start at 2pm and finished after dark. test cricket is chasing the evening at chasing the audience. scheduled the match when the crowds can come to watch it. he is for entertainment as well as for edgbaston. floodlights and pimples arejust edgbaston. floodlights and pimples are just two of the variables here. there are traditional issues like selection. england gave a debut to mark stoneman and the captainjoe root could really do with someone rocksolid to rely on. it is an opportunity for the guys now in the series in particular to stamp their mark on the team and test cricket andi mark on the team and test cricket and ijust mark on the team and test cricket and i just think that is mark on the team and test cricket and ijust think that is an exciting place to be for us as a team, if the left ca n ta ke place to be for us as a team, if the left can take their chances now, than they should stand us in really good stead. the challenges for england's captain tend to be dwarfed by the challenges facing his counterpart at the west indies. jason holder is a tall guy and growing in wisdom, but only 25 and

he must lead a team of players trying to prove themselves, let's say that. but who looks after the west indies captain? my teammates support me. it is something i really enjoy. there have obviously been tough day. that is life. everything is not going to be handed on a platter or easy. it is about accepting the challenge, and not only me, the group. they have supported me and i appreciate it. once we keep this core players together we will be special in the yea rs together we will be special in the years to come. one place where the test match will be scrutinised in particular is the duke sport headquarters in london, the manufacturer that england savour —— duke's ball. they will make a pinball to be used underfloodlights and test matches, which willjust be normal. in realistic terms about 18 months of research and batches being made and then another batch and so on before you get the right colour. the ball is fundamentally the same as all of the balls we make. it is

fundamentally the colour and the surface finish and we are aiming to make the ball as near as possible to all the other bulls we make, so there is no huge difference. warwickshire are putting the match, saying it has had a positive effect on the sale. england will play in adelaide in the ashes under lights, so adelaide in the ashes under lights, so is it just adelaide in the ashes under lights, so is itjust a one—off or is day night test match cricket the future? i don't know, is the honest answer. let's be honest, the part of the reason we are doing this is because of the ashes in winter. ask me in five days' time... i might do, yeah. it will be historic, it will be the first or last, or it will be the first or last, or it will be the first in many. cricket has often been stifled or enriched by tradition, there has to be innovation, and for a few days here we will have to think pink. very much looking forward to that. japan's kei nishikori is out for the rest of the tennis season after tearing a tendon

in his right wrist. the world number nine joins i2—time grand slam champion novak djokovic and stan wawrinka in missing the us open, which starts on 28 august. there was a shock at the cincinnati masters as unseeded american teenager frances tiafoe — ranked 87 in the world — beat alexander zverev, the number four seed. zverev was aiming for back—to—back masters series titles after his victory over roger federer in the final in montreal last sunday and it also broke a ten match winning streak for the german. tiafoe had lost to zverev at both wimbledon and the australian open this year and this was a first win over a top ten ranked player and he now faces fellow american john isner in the round of 16. in the women's event at the same venue world number three angelique kerber was beaten by ekaterina makarova in three sets, as the russian won the final tie—break on her eighth match point. it's been a disappointing year for the german after she held the number one ranking for much of 2016. her opponent here was also the same one who knocked her out in the first round of the french open.

the 29—year—old makarova, who struggled at times with a leg injury in this match, will next face american wildcard sloane stephens. and the shocks keep on coming, as seven time grand slam champion venus williams was knocked out by australia's ashleigh barty. the 21—year—old, who had to qualify for the main draw, claimed the win in three sets and will now play sixth seed caroline wozniacki in the round of 16. now to golf, and the solheim cup gets under way on friday at des moines golf and country club in iowa. the usa are the defending champions in the bi—ennial event which has seen europe have to make a late change as norway's suzzane petterson norway withdrew through injury. scotland's catriona matthew, a three time winner at this event will now play, having been set to be one of the vice captains. i think we're lucky to have such a great alternate and, yeah, suzzane will be there to support us, she will be there to support us, she

will be the vice captain, and it is so good to have someone out there, feel her presence, and catrina is such a super solid player, and i think exactly the right player to come in kind of last—minute and play for the team, so, yeah, come in kind of last—minute and play forthe team, so, yeah, it is come in kind of last—minute and play for the team, so, yeah, it is what it is, injuries happen, and i think, you know, suzzane — it was a brave move to admit she is not ioo%, and she put the team first and that is what it is all about this week. i caught my way up here, i made my way onto the team, and for me this year is so much more special because it is already victory to be hit to be part of this experience — i feel so be part of this experience — i feel so extremely honoured and grateful, you know, to be in iowa, actually i have family here in iowa, he will see me for the first time play, so it is going to be really special. on the pga tour the wymondham championship tees off in north carolina on thursday. it's the last tournament before the fed ex cup play offs and henrik stenson is the only player inside the world's top ten taking part.

