5:01 am
i was in bed and i started to hear a lot of shouting outside. seven sisters road is incredibly noisy, so that's not news. but when the shouting got louder and louder i went to have a look at what was going at the windows and in the access road across my block of flats, with many people gathered outside. i don't have a good idea of numbers, maybe 200 people? i'm not sure. many, many people, enough to block at least half of seven sisters road. as well as the little access road. they were very nervous and shouting very loud. there was no fighting at all. they were nervous and shouting and i could see that they were waving. later on i found out they were waving at a police car stuck in traffic further down. and in a matter of seconds the police car came here, stopped by them
5:02 am
and then theyjust dragged someone, pushed someone towards the police. "take him, take him!" and then the police put this man inside the car. so to be clear, the crowd, in essence, offered up this person to the police? is that right? yes. there were very nervously pushing him towards the police, telling the police officer who was confused, they did not know what had happened, so they were telling the police officers to take him, take him. so i understood that... i just found out later on there was a car running people over. i did not see what actually happened. when you say the crowd, am i right in thinking that these are people who would have been attending finsbury park mosque? i think so, because the mosque is around the next corner
5:03 am
and they usually gather in this corner where they meet after the prayers. just to talk a bit, i guess. especially now it is summer it is so hot. it is ramadan as well so they stay later, i guess. so there were more people gathered in the corner. it was definitely the incident that made so many of them run out. they were the ones handing him over to police. cynthia, in terms of casualties, could you see how many people had been hurt and injured? i saw it least three or four injured people on the pavement, being treated and helped by police, from my floor and my point of view there is the police van blocking my view, i saw it least
5:04 am
two people on the floor. it didn't look good. they were giving them cardiac massage until the ambulance and paramedics arrived. it looked really bad but i hope they're fine. an incredibly distressing sight to witness, cynthia. what can you see now in terms of the police operation? the situation is pretty calm now there are many many police cars here still. i can't see if there are any ambulances left. there are still many police cars. the area is isolated and the road is completely closed so there is no traffic. there are at least, from what i can see... 15 police cars? maybe more. i can see police walking around, talking to people, probably trying to get witnesses, i guess. the people have dispersed.
5:05 am
there's nobody outside the mosque any more. the helicopter is still flying above. what happened to the man who was offered up by the crowd to the police? as you say, they asked the police to arrest him. what happened to that man? i think he was taken by the police. i didn't really see... there was so, so many people. because i'm in a window in a flat on the other side of the road, i could see many heads together, very nervously. i could see they were pushing someone. and then someone entered the police car but i could not see their face or anything. a few minutes later i saw, i think, someone posted on twitter, footage, because so many people were filming with their phones near there. i didn't go downstairs because i was a bit scared.
5:06 am
i was just watching from a window andi i was just watching from a window and i saw so many people with mobile phones. i think one of them posted it on twitter and you can see the man's face clearly and he said that that man had run over people with his car. that's all i know, actually, from what happened. so you heard that from someone down on the street, cynthia? no. i heard that from somebody who posted a video on the internet. so i saw the scene, but from far away, this man had exactly the same thing, but the footage was taken from the middle of the crowd. iamjoined by i am joined by sally bundock in the studio as we deal with this major breaking story coming from north london. an update on the casualty figures. it has been confirmed one person died at the scene in north london and eight more people have
5:07 am
been taken to hospital with their injuries. you can see live pictures of north london where the area's been cordoned off. we've had a statement from prime minister theresa may, who has described the situation as: just to say as well that she has said the london mosque is being treated as a potential terrorist attack. that the latest line coming from the british prime minister saying the police are treating the incident at a london mosque as a terrorist attack —— that's the. we've heard from opposition leaderjeremy corbyn. he tweeted a short time ago, saying: ina
5:08 am
in a further statement from the british prime minister, she is to chairan british prime minister, she is to chair an emergency response meeting later on monday after that deadly mosque incident. there we are, the british prime minister saying this is being potentially treated as a terrorist incident and there will be an emergency response meeting later on monday. we can speak to our correspondent in north london jane—frances we can speak to our correspondent in north londonjane—frances kelly. what is happening now? there are a lot of police vans and a lot of police activity. the area has been cordoned off, it's been cordoned off since early this morning. inaudible... they say it went into a
5:09 am
