£5 million street are confirming a £5 million fund has been made available to pay for emergency supplies for food, clothes and other costs, too, and we are being told that emergency fund as part of a package of measures thatis as part of a package of measures that is going to involve the treasury, the department for work and pensions, too, in orderto provide support and help to people who have been directly affected by this tragedy. the prime minister in a statement has said she heard individual stories this morning when she went to the hospital to see survivors who she said, she said she spoke with people who ran from the firing only be close they were wearing. they have been left with nothing, she said, no money, no bank card, no means of caring for their children or relatives. she said the package she was announcing was to give people immediate support to ca re give people immediate support to care for themselves and their loved ones and she said they will continue to look at what more needs to be done. she added that everyone affected by this tragedy needs reassurance that the government is
5:46 pm
there for them at this terrible time and that is what i am determined to provide. of course, we saw theresa may visiting the just and westminster hospital. that's relatively close to the scene of this tragedy. she was there this morning, speaking to people who had survived the fire. yesterday, she went to the scene of the accident —— incident and she spake to emergency services and some charities, too, but there was criticism that she hadn't spoken to the victims themselves. we today we saw her visiting the hospital but also chairing a meeting specifically looking at the response and how the victims were being supported. after that meeting, we now have this confirmation of this £5 million emergency fund and i understand that separately other supporters now being given to the local authority, the royal borough of kensington and chelsea, which of course is dealing directly with the situation on the
5:47 pm
ground. of course, there is a whole series of layers of accountability. on the local level, there is the developer, the local authority and also housing associations. at the government and things, lots of questions being asked of the government. indeed, we had an open mayor —— an open letter published today by the mayor of london, sadiq khan, who wrote to the prime minister with a series of concerns he had having spoken to people on the ground, with issues about the coordination of organisation on the ground, the support that was being given to the victims there, but also theissue given to the victims there, but also the issue of the victims and the numberand the issue of the victims and the number and identification of the victims that he was told was increasing the grief that people we re increasing the grief that people were feeling because they were not getting enough information. he also added there were concerns about people who live in similar high—rise blocks in the area and concerns that those residents needed reassurance that they were indeed safe in their
5:48 pm
blocks. he did welcome the government's announcement of a public enquiry, that the government announced yesterday would be judge led. it will be an independent enquiry but he added that they would need to be some kind of intermittent report, because sometimes these public enquiries can go on for some time. the findings take some time to report back and he said we need an interim report over the summer so that those who have been affected would at least get some answers by the summer. just in the last few minutes it's been confirmed that the government has announced this £5 million emergency fund that's going to be made available to those directly affected by the fire that will be made available to pay for emergency supplies of food, clothes and other costs, too, jane. all right, eleanor, a quick final thought from you about the visit itself, about the fact that theresa may, we are hearing, has visited the
5:49 pm
area, has met local people, given that there has been criticism earlier in the week that she hadn't done so earlier in the week. she met members of the emergency services but there was a perception, a feeling, and there was anger that she had not met people more directly caught up in this. just your thoughts politically that it appears that a visit along those lines has now happened 7 that a visit along those lines has now happened? well, yesterday, theresa may visited the scene and we saw those images of her talking to the emergency services, talking to the emergency services, talking to the firefighters who had been working to help people in the fire and there was criticism at the time from labour that she hadn't met some of the victims directly herself. we we re of the victims directly herself. we were told there were issues of security surrounding why she hadn't spoken directly to some of the victims. we did see images ofjeremy corbyn down at the site yesterday
5:50 pm
and infact corbyn down at the site yesterday and in fact even hugging somebody who had been involved. i think the sense we got from the government todayis sense we got from the government today is them trying to really show they are run the brantford, they are trying to support people. clearly lots of very difficult questions for the government, notjust on the financial side of things, the logistical side of things, but economic all and emotional side of things as well. i think that's why we have seen theresa may not only chairing the meeting this afternoon in order to work out how exactly victims were being supported, but also going to the hospital this morning. we had the communities secretary also visiting the scene earlier this morning, so i think there has been, it feels, at least, it's like stepping up today. but number ten and sources inside number ten stressing that the government is dealing with the situation. it is asking the questions just ask to how victims are being supported and obviously we did see the prime minister at the hospital this
5:51 pm
morning talking to some of those who have been impacted and some of those who survived the tragic event in the last 2a, 48 hours. who survived the tragic event in the last 24, 48 hours. eleanor, for now, thank you. it's just worth bringing m, thank you. it's just worth bringing in, ithink, thank you. it's just worth bringing in, i think, on that note, some pictures that have come to us in the last few minutes of theresa may. this is, i believe, theresa may at the end of that visit that eleanor was talking about, giving you an idea of the amount of security that was necessary here. a good degree of security always follows the prime minister anyway, that goes without saying, but so much anxiety around this particular visit and that gives you a flavour of the scene there. shouting.