the former open champion and a former fed ex cup winner starts as favourite at grensboro but admits his form isn't great. yeah, so, it has been ok, it hasn't been great, though it hasn't been poorly either, so we are lingering somewhere in between, not in full form, still good enough to produce decent scores and, given i haven't had any success in a while, i still had any success in a while, i still had any success in a while, i still had a quite good effort last week, so we are kind of carrying on with the same grass and the same weather, so we are kind of getting used to this cool summer temperatures by now. in major league baseball the milwaukee brewers hit five home runs on wednesday to come back and beat the pittsburgh pirates 7—6. manny pina hit a two—run home run at the bottom of the eighth inning after the pirates had earlier in the game led 4—0. brewers closer corey knebel entered the game and recorded his 24th save of the season. fair comeback, that.

finally, triplejump world champion christian taylor was back in action on wednesday in the picturesque and high altitude settings of tignes in france. at 3032 metres above sea level, there was hope that jonathan edwards' 22—year—old world record may fall but taylor missed out less than a week after claiming gold in london. the winner was the man who took silver behind him, his american compatriot will claye, who claimed first place in breezy conditions with a leading jump of 17.42 metres. high—5s all round. it looked more like skiing rather than triple jump. you can get all the latest sports news at our website. that's bbc.com/sport. for everything else, goodbye.

let's see if the weather is going to be behaving itself on thursday. looking a little mixed. there's some rain out there right now, but thursday itself is looking not too bad across the uk. there will be some sunshine around and a few showers as well, so you mightjust about need your brolly. but early in the morning, still raining across many parts of england, particularly eastern areas — that's where there could be some heavy rain still, anywhere from newcastle, just about into the midlands, east anglia and the south—east, but mild in the morning. 16 in london. 15 for leeds, and around about 13—14 in scotland and northern ireland. the cloud and the rain — the overnight cloud and the rain — might drag its heels a little bit across the south—east but eventually it should be out of the way in the north sea, and then we've got that mixture of sunshine and showers. and the showers might happen across the south—west, through the midlands, wales, scotland and northern ireland too, but not too many of them
1:56 am
across northern england, we don't think. could be a beautiful day in cumbria and the north—east of england, for example. how about the cricket? just the chance of a shower, probably not too many of them around, so the risk of any disruption i don't think is particularly high. now, the forecast into friday — so, thursday night into friday — a low pressure is barrelling across the uk, and one thing that we will all notice on friday is the strength of the wind. it's going to be a very blustery day across the uk, all parts of the country. there will be some very blustery showers around, as well, across many northern and western areas of the uk. some of those showers will be heavy. so temperatures might be, say, 15—21 degrees, but it might feel cooler than that because of the strength of the wind. saturday, maybe not quite so windy but still pretty breezy. there will be some showers around but not as many. i think, overall, a slightly better day i think on saturday for most of us. now, i'm going to go back to what is happening right now, just off the eastern coast of the us, we have hurricane gert
1:57 am
here, and that is going to be influencing our weather to an extent come sunday. this is what's going to be happening, so gert is going to start dying away, fizzling out, over the next two or three days and then it gets mixed up with the weather systems that usually come our way anyway. and basically what'sgoing to happen is the leftovers of gert — so the clouds, some of the wind and rain — will be crossing our country during the course of sunday. so you could call it "ex—gert" if you like, but it's certainly not going to be a hurricane. that means rain in some parts of the country but some uncertainty exactly how much rain, how much wind. but it will be an unsettled sunday for sure. so here's the weekend summary — there will be some blustery showers and wind around for sure. welcome to bbc news, broadcasting to viewers in north america and around the globe. my name is mike embley. our top stories: more business leaders resign from president trump's advisory councils in response to his stance