group of worshippers who were helping an elderly man who had fallen down. he was in muslim clothing. we know that there were a lot of... inaudible. .. clothing. we know that there were a lot of... inaudible... in this area people had been going to prayers. they were out during their fast and so on. inaudible. .. they were out during their fast and so on. inaudible... eyewitnesses said two other men escaped from the van... inaudible studio:jane, said two other men escaped from the
5:10 am
van... inaudible studio: jane, i can apologise to the viewers, we can't hearjane—frances kelly very clearly right now, she is at the scene keeping us up to date with what's happening where she is and keeping us across happening where she is and keeping us across the developments. let's hear from the muslim council for britain. it has commented on the incident, citing witnesses and videos online. in making its statement, it says: that is the statement from the muslin council of britain, they interpreted in all the events shortly after midnight in the uk in london. interesting what they say,
5:11 am
it shines with many eyewitnesses we have spoken to through the night, why aren't we yet calling this a terror attack? —— chines. we've heard from the prime minister that this is potentially being treated as a terrorist attack. through the night as we've been following this story, eyewitnesses say this was deliberately targeting worshippers as they left the mosque in north london. they are saying they felt it was a terrorist attack. we've heard from the muslim council for britain and the ramadan foundation that it is potentially being treated as a terrorist attack. let's listen to another man who described what happened when the incident took place. apparently they were helping an elderly gentleman that
5:12 am
had collapsed beforehand. the van turned left after people had been helping this man with no indication and theyjust hit the people. people were gathered around the van to lift the van up to get this by —— this guy from under. people started shouting. one of them got arrested. he was shouting i want to kill all muslims. literally he said that. word by word, he said it like this. i'm sure, guys, this is a terrorist attack, whether he's a muslim, whether he's a christian, this is a terrorist attack. tomorrow
5:13 am
i don't want to hear you saying he's got mental issues, that's not acceptable. all terrorists have mental issues then. use a terrorist, christian or muslim, no religion belongs to terrorism. terrorism has no religion. all of them are terrorists when they hurt or harm or kill people. this is terrorism. good morning, you're with bbc news. we are live in north london as an incident has been emerging shortly after midnight where a white van ploughed into people who were gathered not far away at all from the mosque in finsbury park were worshippers were coming out having spent an hour or so in the evening, praying, it is ramadan, the holy
5:14 am
month, these worshippers were leaving the mosque. a white van ploughed into people trying to help an elderly man who had fallen ill. it was happening near the mosque outside muslim welfare house in finsbury park. there was large crowds there, eyewitnesses saying it wasn't just crowds there, eyewitnesses saying it wasn'tjust men, there were also women. plenty of elderly people and some children. of course it is the holy month of ramadan. in terms of confirmed numbers, we are hearing from london ambulance service that eight patients have been taken to hospital following that incident in north london and one person died at the scene. the metropolitan police saying one man has been arrested, a 48—year—old van driver. he was detained by members of the public at the scene and then he was arrested. contrary to some reports through the night chines, they are saying there
5:15 am
are no reports of any persons having suffered any knife injuries. you can see live pictures on one side of the screen and footage of what emerged overnight on the other. the area is cordoned off at the moment in finsbury park. some of the main street is our cordoned off and some people haven't been able to get home this evening after leaving the mosque —— main streets. some people are gathered still. the day is dawning now. we are interrupting our normal programming at this time on bbc news to bring you this developing story that's been emerging sincejust developing story that's been emerging since just after midnight london time. a short while ago i spoke with muhbeen hussain, founder of british muslim youth — he has been at finsbury park to speak to witnesses there. it is not really anger, it is the
5:16 am
emotions are very high, and i've met with eyewitnesses who with their overtime time of the attack. we can't confirm anything that the moment but from what i'm hearing, the idea is a deliberate attack which is something on the ground, we condemned the attack as soon as it happened. you know, we stand and we heard about this and we prayed for the victims and there is real frustration but also emotions were really high. people who witnessed the attack, there is also solidarity as well which is quite important. people are very thankful that the police are there and doing their duty as well. this is such an important time of year, of course, isn't it? it is a very important time. what we are seeing, it hasn't even been a month since the
5:17 am
manchester attack took months, and we saw london bridge and borough market and days ago we saw grenfell tower sorry, you know, this is another attack that we have to face and during the time of ramadan where these people were actually going to ramadan prayers, night prayers that ta ke ramadan prayers, night prayers that take place, to do their prayer and get on with their worship and this is not something that many people wa nt to is not something that many people want to see, it was really emotional actually, being there, seeing the scene there. so sometimes, you know, i have been there, i have spoke to people and words cannot describe what is the feeling on the ground sometimes. do you think there was a sense that something like this was inevitable? we've heard from the muslim council of britain, saying that islamophobia has been on the increase. do you think this was inevitable or is it still shocking nonetheless? of course an attack
