of "dependent contractor", with workers able to get benefits such as holiday and sick pay. now on bbc news, it's time for wimbledon sportsday. hello and welcome to wimbledon sportsday. i'm hugh woozencroft. so much to come this evening, including this. canjohanna konta make it through into the semi—finals of wimbledon? 7 these are live pictures. she is into a deciding set with simona halep. venus williams will be waiting if she does — the five—time champion shows her class to defeat jelena 0stapenko. pitfalls and potholes — novak djokovic manages to avoid both on his way to the quarter—finals.
6:32 pm
the courts, honestly, are not that great this year. many players feel the same. it is what it is. and a fourth stage win at the tour de france for germany's marcel kittel — chris froome retains the yellow jersey. good evening. and it's been a far cooler and much wetter day eight here in south west london. there were plenty of umbrellas on the hill here today. the covers have been going on and off again and again due to the intermittent rain. that hasn't been a problem on centre court though. the roof has been up all day. the former britain davis cup captain john lloyd is with me. we have got umbrellas up today. the weather has
6:33 pm
not been great butjohanna konta is on centre court. she lost the first set on a tie—break. they are in a decider. how has she improved in this tournament so far? it is a difficult match but she is holding her own. she has had a tough matches. but what i like about her is the way she is embracing wimbledon. when she came through against donna vekic, which may be the best match of the championships, she has embraced the crowd, embraced being at wimbledon, embraced the pressure of being the number one in the tournament on the women's side. i think she is playing great. that first match was pretty tight. two tie—breaks first match was pretty tight. two tie—brea ks already. what first match was pretty tight. two tie—breaks already. what you make of how she has played? very well. it is a tough match. simona halep is the number two a tough match. simona halep is the numbertwo in a tough match. simona halep is the number two in the world. she is a tough competitor. it is nip and tuck. anything can happen. she seems to be playing well on the big points. i think she can still sneak
6:34 pm
through. it is great tennis once again. we're watching live pictures. level at two games each in the deciding set. where do you think konta has to go to get over the line in this match? now it is all about the business end of the match. it is all about pressure situations. they are both playing well. it is to take the chances. who has the guts to go for a winner and make it. and if they get a chance, to have that concentration, that confidence to serve it out. it comes down to big match nerves. if she does win it, how big will it be? huge. what a great location. if she can get through this one, absolutely, no reason why she can't win the whole thing. all of the women's quarterfinalists were in action today. back—to—back days on court for them. at 37, venus williams beat
6:35 pm
french open champion jelena 0stapenko. what have you made of her? she is amazing. the williams sisters, they are the greatest story in sports history, the way they have achieved what they have. amazing success. achieved what they have. amazing success. venus looks at home here. she can win this tournament now. no doubt about it. i can't believe how well she is playing at her age. she is playing like she is 21. she faces either konta or hallat next. you think either will worry her? they are tough players. i think she relishes the occasion. she has done it many times. she is the experienced player in the tournament on the women's side. she will fancy your chances whoever comes through. she wants to show her younger sister that she is still around. she thinks serena williams is whether, she said today. johanna konta has just serena williams is whether, she said today. johanna konta hasjust broken
6:36 pm
in the final set. she is 3—2 ahead. it could be a decisive moment in the match. she will have to close it out but a very important moment in the match forjohanna konta. we will talk about the other results today. garbine muguruza, a beaten finalist in 2016, she beat svetlana kuznetsova in straight sets. she could go all the way? she has won grand slam. she knows what it takes. she is playing excellently. she has sneaked through the draw. not many people were talking about her as being a potential winner but now she is in the last four. she has won grand slam and she fancies chances. why not? it is so wide open, to pick a favourite now is most impossible. she would have been happy to be first up on court number one today. the weather has soared a white things out. the other match was
6:37 pm
interrupted a couple of times. it was stopped at 2—2 in the second. do you think an unlikely winner could come from that? could. coco is playing very well. she is with pat cash now. if she can get through, she has got an interesting game. she plays aggressive serve volleys. that match is not over yet by any means. that match will move to centre court. let's talk about the men. rafa nadal‘s epic five—set defeat by gilles muller last night, meant a late night for fans on number one coui’t. it also meant an early start today for noval djokovic, as his fourth round match with frenchman adrian mannarino was held over and put first on centre court today. djokovic duly advanced to the quarter—finals, but not without one or two concerns, as leah boleto reports. important to get a good warm up. rafa nadal‘s marathon match had kept
6:38 pm
in waiting for hours last night. it went on so long, they were told to come back today. djokovic‘s matches have tended to be a bit quicker. he already had one cut short because of an injured opponent. mannarino appeared under the weather. team djokovic would be happy enough with their man's performance. with mannarino tending to overelaborate. the first set came simply enough, 6-2. the the first set came simply enough, 6—2. the second set in similar fashion. mannarino not exactly happy with how he was playing. djokovic grew concerned with the state of the court. the pitch was getting worse. with a break of serve already in hand, the number two seed appeared to be cruising. but possibly a little distracted. you need a trowel and a rake. mannarino has been inside the top 100 from most of the last seven years. he has never
6:39 pm
cracked the top 20. but if you give him an opening, he will take it. beautifully executed. djokovic keen to make it as short as possible, he took the second set on a tie—break. superiority was soon established in the third set. and there wasn't going to be a fourth. mannarino had impressed but not really threatened. the only worry for djokovic is his physical condition. and the short recovery time before he is back in action again. the number two seed did what he did —— had to do against mannarino, through in two hours and 19 minutes. the quarterfinal will come around very quickly. so an injury scare for the three—times champion, not helped by his concerns over the condition of centre court. djokovic complained of a hole near the baseline, and made his feelings known to the umpire. he's not the first player to complain about the state of the courts at this year's championships. the courts, honestly, are not that great this year.
