are pouring into towns and cities, lagos has always had that mixed blessings of having to deal with the influx of people. blessings of having to deal unfortunately for us, in the last two or three years, it has been a deluge. in the last two or three years, this is what an african mega city looks like. it is crowded, it is chaotic and it is crumbling. lagos is already struggling to house, to look after and to educate the way over 21 million people already living here, let alone the millions more that are predicted to crush into this city. are predicted to crush but there is an incredible energy about the place and it is a matter of tapping that and using that creative thinking to turn it into an opportunity. creative thinking to turn it this festival celebrates old historic lagos, the masquerades represent the spirits of the dead, returned to cleanse the streets of evil and to pray for its prosperity. returned to cleanse the streets of emerging from the downtown slums is one answer to the festival's prayers, building tower blocks, building up.

this is bbc news. the countdown has begun to a total solar eclipse which takes place tomorrow. — with millions of americans preparing to see this once in a lifetime spectacle. it will be the first eclipse to cross the usa from coast to coast in 99 years. people in the uk will be able to see a partial eclipse at about 8pm tomorrow as long as there are clear skies. a short time ago i spoke to simon calder, travel editor for the independent, who's eclipse chasing with millions of americans. he's on the ground at the grand tetons national park in wyoming and tolds us about the built up to tomorrow's great event. i'm at one of the official eclipse viewing sites, just north of the city ofjackson in wyoming. there is intense excitement here, of course, because this is the great cosmic coincidence. total solar eclipse of 2017.

so rare that it's passing over only one country, the united states, that it's being called the great american eclipse. we were hearing from kentucky, i'm afraid the skies aren't looking quite as good there as they are here. one reason that this part of the us is so popular with eclipse spotters, they are gathering in their tens of thousands, is because of the weather data for the third week in august, shows very good odds of a clear sky. anyone who was in cornwall for the british total solar eclipse in 1999 will realise that as an essential ingredient. by this time tomorrow, the eclipse willjust be leaving us territory after sweeping the nation from to oregon, on the pacific coast, to chrlestown, south carolina, and i think it will bring america to a standstill. people watching either on tv or online or in person. we heard in a build up,

traffic has been terrible. a lot of these sites are remote, very rural. what have you experienced? it's going to be really, really bad tomorrow, that's what the authorities are saying everywhere. a few examples, in st louis, one of the biggest cities on the line of totality, they are expecting gridlock and taking special precautions to try and make sure that ambulances can get through. they are basically saying it is going to be awful. here in the rocky mountains, where so many people are going to be converging, it would ordinarily be pretty busy at this time of august, and they are saying, if you don't need to drive on eclipse day, then please don't. and people are allowing many hours to get here, to the line of totality, this narrow band of 70 miles which will sweep across the country. so it could be mayhem, and they are expecting mobile phone
