this is bbc news. i'm duncan golestani. our top stories: texas prepares for potentially catastrophic flooding in the aftermath of hurricane harvey, the biggest storm to hit the us mainland in 13 years. their‘s particular concern about houston, the fourth largest city in the united states which is prone to flooding, and also for a city which flooded badly in 2005 under hurricane katrina. hurricane the king of spain walks alongside half a million people in barcelona's march of defiance against the recent terror attacks. bangladeshi border guards accuse burmese troops of firing at rohingya muslims fleeing the escalating violence in rakhine state. and pulling no punches, floyd mayweather and martial arts star connor macgregor face off ahead of one of the biggest and richest boxing matches ever. hello and welcome to bbc news.

it will take years to recover from hurricane harvey. that's the message from america's head of disaster relief. and the governor of texas says dramatic flooding is his primary concern. this is houston, which has already received as much as 50 centimetres of rain. thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes, despite harvey weakening to a tropical storm. rockport town, where it made landfall, is the worst hit. one person is known to have died there — so far the only known fatality from the storm. our correspondent james cook is in the city of corpus christi. are you in there? this is what a category four

hurricane means in reality. searching in the wreckage to find out if your neighbour is dead or alive. it seems that dan got out in time, luckily. he was not the only one who had a narrow escape. many texans took to the road at the last minute as the power of the storm became clear. others like judy had nowhere else to go. i just went to bed, because i was like, i've got to ride out the storm. did you get any sleep? no, i stayed in my shaking bed, waiting for the roof to come off. and then later quietened down and there was a tree in my yard and becky's house is completely gone. the power of the wind is plain where harvey made landfall. on the shore front of rockport, in the eye of the storm, these men who live in their boats are lucky to be alive.

were you in your boat last night? yes, he was, too. how was that? no brains! the power of the hurricane is all too clear when you look at these homes. this is a really poor neighbourhood and a lot of people say they do not know how they will rebuild their lives. this is what they endured through the night. 130 mph winds which left nearly 250,000 homes and businesses without power. it is still too early for a comprehensive assessment of the damage, but it will be costly. the danger is not over yet. the storm is inching inland, bringing huge amounts of rain. our primary concern remains dramatic flooding. the state and various agencies remain very active in the search and rescue process, and that will be

one of the foremost tasks that we undertake in the coming days. the flooding has begun and the information is that it will get a lot worse. this disaster is still unfolding. welljames spoke to us a little earlier about the clean—up and rescue efforts taking place across texas. the rainfall is really intensifying in many parts of texas now. we are hearing reports that some people are not able to drive because the rainfall is so heavy because they cannot see anything that is happening in front of them. that is the big problem that will be coming infor the big problem that will be coming in for the stake in the next few days. flooding is already happening in some areas. at the same time, authorities here are having to deal with the immediate impact of the wind damage from the hurricane itself. that has been pretty bad in some areas, notably in rockport, where the ire of the hurricane made

landfall. many houses were badly damaged. the officials and soldiers have been drafted in, neighbours and friends are going door to door, checking to see if anybody has survived or is still inside properties like this one. the people in here are fine, but in other properties, they are still checking. we will have more on that in just a few minutes. thousands of people have marched through barcelona to demonstrate their defiance after the recent attacks that left 15 people dead. they marched behind a banner bearing the slogan — "i'm not afraid". king felipejoined the procession, alongside prime minister mariano rajoy, but it was emergency workers who took pride of place. the bbc‘s tom burridge sent this report from barcelona. this was barcelona's response to terror on its streets. tonight, halfa million,

one of their sisters gave this emotional address. translation: we must work together so this never happens again. at the barcelona march, plenty of pro—independence flags. the politics here is very divided, but today was about being united. let's take a look at some of the other stories making the news. hundreds of migrants evicted last week from the building they'd been occupying for four years have marched through rome to demand a place to stay. the migrants — mainly from eritrea — walked behind a banner that said they were refugees, not terrorists. police used water cannon last thursday to clear them from the square they'd been camping in since their eviction. here in the uk, counter—terrorism police are questioning a man

who they say deliberately drove his car at officers outside buckingham palace. three officers suffered minor injuries as they struggled with the man as he reached for a sword. scotland yard says the man shouted "allahu akbar. " women married to french soldiers have protested in paris against poor living conditions in the army. they say their husbands are forced to live in damp hangars infested with cockroaches and lice. thousands of soldiers were deployed on anti—terror duties following recent islamist attacks in france. border guards in bangladesh have accused burmese troops of opening fire on rohingya muslims trying to flee rakhine state. the number of rohingya's making the border crossing has increased — as violence flared again in the region to the worst it's been in months. witnesses have described watching villagers run for cover when the firing started. anbarasan ethirajan reports. an idyllic landscape on the

bangladesh— myanmar border. british state is behind the barbed fence. —— rakhine state. suddenly, this happens. gunshots continued for several minute. these bangladeshi border guards get edgy. they are prepared. they know what will follow after the firing. hundreds of villagers from myanmar‘s rakhine state are trying to flee the violence there. what you can see on the other side of the border, there are huge failing is going on. you can see a lot of rohingya people coming down over the hills. you can see that right next to the line. on the other side, it looks like something wrong is taking place there. they are rushing in numbers.