5:52 pm
afairdegree of a fair degree of shouting and protesting that, you will be able to pick up on the microphones there. our correspondent is that saint clements, sorry, iam being our correspondent is that saint clements, sorry, i am being told thatis clements, sorry, i am being told that is then clements church, but let us speak to mark who has been following the investigation, the desperate search for answers as to what caused this fire. please bring us what caused this fire. please bring us up today, mark. you get the sense of the hostility that some people here feel towards the prime minister over what is perceived to be a delayed response, a delay in visiting the residents. we are told she visited saint clements church just south of grenfell tower behind me and she had to leap through a side door at the end, a heavy police
5:53 pm
presence there, with the chance of cowards from the crowd as she was, in the words of some, bundled into a car by police. that's the sense of acrimony there is from some people towards her and you do hear that from people around here today. there isa from people around here today. there is a feeling of immense frustration to war the number of people, towards the borough for what is perceived to be scrimping, saving on the cladding on the outside of the tower that could have been behind the fire. the press reporting today the type of used was of a plastic ore nature, £2 cheaper than a mineral ore version, so that was the kind that with that on grenfell tower and that could have been behind this. also, of course, the huge fear that others might be affected by this and similar towers right across the
5:54 pm
country, so an announcement of an audit of those countries by the department for communities and local government to assess whether or not a similar type of cladding was seized. and also a lot of the air here about missing relatives and friends. the bbc understanding that at least 70 people now could be missing and dead. the police refusing so far to put a number on the missing. really, the reverberations from the disaster, not just reverberations from the disaster, notjust on reverberations from the disaster, not just on those reverberations from the disaster, notjust on those directly reverberations from the disaster, not just on those directly affected but those the ring for their fate in what many people are calling death traps right across the country. mark, for now, thank you. let's return to the town hall where the protest has been taking place in the last hour or so. let's return to our correspondent dan johnson. dan, bring us up today. for more than two hours now people have been protesting on the steps of kensington and chelsea borough council offices. very loud and clear
5:55 pm
message to the council that people are not happy with the response that they have seen to this disaster and they have seen to this disaster and they want more action —— more action and answers to some of their questions. we can get the feeling is some people who live close by. you we re some people who live close by. you were actually born in grenfell tower? i was, were actually born in grenfell tower? iwas, yes. how were actually born in grenfell tower? i was, yes. how are people feeling today? we are angry. we want to know how many people are actually dead. no one has come out from the council or from the tmo. i could be tmo today and asked them for storage space for the items we have been given. they wouldn't offer it and they wouldn't give me a reason why they wouldn't give me a reason why they couldn't give me the community hall that they went out every single day for profit. right now, the leader of the council is up there in his office and they will not give us answers. how his office and they will not give us answers. how many his office and they will not give us answers. how many people have died? why are people being rehoused outside of london even know there
5:56 pm
was a meeting in parliament the other is a promising us that wouldn't happen? we need answers now. the authorities would say that confirming the identities of those who have died is an important process which will take time. that's true, but we know how many flaws they wearing that building. they got to the 12th floor at five o'clock in the morning. they couldn't get any higher. there are more than 100 people dead. that's 50 children at least. you need to be honest with us. least. you need to be honest with us. we're not stupid. we just want truthful answers. that's all we're asking for. the council have said have made temporary housing available and they will put proper housing in if they can. if i good enough? no, it's not good enough because they are moving people away from their family and friends. there is no thought for them, there is nothing for them after what they've been proved. they need to be kept here. theresa may hasjust announced another £5 million to be released
5:57 pm
immediately to help the victims. that is not enough. we have raised almost that much i now crowdfunding page. we have done that at the community. they spent £10 million bidding on cladding that burned those people alive. £10 million so £5 million is not enough. the residents asked for the people —— for the cladding not to be added and they still went ahead and did it, they still went ahead and did it, they ignored them, and they killed people. thank you, ladies, we appreciate it. you have had your chance to get your message across and that's what people are doing here. for a time people got into the boy a of the council offices and their message to the council themselves. the police had to push themselves. the police had to push them back. very much an emotional crowd, tensions running quite high, and you can understand that people are upset and want answered, with broader issues to be looked at here. clearly deep emotions about the
5:58 pm
inequality in this borough here and the feeling the council has not been serving them. they want to use this asa serving them. they want to use this as a turning point to really redefine the life of all people in this community. danjohnson, this community. dan johnson, thank you this community. danjohnson, thank you very much, at the protest outside kensington and chelsea town hall. as we said in the last few minutes, it has been announced that the prime minister has said there will be an emergency £5 million fund to help deal with emergency problems, housing, clothing, food, and people can apply for money from that, people who are directly affected by that appalling tragedy. much more from their on the six o'clock news. i will leave you for now with a look at the weather prospects wherever you are in the country. it evening. we saw some sunshine today in places and others saw quite a lot of clout. the cloud was biggest in scotland, bringing outbreaks of rain. in the south, some good spells of sunshine and with that very high pollen levels
5:59 pm
across much of england and wales and into northern ireland and just about into northern ireland and just about into southern scotland, too. quite a sniffily evening out there with a lot of sunshine and light winds as well. there is sunshine and light training in the west of scotland, but a very warm evening. no less than 1670 degrees by the end of the night, so a warm night. in. —— 16 or i7 night, so a warm night. in. —— 16 or 17 degrees. away from the rain in scotland, the sunshine and the warmth are well spread. it could go as high as 28 degrees in the london area, probably going a bit higher than that on sunday, probably hitting 30 degrees in the south—east corner. the grandfather tower fire, the
6:00 pm
the grandfather towerfire, the bbc understands the number of people dead or missing now is around 70. —— the grenfell tower fire. anger around it is growing. hundreds of protesters storm kensington town hall, demanding justice for the victims. we are in the richest borough in the uk and in this very borough in the uk and in this very borough we have a building where some of the poorest people lived and the safety measures were totally inadequate. and they are working as fast as they can to recover bodies. what we are all doing is, as quickly and with as much dignity as we can, recovering those that are still inside.