6:40 pm
many players feel the same. it is what it is. the weather affects the grass. i'm sure the groundsmen know theirjob the best in the world. but the grass is probably the most complex service to make, to maintain. it is not easy. they are trying their best. but i have played on better courts. well, a few minutes after talking to the bbc, djokovic spoke at his post—match press conference, where he shared his unhappiness at being told he couldn't play last night, with the nadal versus muller match going long into the night. this is what he had to say about it. i wanted to play. i thought we could have played. we were kept for two and a half hours in the dark, in a way, without knowing what we were going to do. so you are on your toes, warming, cooling down. the
6:41 pm
referee's office was indecisive. just finally, when the match was over, we thought we had a couple of hours, we can go to centre court, and they said, no. it will take too long to get the crowd in. it was frustrating last night, i must admit. i quickly just frustrating last night, i must admit. i quicklyjust turned the next page and focused on what i needed to do today. i have done in straight sets and that is all that matters. what was your opinion? it would have been nice. i think they were worried about crowd control. the bottom line is they need to start on manic monday. faced —— they need to start an hour earlier. sometimes you get a lobby with the scheduling. it is rough for novak to be the only match. it is a little bit unfair, really. what have you made of the
6:42 pm
state of the courts? we have heard plenty of —— complains. state of the courts? we have heard plenty of -- complains. they have not been in good condition. i think a lot of players have been complaining. the way i look at it is this, a lot of time you get people who have lost in matches who complain. that is one thing. but a lot of the winners are complaining. there is something about it. if you look at the courts carefully, you can see these areas, centre court more. it is not looking good. there are still a lot of days left. i don't know how they can fix it. i think there will be more complaints. they got some moisture today. we will take a quick look atjohanna konta's match against johanna will take a quick look atjohanna konta's match againstjohanna konta. she is trying to make it through to the semifinals, the first british woman to do so since 1978. she is a break ahead. closing in, possibly, on victory. how big would that be for british tennis? it would be
6:43 pm
fantastic. we're used to seeing andy murray at this stage of the tournament. to havejohanna konta as well, what a great boost it would be for women's tennis. now we are coming to crunch time. we had to see if she can hold her nerve. i think she will. john, thank you for joining i think she will. john, thank you forjoining us. my pleasure. so djokovic will need plenty of rest before his quarterfinal. so too luxembourg's gilles muller, who took four hours and 48 minutes to beat rafa nadal last night. but muller will be hoping to avoid the fate which met the last four players to beat nadal at wimbledon. czech lukas rosol beat the spaniard on centre court in 2012, and promptly lost in straight sets two days later. steve darcis of belgium beat nadal in 2013 as did nick kyrgios in 2014 — both men beaten in their next match. and the same happened to dustin brown, the german who knocked nadal out two years ago. muller tries to break that curse against marin cilic tomorrow, after last night's epic win over nadal. it felt like at the end of the match
6:44 pm
i was close to winning than him, because i had match points. ifelt i didn't do anything wrong and those match point. i just didn't do anything wrong and those match point. ijust felt i had to be patient and keep playing that way. and if i work i would have some more chances and that is how it went. you seemed to have a tremendous amount of mental strength. how important is that as you head into the second week? i guess the mental part is huge. it is probably the biggest thing in tennis. you have very many quys thing in tennis. you have very many guys who are very talented and never make it, because it is not easy. you spend the lot of time with yourself on the court, it is easy to get negative and destroy yourself. you have to try and hang in there. it's very tough. myself, i had a lot of problems with that in the past. the
6:45 pm
older you get, the more comfortable you get and more secure you feel with and it is coming together. coming from a match like that is a perfect example of you being able to ta ke perfect example of you being able to take that mental strength and put it in the right direction, there is probably no better example than that? i guess. it is a good example. it was kind of easy because it is on a big stage and you are playing one of the biggest champions ever. you have nothing to lose. sometimes i still struggle with matches were maybe i'm the favourite and things are not going my way, and i become negative. it is not easy. yesterday was a good example but it was also easy yesterday, to be honest. who will be favoured in your next one? 0n will be favoured in your next one? on paper it is clear that marin cilic is favoured. i played at queen's a couple of weeks ago. he beat me in three tough sets. i think if i'm able to produce the same tennis i did yesterday, i will have my chances. i also know he is
