the attacks in barcelona and cambrils with an explosion on wednesday in the town of alcanar, in which one person died. police believe a terror cell at the house was using it for bomb—making. among those arrested, this man, originally from morocco, whose documents were used to rent the van in barcelona. but he denies any involvement, saying that his identity papers had been stolen. the spanish prime minister called an emergency cabinet meeting after announcing three days of official mourning. he has denounced what he called the "jihadist attack" and said spain will not submit to terror. in barcelona, las ramblas is full of people once again. this world—famous promenade apparently unbowed by the terror attack here. but those killed and injured are being remembered in tributes of flowers and candles along the street. the nation is grieving and the world is watching. let's just show you the scene here

that was operating here in barcelona and in cambrils as well? what we know for the moment, i don't have any further information than what you know to the press, but it appears to be a unique plot trying to attack in different moments and... it was perpetrated by different terrorists but it is very early to make any other statements about how the attack was organised and how people were involved, we should wait until the law enforcement and the police officers go through the investigation and we will have more clear information. currently, we have to rely on arable law forcing officers, they're really good, they're professional, they have been fighting against terrorism for many years in spain and we have a history of fighting against terrorism. they know how to do it

and so one of the guys jumped up and had a look, see what was going on, and then people started running past us, and then one of the guys said, "run!" and we came out of the bar and i was standing on the street, and i got my phone out, because i saw this guy come running towards me. and then i started filming. first, somebody said, "call the police." within 20, 30 seconds, the police turned up, then they drew their guns, shouting something to the guy. and then next thing i know there were shots fired. he went down, and within two seconds he stood back up, then he stepped over a fence, then he came walking to the police, he was smiling, he was laughing at them, and they shot him again and then he fell down. and people might be amazed that

you would just film that. were you aware of what was going to unfold as you started filming? not until the police turned up, and it was only when the police turned up with their guns drawn then i realised, this is serious. and then when the first shots were fired, in one mind people were shouting me to come on and go, and in the other mind, the adrenaline was in there and i thought, i'lljust carry on filming, so that's what i did. that was fitzroy davies who filmed those pictures he's from wolverhampton and filmed some of those police action where they shot dead five terror suspects. i'm hearing that the de facto has gone up hearing that the de facto has gone up to 14, it was standing at 13 all

the street and clearly looking for someone, we now know. by the time we got back to our street, we could see where the van had ended and we could see bodies on the floor, but we just made our way back to our apartment as quickly as we could, because we'd then ended up within the police cordon, couldn't actually leave the building because obviously the marketplace where a lot of the armed police were was literally behind our building, so we were sort of in this trapped position. how long were you trapped there for? have you been able to go back to your apartment now? yeah, we stayed in the apartment for about two or three hours until we'd got all the international news. there was nothing on the news for about 20 minutes, half—an—hour, so we didn't really know the severity of what had happened, apart from by judging from the numbers of people running through the streets and the volume of police, and the helicopters overhead, so we knew that it was fairly serious. we left our apartment probably about 9:30pm last night to go and meet friends on the other side of barcelona, just check that they were all 0k, and the whole city was fairly quiet, fairly subdued, whereas normally

you'd expect barcelona to be buzzing at this time of year. 0bviously everyone is now very on edge. i suppose if you had been walking down las ramblas a few minutes earlier, you could have been caught up in the attack? absolutely, we literally would have been where the van ended up had we been two minutes earlier, because that's exactly where we were headed, to turn down the side street to go into our hotel. so we're really grateful that we were just about two minutes behind where the attack actually happened. you're on holiday here — are you staying, despite what's happened ? yeah, we're saying, we're staying until monday. we're just taking it day by day, seeing how things go. it was obviously... we were very freaked out last night and on edge, feel a little bit calmer today and, as you've mentioned, las ramblas is sort of getting back to some semblance of normality, there's lots of people down there and the stalls are starting to open back up. we feel fairly reassured by the volume of police and the security service's response,

