that story is in the business times. china will protect its borders at all costs, leads the south china morning post, the strongest warning yet from beijing to india over a month—long territory dispute in the himalayas. the row erupted after indian troops tried to stop chinese soldiers from building a road in an area claimed by both china and bhutan, india's long—time ally. the philippine star covers president rodrigo duterte‘s second state of the nation address. he warned his controversial war on drugs will be unrelenting, and defended imposing martial law to tackle an islamist insurgency on the island of mindanao. dominating most of the papers in the uk this morning, including the independent, is the heartbreaking decision by the parents of the terminally ill baby charlie gard to end their legal battle to keep him alive. and the daily telegraph warns consumers who buy internet—enabled devices such as televisions and refrigerators are potentially leaving themselves open to hackers. so let's begin.
5:46 am
with me is iain anderson, founder of the international communications agency cicero group. thank you forjoining us. fascinating the way that it has been reported, of jared kushner‘s explanations on russia, and his explanations on russia, and his explanations for those meetings. no denial that some of these meetings took place, but certainly denial that it was collusion. and lots, chris, he said, she said, stuff going on. a very very carefully scripted statement from jared kushner in the white house. the evidence session was in private yesterday, interestingly, but you still have the russian banker saying, well, i did talk about business interests when we met. so you either believe the russians or
5:47 am
you either believe the russians or you believe jared kushner. ithink there is something interesting which seems to be unfolding here as well, which is, overnight, trump has been on twitter again, talking about his attorney general is being beleaguered. real suggestions that other senior members of the white house, like steve bannon and others, might be about to be pushed by trump. he is perhaps about to create lots and lots of disruption in his administration, so we look over here and not at this story. jared kushner is an interesting member of the trump family. is an interesting member of the trumpfamily. in is an interesting member of the trump family. in comparison to his father—in—law, to his wife, he keeps quite a low media profile. not at the moment! at in terms of his twitter. i think this is the first time we have heard his voice in public, as far as i can remember. we didn't hear him much at all. he is in front of the house committee today, and of course donaldjr
5:48 am
in front of the house committee today, and of course donald jr is going to be in front of congress this week. this is a story that will not go away. it is a smoking gun, and it continues to smoke. we have to remind ourselves president trump is just to remind ourselves president trump isjust six months in. whatever has happened, it has been a rollercoaster six months. well, he promised us it was going to be different, and it certainly has been. he is delivering. the business times. the world economy is the strongest upswing in a decade, according to the imf. it was reduced outlook for the uk the us. yes, and what the story is really telling us is something we have known for a very long time, which is established western economies are finding growth really difficult to do now. and emerging economies, india, a lot of the south—eastern asian states, are
5:49 am
doing incredibly well. that is what is propping the global economy up, before you even talk about the brexit word, sorry i mentioned it, in terms of what is happening in the uk. soa in terms of what is happening in the uk. so a very mixed picture. of course, a lot of people will say, imf, how often do you get your numbers right? so there is a lot of scepticism around the imf numbers but the general trend is clear. interestingly, the chinese numbers have continued to slow down as well, so have continued to slow down as well, so everybody from global economy point of view needs to keep their eye on that. there was a very interesting comment from justine lagarde, the managing director, and there is a bylaw that the head office must be in the country which is the largest economy of the members. —— christine lagarde. and there was a suggestion they might have to move to beijing. well i have heard her talk about not only the dollar but also the renmimbi
5:50 am
renminbi as a reserve currency. here is one of those stories reported particularly in asia, china threatening india over bhutan‘s border disputes. one of those stories which first emerges and you think it will sort itself out and suddenly china is actually warning india it will defend its territory no matter what, at all cost. so this started with china starting to build a road in a strategically important pa rt a road in a strategically important part of the world. web bhutan, china and india all clashed together. it has been viewed by those in bhutan as an aggressive act and india is kind of weekly coming up to bhutan‘s defence. but it is a strategically
5:51 am
important move by the chinese, and another example of the people's liberation army and the chinese government getting very, very assertive in terms of its foreign policy and military posture. whether oi’ policy and military posture. whether or not this turns into something more significant, we will wait to see. what it is another example of china playing the hired man rather than the diplomat. and it is interesting, if you look at the figures, india has a lot more to lose here, potentially —— hard man. it absolutely does, which is why the diplomatic language is starting to kick in. what it as a potential flashpoint, without doubt. we have been hearing a lot from rodrigo duterte in the last 2a hours, and pretty much everything, from terrorism to his war on drugs as well. this is a man who doesn't hold back. here's the asian strongman. we are talking about the us strongman earlier, he is the asian strongman
