she lost six of nine tie—break points when her match resumed against world number 42 katerina siniakova, but survived a third set to go through. 2004 champion svetlana kuznetsova won her opening match playing on the grandstand court. the russian needed three sets to move through against a tough opponent in marketa vondrousova of the czech republic. in the men's draw, austria's dominic thiem finished his match held over from tuesday. the sixth seed resumed 1—0 up in the third set on wednesday against australian wildcard alex de minaur and took less than half an hour to complete his 6—4, 6—1, 6—1win. the 23—year—old has never made it past the fourth round at flushing meadows. bulgarian grigor dimitrov is also through to the second round with a 6—1, 6—4, 6—2 win over czech qualifier vatslav safranek.

the 26—year—old seventh seed, who won the cincinnati title earlier this month without dropping a set, advanced in an hour and 48 minutes. nick kyrgios struggled with injury and his frustration was apparent as he went down to fellow australian john millman in his opening round match. the 22—year—old kyrgios has failed to get past the second round at any of the four grand slams in 2017. i'm having a shocking year. 0bviously i'm having a shocking year. obviously in the scheme of things, you know, iam not obviously in the scheme of things, you know, i am not having the greatest year, as i should have done. the last three months for me has been a nightmare, really. i said before, i had such a good indie miami, then things have gone downhill since then really. the most powerful man in tennis claims there are concerns over players health and says there needs to be "robust conversations" about the busy schedule on the men's tour. david haggerty, the president of the international tennis federation is worried following the withdrawal

of five high—ranked players at the us open, including three former champions. he's also been talking to our tennis correspondent russell fuller. tennis is such a physical sport. i think it has changed over the years. and the one thing that we know is we wa nt and the one thing that we know is we want what is best for the players and spectators as well. and tennis understands this. and i think together as a group we have meetings next week, the seven stakeholders. the itf thinks it is very important and the other stakeholders that we produce the best events that we can and have the players there. the season and have the players there. the seasonis and have the players there. the season is a long season. players that play well and go long into a tournament play more matches. so there are always going to be challenges. i think as an industry together as tennis we can work together. you see on the women's side they have a shorter season. that might be something that needs to be looked at. i think that there are ways that we can combine events.

you know, the way that players play, the size of the drawers is something to be looked at. bangladesh recorded a first ever test match win over australia on wednesday. the tigers won by 20 runs, inspired by shakib al hasan, who finished the match in dhaka with ten wickets. the tourists resumed day four on 109—2. david warner completed his 19th test century and his first on the sub—continent, but he received little support as australia suffered their 12th defeat in their last 14 tests in asia, while bangladesh made it a first win in six tests over their opponents. at home we believe that we can beat any side, and we have that confidence, and everyone that came to the place said the same thing, that we can beat teams, it doesn't matter who we are playing against. and that is exactly what we did. you know, the lead came from our previous performance, the way we have been playing in the last two or three years. not many have been

watching us. but at the same time, you know, we are quietly doing our jobs. they have certainly come a long way over the last couple of years. i think they are a dangerous side, especially here at home, as you have seen. they beat us, they beat england not long ago, so they are 18 confident in these conditions. they have got some good players. i thought miqbal looked good at the top of the order, chance to his arm and played some good, aggressive cricket. shaqib played well in the first innings and bowled well in both innings as well, so the experienced players really stood up in this game for them. and, yeah, i thought they played very well. the former west indies captain, chris gayle, has told the bbc that he wants to return to test cricket. gayle is already back in the one day side that will play five matches against england next month. he told former england captain michael vaughan that he has an understanding that he will say when he wants to return to the test team, having concentrated on the t20