so, yeah, we're intending to stay. but you're a bit shaken? a little bit shocked, a little bit on edge still. sort of hasn't really sunk in. as i say, the first sort of ten minutes after the attack, it was all fairly surreal, half the crowds were running and screaming away and the other half had no clue what was actually happening at all, so they're just standing around looking, wondering what's going on, so it was all a bit surreal for that first bit. then, as i say, once it became clear what's happening, that's when it starts to sink in, and when we saw people on the floor being tended to by emergency services you suddenly realise the severity of the situation, and we were very concerned last night until they'd arrested anyone, because we didn't know where anyone was. 0bviously now we hear that the driver's probably still unapprehended, so that does leave a little bit of apprehension, you know, worried about where we're going to go tonight or what we're going to do today. we want to stay in

secure places, really. and obviously there have been a string of these vehicle attacks across europe, including london. did you realise pretty quickly that that's probably what it was, when you saw everybody running? yeah, i think we realised, when the first tourist was shouting out, "people have been hit, there's blood," we thought it was perhaps just a tragic car accident. by that time we saw the volume of police, and then we could see there was the van there and bodies on the floor, we guessed pretty quickly that this was some form of deliberate attack. especially knowing las ramblas as well, it's a prime target for that sort of attack because you've got concentrated pedestrians in a small area — there is literally nowhere to run. as that van was going down, those people would've had nowhere to go because you've got traffic either side of you and literally just a complete mass of people in the middle, so there was nowhere to escape, so we guessed exactly what was going on. that was richard gregg talking to me

local time, in cambrils, 5pm, at around one in the morning localtime, in cambrils, about100 kilometres from here on the coast, south—west from barcelona, a seaside town. that was when another vehicle, this time an audi car was driven into people, into pedestrians. seven we re into people, into pedestrians. seven were injured including a police officer. armed police responded very quickly, the car overturned and armed police shot dead five suspects. there were reports that they were wearing explosive belts as well. this is what some eyewitnesses there in cambrils told us. a couple of eyewitnesses to what happened in cambrils. it now appears there was a sizeable terror network in operation in catalonia, both here in barcelona and in cambrils. it is clear the authorities are talking perhaps eight to ten people in that cell. maybe more. there are three arrests made in connection with the barcelona attack, the driver of the van fled, got out of the vehicle and

fled on foot. he is still being searched for. i have been talking to someone else who witnessed the aftermath of the barcelona attack here in las ramblas, this is what he told me. iwas here in las ramblas, this is what he told me. i was at the top of the street, having a coffee, my normal routine. then there was a noise. next thing you know, coming from the bottom of that street was a stampede of people, thousands of people just running and running. it was a dead giveaway that something was wrong. we turned the corner, where the restaurant cafe is and we all ran inside. they locked us and we all ran inside. they locked us in. we were locked in for about three and a half hours. no one would give us any information, things were filtering through about them taking hostages. we were just inside there, chaos. children were crying. women crying. it was... i was quite

relaxed because i had not seen the man. but then after three and a half hours they let us go. the police made us walk up the aisle which was up made us walk up the aisle which was up the street. and then as we got to the cordoned—off area, there was another bang, like a noise. we started running. and everyone just panicked, there was another stampede. so at that point, i wasn't going to stick around. ijust ran. i ran for my life. and, yeah, it was just chaos. how long was it before you realised that this was a terror attack, that a vehicle had been used and that people had been killed? it was... well, we didn't know if it was terrorism or if was just someone who was crazy or something. but it took us about half an hour to kind of figure out what was going on. we were asking people who had run into the restaurant we were locked in what was happening. they didn't know because obviously, they were in shock, they were crying. it was quite harrowing, to be honest. people obviously, absolutely terrified. we have seen the pictures, people just running for their lives? yeah, running for their lives. it was pandemonium in the streets. and then they, the police cordoned off everything so it was impossible to get on.

people who lived in this area were just stuck. you know, so if you wanted to try and get to your safe place at home, you had to just stick around and hope that these suspects were apprehended without any problems. i went through the ones in london when i was young, so, yeah, it's just very important that we get back to normal routine, people just go back to doing what they do. it was quite sad for me, because yeah, this is an isolated incident. but in other places around the world, this is happening on a daily basis. and we need to help them, know. it's not just. .. it happens once here, it's small—scale and we're all, like, you know, panicking. it's happening in places around the world with ten times the scale, 20 times the scale. so it's just important that we get back to our normal routine and keep on doing the things we do, go to the places we go to. and barcelona is an amazing city. so, yeah, just please come and visit. because it's beautiful. and las ramblas, of course, such a tourist destination. anyone who comes to barcelona comes to las ramblas. yeah, everyone and anyone.