5:18 am
like this is always shopping. i mean, you look at this in two ways. in many ways, this was inevitable and what we expect because we have seen numerous times and what we expect because we have seen numerous times with islamophobia attacks and they are verbal abuse to real attacks on individuals and attack on muslims and taken as a retaliation in a sense for other attacks we have seen, manchester or london. those times, organisations like ourselves and many people actually all on the underground realised that their concentration should not be just on a retaliation but the victims so it hasn't really been a dimension to that really apart from brushing over it but there has been real sentiments, people have felt retaliation and we have seen that, so retaliation and we have seen that, so in many ways this is been seen coming by many people and it is why the frustration is high. i spoke to
5:19 am
an eyewitness out there who said victims of manchester and london bridge, this isn't about individual communities, this is about humanities, we as a nation coming together, and now we see an attack you and we want to see communities come together, the nation come together. this is an individual who went to the mosque, in an intel to mark —— unintelligible mark. he was thankful of the full entirety —— of the solidarity. the rest frustration in the early hours when the incident took place, we were fighting on the ground, there was frustration by ordinary people from the national media and now it is being covered quite vigorously throughout all of the networks but at the time they we re the networks but at the time they were saying we the networks but at the time they were saying we are the networks but at the time they were saying we are the reporters, why are there no police there? the rest frustration and there is a similar frustration that were shown recently in britain fell. ——
5:20 am
groenefeld. you are talking about frustration there. one of the witnesses told a police arrived incredibly quickly. i wonder what is the relationship like now they're on the relationship like now they're on the ground between the police and the ground between the police and the community who i guess some communities cannot go back to their homes? it is the only frustration, it is in motion and that is the reason why we have seen on the road, i have seen the relationship between people speak to police officers and speaking to police officers they are thankful i have seen people who who are congratulating offices for doing their duty and there is frustration on the ground but there are questions about whether there was an armed response actually turning up, but these police officers were there but these police officers were there but there was still frustration and in fact there was an frustration towards media outlets, there was frustration that we need to highlight this war, like we do everything else, but towards the police and the emergency services i found people were very thankful and
5:21 am
appreciated that they were there to keep them safe and we have been recording the response, we have spoken to eyewitnesses and we have accou nts spoken to eyewitnesses and we have a ccou nts of spoken to eyewitnesses and we have accounts of that. you are looking at live pictures coming from north london where nuj has started after another major incident. travolta police dealing with it there, —— metropolitan police. neither was on welfare house where the incident happened at 12:15am here in london after evening prayers as worshippers came out, a van drove towards them. at least eight people injured in the attack, one person killed and theresa may has called it a potential terrorist attack. an extremely busy time of year, the holy month of ramadan so at the time of this incident, people were coming out the mosque there at finsbury
5:22 am
park in north london in islington north. it is jeremy park in north london in islington north. it isjeremy corbyn's constituents lee, actually. we have heard from him who said he has been in touch with the various authorities overnight about what has been going on there and of course investigation is under way as to how and why and who, and the motive kind this but certainly lots of people being talked to by the media, by police, a lot of the worshippers who came out off the mosque are saying this is islamophobia. it needs to be labelled for what it is. of course the authorities are being extremely careful about how they treat the incident and what they say about the incident. just to bring you right up to date about what happened overnight, here is a report from greg olsen. this footage was recorded moments after a van mounted the pavement and struck several
5:23 am
pedestrians. the streets have been filled with worshippers who just left evening prayers at the finsbury park mosque and the nearby muslim welfare house. he looked straight, he looked straight like it was towards muslims. basically the target. he basically drove on the pavement, coming straight towards all the muslims, and as he is coming to them, he hit all of them. within hours, the muslim council of britain claimed the van was intentionally driven at worshippers. police say the driver, a 48—year—old man, was found by members of the public and handed over to officers to be arrested. he has since been taken to hospital as a precaution. arrested. he has since been taken to hospital as a precautionlj arrested. he has since been taken to hospital as a precaution. i was coming from the shops. and i saw a large cloud of people on the pavement. i learned after that a van that was standing up by the traffic lights was the van that mood the people down. several ambulances were on the scene soon afterwards with trauma teams treating the injured.
