7:33 pm
again it has provided us with the gripping drama and supreme showers that you might have expected. the roof was up on centre court allowing spain's garbine muguruza to win her first title here at the expense of the five—time champion venus williams. 0n finals weekend, centre court brings the generations together, garbine muguruza, one of the newest stars against its greatest survivor. at 37, the stage was set for venus williams aiming to be the oldest post—war champion. beneath the roof you can hear the secrets of her longevity, power. she wants to close out points quickly, but amid the aggression come moments of genius. what a shot from venus williams! those flashes took williams to the brink of the first set. she had two points for the advantage, but back came muguruza. with bravery and brilliance, it swung the spaniards way. how did she get that ball?
7:34 pm
that would be the shot of the set. her battling saw off break points and suddenly she had the lead. how this sport can swing. that exchange would have its effect on williams. even with her experience, she gets unsettled. muguruza has grown into this tournament, now she had grown into the match. three breaks in the second set had her racing towards the title. two years ago she was denied by serena. she would not miss this chance. tears of despair a couple of years ago but overwhelming joy now. she is the champion. venus williams says she will be back again to win more. it was the game's new star who'd light up centre. a first wimbledon title. the start of her own legacy. i had i think the hardest match today against venus. she is such an incredible player.
7:35 pm
i grew up watching her play so it is incredible to play the final... laughter sorry! sue barker: but she was an inspiration? definitely. i feel incredible to play her here. and you showed no sign of nerves. i think it is inside. of course i am nervous. i always dreamed to be here. i was composed, i guess. that first set was crucial, wasn't it? yes, it was very, very tough. we both had a lot of chances so i am glad i made it. what about your team 7 your coach cannot be here. do you have a message for him? yes, well, here it is! congratulations, it is amazing. i know how hard you work. this means so much to you and your family.
7:36 pm
well done today. beautiful. but also, venus, well done to you because you have had a great tournament. yes, thank you. thank you to my team who have been here day in, day out. thank you to my family. i love you guys. and a message to serena? imiss you. i tried my best to do the same things you do, but i think there'll be other opportunities, i do. so it was not to be for venus williams but a redemption for garbine muguruza. 0ur reporter david 0rnstein caught up with a former champion mary pierce. it was quite something.
7:37 pm
that first set was a real battle. there was the epic long rally of 19 shots where garbine muguruza played so solid, so aggressive. i think that really turned things around for her, winning that game, going to 5—5 and winning the first set. and it seemed physically venus williams wasn't the same player inthe second set. the first set took a lot out of her physically. very quickly, garbine muguruza took that match. but so happy for her. i think she really deserves it. she has worked hard to get back to where she is now. it looks like we've got garbine muguruza won the french open last year and i was so happy to see that smile on her face afterwards. and having conchita martinez in her camp as well has also given her confidence that someone else has already done this and can give her tips.
7:38 pm
what does this victory mean to her, the second grand slam title, how big an achievement if this? i think it consolidates and concerns your position in tennis and to say, i am a champion, i am a grand slam champion now, i have done it twice. i'm here to stay and hopefully to win some more titles. garbine muguruza did not have a great year over the last 12 months. it has been hard for her to readjust to a new lifestyle. so many things have changed and she has had real difficulties. there is a time it takes to get used to that. she has gone through that time and now she is wimbledon champion now. having two grand slam titles will give her a lot more confidence for the rest of the year. venus williams will be so disappointed. there was so much history riding on this match. were you disappointed ? i was so proud of her. at 37 years old, and with an immune condition, to be playing so well is incredible. after everything she has been
7:39 pm
doing in her career, she obviously enjoys playing tennis. she is obviously sad that she lost but i think she can be proud of herself because she knows she has gone out there and she has given 100% of herself and really left everything out on the court. by by winning the title here, garbine muguruza is only the second spanish woman to win the title, the second since her stand—in coach conchita martinez back in 1994. arantxa sanchez vicario was so well known here but she was beaten twice in the finals. she was elated for her compatriot. this year it was more open than any other. serena was
7:40 pm