my friends were here two days ago and they left on sunday. and i'm so glad they're 0k. but, yeah, it's just the place to be. you look at it, it's an iconic street, people selling, it's vibrant, it's alive. so it's a bit of a shock that it does happen to us. the people behind this, and we are hearing there might have been a terror cell of eight people, maybe, who planned this, it was obviously an attack on tourists, and people not only from this part of the world but from right around the world who come to barcelona to see what a beautiful city it is. yeah, i mean, i guess it'sjust an attack on freedom and on people who want to live, you know, happy lives. but it's important that we have compassion against people around the world and people who, you know, not everyone is bad. so... yeah, it's important we just carry on and keep living the way we live. 13 people killed, doesn't injured. 13 people killed, dozens injured. what were your feelings about the people who did this? devastating. how are you going to feel? you know, it's on my street.

beautiful spot. there are people everywhere, friends were saying, have you been there? absolutely. it's a fantastic spot to gather, to people watch, to have lunch. the actions were terrifying and awful, but i want to reiterate a feeling that as a mamma, we have to get out and say to the terrorists that we will carry on. we will visit these beautiful parts of the world. living a full life is not about living at home scared to leave your front door, it's about getting out and celebrating life. the vast majority of people are good, decent human beings. you are here on holiday, who are you with? i am with my daughter and husband, we're flying back tonight. we had been on the bus tour yesterday, and we were literally two minutes away from the attacks on people in the hotel were very scared, very lucky, we feel really sad for those people. again, it

to bbc newsroom live. spanish police say they have shot dead five suspected terrorists in the seaside resort of cambrils overnight, after a second attack in the country within 12 hours. the men, who were reported to be wearing fake explosive belts, were killed after driving into a group of people, including a police officer. a woman has died from her injuries. italian tourist bruno gulotta has been named as one of the victims killed on the ramblas. the attack in cambrils happened just hours after 13 people were killed and almost 100 injured in barcelona, after a van was driven into pedestrians along las ramblas.

so far three people have been arrested, none of whom are the driver of the van. so—called islamic state have claimed responsibility but have offered no proof. citizens of some 24 countries are said to have been caught up in the attack. officials say they believe an explosion in a house, in a small village over 100 miles away from barcelona, on wednesday is also linked. let's go live to barcelona. we are in placa de catalunya, catalonia square, right here in the heart of barcelona. just over an hour ago, this square was packed with thousands of people he wanted to come onto the streets of barcelona to observe a minute's silence in memory of those who lost their lives and were injured in these two separate terrorist attacks, but also

to show defiance and that they are not afraid. they were chanting after the minute's silence, we are not scared, we are not afraid. and there was a loud round of applause from the crowd, a gesture of defiance that they will not be cowed. the king of spain and prime minister of spain, mariano rajoy, were also here. as well as the attack here in barcelona, yesterday, that left 13 people dead and dozens more injured at las ramblas when a van was driven at las ramblas when a van was driven at high speed for half a climate, ploughing pedestrians and tourists, then in the early hours of the morning local time, there was a second attack at cambrils, a hundred kilometres south of barcelona, a seaside town where a car was driven into pedestrians, seven people injured including a police officer. and we know now, one killed as well. and we know now, one killed as well.

and this time, the car overturned, armed police were there on the scene very quickly and shot dead five terror suspects, some of whom a p pa re ntly terror suspects, some of whom apparently were wearing explosive belts. that get this report from richard lister. in cambrils, this man has canisters strapped to his chest and appears to be taunting police. they opened fire. the man is hit but gets back up. and the shooting continues as bystanders look on. eventually, he is killed. he is one of five terrorist suspects shot dead by police here. gunshots. they were suspected of having driven a car into pedestrians in cambrils at about 1am, injuring seven people and leaving many others in shock. translation: i suddenly heard "bang, bang, bang" here in the port. and after the bang, bang, bang, people were screaming. and then the police screaming. and then more screaming. i was nervous. i did not know where to go. i went to the beach and hid there.

