time now for all the sports news in sport today. hello, this is sport today, live from the bbc sport centre. coming up on this programme. former england captain wayne rooney is banned after admitting to drink—driving giro d'italia organisers announce details of next year's historic start injerusalem and as afghanistan's cricket side rise up the world rankings we take a look at how a home grown t20 tournament is getting attention from all over the world. hello and welcome to the programme where we start with the news that the former england and manchester united captain, wayne rooney, has pleaded guilty to drink driving. the 31—year—old who now plays for everton has been banned from driving for two years and ordered to do community service. it's after he was arrested near his home in the north—west of england earlier this month and our sports editor dan roan was at the court hearing.

less than 2a hours after playing for his club, everton, wayne rooney arriving at the magistrates this morning over a drink—driving charge. flanked by police and security guards and the former england captain was escorted through a media scrum and accompanied by his agent. he was arrested in the early hours of september1 after being stopped by police, driving a car belonging to a woman he had met on a night out and who he was driving home from above. —— this bar. the court heard the 31—year—old had been three times the legal alcohol limit. wayne rooney spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth, issuing a guilty plea through his solicitor who said his client had genuine remorse for a genuine mistake. the districtjudge handed him a two—year driving ban and ordered him to carry out 100 hours of unpaid community work. he was told to pay £170 in costs. wayne rooney had written a letter to the court exposing his remorse and his solicitor asked he be spared

in a country with its recent chaotic history as afghanistan, cricket has remained and wafers of calm. despite the disruption to a match in kabul last week because of the bomb blast close to the stadium, this cricket league has proven a crowd favourite and now into its fifth year, afg hanistan‘s very own and now into its fifth year, afghanistan's very own t20 mac competition is starting to attract international talent. it has been excellent, the crowd support and security has been tremendous. we hope that it can only get better. and not just hope that it can only get better. and notjust on the field of play, former zimbabwe captain is amongst those behind the microphone as the afg ha n those behind the microphone as the afghan cricket board seeks to improve its media profile. all in all, afghan cricket is on the rise. this is something immense and we can

essentially, a dry fine start, a chilly start and there will be some mist and fog around. some dense in places, central southern areas across the midlands into cheshire. eventually that will lift during the morning and potentially into some low cloud before breaking up. you can see plenty of sunshine on the map there for northern england into scotland. for northern ireland, however, clouds will thicken up, particularly across the west but there could be early brightness across belfast. the cloud is thickening here because of the weather front making inroads off the atlantic. elsewhere you will see a little cloud bubbling up through the day. there could be an isolated shower but most places will be dry. light wind as well, despite the chilly start it should get pleasantly warm into the afternoon. high teens across southern and eastern areas. still some strength in the sunshine. towards wednesday, the weather front makes inroads off the atlantic. we lose our ridge of high pressure.

but it will be bringing air from the south, south—west. that is always a mild directions, so temperatures will be on the rise. in fact, the eastern half of the country does not look too bad. through the day we will hold onto sunny spells and will feel quite warm. further west it goes downhill, windy with outbreaks of rain, quite heavy in parts of western scotland and northern ireland. 18 or 19 degrees again across the east and the south—east. on thursday it looks even wetter. this weather front has some heavy rain on it, particularly for the south—west of england towards wales, southwest scotland. could be concerned about rainfall amounts building up there by the time thursday is out. the south—east expecting similar sunshine and it will stay warm. let's zoom out and head across the atlantic in towards the caribbean because, of course, the next major hurricane in making inroads in towards the leeward islands. hurricane maria is a category four force storm, ploughing through some of the islands as it works its way west north—west. could be some heavy rain and flooding and coastal surge. welcome to bbc news, broadcasting to viewers in north america and around the globe. my name is mike embley,
