8:01 pm
are continuing the bbc‘s live coverage of the terror attack in spain, where a van has driven into crowds, killing at least 13 people. let's recap what we know. this happened in barcelona in the north—east of spain. in fact, if i ta ke north—east of spain. in fact, if i take you closer into the city, you can see that we have highlighted exactly where the attack occurred. las ramblas is the city's famous tourist hotspot area. a white van mounted the pavement and drove into pedestrians. 13 people have been killed and more than 50 others have been injured. according to police, the van entered the famous street from the north side. let's see if i can bring this up for you. it came in on the north side of las ramblas. and it went at some speed down the strip, coming to a halt about halfway down. to give you an idea of just how busy this area usually is,
8:02 pm
we have a photo from yesterday showing it is packed, it is extremely popular with tourists. police confirmed on twitter they have arrested one person. despite reports about this, they say there is no continuing hostage situation. police have also of a man, driss oukabir. we understand this is the man who rented the van involved in the incident. police posting this tweet to say what is obvious to us all now, this is being treated as a terror attack. jama anwar was in barcelona. he witnessed the attack and spoke to the bbc as the story unfolded. las ramblas is right in the heart of the city, it is jam—packed with thousands of tourists. i was about to sit down for something to eat. then i decided to walk down a bit further. literally seconds later, heard a crashing noise. the whole street, i started hearing screaming. everybody
8:03 pm
started hearing screaming. everybody started to run so i started to run in the direction people were running. families were screaming, their kids, they were taking them out of prams and started to run. within seconds, police officers were out. i noticed yesterday when i arrived in the city that, you know, there is a heavy police presence. guns were out, ambulances, fire engines. you could see at the top of the street, a sort of like vans. i spoke and try to get into a shop because people were panicking. there was a shopkeeper who was speaking and said something about a van. i try to ask him, and he said that a van had driven into the crowd, and six people were very seriously injured. at that point, the ambulances, fire brigade, police officers were on the scene with machine guns and guns, very quickly. they were very jittery and people we re they were very jittery and people were panicking. and then we were
8:04 pm
pushed back again and then pushed further back. the police are absolutely everywhere at the moment. joining me 110w now via skype is a reporterfrom bbc persian who is in barcelona. i can see table behind you, you are pretty near the scene. what is the situation right now? about 100m from pla ca situation right now? about 100m from placa de catalu nya, situation right now? about 100m from placa de catalunya, which is not really far away from where the attack happened. the crowds were being directed out of this area up until maybe ten minutes ago. itjust shows what a massive population was in that area. because as we know, it is one of the most visited parts of barcelona. but panic still continues to be the mood. because a few minutes ago, the crowd suddenly got scared of something, we don't know what. they started running. behind them were police officers with guns, just right behind me, following, chasing, as if there was somebody in that crowd that they wanted to
8:05 pm
arrest. and then everybody dissipated. and it wasn't clear where it. did. but itjust gives you a sense of how worried the population is, how word gets out that something is happening. and it might bejust that something is happening. and it might be just a that something is happening. and it might bejust a mistake. but it creates panic. there are choppers overhead in the last few others. as you said, right behind here is the centre of where it all happened. and there are images of police with big guns, long guns, going street to street, especially in the old part of barcelona, which is the other end of barcelona, which is the other end of la rambla, and chasing people, making sure that every house, every restau ra nt, making sure that every house, every restaurant, making sure that the person they are chasing is not there. and continuing the search. we 110w there. and continuing the search. we now have reports that one person has been arrested and also reports that one have been killed, it is unclear which is the case. nevertheless, the city of barcelona, where i was about seven hours ago, exactly the spot the attack happened, it has changed
8:06 pm
dramatically the past few hours. it is panic and peoplejust dramatically the past few hours. it is panic and people just waiting to see where it will all wrap up, when it will all wrap up. so that they can go back to normal. many people cannot reach their it is in the cordoned off area. many of the hotels are in fact in the area of las ramblas, where it all happen. it is affecting many tourists as well, as this is ongoing, both the investigation in the area that has been cordoned off for the crowds to walk onto. as you have been talking i have heard the sirens behind you and seen the blue flashing lights go by. we only have one name so far released by the police, driss oukabir. they say he rented the van involved. but just oukabir. they say he rented the van involved. butjust remind us, in the last few hours, a lot of people in the city have been terribly frightened because there were rumours about gun men, about a possible hostage. many, in fact, many people said that in a restau ra nt many people said that in a restaurant hostage crisis is happening and it's ongoing, they
8:07 pm