eight hours earlier, another vehicle on another spanish street being used as a weapon. this was las ramblas in barcelona. crowded with tourists and shoppers when a white van drove through them all, mowing down people for half a kilometre before the driver fled. it was the definition of fear yesterday. people were terrified. they were running without knowing in which direction they were going. it was incredible to watch how quickly people reacted. how quickly people responded and worked together. because people were scared, people did not know what to do. through working together, a lot of people were in safer places. the authorities are now linking the attacks in barcelona and cambrils with an explosion on wednesday in the town of alcanar, in which one person died. police believe a terror cell at the house was using it for bomb—making. among those arrested, this man, driss 0ukabir, originally from morocco, whose documents were used to rent the van in barcelona. but he denies any involvement, saying that his identity papers had been stolen.

the spanish prime minister called an emergency cabinet meeting after announcing three days of official mourning. he has denounced what he called the "jihadist attack" and said spain will not submit to terror. in barcelona, las ramblas is full of people once again. this world—famous promenade apparently unbowed by the terror attack here. but those killed and injured are being remembered in tributes of flowers and candles along the street. the nation is grieving and the world is watching. the people who witnessed what happened here are still in a state of shock but anxious to come at onto the streets to show they would be cowed by what has happened. let's talk to stephanie wilson who is on holiday here and is from runcorn in

england, tell us, stephanie, what you saw where you were when you happen. —— winkleman in england. samaraweera on the corner where the attack happened. an hour before we we re aware attack happened. an hour before we were aware the attack happened, there were so many people around and everyone was enjoying the sunshine, enjoying a carefree life, having fun, we were trying to find somewhere to have a glass of wine and enjoy it. and then an hour before, knee and my partner were just saying how there are so much police around, just circulating that we we re police around, just circulating that we were like, it's a bit weird, isn't it was mac and with an an hour of that, there was this really loud bang and screams. and i had my back twinge towards them. and shot up turned around and there was lots of people just running, tables everywhere, glasses, beating that i remember most is the flip flops. they were just everywhere. it was like people just vanished because they run for their lives. there was a second language scared of rome

pedestrians. —— 100 kilometres away. police shot suspects. and a man from britain took some video on his phone. gunshot. shouting. that dramatic footage taken on his phone by fitzroy davies from wolverhampton, who was visiting cambrils. i talked to him about what he had seen and heard. we were sitting in a bar by the front, and some girls

just ran in, scared, and then fear on their faces, and so one of the guys jumped up and had a look, see what was going on, and then people started running past us, and then one of the guys said, "run!" and we came out of the bar and i was standing on the street, and i got my phone out, because i saw this guy come running towards me. and then i started filming. first, somebody said, "call the police." within 20, 30 seconds, the police turned up, then they drew their guns, shouting something to the guy. and then next thing i know there were shots fired. he went down, and within two seconds he stood back up, then he stepped over a fence, then he came walking to the police, he was smiling, he was laughing at them, and they shot him again and then he fell down. and people might be amazed that you would just film that.

were you aware of what was going to unfold as you started filming? not until the police turned up, and it was only when the police turned up with their guns drawn then i realised, this is serious. and then when the first shots were fired, in one mind people were shouting me to come on and go, and in the other mind, the adrenaline was in there and i thought, i'lljust carry on filming, so that's what i did. fitzroy davies from wolverhampton telling me what he saw and taking extraordinary to video footage on his phone. we also spoke to a couple of other eyewitnesses in cambrils. theirs were some eyewitnesses in cambrils on what happened there in the early hours of the morning,

local time. ijust the early hours of the morning, local time. i just want to show you some pictures now from las ramblas, just very close to where we are here in the heart of barcelona. people have been laying flowers all through the morning and lighting candles. paying their respects to those who died. 13 people killed when that van rammed into them for about half a kilometre, swerving left and right, weaving through pedestrians on the pavement and striving very high speed. las ramblas is one of the great tourist attractions in barcelona and all of europe, really, people come from all over the world to visit this beautiful city and las ramblas is right at the heart of barcelona, where everyone wants to go for a stroll. it was packed with people yesterday when the van struck. but then after the attack here 80 hours later, that attack in cambrils and i think we can speak to cbs reporter. —— a fewer hours later. he isn't cambrils ryan for us. can you tell us what happened?