6:46 pm
feeling very comfortable on the grass. he has had great results this year already. i am sure he will be feeling confident. we promise to keep you updated on johanna konta's progress. she has got three points to go 5—3 ahead. that is on her own serve. it is in the deciding set against simona halep. we will stay with it forjust a moment to see if she can make it 5-3. it a moment to see if she can make it 5—3. it would be a fantastic result. simona halep as a great record. she would be the first woman since 1978. virginia wade. it is now 5—3 to konta. she is one game away from reaching the last four at wimbledon. it would be an amazing result. we will keep you updated. there's no doubt who the pair to beat is in the mixed doubles — jamie murray and martina hingis have both won doubles titles here, and probably not surprisingly, were seeded number one once they decided to join forces. the pair booked their place in the quarter—finals this afternoon, with a straight sets win over
6:47 pm
romanjebavy and lucie hradecka after a rain stoppage. and hingis and her new partner have been speaking to our reporter, patrick gearey. i haven't —— i had a great partnership with leander paes in the past. nobody was pushing me when that stopped. the first option was obviously jamie for me. that stopped. the first option was obviouslyjamie for me. i was happy. that is what she is saying anyway! we will never know. that is not true. you are my only take. when you do change partners, do you have to get used to each other‘s foibles ready a brush that to one side? 0bviously with leander i won four slams. i was very spoiled with going very far slams. i was very spoiled with going veryfar in slams. i was very spoiled with going very far in the tournament. i was,
6:48 pm
yeah, just thinking, jamie being a lefty , yeah, just thinking, jamie being a lefty, girls don't like that too much. i think we both have greater understanding for the game already. there is not much to add to that. you have played a lot of men's doubles recently. is it unusual going back to the next? you have had success in the past. i did well in a mixed for a few years with lisa hueber. the last couple of years i haven't played that much. i have been concentrating more on the doubles at the slams. —— men's at the slams. i'd think i play good mixed. i enjoy it. it is fun. it is not as intense perhaps as the men's doubles. it is fun to play with martina. she is a great player. i go out there, enjoy it and what happens, happens. 20 years ago when you won here. i don't want to make
6:49 pm
you won here. i don't want to make you feel older anything! you have won everything. what keeps you bring —— what is it that keeps bringing you back? the joy for the game. even in the rain and everything. people stayed and supported us. to play still at this highest level and play for the championship, that is the motivation that keeps me going. would you like to go back into coaching? at some point, probably. i will always stay connected with tennis, yeah. do you look at players and think, i can make her better? 0therwise and think, i can make her better? otherwise i would be out there and doing it. no! let's go back to centre court. johanna konta serving now for a place in the semifinals in the women's singles at wimbledon. it would be a fantastic performance.
6:50 pm
she had only won one match previously at wimbledon before this year. she is going very, very strong indeed. she has lost the first point in that game but she has a very good serve. still confident of making it through. it would be a fantastic result for her against the second seed, simona halep. as we can see, johanna konta making it 15—15. a big chair behind me as well. —— cheer. we are going to stay with the pictures for the moment to caf konta's serve can respond, to see if she can make it through. it would be a fantastic result. it is the first year, of course, she has ever reached the second week at wimbledon. she had a very good build—up campaign. she is seeded number six. she reached the final at nottingham before an injury at eastbourne meant her campaign was derailed at the semifinal stage. she has done thing very well on grass
6:51 pm
this year. she probably prefers the ha rd this year. she probably prefers the hard courts. another big chair behind me. she makes it 30—15. we will drop into the commentary. have a listen. shejust she just uses that whole court so well. moving from side to side, until she has a little bit more of an opening, and then really accelerating into the open court. she read it. the adrenaline must be
6:52 pm
pretty high at the moment. my my guide! she stopped playing. that is too bad. i don't know why she stopped. it is over. british tennis history is made. it has been 39 yea rs. history is made. it has been 39 years. since a british woman can say, iam years. since a british woman can say, i am a wimbledon semifinalist. she has done it in front of the last woman to do it. thejunior weight. —— virginia wade. there you have it. she is through. a great result for the british fans. virginia wade was the last person to