5:24 am
eight people were taken to hospital. in the early hour was of the morning, downing street issued a statement from theresa may, saying her thoughts are with all of those injured. the labour leaderjeremy corbyn who is also a local mp said he was totally shocked and had been in touch with mosques in the area as well as islington council. this morning, the scene remained sealed off as counterterrorism officers of the third —— for the third time in as many months, investigator vehicle being driven into people on london streets with deadly consequences. there we are. that is live pictures coming in from north london near the finsbury park mosque and neither muslim welfare house with this incident happened at 12:15am london time. to bring you right up to date, the metropolitan police are saying that a 48—year—old man believed to be the van driver referred to their ingrate dawson's report has been
5:25 am
arrested. he was arrested after he was detained by members of the public. the prime minister theresa may says this is being treated as a potential terrorist attack and she will chairan potential terrorist attack and she will chair an emergency meeting later this morning. she says all my thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the emergency services on the scene. through the night, we heard from the muslim council of britain and stay referred to this as they van driver intentionally ploughing into worshippers. they said that this is a violent manifestation of islamophobia as they have called on authorities to increase security outside mosques. you can now see from the live pictures a major police operation under way. if you are justjoining us, you under way. if you are justjoining us, you are under way. if you are justjoining us, you are with bbc news as we keep you across a major incident that occurred overnight on normal programming will resume later. this is to show you where it has been
5:26 am
taking place, in finsbury park in north london. of course, we will be finding out what is happening with regards to transport services there. it isn't far from finsbury park station, as you saw, a major underground station in north london. you can see a heavy police presence there, no surprise at all given the recent events that we have experienced in london last week alone, grenfell tower, the tragic event which was not at all related in terms of terrorism but then of course prior to that, we have had the incident on london bridge and westminster bridge as well. so we arejust keeping you westminster bridge as well. so we are just keeping you across these developments in north london that are emerging now, it occurred shortly after midnight, normal programming will resume later on bbc news. ayr, people through the night talking about this being an attack on the muslim community and this is now being treated as a potential
5:27 am
terrorist attack that from the prime minister theresa may. our reporter jane—frances kelly is at the scene and has been speaking to eyewitnesses. eyewitnesses have told me that at about 12:10am this evening a white van went down the seven sisters rd and they say it deliberately went into a group of people on the pavement. apparently they were helping an elderly gentleman that had collapsed beforehand. now, eyewitnesses again say they saw between four to eight people on the ground injured. we don't know how badly. and those people were wearing identifiably muslim clothing. many people had come out of the two mosques here, the finsbury park mosque and the abu hamza mosque. they were attending last prayers, many came out to have a break, to have a snack. as i say there was a lot
5:28 am
of anger because people feel they were deliberately targeted. we can see a really quite large crowd on our live pictures, jane, people gathered around. are they getting information from the police or is it too soon? we're not at the moment but we will try to. it is quite a confused place at the moment, as i say, and feelings are linked very high at the moment because the neighbourhood, those in the neighbourhood, field the individual that has been injured were deliberately targeted because they were muslim. we don't know that, that hasn't been confirmed, but that is the feeling here. jane, can you give us an idea of the age and the sexes of the group down there? of course this was just after midnight london time,
5:29 am
people were coming out from evening prayers. we're seeing a lot of men in our live pictures but where there are also women, children, families? there were definitely young women, not so much young children but young women definitely who were around and very anxious indeed. we can see there is quite a big police operation on our live pictures, the police lined up at one of the junctions. can you give us a sense of the scale in terms of the response? there are lots of i would say... i can't see beyond the actual police vans here but there are at least one, two, three, four vans i can see. it's blocking the view actually. there's a huge police presence here, they're taking this very seriously, they have cordoned off streets. it is being treated very seriously. people are in a state of tension at the moment
5:30 am
because of the terrorist attacks we've had in the past few weeks, and also the tragedy with grenfell tower. i think there's a sense of unease and anxiety because itjust seems to be one event after the other. it does, yes, jane. i wonderfrom your vantage point, can you see the ambulances who were sent there to treat the injured. how far away are they from you? i can't at the moment but i did see various police cars coming in and out, but i think the ambulances... by the time we arrived at the ambulances had already gone. have you heard anything about walking injured ? i haven't. it's quite a confused state but apparently there were walking wounded.