while, you had that attack here, you could hear gunfire from several different areas up and down the street, it was a police shoot out. terrorists had struggled appeared to be suicide vests on their bodies, those were later detonated by a bomb squad and find out not to be real operating suicide vests. but eyewitnesses here say they were panicked, they were afraid, they watched this unfolding, so these people with suicide vests and we have seen social media video that has been broadcast over and over again where you can hear the gunfire in that shoot out where police killed those five suspected terrorists. and it does appear that there is some sort of wider terror network? because we have had an attack here in barcelona, then that one is yours later in cambrils, and a network that was apparently off the radar authorities and catalonia?

absolutely. there are reports that the caa had won that in fact, spain to could be a target in coming weeks. —— the cia. but certainly, taking holiday—makers by surprise here, it's a scene that is unusual at the moment, an investigation is underway, police lined up and people have gone to look at this but on the other side of me here, you have the beautiful mediterranean on a beautiful mediterranean on a beautiful beach day. this of course, these attacks really affecting tourists. this is the heart of the tourists. this is the heart of the tourist time here it in spain. people describe scenes of panic and the spanish police are reporting now, saying now that this indeed appeared to be a wave of attacks that had them than by terrorists. and cbs news is learning that this may not have just been inspired by as is but this may have indeed been carried out by isis itself. and in

a member of congress and former secretary of state for security. because what terrorists want to do to all our cities, to all our countries, is to threaten us, try to make us really be scared and try to change the way we live. what they are looking for is our reaction. what they want is our overreaction. it is really important that, together, we support our administrations, law enforcement officers and work against terrorism and send a message saying we are not going to be defeated by terrorists, ever. and just give us what you know about these attacks. it seems there was a sort of terrorist network, a terrorist cell, at least one cell that was operating here in barcelona and in cambrils as well? what we know for the moment, i don't have any further information than what you know

through the press, but it appears to be a unique plot trying to attack in different moments and... it was perpetrated by different terrorists but it is very early to make any other statements about how the attack was organised and how people were involved, we should wait until the law ——and how many people were involved, we should wait until the law enforcement and the police officers go through the investigation and we will have more clear information. we have to rely on our law enforcement officers, they're really good, they're professional, they have been fighting against terrorism for many years in spain and we unfortunately have a history of fighting against terrorism. they know how to do it and i'm sure we will have clear information in the following days. we will know what kind of attack they were hoping to perpetrate, what were the real intentions. as we were saying, barcelona, of course, one of the great tourist cities of the world,

and las ramblas, where everyone comes when they go to barcelona. it was such a soft target, people walking up and down in the sunshine in the afternoon. yes, we have seen that another global cities, ——yes, we have seen that in other global cities, in london, manchester, paris, berlin, places where people from different countries get together for different purposes, business, tourism, whatever. what the terrorists want to do is just to give that message that they want to attack our way of life. they want to attack our values. they want to attack our common humanity. by targeting cities where there are many people gather together, different nationalities, so that they can show how they can harm all the world. so i think barcelona has the same situation, unfortunately, as any other european global city. it was attacked because we live

in freedom, we believe in diversity, pluralism and that is what terrorists want to destroy. there hasn't been a real terror attack in spain since 2004, i think. are you surprised that it is barcelona that has been targeted, even though as you say, we have seen so many attacks on other european cities in the last few month and use? ——on other european cities in the last few month and years? that is right, but we had a very, very horrible terrorist attack in 2004 in madrid and we have had many terrorist attacks from eta so we know what terrorism is. we are used to fighting against it. we see in other cities in europe, the threat is against all the world, our way of life, our

principles and values. it can happen in barcelona, in many other countries. we have seen many important police operations and many people were arrested and probably, we managed to tackle some of this problem in the past. but unfortunately, we cannot assure absolute safety. absolute security, global safety is really difficult to achieve in our cities. because freedom for people leaving and going whenever they want, sometimes it's difficult to avoid it. so what happened in barcelona is similar to what has happened in other european cities. what would you say about the people who turned out here in placa de catalunya in the middle of barcelona today to observe

a minute of silence, to applaud, chant and show they are not afraid. is it important that they came at a show defiance today? yes, i think the message of the people being united together and just giving that very clear message to the terrorist group, which is, we're not afraid and we're not going to change our way of life, we really have to be together to fight for what we believe in, to fight for our values. our common values. i think it's a really important message. we know from our experience in fighting against eta that this is the most powerful tool we have against terrorism. we had to fight against eta and it was very important to have people in the streets praying for peace and saying, we're never going to be defeated by violence or by terrorist groups. this is the same. we have a very resilient and strong civil society in europe and in spain, and we are showing the world that we are gathered and that we can be different in many ways but we share common

