better intelligence and a faster reaction time than ever before. what they are up against is a growing problem. the country needs to wake up to the fact this is an increasing threat, both globally and within our midst, in our communities here in the uk. this increasing threat needs to be confronted head—on. it is notjust about resources for intelligence agencies and the police, we need to confront the ideology and theology driving death threats. also driving it is the imminent loss of the is self—proclaimed caliphate in syria and iraq. after two years, jihadists looks to be driven out of mosul and rack. they are calling for revenge attacks in europe.

it says the west is damned byjihadists what ever it does. we are blamed by jihadists, like iraq. when we do not intervene, like in syria, we are blamed byjihadists for not caring about muslim lies. anything that is consistent is the identity crisis and the ideological narrative. that is something we can do something about. we need to foster the kind of society in which people feel they belong. the advice given by the metropolitan police to the public is blunt. in the event of a terrorist attack, they are telling people to run, tell and hide, at least until the threat is dealt with. the scale of the terrorist threat is daunting. 500 active plots under investigation and 3000 subject of interests being monitored. and a further 20,000 individuals in

a wider network. three terrorist attacks getting through in just three months throws and a comfortable spotlight on m15, the security service behind me. it is theirjob to try to provide the intelligence to stop these before they happen. they have helped to do that successfully 18 times in the past four years. now the scale of the problem facing this country is causing some to question whether they can do with what they are up against. gchq is engaged in a constant battle to break into terrorist communications. a former independent reviewer of terrorism legislation believes tech company should do more. there is a need for change in approach. a few years ago, one tech company said, we are merely a library. that won't do. there needs to be a law saying they are not merely a library. they are big companies. they have an economy is bigger than many nations. they have a responsibility to all

of us to ensure that unlawful, terrorist content does not appear on the internets anymore. tonight, britain remains at threat level severe, the second—highest below critical, meaning a further attack is thought highly likely. that threat is unlikely to subside soon. there are some new developments. gordon, what are the intelligence services telling you tonight? there has been a statement from so—called islamic state, claiming a security unit of its fighters carried out the london attacks. the group frequently claim attacks for which they were not involved in, but in this case, the security services will investigate this very seriously. they are looking at a number of elements of this attack. we have had three attacks in the last few months. in this case

though, you had to group of three people. the security services will wa nt to people. the security services will want to know what connected those people, but a group of friends or pa rt people, but a group of friends or part of some other group? were any of them known to the security services before? what triggered this attack? just yesterday, there was a propaganda poster from so—called islamic state which featured a picture of a white truck, a knife and a gun and called on people to kill civilians using these. was that the inspiration? it could have been seen by the group is an instruction to go ahead and carry out an attack. the security services will look at it closely and try to understand if there was contact with islamic state abroad, and that internet propaganda explains why you heard such a tough line from the prime minister about

the internet today. finally the threat level has not gone up to critical. we saw that after manchester where there were concerns about raw materials used to make bombs. it has not gone up in this case, if it goes up that would be a worrying sign that they think there are other people connected to this group. if it remains where it is, they will hope the threat from this group has passed, stops, but it still means that another terrorist attack by some of the group still highly likely. last night‘s attack happened just four days before the general election, which will go ahead as planned on thursday. national campaigning was suspended for the day by all major parties, except ukip. the prime minister insisted that established methods of tackling extremism had to change and that there‘d been "far too much tolerance of extremism in our country". our political correspondent alex forsyth reports on the political reaction to last night‘s attacks. for the second time in two weeks,

the flag‘s at half mast — a mark of respect. for the same reason, another pause from most parties in the election campaign. the politicians did come out to universally condemn this attack and praise the emergency services, and from the prime minister, this time, there was much tougher talk on tackling terrorism, too. we cannot and must not pretend that things can continue as they are. theresa may called for countries around the world to act to stop internet firms allowing extremism online. there‘ll be a review of the uk‘s counterterrorism strategy and, she warned, across society, there was too much tolerance of extremism. while the recent attacks are not connected by common networks, they are connected in one important sense — they are bound together by the single, evil ideology of islamist extremism that preaches hatred, sows division

