6:32 pm
night of football ahead. three home nations in qualifying action — england, scotland and northern ireland, and though none of them can actually book a place at the world cup tonight, some very important steps can be taken towards russia, let's cross live to wembley where it's first against second in group f — a win for england against slovakia will take them to the brink of qualification. our sports correspondent natalie pirks is there for us... england against slovakia, you were in malta on friday, they laboured to that flattering win and gareth southgate knows that slovakia can be tough as well? they really know that they have too. they simply have to improve tonight. i spoke to gareth southgate, i spoke to players after the game and they said it was a professional performance, that was their mantra, but they know that labouring to a win to a side ranked 190 in the world and only beating
6:33 pm
them 4—0 by virtue of three late goals did flatter to deceive them, of course, most of that 11 men essentially behind the ball and made it very difficult to break down and in the end quality did tell. only a couple of bright sparks ready for england. marcus rashford could get a run out tonight but england ultimately have not lost since 2009 in qualifiers. that is 36 games so far but gareth southgate has said that night, records will count for nothing. we will not be getting a resultjust because we are playing at home, or because we are playing at home, or because we are playing at home, or because we have a record of however many years. we have to perform on the day and we have to take care of business. so of course, being at home is an advantage. and our record at wembley is good. as i say, you have to perform and beat the opponent in front of you on any
6:34 pm
given day and we need to get that right. england know that tonight a win would put them five points clear of slovakia with games against slovenia here and the final match against lithuania to come. but, slovakia are a different gravy. they have won their last five qualifiers and are only second, two points behind england. so defeat here tonight could make that group looks very different indeed. slovakia, of course, only the group leaders will go through. the runners—up will have to going into play—off spots. that is something gareth southgate wants to avoid. they needed a 95th minute winnerfrom adam to avoid. they needed a 95th minute winner from adam lallana to win to avoid. they needed a 95th minute winnerfrom adam lallana to win in the first game against them. plenty to play for tonight and of course, a win here could do scotland a of favours as well. it certainly will. we will have a detailed look at the maths right away. perks paire. let's just have a reminder of how
6:35 pm
things stand in group f... england are unbeaten at the top. scotland, a rare evening where they will be hoping for england to do them a favour so they can make up ground, slovenia play lithuania tonight but scotland are facing malta. let's get the latest from hampden park. i'm sure they will have been analysing the maltese. our correspondent is there. good evening. what do we expect from the scots tonight, they should roll over the multiuse that they stifled england for long periods, didn't they? they did, wales will be aware of that, they will have analysed the match but you will remember that scotla nd match but you will remember that scotland one year ago today rolled over molto, there was no room for errorfor over molto, there was no room for
6:36 pm
error for scotland, they had an upturn in their performances and results in recent times. many people looking at this match as a formality but gordon strachan and his players know better than to approach the match in a complacent manner.“ know better than to approach the match in a complacent manner. if you look at malta's performances, over the last year, even england, when scoring four goals in the last couple of minutes, i think fans and most of the press would understand how important this game can be. i'm not talking about patience with keeping the ball, but being patient to find those areas where to play at a high tempo. scotland have certainly given themselves a chance of finishing second and qualifying for the play—off place. they were hoping to make it for games unbeaten tonight i'm going to a double—header against slovakia at home and
6:37 pm
slovenia away. they need england to do them a favour. it should be a fascinating evening. they will not wa nt to fascinating evening. they will not want to waste that brilliant result in lithuania, the scots tonight. if they slip up against malta... one more home nation playing tonight and you can see how pretty northern ireland are sitting in group c. germany are unbeaten and look odds on for the automatic qualification spot...they play norway. northern ireland need just a point against the czech republic to make sure they take that second spot. let's hear from the northern ireland manager now, and surely he will have taken second spot had it been offered at the start of qualification a year ago, they beat san marino 3—0 last week, the point they need won't come easily against the czechs. the players have taken it a level on from france,
6:38 pm
dealt with it when we've had big players missing, played with confidence in the seven games so far... six clean sheets, that played a part. it's nice to go into games knowing the players know how you want them to play. it's nice to know that they can take that the pitch. let's get more on the match now, stephen watson at windsor park for us. a draw tonight against the czech republic, and northern ireland would guarantee themselves second place in the group behind leaders germany. they would edge ever closer to a place in the play—offs. i'm joined by the former northern ireland international sammy clingan, their home record is fabulous, unbeaten in three years here. will that
6:39 pm
continue? card like to think so, their form has been really good lately. they are keeping their clean sheets, only germany put goals past northern ireland and they have been oi'i northern ireland and they have been ona northern ireland and they have been on a fantastic run. six clean sheets out of seven games, what has been the key? it isn't all down to the fans but from the front down to the back and the goalkeeper. michael o'neill is fantastic with the players. every single player knows their job players. every single player knows theirjob inside out is keeping clean sheets means there is a chance of winning games. that when against san marino at the weekend, for the first time ever northern ireland have 14—mac games in a row. what they have done with the site has been truly remarkable. they have gone into the game seven points clear at the czech republic. they have brought momentum from the euros and theircampaigning have brought momentum from the euros and their campaigning this year, they have put themselves in an unbelievable position. they can only
6:40 pm
focus on what is ahead of for them this evening? i don't think they will sit and settle for a draw, they will sit and settle for a draw, they will go into the game approaching it how they do other games. they have the fans behind them at windsor park. the boys will be looking to get a park. the boys will be looking to geta win park. the boys will be looking to get a win but hopefully at least a draw. sammy, thank you. kick-off is injust over one hour's draw. sammy, thank you. kick-off is in just over one hour's time. ware always an amazing atmosphere in belfast. like the there will be live text coverage of that match as well. wales footballers have arrived in moldova ahead of another crucial world cup qualifier. stoke midfielderjoe allen returns after suspension to face the group's bottom side. teenager ben woodburn got the brilliant winner against austria in cardiff at the weekend to put them