values, common humanity. we rely on respect for life, respect for liberty, respect for freedom, respect for many things. we want to show that to the world. we have, unfortunately, if a history of fighting against terrorist groups, against intolerance, extremism, and we're going to do that as many times as necessary. much more coming up from barcelona but that's just catch up with the good afternoon. a rather mixed outlook continues today and into the weekend. sunshine and showers this afternoon but some showers will be

ports today, the statement says, ready to meet british holiday—makers returning to the uk from the region. in order to take any witness accounts. anyone who has returned from spain could also call a confidential hotline, and there is a number to ring if you havejust returned and have any information. that is 0800789321. police are urging anyone with footage that may assist the investigation to upload it. the current threat, the police say, is global. it is only by working together that can be defeated. our network of counterterrorism police liaison officers posted in locations around the world to help us to aid investigations nationally and it says we have a long tradition of collaborating with the very capable spanish police on terrorism matters. the statement from the metropolitan police continues, in the uk the

current threat remains severe, meaning an attack is highly likely. and activity by the police and the security services continues around the clock. the police remain on heightened state of readiness. the key advice remains to run to a place of safety if you are in any concerns, if there is nowhere to run, then it is better to hide. that statement from the metropolitan police assistant commissioner mark rowley in the last few minutes. saying that the police are liaising with the spanish police as they continue their investigations into those two tax. spanish police say they have shot dead five suspected terrorists in the seaside resort of cambrils overnight, after a second attack in the country within 12 hours. the men, who were reported to be wearing fake explosive belts, were killed after driving into a group of people, including a police officer. a woman has died from her injuries. police say the situation there is now under control.

in the last half hour, italian tourist bruno gulotta has been named as one of the victims killed on the ramblas. the attack in cambrils happened just hours after 13 people were killed and almost 100 injured in barcelona, after a van was driven into pedestrians along las ramblas. the area, which is popular with tourists, was packed with holiday makers. witnesses have described seeing a white van zig—zagging at speed, deliberately targeting people, knocking many to the floor and sending others fleeing for cover in shops and cafes. police believe both the attacks are linked. so far three people have been arrested, none of whom are the driver of the van. so—called islamic state have claimed responsibility but have offered no proof. citizens of some 34 countries are said to have been caught up in the attack. one belgian national has been confirmed among the dead. france's foreign ministry said that 26 french nationals were injured, with at least 11

the man is hit but gets back up, and the shooting continues as bystanders look on. eventually he is killed. he is one of five terrorist suspects shot dead by police here. they were suspected of having driven a car into pedestrians in cambrils at about 1am, injuring seven people and leaving many others in shock. translation: i suddenly heard a bang, bang, bang here in the port. and after the bang, bang, people were screaming, and then the police screaming. and then more screaming, i was nervous, i did not know where to go. i went to the beach and hid there. eight hours earlier, another vehicle on another spanish street being used as a weapon. this was las ramblas in barcelona, crowded with tourists and shoppers when a white van drove through them all, mowing down people for half a kilometre

before the driver fled. it was the definition of fear yesterday. people were terrified, they were running without knowing which direction they were going. it was incredible to watch how quickly people acted, how quickly people responded and worked together because people were scared, people did not know what to do. through working together, a lot of people were in safer places. the authorities are now linking the attacks in barcelona and cambrils with an explosion on wednesday in the town of alcanar in which one person died. police believe a terror cell at the house was using it for bomb—making. among those arrested, this man, driss 0ukabir, originally from morocco, whose documents were used to rent of the van in barcelona. but he denies any involvement, saying his identity papers had been stolen. the spanish prime minister called an emergency cabinet meeting after announcing three days of official mourning. he's denounced what he called the jihadist attack, but said spain will not submit to terror. in barcelona, las ramblas is full

of people once again, this world—famous promenade apparently unbowed by the terror attack here. but those killed and injured are being remembered in tributes of flowers and candles along the street. the nation is grieving and the world is watching. let's go straight back to barcelona and my colleague ben who is live there for us now. hello. the latest we are hearing from the emergency services is that the combined casualty toll in terms of injuries from the barcelona attack and the cambrils attack is 130. we know 14 people were killed in all, 13 here, one in cambrils. the total number of injured as 130, to give you an idea of the scale of the