and promotes sectarianism. from here, it seems, an attempt to offer more than platitudes about the country‘s protection but, at this stage, still little tangible detail about what that means, not least for some muslim communities, who too have a sense of anger. muslim communities across the uk are outraged at what's happened. we've had three terror attacks in the last three months, and that's something that's intolerable for anyone who lives in this country. we want to work together with our government, with our civil society, to tackle terrorism wherever we find it. labour‘s answer criticising the conservatives. the party leader is keen to quash any perception he would be soft on terror. the police should use whatever force

is necessary to protect and save lives as they did last night and in westminster in march. all parties are determined democracy won‘t be derailed. the election will take place on thursday, the preparations continue, the campaigns will resume in full tomorrow, and now, again, the nation‘s safety at the heart of the debate. ukip says there‘s been an unwillingness to confront extremism in the past. we‘ve got to fight fire with fire. i wouldn‘t take anything off the table in dealing with these people. there‘s a small number of people in this country who quite clearly hate who we are, hate the way we live and want to destroy our democracy. they are a cancer and they need to be cut out. in scotland, a warning — robust action must not lead to the persecution of any community. the terrorists win if we allow ourselves to become divided and they do so if we allow our freedoms and our civil liberties to be undermined. that is what acts of terrorism

are designed to do — to divide and to undermine the values that define who we are. this once again has become a balancing act between the need for security and action and the protection of civil liberties. what we must do is work together to make sure that we tackle terrorism in a very practical and effective way, and do it together. what we must not do is to trade away our freedoms, our great british freedoms, in response to the cowardly acts of these pathetic people last night. if we did that, they would have won. but today, in the fight against terrorism, any sense of victory feels far away, any answers hard to come by. one thing many here are holding onto — an attack designed to undermine democracy has only strengthened the will of those determined to protect it. live to downing street and our political editor,

change their way of life? our special correspondent fergal keane has been asking londoners for their thoughts. it is not in the nature of london to succumb to silence in the face of violence. there is the energy of the present. and too much history. too much stored in the city‘s long memory for panic. defiant. i am carrying on as normal, going to work today, and that is what london should do. people are very resilient. everybody is shock today, but we all knew it was a possibility because we do not live behind tall fences all the time, we do not put up fences all the time, we do not put up all odds on our pavements, we

man recently graduated with a first in law and hopes to work in the city. she believes the attacks must lead to greater integration. we need to make more of an effort to integrate, whether you are muslim or not, and to come together because the point of attacks like this is they want to divide everyone, they wa nt they want to divide everyone, they want there to be separate communities. the very same questions we re communities. the very same questions were posed in the wake of the other bombs but extreme islamic ideology continued, declaring a religious obligation to slaughter in revenge for western action in the middle east and because the lives of unbelievers were considered worthless. this is a muslim survivor of the bombings who has been honoured for her work fighting extremism. it was something that was brushed under the carpet so we're talking about it more, but what we now need is a whole community approach, and i have to say, within

deal now depends on the ability of the security forces to contain the violence and on the capacity of political and community leaders to tackle the roots of extremism. vigilance and knowledge that the struggle ahead will be long and fought on many fronts. world leaders have expressed their support and sympathy for the people of the uk and their outrage at what‘s happened. germany, france and russia sent messages of condolence. so too did president trump, but he combined his with criticism of the mayor of london, sadiq khan. our diplomatic correspondent james landale reports now on the global reaction. this evening in berlin, a demonstration of solidarity with london. a symbol of european unity and peace. over in brussels, the

flag stood once again at half—mast as leaders around the world expressed their familiar litany of shock and sympathy. we sent our heartfelt sympathy and love to the victims and their families. this attack is yet another cruel example of the new reality with which we live. other leaders used social media to express their horror and solidarity. president putin of russia spoke of the cruelty and cynicism of the attack. and chancellor merkel said that, in the fight against terrorism, germany is resolutely at britain‘s side. in rome, the pope led prayers for peace that were echoed by other christian leaders. translation: may the spirit give peace to the entire world, heal the plagues of war and of terrorism that even tonight, in london, hit innocent civilians. it is right that when there is great evil, that we feel anger, but that anger must be turned on...its head, into a commitment tojustice, and not against any group of people, especially members

of the islamic community. in new york, the authorities increased security across the city, particularly in areas full of pedestrians and tourists, like here in times square. donald trump called theresa may to offer his condolences. but on twitter, the president used the incident to renew his demand for a travel ban on visitors from six mostly muslim countries. and he also appeared to criticise the mayor of london, sadiq khan, for saying there was no need to be alarmed. in fact, mr khan was urging people not to be worried by the increased police presence on london‘s river and its streets. his spokesman said he had more important things to do than respond to mr trump‘s ill informed tweet. from paris, which has seen its share of terror attacks, president macron called theresa may to say that france was at britain‘s side. france‘s prime minister visited a crisis centre monitoring events for french citizens caught up

