chaotic scenes throughout the day led to arsenal's first europa league match against cologne being delayed for an hour tonight. we'll show you the action in a moment. but first, what led up to it. as many as 20,000 german fans had descended on london for what was their first european match for 25 years. they were led by police through the city centre, with reports of bottles being thrown. only 3000 had tickets. and so the situation outside the stadium became ever more difficult, with those extra cologne supporters either trying to get in or stopping others doing so. inside, it was clear many had managed to buy tickets from touts, with arsenal fans getting in touch with the bbc to say they were surrounded by german supporters, with others climbing over barriers to join those in the away end. our reporter dan johnson was outside in the minutes leading up to kick—off.

well, this game between arsenal and cologne was due to kick off at 8:05pm. but it has been delayed by the police, they say, because of safety concerns. we have had a statement from the metropolitan police saying that they have offices here dealing with disorder at the stadium. we haven't seen anybody causing problems, but there are certainly thousands of fans outside the ground, and it looks like the sheer numbers of people have just been too much. that's why kick—off has been delayed for an hour. there are lines of police here, they have been holding back for a certain amount of time. we have seen groups of cologne fans through the streets around the stadium in north london. very noisy, very boisterous, they made their way up oxford street earlier causing traffic problems. we understand there are thousands of people already in the stadium. we can't see what is going on in there, but certainly there is a lot of
