spedta'ftors championships here. and spectators as well, you wonder who you are watching, who is genuinely... that is right. as you both know i know nothing about sport, but however it seems to me we are coming to the point where everybody should be tested, and it seems you need a screening system to stop people doping before they start competing. back to the sunday times, let them eat pheasants says beefy botham. you know who this man is even though you can't stand sport. don't you two gang up! famous cricketer. well done, you see? famous for what? cricket! we'll let that one path. he has the new idea to help food banks out. this might upset hunters, but to put pheasants, because he shoots a lot of them, in food banks so they

can use them, and they would be in pies or minces. the country food trust. it seems to be not a bad idea. if you have a surfeit of food somewhere, food banks are desperate for it, why not send in there? and it is good quality food, anyone who lives in the country, there is a lot of food for free. i speak as a woman who waded through plums this morning after strong gales in kent! it is good quality stuff, no one says they have to pluck them. we are not going down that road, plucking pheasants, thank you! that was risky, wasn't it? that's it for the papers this hour. thank you, nigel nelson and jo phillips, — you'll both be back at 11:30 for another look at the stories making the news tomorrow. coming up next, it's the film review. welcome to the film review on bbc

news. to take us through this week ‘s releases i am joined byjames king while mark takes a break. great to see you, what have you been watching? if feels like it has been ages since there has been a new fresh romantic comedy. there is one out this weekend called the big sick. i will tell you about that. from australia, hounds of love, a brutal true story, a kidnap drama. and a big hit in the states this one, starring queen latifah, a comedy called girls trip. probably
10:48 pm
no one has missed the publicity for the big sick, lots of interviews everywhere with the actor and writer, interesting take, does it work? there is a lot to say about it. we can see on the poster that the lead actor is also the writer and it is written with his partner emily gordon about their life, how they got together, their real—life romance. the difference between them is that kamara is originally from pakistan and moved to chicago, traditional pakistani muslim family whereas emily is white american from this eccentric family, so that is the chalk and cheese dynamic every good romantic comedy needs, but then people are saying, why is it called the big sick? and illness happens to the characters as well, so there is a lot happening in this story. the clip is from the beginning of the story, kumail, trying to make it as a comedian, meeting emily for the

first time. hello. my name is kumail. we met. now the niceties narrative the way i have to tell you when you yelled at me and threw me off and you shouldn't heckle comedians, it is so rude. off and you shouldn't heckle comedians, it is so rudelj off and you shouldn't heckle comedians, it is so rude. i didn't heckle you, ijust said woo hoo, i was supportive. that is a common misconception. yelling anything it's heckling, it doesn't have to be negative. so offi heckling, it doesn't have to be negative. so off i yelled out, you're amazing in bed, that would be a heckle? ds, and accurate heckle. wow! laughter. jus get my friend off. laughter already it is endearing. yes. i think kumail and emily, the writers are inspired by the greats, richard curtis, annie

hall, tutsi, and if you are inspired by those movies that is a good start. tutsi, one of my all-time favourite films. a lot of people have said, is this statement about the politics of america and race relations? it is not, it is a personal story, not political, just a true story of how two people together. is there anything in terms of talking about interracial couples, which doesn't get talked about a lot on film? that is the refreshing thing about this film. it is in there but not making a larger statement, it is just about what happened to them. it is very charming. and he is in it, he wrote it, he stars in it, but not too self—serving, more affectionate than that? yes. and there is a lovely relationship between kumail and emily's parents, holly hunter and ray romano. i know ray romano from
10:51 pm
sitcoms and voices in ice age and didn't expect him to be as good as he is. in this he shows that he is a good actor. i think he could be up for awards for this performance. and holly hunter is going for it. she is nuts in this, brilliantly so. fantastic, and how lovely to go into the summer after a hard year with something genuinely fun. we haven't had a romantic comedy, and new, fresh one for a while. people seem to think we know the tropes about romantic comedy and how they work and the cliches, and this has the framework but is doing new things. our next film from australia, again, having read lots about it i know i couldn't stomach it, talk us through it, explain why some people like me might be queasy. again loosely based ona might be queasy. again loosely based on a true story about the morehouse murders in perth in western australia in the mid—80s, where a

suburban couple were kidnapping teenage girls, but i suppose what is really great thing about this film is that it is not some exploitative horror movie. it is a character study of this couple who do this, and why they do it, and what is going on in their heads, specifically the wife, emma booth, evenin specifically the wife, emma booth, even in the movie, who she is, what is in her past, why she is in the situation and why she does what she does. that stops it being about cardboard cutouts and a gory movie, thatis cardboard cutouts and a gory movie, that is why it is interesting, it is about these characters, the three—dimensional characters, the girls they kidnap, the kidnappers, they all have real depth, and it is well made. it is ben young's first film, captures suburban australian life very well, disillusionment,

quite a kitchen—sink drama really, so quite a kitchen—sink drama really, so yes of course it is brutal and tough to watch but very well made. so yes of course it is brutal and tough to watch but very well madelj hear you and he might be a talent to watch, still not sure i have the stomach for it. but girls trip perhaps takes us back. kumail kumail definitely lighted territory. we have queen latifah in this, gaidar pinkett smith, tiffney habits, regina hall, four girls go to new 0 rlea ns regina hall, four girls go to new orleans for the weekend, girls trip cale since hughes, have a quick look. it's to reflect. all that pent—up energy is going to waste! what was that, sasha? what was that you were saying about pent—up energy. never doubt. never doubt a

boss. our slave, i slay all day, all day, all day, all day, i slay! have a good evening, ladies. q2. yes! laughter is it fun, is it silly? all those things, it is definitely silly and funny, has relentless joy about it, bubbly nurse and bawdiness, difficult to find a clip we could play, put it like that. what is most interesting about it and what people are picking up on is that its characters are four contemporary successful confident black women, and you don't have enough of those movies. not nearly enough. it is not an oscar movie or movies. not nearly enough. it is not an oscar movie 0!’ an movies. not nearly enough. it is not an oscar movie or an issues movie, it is joyfully frothy and silly and thatis it is joyfully frothy and silly and that is refreshing. ok, it is predictable, clunky at times, but this whole effervescence about it

carries it along, and we will see more movies like this because this has been a big hit in the states so it will change things. it is interesting because i was thinking how much i enjoyed hidden figures and it is bad but i enjoy that because it was the last time i watched a film that focused on african—american women, and you think, goodness, the fact that it even resonates shows what a paucity there is with that cinema. hidden figures is great but an oscar movie. this is joyfully not like that, deliberately frothy and flimsy with eve ryo ne deliberately frothy and flimsy with everyone having fun which is the novelty. there to give you a good time. as is, for younger viewers, captain underpants normally. time. as is, for younger viewers, captain underpants normallylj time. as is, for younger viewers, captain underpants normally. i was going to choose dunkirk! not a

christopher nolan movie it is fair to say, dreamworks animation, best mates hypnotise their school principal into believing he is a superhero called captain underpants, and just silly, zany and nonstop. it is knowing, it has that wink and reflexive quality that adults like. if you just want jokes about pants, thereof plenty. whoopee humour! the main antagonist is called professor pukki pants, come on! that's all you need to know. what dvd have you picked? life, a science-fiction film about scientists bringing back a martian life form to planet earth which starts out as a single cell organisms and grows into something more intimidating. when you watch this you think alien, ridley scott, similarities to that, not as good but many similarities. mainly set in