have big guns and there are's of them. none of this turned out to be true. as you can imagine, the situation like this, notjust word—of—mouth but obviously on social media, things get out and they are not true. they are on comfort, and it creates more fear. in the population. add to couple that with the pictures that were released, many have seen them, horrifying images of people on the ground, bleeding, something to be unconscious in the middle of la rambla, where thousands of people walk by, they know this spot. so that adds to the feeling, the reality that this might be an ongoing situation and it has not ended. there is a possibility of something else happening. hence this crowd that just ran something else happening. hence this crowd thatjust ran across the street a few minutes ago. very much panicked, not knowing why they were running, but they were running because somebody said something and everybody followed. thank you. i know he will bring us an eyewitness
8:08 pm
report if there are any further development at the scene. we could hear helicopters above your head. it is clear that security is a is ongoing. thank you very much. i also wa nt to ongoing. thank you very much. i also want to bring you some of the reaction. the world has been watching this terror attack in barcelona. for example, another —— a number of tributes from within barcelona. the football club say they are deeply saddened by the attack on our city, our thoughts with the victims, the family, the people of barcelona. gareth bale of real madrid... and then as you go around the world. for example, this just brief from melania trump, the first lady of the united states. the ellen show, the world of entertainment as well. people all watching, people all feeling for those who were caught up in this, injured, killed, traumatised by what has happened and may still be an
8:09 pm
folding. we will bring you more reaction and we'll keep in touch with what is happening on the ground. iwant with what is happening on the ground. i want to talk to tom burridge, ourformer spain correspondent. tom, i know you were actually listening into spanish radio. there is a press conference starting right now. the head of the cata la n starting right now. the head of the catalan government, catalu nya starting right now. the head of the catalan government, catalunya has a very devolved government with their own police force, mossos, they are leading this investigation. it has literally. begun. he said that according to solidarity amongst communities, although there is nothing at this stage to link this terror attack with any islamist group at the moment, it is far too early to start making that assumption or theory, even. early to start making that assumption ortheory, even. but, you know, you have muslim groups in spain coming out quite clearly now via spanish media and condemning this attack in the strongest possible terms. the islamic commission of spain. in a separate incident, this information is coming from a catalan newspaper, they have
8:10 pm
got a lot ofjournalists on the ground, they are telling us about this incident in a place to the west of barcelona, really out of the city, about three kilometres. they are saying there was a shoot out there. this spanish newspaper, cata la n there. this spanish newspaper, catalan newspaper, saying that basically that was linked earlier in the evening, people have been following this story for a while now, there were reports of a police officer being run down by a car. they are saying it was linked to that. the car was followed to this area just outside of barcelona and there was a shoot out and one suspect has been killed. this was a separate incident? yes, we need to get across this press conference happening in barcelona and ascertain what the actual facts about this incident. there is information coming from a different town called vic, that is in cars —— barcelona, well outside of barcelona, a car has
8:11 pm
been impounded there. the mayor of that town is saying that that, by now at least, that part is linked to the investigation. it might turn out inafew the investigation. it might turn out in a few minutes time, later in the evening, that that part has nothing to do with the terror attack in the centre of barcelona. viewers need to know that we are watching not only the centre of barcelona, but the incident on the outskirts and this one in vickers, a town well outside barcelona. just to get us back to the basics, it has been confirmed by the basics, it has been confirmed by the police that they are looking at at least 13 deaths? i have just watched a couple of videos. they are horrific. coming from a journalist friend in spain, actually, who is in barcelona, at least a friend of his has sent him the videos. we know how quickly videos spread around these days. videos from las ramblas. it is just heartbreaking to see. it is quite shocking scenes. you know, it looks like children are among the casualties, for sure. but they are saying the official figure at the moment is 13 dead, that is coming
8:12 pm
from mossos, the catalan police. that they confirmed figure. they are saying 15 people injured, though. there are various figures about how many of those people are seriously injured. more than 80 have been hospitalised, that has just come through. two people have been arrested as well. i will let you catch up, i know you were listening in spanish. you were talking about harrowing images coming through. i should explain to our viewers, the police have said they are grateful to much of the media for not sharing some of these images. because they are of all. that message goes out to the wider public now. they are awful. the —— anybody can find video and share it, this is notjust this attack, it was the case in neath and paris. the police are saying that they do not want people to share the videos, people have been killed and have life changing injuries. keep listening and keep us up—to—date. we are working out how many different
8:13 pm