four points behind group leaders serbia. but they closed the gap on the republic of ireland who slipped up the republic of ireland who slipped up in georgia in the second play—off spot. tom stafford reports from the moldovan capital. soon, more than 1300 fans will descend on the capital here with renewed hope... with players training at home this morning they are boosted by the return of their midfielderjoe allen and left back neil taylor. they are determined to build momentum heading into the final three qualifiers. while wales remain four points behind group leaders, they are crucially closing the gap on second place. if the republic of ireland fail to beat serbia tomorrow, wales could overta ke serbia tomorrow, wales could overtake them with a win in moldova, the group's weaker side. but wales's last game here should serve as a warning. in 1994 they were expected to win against the relatively new footballing nation that emerged. it

was one of their most infamous away trips. preparation in this corner of europe was far from perfect... we had flies and cockroaches in our room, brown water coming from the tabs. it wasn't ideal. we had our own chefs and brought our own food. the chefs were not allowed in the hotel kitchen to prepare food. we beat moldova 4—0 in the autumn so surely another victory on tuesday night? we would have too. after a bit of momentum as to what happened on saturday against austria, they will know about moldova. there will not be a lack of preparation in this game. wales do not have happy memories here, but in making that 2000 milejourney, as the overwhelming favourites, they know if they win their next three games they can guarantee second in the gi’oup they can guarantee second in the group which could be good enough for a play—off place. as manager chris common predicted, this game is going

until they get those results and i think it will be a tricky year for them, just because other teams will come in and they feel like they've got a chance because it is not white hart lane. where do you see totte n ha m hart lane. where do you see tottenham developing and going? a lot has been made this season about the structure at the club and how it does not compare to other teams like manchester united, what they are paying the players and huge salaries there, is that an issue if they have ambitions of winning the league? daniel leavy did a greatjob at the club, daniel leavy did a greatjob at the clu b, tottenha m daniel leavy did a greatjob at the club, tottenham are going into a fabulous new stadium, it's a club which is an. arsenal are in a difficult patch at the moment. if you are a fan of spurs, it's time to get excited. as soon as you get in that stadium, those revenues you gain from match day, the commercial revenues, you put those into the tea m revenues, you put those into the team and the great thing is that you've got this academy producing