these are the pictures from inside rakhine state. people are fleeing to safety. the myanmar government says the fighting broke out after hundreds of rohingya militants attacked police and army bases. the violence is leading to a fresh influx of refugees into wrangler dash. these refugees are hiding on a sandbank so that border guards won't detect them. bangladesh has been turning away refugees for days, saying they cannot post any more. the country is already home to hundreds of thousands of rohingya muslim refugees. they are living in camps in squalid conditions. one of my sons was lost while crossing the border. he could not tolerate the torture of the myanmar government. they killed our people, bodies are lying everywhere. we were helpless. the government burnt out houses and also killed our children. how can we leave there? you have seen on the

news how much torture they are doing to us. the united nations describes rohingya muslims as one of the most persecuted minorities in the world. the latest escalation in violence is only adding to their plight. to their in england, eight people have died and four others have been seriously injured after a serious crash on the m1 motorway near milton keynes. a five—year—old girl with life—threatening injuries is among the injured after a minibus was involved in a crash with two lorries. the lorry drivers have been arrested, one of them on suspicion of drink—driving. ben ando reports crushed almost beyond recognition. the minibus carrying around a dozen people, many believed to be from the same family, was travelling from nottingham towards london. also involved in the accident, two large trucks. images suggest the minibus was crushed between the two huge lorries and broken up into at least two pieces. it happened in the early hours

on the mi motorway southbound carriageway between junction 15 for northampton and junction 14 for milton keynes, and caused huge delays for drivers heading south. fresh marks on the road reveal the desperate attempt to avoid the collision. the six men and two women who were killed were all travelling in the minibus, as were four others who were seriously hurt, one of them a five—year—old girl. all but one have life—threatening injuries. both lorry drivers have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. one is a 53—year—old man from stoke—on—trent, and the other is a 31—year—old man from worcestershire, who is also being held on suspicion of drink—driving. police say some of the victims may not have been from the uk. some of those involved were visiting the uk from india. we're working to keep the families abroad informed. the scene facing officers who attended was complex and the recovery operation was particularly challenging. tragically, eight people

news. our top story: us authorities are continuing to warn of the possible catastrophic impact of hurricane harvey, which hit the coast of texas on saturday. let's stay with that story — the damage caused by hurricane harvey. natalia contreras is a local journalist. she's been describing what the past 2a hours have been like for her. today, this afternoon, another one of my colleagues and i drove out from corpus christi to a place at about 15 minutes away. corpus christi right now is recovering. the city is doing what it can to restore power. you know, restore utilities for people, here. but in areas like rockport, you said earlier, it is raining heavily. the wind is strong.

rylee carlson reports. after six days of fierce battle in the is holdout of tal afar, the iraqi army has raised its flag from the top of the citadel. commanders here say they have cleared 70% of the city from militants, forcing them to leave behind weapons and evidence of how they tried to escape. translation: the resistance of snipers, there are also booby—trapped cars, mortars. they have been defeated. tal afar lies in a strategic position, sitting on a supply route from the former is stronghold of mosul to syria. us and iraqi military say as many as 2000 militants are still in the city. the iraqi army is fighting neighbourhood by neighbourhood to clear the final pockets of resistance. reminders of the terror the group left behind in graffiti, but troops try to erase the symbols where they can. the offensive here follows weeks of coalition air strikes. while visiting soldiers in the area, the iraqi defence ministry

sticks and other weapons. we understand there are layers of security to protect the central core of the compound. the compound is a well organised that they use this virtual currency, this token, as a means of exchange inside be compound. what we have got at the moment is the army that you see here, containing the people within the compound. they want to stop the people getting out and causing the sort of trouble we saw yesterday. obviously, there is a lot of tension. the guru is go to be sentenced on monday. and they don't wa nt sentenced on monday. and they don't want any more violence. they want to know where they are make sure they are not causing any more trouble. what you are seeing is effectively a great show of strength of the indian army, here in this town in northern india. in the philippines, hundreds of people have been to the funeral of a teenager who died after being arrested during an anti—drugs operation. officials say kian de los santos was involved in the drugs trade, and died while resisting arrest.

but video evidence seems to show him being dragged away by plain clothes police officers — and his supporters are demanding an inquiry. our philippines correspondent howard johnson reports. tears and grieving. raw emotions on display at the funeral of kian loyd delos sa ntos. around 1,000 people packed the small church in the north of manila close to where the high school student grew up. hundreds of others lined the streets on the approach to the church, some holding placards denouncing the president's war on drugs. 17—year—old kian was killed in a police raid last week during an upsurge in anti—drug operations. the official police report at the time of the killing said delos santos resisted arrest with a gun. but this was later contradicted by