scenarios there are an folding. if you are just scenarios there are an folding. if you arejustjoining us, i want to remind you of our main story. a van has driven into crowds, killing at least 13 people in barcelona in spain and injuring 50. well, we were dust hearing 80. tom mark royal is an american tourist who just arrived when the attack began unfolding. this afternoon i came in on a flight, this afternoon i came in on a flight, and i was in a taxi just turning onto las ramblas. maybejust a block and a half from the town. i was just looking at the boulevard, from the back of the taxi. and then i heard this group of people scream at the same time. and you just don't think of this, naturally. and then i looked to my left, and i saw a white van with its front looking like it was broken out. and it was going. at
8:14 pm
first i thought it must be somebody just working and driving, like a service vehicle. then i realised he was going entirely too fast. it looked to me as if he was going left to right, hitting people at the little stands. there were people shopping, basically. and all of a sudden people werejust shopping, basically. and all of a sudden people were just screaming and running. my taxi stopped. we knew immediately, you know, naturally what was happening and what was going on at that moment. and we waited for a second. and my taxi driver just and we waited for a second. and my taxi driverjust started saying, oh, my god, oh, my god. and i was in shock. and then we just turned right around the corner, because i was literally near my hotel. and i ran into the hotel. and then everyone was running into any space, of course, that they could find for safety. and they were coming into the hotel and screaming. interesting, i turned around and they were starting to run the other way. and that was when the hotel
8:15 pm
staff put me behind the front desk down on the ground. and that that point ijust... itjust seemed so real. —— it seemed so real. they got all of us together in a ballroom, just in the interim of the hotel, which to me didn't feel safe at all because there was really no... there was nobody and to protect the room of people. and for better or for worse, i left the room and i said, just give me a room key now. they gave me a key and i came upstairs. i figured i would rather be one person in hundreds of rooms than hundreds of people in one room. and now i'm just... ican of people in one room. and now i'm just... i can see every body across at the other hotel, everybody is just watching out of their window, watching, what now? we are keeping across the story in barcelona for you. in the last human as we have heard that at least 13 have been killed, 80 hospitalised —— in the last humanist. the messages
8:16 pm
of solidarity coming in from around the world. i want to show you this, which is pretty important, from the man of barcelona. —— the mayor of barcelona. a defiant message and a message of gratitude to the reaction that's coming in from around the world. mariano rajoy as well, the spanish prime minister. he is saying basically he is going to barcelona committee is on his way, talking about the maximum coordination to stop the perpetrators and strengthen security and to think, to tend to all of those who have been affected. he is talking about unity as well. i brought you a couple of reactions from barcelona football club and a real madrid player. manchester united... the world of sport, entertainment, politics, all coming through. a current barcelona player here. you know, as we were hearing earlier
8:17 pm
from our correspondent on the ground, there are still security operations going on, still helicopters in the sky, sirens on the streets, people who are very frightened and have been fighting for hours. not only because of what has happened with the car racing down the street, ploughing into people, injuring and killing so many, but the reports there have been, which the police now say are erroneous. there were reports of a couple of gunmen in a bar, possibly hostagetaking. and this kind of thing meant that many of the people in barcelona, residents and all of the foreign tourist, were petrified and really didn't know where to go. i want to bring you another eyewitness reaction. one of those who have spoken to the bbc is shelby mansell from bristol in the uk. she was ina mansell from bristol in the uk. she was in a market near the scene of the attack, and told us what she was seeing. we were in a market, which is an las
8:18 pm
ramblas. and we were just about to go back onto the main street. but we stopped to look at some cakes in the bakery. and suddenly there was screaming, and hundreds of people just swarmed towards us, screaming and running. lots of confusion. we ran into the bakery and ran up the stairs to hide. as we looked out the window, people were still running through the market. hundreds and hundreds of people. running through the market. shutters were coming down. just lots of screaming and running. and then we waited. for a few minutes, and it seemed to calm down. we were told we could go up. so we went out back into the market. and the second wave hit. we were told it wasn't safe and we had to get back inside. the police then swept through the market with guns. from where we were, we could see through the market. there were about seven police officers with guns, surrounding a doorway. and then
8:19 pm
that's the point where we just sort of head under the table, upstairs in the bakery. and wejust of head under the table, upstairs in the bakery. and we just waited to hear. the woman said that she had run off las ramblas and heard gunshots. then we were there for about a0 minutes, i think, gunshots. then we were there for about a0 minutes, ithink, hiding. and then we were told it was safe to come out, but we must move away from the area. i have come back to the desk where tom burridge, ourformer spain correspondent, is keeping on top of everything and simultaneously reading the spanish reports and listening to spanish radio. tell us where we are at? we have just had a press co nfe re nce where we are at? we have just had a press conference at catalonia's regional government, significant devolved powers to that government. they are saying 90 victims but 50 injured. i guess that is people caught up in the incident, but 50 injured. so, a new grim figure i guess coming out as part of that press co nfe re nce guess coming out as part of that press conference will stop 15 people are said to be in a very serious condition. and of course, we all