injured in an attack carried out by three men. it was britain‘s second major incident in the space of 12 days. it began just after 10 o‘clock last night when a hired van was used to knock down pedestrians on london bridge. three men wearing fake suicide vests then left the vehicle and began stabbing people in pubs and bars in nearby borough market. within 8 minutes the three men had been confronted and shot dead by police. a member of the public was also injured in the exchanges. during the day 12 people were arrested in barking in east london following a series of raids. and the prime minister speaking in downing street called for a new approach to combat the "single evil ideology of islamist extremism". we start with our home editor mark easton, whose report does include some distressing images. clear the area now!

and a country cried — please not again. we are hearing tonight that british armed police have attended an incident at london bridge, we don‘t know anything more at this stage... atjust after ten last night, three men in a white van drove at speed across london bridge, determined to kill the spirit of the capital. oh, my god. a white van came speeding, 50 mph, it turned into the pavement, hit about three people in front of me. oh, my god! there was people just lying everywhere on the bridge, just people trying to help each other out, people bleeding, there wasjust blood everywhere. having deliberately mown down pedestrians, the three men got out of the van, knives in their hands, murder on their minds. he went and up and started stabbing

this girl, i couldn‘t do nothing, mate. they attacked her, and they stabbed another guy, they went up the road, i started going, "everybody go, terrorists," they were stabbing everyone. he just stabbed this person — if they got up, stabbed them again, move onto the next person. i was staring at them from the balcony, just thinking, how could someone do such a thing? armed police were on the scene within minutes, as the three men moved towards the bars and restaurants of borough market, packed with people on a warm summer‘s night. they were running in all the pubs and bars, stabbing people, i .

i was throwing things at them, pint glasses... people were throwing chairs, it seemed like chairs and glasses were going in both directions. these four friends were settling down for a meal in a mexican restaurant when the three knifemen arrived. three men came in, one pulled out a knife and stabbed one of the girls sitting closest to the door, i think she was only 17. i got a glimpse of a guy with a knife, and before i knew it the doors were shut, we were at the back of the restaurant. so you saw him? briefly, a glimpse. people were very scared, they began to run, knocking tables over to try to get out the way, and then very quickly, as we said, the men in the restaurant put the shutters down. in the early hours of this morning, claudia and liam, given refuge in a stranger‘s flat, told me what they saw from their apartmentjust above a pub the attackers are targeted on their killing spree. we looked out the window, people were running everywhere, we heard that there had been a stabbing...

it was when i saw lots of people running down into the underground that i thought it was more serious, because it was mass panic, notjust a fight, it was something serious. one young guy seemed to come out of the pub, and he was knocking on the window of the ambulance, saying, "you have to help my friend, he's been stabbed, he is in the pub..." whether that was inside or outside, i don't know, but he said "my friend's been stabbed. " there was another guy, probably in his 40s, on the other side of the ambulance, knocking on the other window, saying "i've been stabbed", and he was covered in blood, he said, "i've been stabbed five times, help me." he must have been in shock, because he seemed very calm. he had his shirt open, all this side was pure blood, it was just around his neck. he was knocking on the window saying, "you have to help me." at this time, police cars were still heading to london bridge, apparently unaware of where the attackers were. this one guy walked out in the road,

managed to grab the attention of one of the police cars and basically forced them down that road, saying, "you have to go down there, he's down there," and so this one police 4x4 screeched down stoney street, and then easily within five seconds there were six gunshots, or what sounded like six clear gunshots. gunfire. six rounds, two attackers dead. then, witnesses suggest, another volley of bullets as the third attacker was shot and killed, all within eight minutes of the first call to police. it seemed like a big attack was happening, so we wanted to keep the door locked. so i wasjust having a... must have been terrifying. it was terrifying — i was having a mental battle

between either the idea of an explosion coming through the floor or us being on the street, which one do we do? so i shouted down and said, "what should we do?" one of the police officers said, "you have to get out "of the building now." it was an attack notjust on individuals but on our way of life — the killers targeted people having fun, enjoying the freedoms of a diverse and liberal city. with daybreak, tales of bravery and heroism emerged from the horrors of the previous night. i heard truly remarkable stories of extraordinarily brave actions by officers on and off duty, who were first on the scene. i also heard of colleagues from other emergency services, and members of the public who ran towards the danger as this incident unfolded. many, many people risked their own safety to help others, and to treat those seriously injured — and indeed to confront the suspects involved.