devastation from those two different attacks. the injured here in barcelona are attacks. the injured here in barcelona a re off attacks. the injured here in barcelona are off 34 different nationalities. the french, for example, 26 french casualties, 11 of them seriously ill. that gives you an idea of how different nations have been affected. the british foreign office saying there are a small number of british casualties among the victims of these attacks. here in barcelona, the mood is really one of the clients, we have seen those extraordinary images of people crowding into the square, catalonia square, wanting to not only have a minute's silence but also to shout out, to chance, we are not afraid, we're not scared. in message of defiance to the terrorists. with me is nafees hamid who was a few blocks away when the attack happened, and has been in the city for three years studying the link between values and identity in political movements, including terrorism. give us your impressions.” give us your impressions. i was a few blocks away. i heard people

screaming. running towards me. i immediately saw the police responding quickly, i could hear the sirens, helicopters in the air. it was a bit surreal in some ways, a terrorism researcher who has been researching your hardest to radicalisation in barcelona, to have an attack happened so close to home. it appears from what the police have said that there is quite a wide terror network behind the attack here and in cambrils as well. what do we know ofjihadists operating in spain and germany? there has not been a terror attack in spain since 2004. correct. there have been hundreds of arrests going on for the last few years, there are networks present, but for the most part they have been either trying to go to syria or trying to help coordinate attacks and other countries. all actively carrying out attacks in other countries. spain itself has not been the primary target. that is also a general trend we are seeing the terrorist attacks in europe, they do not have the freedom of

movement to carry out the ideal attacks or to go somewhere abroad. they are tending to attack more locally, and trying to maximise casualties. we have seen the vehicle once again, the rented vehicle used asa once again, the rented vehicle used as a terrorist weapon will stop it has happened so many times, in nice, berlin, london, now barcelona. this was something that was called upon in 2014 by the spokesperson of isis at the time. do not think of anything sophisticated, grab a knife from the draw, ram pedestrians with a car, hit them with rocks. people did not heed that advice at the time but as it becomes more difficult to do sophisticated attacks isis has been called on more for these low grade attacks, acting locally. what do the police do now? they are responding, they responded with force in cambrils. we know of five terror suspects were shot dead. the fa ct terror suspects were shot dead. the fact they were able to respond so quickly shows that maybe they were able to gain some intelligence at

the moment that let them know about that. also some of these people may have been on a watchlist before. often when you see terror attacks ta ke often when you see terror attacks take place in europe, the people we re take place in europe, the people were somewhat known. there were ongoing investigation is happening. so they just close ongoing investigation is happening. so theyjust close down very quickly on these people. there probably are other people under investigation, that will be arrested by the sooner, but nothing that can be done is to get the people surrounding the cell is not radicalise themselves to be called bystanders. to get them to come forward when they hear something will see something, to actually say something to police. terrorism researcher based in barcelona, thank you for your time. to recap, the latest that we know is that 13 people died here in barcelona yesterday. one person died in that attack in cambrils in which five terror suspects were shot dead by the police. they were wearing what were thought to be explosives, but those according to the authorities it turned out were fake.

know there are tens of thousands of british tourists in barcelona and other spanish cities. some may be very concerned about what they have seen and heard. recent figures show there are about 1 seen and heard. recent figures show there are about1 million brits there are about1 million brits there on holiday at the moment. we are in prime holiday season, and spain is one of the most popular destinations. obviously there will be concerns. as we saw from your footage earlier, people are already back out on las ramblas, doubling about their normal business. they have a right to be concerned and they should be following advice from local authorities, staying away from areas they have been told to stay away from, but in all cases it really is business as usual. the british are very resilient when it comes to holidays, and we do tend to say no, we will go no matter what. there is no reason to cancel, the fco has not changed their advice, they have not told us not to go. that has an implication on if you do wa nt to that has an implication on if you do want to cancel, you will know you

are not automatically entitled to do so. we have seen so many people out there in the centre of barcelona, locals and tourists. standing there, for that minute silence, insisting that they will not be deterred. do you think it will in any way damage barcelona's reputation as a favourite destination for tourists, not just from favourite destination for tourists, notjust from britain but many other countries? i think it is unlikely. what tends to happen when we have seen similar events in other cities is that the immediate short term is it does not, because people have booked them they cannot cancel without losing their money. we do not see the bookings drop off straightaway. we might see a few people choose a different city less well—known city, that might become a trend. the longer term, people tend to be quite resilient. and quite resolute. we will not change what we going to do. of course we know that after the attack, the terrorist attacks on tunisia, the tourist industry there has taken a real