8:20 pm
knew that it is 13 dead, confirmed dead, for now. also, two people arrested. and obviously we have been hearing, and it does seem that more spanish media are backing this up, that one suspect has been shot in a shoot out with police in an area to the west of barcelona city. so, still in catalonia about a couple of kilometres to the west of the city. potentially linked to the record was yellow that is what spanish media are saying. they are basically saying that it could have been linked. there were reports earlier on another main avenue. las ramblas isa on another main avenue. las ramblas is a big avenue, but it is mainly a pedestrian area. traffic flows down the small side roads down the side of the big avenue. diagonal is a much more kind of traffic through fear, a big, big avenue. on that avenue earlier there were reports that a police officer had been run down. spanish media are linking that policeman being run down by what
8:21 pm
they are saying is a car who broke through point of control. catalan police, once this started happening, they were throwing up roadblocks all over the place trying to control the flow of people and get the city into lockdown. and then they are saying that this car broke through a control, according to a catalan newspaper that is a pretty trustworthy source, although this is an evolving situation so some of these details could end up being wrong, but at the moment they and other spanish media are backing them up other spanish media are backing them up and saying that there was a shoot out in this area linked to the policeman being run down in the centre of barcelona, and a shoot out just outside of the city, one suspect that. one suspect dead and two arrests. we have just had another update to say that the figure is now 12 dead. and we said 50 injured. i heard 12 in the press conference on spanish radio. that's a bit confusing. it is an evolving situation. people are being treated on the ground as well. they were saying 13, i heard that on spanish radio but i wasn't sure that i heard
8:22 pm
it correctly. i heard them saying paul doswell. it seems that the figures are changing. it is a really shocking incident —— i heard them saying 12 as well. police are following leeds. we have had great mers from the royal household in spain. there is a statement coming out from them —— we have heard from rural household in spain. mariano rajoy, the spanish prime minister, he said that terrorists will never defeat a country that loves freedom against barbarity. at 12pm tomorrow, this was coming out of the press conference in placa de catalunya, one of the main squares in barcelona, almost an las ramblas, there will be one minute's silence at 12pm tomorrow. and the mayoress of barcelona was talking about that. she was coming out and saying, look, you know, barcelona, we are proud of our city, it is a diverse place and
8:23 pm
a peaceful place, normally. it is proud of diversity and democracy. she said they are trying to spread hate, and those people who carried out this terrible attack will not succeed. tom, keep listening, the across the developing situation. thank you very much. just to let you know, we are going to keep you right up know, we are going to keep you right up to date with all of the stories breaking from barcelona in the security operation and we are keeping on top of the casualty list. obviously that is changing. going to get you some other news. in the us, the fallout from the violence in cha rlottesville the fallout from the violence in charlottesville continues. a tweet sent by president trump today rather ru bs salt sent by president trump today rather rubs salt in the wounds reopened by the deaths and injuries in virginia at the weekend. it is sad to see the history and codjo of our great country being ripped apart with the

removal of our beautiful statues and monuments. he was referring to the age old debate over relics of the proslavery southern confederacy, the side that was of course defeated in america's civil war. that is what started the trouble in charl is full. there was an organised protest at the weekend against the removal of this statute of a confederate general. there are dozens more such monuments around the country. there isa map monuments around the country. there is a map in the new york times today which is interesting. this shows just some of the places where you can see these monuments. the marked in red are where statues and monuments have been removed from public grounds. the marks in great where they are expected to be taken down. you can seejust where they are expected to be taken down. you can see just what a big national story this is. let's bring up national story this is. let's bring up anthony zurcher in washington for us is ever hear an outside schools. donald trump is a very defiant wit. —— donald trump said a very defiant wit and it seems like he is spoiling for this fight. he wants this debate
8:25 pm
to be overcome by fritz was that she is. a poll came out earlier today showing that 60% of americans actually don't mind having this that use bad, the smaller minority want them removed —— by statues there. if donald trump can change the nature of this debate into whether or not that use can be on public land, i think that as a fight they are willing to have —— whether or not that use. it indicates that donald trump is coming down with both feet in favour of what the people, the white nationalists were marching for on saturday, which coming just a few days after the violence in cha rlottesville is days after the violence in charlottesville is pretty remarkable. anthony zurcher, thank you for that quick update. i should say that we are going to keep you well up—to—date with what is happening in barcelona. the next edition of outside source begins in just the few minutes. tuesday with us, we'll keep you right up to date and might‘s moving news story. —— do stay with us. good evening. i know that some may