(inaudible). liverpool have agreed a $52 million dollar deal to sign arsenal and england midfielder alex 0xlade—chamberlain. the 24—year—old rejected a move to chelsea on tuesday after a fee had been agreed with the blues. it's understood he's been offered a five year deal worth $155,000 per week. 0xlade—chamberlain has started each of the gunner's four games so far this season despite telling manager arsene wenger he wouldn't sign a new contract. unlike 0xlade—chamberlain, some players across europe have refused to play for their clubs

as they agitate for moves elsewhere. the transfer window closes across much of europe on thursday night, around three weeks into the season. speaking at a meeting of the uefa elite coaches forum, former manchester united manager sir alex ferguson said the forum proposed that in the future the window close before the start of the leagues. the recommendation we look at is to close the window before the season starts, so everyone knows what players they've got and don't wait to see what their first results are going to be like. and also, when they do, they can make other club sport, who maybe start the season not so good either. so it would be a goodidea not so good either. so it would be a good idea to shorten the window and give everyone the same opportunity to sign their players before the season to sign their players before the season starts. colombia's miguel angel lopez overpowered leader chris froome to take stage 11 of the vuelta espana. the astana rider burst away

from a breakaway group with two kilometres remaining. the briton, froome, was 1a seconds behind with vincenzo nibali coming in third. so the italian moves to second in the overall standings, while froome, who's attempting to become the first rider since 1978 to do the tour de france—vuelta double in the same year, has now increased his stranglehold on the red jersey to one minute and 19 seconds. france's world 800m champion pierre—ambroise bosse says he's sustained "multiple facial fractures" in a "violent assault," which has ended his season. the 25—year—old who won gold at the world championships in london earlier this month says he was assaulted by three individuals and police have launched an investigation. he was due to compete in angers on the ninth september. 0ne welsh football fan has had the day of his life getting to meet his idol up close and personal. gareth bale is training ahead of wales's match against austria on saturday, but watch how the real madrid star made time for one of his most devoted fans. go, bale! are you ashlee —— actually

didn't happen. the brewers when, ten out of 15 for them and doing very nicely indeed. but from me and the rest of the sport today team, goodbye. hello there. we're moving into the last day of august, but in some places, yesterday, it felt like september had already arrived. because there was a lot of cloud, there was some rain around, and temperatures across some south—eastern areas only got up to 13 degrees. but further north and west, the day brought brighter skies and some spells of sunshine. just a few showers. and that's the sort of weather that we will take with us into thursday. the cloud has now been chased away to the east. we've got some clear skies following on behind, with just a few shower clouds. and during the day ahead, we are going to see a mixture of sunshine and showers. the showers quite heavy from the word go in western areas. and then extending eastwards

as the day goes on. but with some bright or sunny spells between those downpours. so, let's take a closer look at a:00pm in the afternoon. across the west of england, we'll see quite a few showers in places, with some sunny spells in between. temperatures around 16—17 degrees. some showers stretching across the southeastern into east anglia. but a big improvement in temperatures here. 20 degrees in london, 19 for ipswich. some heavy showers across the midlands, up into north—eastern england. some of the showers could contain the odd rumble of thunder. and for scotland, it is that mixture of spells and showers. 1a degrees in aberdeen, 17 in glasgow. for northern ireland, some decent sunny breaks between the showers. i think some places will avoid the showers and stay dry all day long. and a similar story for wales. sunny spells, the odd downpour coming along, here and there. some of those showers will be heavy, but they will then tend to fade as we go through the evening. through the night, into the early hours of friday, we will see some
1:57 am
fog around, and a chilly night. towns and cities 9—12, but in rural areas, one, two, three, four degrees. quite a cool start if you're out and about early on friday morning. but the prospects of friday are fairly promising. a lot of dry weather and some spells of sunshine. still the chance of a shower, particular to the east, but many will stay dry. 17 in london, about where we'd expect to be. and then we get on into the weekend, and it is not bad news, especially if you like dry weather. this area of high pressure will give us a fine start to the weekend. weather systems, you'll notice, out west, they won't make much progress into eastern parts, so even on sunday, eastern areas of scotland, eastern england, should stay dry, with some spells of sunshine. further west, a fine saturday, a chilly saturday night, but then cloud and rain with some strong winds will work in from the west on sunday. welcome to bbc news, broadcasting to viewers