the prime minister addressed the nation from downing street, also paying tribute to the work of the emergency services. on behalf of the people of london and the whole country, i want to thank and pay tribute to the professionalism and bravery of the police and the emergency services, and to the courage of members of the public who defended themselves and others from the attackers. and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, and with their friends, families and loved ones. but mrs may was notjust reflecting a nation‘s shock — she promised the outrage would be met by a response. it is time to say, enough is enough. everybody needs to go about their lives as they normally would. our society should continue to function in accordance with our values. but when it comes to taking on extremism and terrorism, things need to change.

london is still trying to come to terms with the awful events, to understand what happened. this was an appalling act of terror, where innocent londoners and visitors were enjoying a night out in london bridge and borough market, and were deliberately targeted by these cowardly terrorists. barricaded in bars and restaurants for two hours or more, police finally let people leave for home in the early hours, hands on their heads just in case an attacker was still among them. they were shouting, put your hands on your head, were visible. london bridge is falling down, as

the song goes, but london will stand up the song goes, but london will stand up to those who divide it. four police officers were injured during the attack, one was off duty, and one was stabbed. another was a british transport police officer who despite being unarmed confronted one of the suspects. it has been confirmed that people from france, spain, canada, and new zealand, are among those injured. the first named today who has died is christine archibald from canada. daniel o‘neill, who‘s 23, is recovering in hospital, one of the many pub and restaura nt—goers attacked at random. the shock and anger

is palpable from his mother. he‘d just stepped outside the barfor a second, and a man ran up to him and said, "this is for my family, this is for islam," and stuck a knife straight in him. he‘s got a seven—inch scar going from his belly round to his back. i‘m still in shock, i still can‘t quite believe it‘s happened. absolutely senseless, the attacks. and these people say they‘re doing it in the name of god, which is an absolute joke. the first commandment is "thou shalt not kill." all faiths share that belief. if it wasn‘t religion, they‘d find some other excuse. they‘re callous, they‘re barbaric. and they‘re absolute cowards. there are many more victims. geoff ho is currently in intensive care after being stabbed in the neck. today, colleagues at the sunday express newspaper described him as an absolutely first—class reporter, and a fine and decent man. that if he. he will not run away

from anything. that is the funny thing, he focuses on other people. if he can help, he will help. initially, the injured were taken to five different hospitals across london, including here at st thomas‘. this is a cosmopolitan city, and that‘s very much reflected in the nationalities of those who found themselves caught up in last night‘s attack. it is now known a french woman was killed, along with a canadian woman called christine archibald. new zealander oliver dowling, according to a facebook post by his sister, has been operated on after being stabbed multiple times. australian candice hedge, who reportedly worked in a local restaurant, was having a meal with her boyfriend when she was attacked. also injured, four police officers —

one from the british transport police, and three from the metropolitan police force. one of the met officers, who was off duty at the time, tackled one of the armed men, and remains in a serious condition. the emergency services have been praised for their quick response, both during the attack and in its aftermath, with so many injured. people obviously felt tremendous sympathy for the victims, as we a lwa ys sympathy for the victims, as we always do. it could have happened to any of us. it could not be foreseen. clearly, the patients were extremely shocked. this 19 year robbed american student found himself desperately trying to stop the flow of blood from a man hit on the head. we need to stop this overwhelming rush of people, we thought. and we needed to apply pressure to this 1—person‘s head to stem the blood. i used his shirt as they —— a

tourniquet. were you surprised he survived? yes. i was wondering about whether he survived and not. the list of the names and faces of those injured or killed in the attack will grow longer, each one an innocent victim. sarah campbell, bbc news. as we mentioned earlier, police raided several properties in barking in east london and arrested 12 people in connection with last night‘s attack. one of the homes raided is believed to be where one of the attackers lived. our special correspondent, ed thomas, has the latest on the extensive police investigation. tonight, the focus of the police investigation, a block of flats in barking. this video clip was taken by people living inside. armed men put people