a lwa ys open than any other. serena was always the favourite to win everywhere. she took her chances and played well. that will give her confidence going to the next tournament is for sure, and being one of the favourites after serena not being here, to be able to continue her success. she has confidence and she will manage to do the day—to—day because this is what she is dreaming for and she will have a good celebration first and enjoy the moment and she will concentrate for the rest of the season concentrate for the rest of the season because she can continue having much more success. what about what it means for tennis back in spain. they were spoilt to have you and conchita martinez back in the day? i was very happy to be the pioneer to win and to be the first one andi pioneer to win and to be the first one and i think that motivation of having more players with can cheat there. now she won his starts winning again, the same as we had
7:41 pm
rafa for many years winning every grand slam. i think it is good tennis for spain, and we are very happy and privileged to have the same success happy and privileged to have the same success that we had many years ago and the continuation is there. philjones with arantxa sanchez vicario. we will have more on the other finals here later on, including news of alfie hewett and gordon reid. but quickly we will turn our attention to cricket. england have handed south africa control of the second test at trent bridge after a batting collapse on day two. adam wild has been watching. a serene scene at trent bridge. down below, joe root and england plotting to break that calm. if there is one player they can rely on to create noise, it is james anderson. he got the cheers started early. needing four dismissals to wrap up the south africa innings,
7:42 pm
anderson was in no mood to share them out. little over half an hour played, 335 all out. the applause well earned. now over to south africa, to plot their response. it was as swift as it was effective. alistair cook stopped before he was allowed to get started. the very next ball, keatonjennings, out. trent bridge suddenly silenced. then it was down tojoe root to get the crowd on their feet. he passed 50. a recovery of sorts but one that would not last. when he went for 78, england were right back in trouble. ben stokes could not offer a single run of help. now the only sound, that of wickets falling and south africa celebrating. england collapsing to 205 all out. still 130 behind. the day ending as it began, with south africa batting. 0nly trent bridge now
7:43 pm
a little less calm. south africa are firmly in control. england's women have set up a world cup semifinal clash with south africa after a convincing 92 run win over west indies today. they continued their good form with the bat, posting 220—7 from their 50 overs. captain heather knight hitting 67. in reply, west indies never came close, losing wickets regularly with natalie sciver picking up three of them forjust three runs, as england sealed a comfortable victory. australia will meet india in the other semifinal. so here are the final standings. confirmation that england finished top of the group stage. australia beat south africa today by 59 runs, finishing second to england on run—rate. india's huge 186 runs win over new zealand saw them finish third. lewis hamilton will start tomorrow's british grand prix on pole position as he attempts to make history at silverstone. patrick gearey watched the mercedes driver dominate today's qualifying. the future of the british grand prix
7:44 pm
might be unclear, but its presence, that is all about lewis hamilton. this weekend they have come to see lewis hamilton come to make history, to level alain prost and jim clark's record of five race wins in the british grand prix. hamilton equalled clark's record of five pole positions. it started in very british conditions. the drizzle but had disrupted final practice, reappeared for the first session of qualifying. daniel ricciardo suffered turbo failure and there hamilton came to the fore in q2 and q3. his final lap was quicker than kimi raikkonen. i needed to make sure i got that lap in. i did not do it in the last race so i made sure i saved it this weekend.
7:45 pm
thank you guys so much. a sensational piece of driving which will be remembered by all who saw it. motor racing offers no guarantees. when hamilton gets ahead, he does not often look back. it could prove a crucial day at the tour de france after chris froome reclaimed the leader's yellow jersey after stage 14 in the pyrenees. the team sky rider finished just a second behind stage—winner michael matthews, but managed to break away from the previous overall leader fabio aru. turning a six second deficit into a 19 second advantage. the england under 19s have won their championship final against georgia. you never know what is on the horizon but a fourth final appearance by an england youth side this summer, things are looking

bright. this chance, about as good as it got. things improved, certainly for england they did. asystole a nd certainly for england they did. asystole and acting quickest that the young lions ahead. ——. if you thought that miss was bad, this one was even worse. a volley into play av was even worse. a volley into play a's own net. england went again in front. manchester city striker lucas metra got the winner. the under 19s led by head coach keith downing, winners of the european championship, the third youth tournament win of the summer. new horizons for england. chelsea have completed the signing of french