downturn. yet of course, since then we have seen so many of these attacks here in the uk, in london, in other countries across europe, france and belgium. of course. the difference there, tunisia, egypt is another one, what actually happened was the fco, the advice changed. they said you could not go there so that invalidated pupils travel insurance. the tour operators stopped offering trips there, airline stopped flying. that is what really makes the impact, is in the industry reacts. it actually has its hands tied and cannot get people out there. i think if you look, as he said, things have happened in london and paris, in germany. the places that are very popular, with people, why does it end if you stop travelling? do you stop getting out of bed in the morning, crossing the street? it is still statistically, you are much safer going on holiday then you are driving in your car to then you are driving in your car to the airport for example. thank you very much indeed. stephanie walton was on las ramblas yesterday and spoke to ben brown.

an hourand a an hour and a half before, we were literally walking where the attack happened. there were so many people around, everybody was enjoying the sunshine, living a carefree life and having fun. we tried to find somewhere to have a glass of wine and enjoy it. then, an hour before, me and my partner were just saying how there were so much peace around, it was a bit weird, isn't it? —— there were so many police around, circulating. then after that we heard a loud bang, and screams. i had my back turned, and i shot up and turned around in there were these floods of people just running. ta bles these floods of people just running. tables everywhere, glasses, and the thing i remember the most was the flip—flops. they were just everywhere. it was like people had just vanished, they had run for their lives. then there was a second van, which scared everybody else. we ran into the cafe. they shut all the shutters. my partner pushed me into

a corner, all i kept thinking about was... ifelt like paris, london, the attacks were they came into bars and stuff and hurt people. the owners opened a back door so eve ryo ne owners opened a back door so everyone could run through, then they pushed everybody against the walls, because if another car came, they would then... you have a better chance. that's what we did. it was absolutely terrifying. when i turned around, i saw bodies everywhere. it's heartbreaking. really heartbreaking. you knew instantly, did you, that this was some sort of terror attack? especially with the increased police presence and stuff. when you heard that bang, obviously recent things happened, you know something is really wrong. it's not right. the sheer panic on everyone's faces. you know you have to run and get to safety. you have to hide. that instinct kicked in. but initially i just froze. that instinct kicked in. but initially ijust froze. you know... all those people. so many, kids everywhere. it was horrific, that

image will stay in my mind for as long as possible. the police were there in large numbers before the attack. do you think perhaps they knew something might be going to happen? it felt like that. initially when we saw those police, we did not think something would happen, because you do not think. you are in barcelona, you don't think anything will happen. there were so many around, circulating, buti will happen. there were so many around, circulating, but i must applaud them. within seconds, they we re applaud them. within seconds, they were at that scene, auditing everybody. they kept pushing everybody, cuddling little girls and stuff to make sure they were 0k. —— cordoning everybody. you have said to me you have seen terror attacks unfolding on tv, but to be in the middle of it, to see it for real. you do not comprehend, when you see them running and the panic on the faces, you just watch it. but when you are in the midst of it, running for your life as well, it, running for your life as well, it isa it, running for your life as well, it is a feeling i have never ever experienced before and i never want to experience it again. my heart goes out to everybody who was hurt,

or lost their lives. it's absolutely tragic what happened, broke my heart. it's such a beautiful city. you were here as a surprise for your boyfriend, is that right? yeah, a surprise he won't forget. it was a birthday trip away. we landed yesterday morning. went to the hotel, came back, looking for somewhere to enjoy some wine, enjoy the atmosphere and stuff. then that tragedy happened. thankfully we fly back tomorrow. people were coming back tomorrow. people were coming back onto the streets today, in large numbers, to say, chanting, we're not scared, we are not afraid. is that the message we need to go out? absolutely, we cannot let these people dictate our lives. you may not like it, but we cannot let them. everybody has to come together. that happened last night. it was so beautiful. even today, walking on the street, still a bit of an edgy feeling. if you hear a siren across the road, you are a bit like... bit edgy. but everyone is in the