5:52 am
right now. he went and addressed his congress yesterday explaining why he is extending a state of emergency, and then he went out right in front of the protesters who really don't like him, and told them to shut up. he loves language that really, really cuts through. he is co nsta ntly really cuts through. he is constantly on the front pages. he does things in a very, very different way. you could argue what he is trying to do on drugs is actually the right thing to do, he poses as the hired man. and from a democratic point of view, ongoing martial law situation is not a good place to be. and you only have to speak of human rights groups, complaining of overcrowded prisons, no legal representation for those who have been arrested in huge numbers, and of course allegations continue that they are being sentenced to death very quickly as well. of course, he knows his language continues to make him very, very popular amongst his base. that rings a bell somewhere else as well, doesn't it? and a very heartbreaking
5:53 am
story in the independent. charlie gard's parents, time has run out. story in the independent. charlie gard's parents, time has run outlj watch the statement live yesterday here in london, and it was very difficult not to feel very, very emotional. these are two parents doing i think the thing that any sensible parents would do. they would fight for their child as long as they could possibly do. a sense from them that, if the legal process had moved faster, they might have had moved faster, they might have had more medical options for baby charlie, but it is a desperately, desperately sad, sad piece of news. and a picture in this particular case speaks 1000 words. finally, the daily telegraph. home gadgets open to hackers. question: why does
5:54 am
anybody have their refrigerator linked to wi—fi? i don't get it. anyone with gadgets linked to wi—fi, they are a danger... it is so when you are out you know if you need to order more milk. this is basically about laziness, isn't it? so the internet of laziness might be a better way to put this. and i am deeply worried. i had my electricity smart metre installed yesterday at home, so now, according to this story, there is some pretty dangerous stuff which can happen to my electricity supply. i am not quite sure if this is news. i think we kind of knew this was going on anyway. thank you forjoining us for the papers. we will be back with the latest headlines shortly. hello there. many of us have had more than ourfair share of wet and cloudy weather of late, but that certainly hasn't been the whole story. monday brought some
5:55 am
sunshine for many places. that was the scene across the scottish highlands. the sunshine was not shared out equally, though. suffolk seeing a lot of cloud. many eastern areas had rather cloudy conditions. out west, in the atlantic, there is another lump of cloud hurtling its way in. that will bring some rain on the wednesday, but for tuesday we are between weather systems and that means actually a fair amount of fine and dry weather in the day ahead. where it has been so cloudy across eastern england, eastern scotland, that cloud will break up a little bit. there will be more in the way of sunshine. could just see the odd shower breaking out across the south—west and south wales later in the day, but in the sunshine, this is problable where we'll have the highest temperatures — 2a, maybe 25 degrees. certainly a little bit less cool than it was on monday, across the south—east and east anglia, because there will be more sunshine. and through north wales, northern england, it should be fine, some sunny spells. clouding over a little bit in northern ireland later in the day, maybe a shower for scotland. most places dry, if a little on the chilly side, close to the east coast, 1a degrees in aberdeen.
5:56 am
most places will have a fine evening, but things then begin to change. into the early hours of wednesday, we'll see quite a band of rain working in across northern ireland, south—west scotland, wales and the south—west, courtesy of an area of low pressure. quite a deep low, actually — this is not a usual weather chart for this point in july. closely squeezed isobars, that means some fairly strong winds and weather fronts, bringing a band of rain eastwards across the country. now, especially across the northern half of the british isles, this rain will be quite heavy. it will go on for quite a few hours, as well. not as much rain getting across into the south—east. and then for the south—west, wales, northern ireland later in the day, things will brighten up with some spells of sunshine. those blustery winds making it feel cool. 18—21 degrees. and, although the weather front responsible for the main body of the rain will clear away to the east, this area of low pressure is still close by on thursday, and that means very strong winds, especially up to the north—west. there'll be some heavy showers here, as well. drier, brighter weather towards the south—east. just 15 degrees in glasgow, maybe 22 in london. and we stick with that blustery
5:57 am
theme as we head to the end of the week. some spells of sunshine on friday, some showers as well. highs of 17—22 degrees. so, as we head towards the end of the week, a cooler, fresher feel. yes, there'll be some spells of sunshine, but some heavy, blustery showers as well. hello, this is breakfast with louise minchin and dan walker. charlie gard's parents say they will spend their last precious moments with their son after ending their legal fight. they've released this new picture of charlie. great ormond street hospital has praised the bravery of their decision. good morning, it's tuesday 25th july. also this morning, a clampdown on leasehold charges, ben can tell us more.
5:58 am
there's been a sharp rise in new houses being sold leasehold rather than freehold, and it could cost homeowners thousands of pounds in hidden costs. the government says it must end. i'll have the details.
