this is bbc news. the headlines: the deadliest mass shooting in recent us history — at least 50 people are dead and more than 400 wounded in las vegas. president trump describes it as an act of pure evil. hundreds of our fellow citizens are now mourning the sudden loss of a loved one. a parent, a child, a brother, or sister. police named the gunman as 64—year—old stephen paddock who was from nevada. he fired from his room on the 32nd floor overlooking the open—air event which is where he was found dead when police entered. all of a sudden we heard pop pop pop pop pop countless times and we all thought it was firecrackers, and it kept on going, then he fired for a bit and fired another 15—20 rounds and that's when we realised it was a fully automatic — sounded like a high powered rifle. also this hour, the uk's biggest airline, monarch, has collapsed,

leaving thousands of customers stranded abroad and future flights cancelled. the company has begun laying off staff at its luton headquarters. the chancellor says there needs to be unity and focus on brexit so that the uk can secure a deal that will be good for jobs and prosperity. violence at the ballot box in spain — the european commission says catalonia's independence referendum was not legal and calls on both sides to talk. good afternoon and welcome to bbc news. at least 50 people have died and more than 400 have been wounded, after a gunman opened fire at country music festival in las vegas. it's the deadliest gun attack in recent us history. police say the suspect — is a 64—year—old local man who has been named as stephen paddock. in the last few minutes president

trump describes it as an act of pure evil. police say he was a 64—year—old local man. police stormed his hotel room where ten guns were found. he fired from the 32nd floor of the mandalay hotel on the city's sunset strip. there is video footage showing people down on the floor. people were forced to shelter in hotels, restaurants, and mccarran international airport which had halted all flights. here is richard galpin with all of the details. the music had only just got underway. and for a few seconds, no one reacts to the burst of automatic gunfire. but then the band and thousands of fans try to take cover as more
4:03 pm
high velocity bullets slammed into the air. —— high velocity bullets slammed into the area. but there is no cover here in this large open area. the only way to reach safety is to run. as people tried to escape the gunman opens fire again. he seems to have a large supply of ammunition. this couple had been right next to the stage. we just hit the ground. we laid there and hung onto each other. it was quiet for a bit and then he fired another 30 rounds and then quiet. what we were doing was every time he had stopped and reloaded, we got up and started to make our way towards the fence. then he would shoot again and we would hit the ground. i must have heard him do
4:04 pm
that at least 15 times. this is a real situation. people staying in nearby hotels were told to take shelter. we were down in the gym basement. this group had been at a party, having to hide in the basement gym. the attack took place just after ten o'clock last night. it was right in the heart of las vegas, in the famous strip of hotels, casinos and concert venues. the gunman was in the mandalay bay hotel on the 32nd floor, firing down onto the music festival across the road below. hundreds of ambulances and police vehicles soon swamped the area. before they arrived, local people, including hotel workers, had been helping the injured. me and my co—workers started to see lots of people jumping the fences, who were shot in the chest, arms. some were shot in the thighs.
4:05 pm
a lot of people were shot coming onto our property. people were hysterical. specialist firearms officers moved in once they knew where the gunman was firing from. they broke into his hotel room but say he had already killed himself. the man, who lived in nevada, and has been named as 64—year—old stephen paddock, was killed. he had on board record. his motive remains unclear. —— he had ten guns with him and no police record. we are comfortable that the primary aggressor in this event has expired, or passed away, and is no longer a threat. there have been multiple phone calls and accusations, or conjecture, coming through social media that there are multiple shooters at other resorts. that has proven to be false. additionally, there have been accusations or beliefs there are explosives going off.
4:06 pm
that is also false. the police now believe they have also located this woman, 62—year—old marilou danley, whom been described as the companion of the gunman, was not involved. with at least 50 people known to have been killed and 200 injured, —— with at least 50 people known to have been killed and 400 taken to hospital this has been the deadliest mass shooting in us history. donald trump has made a statement on the attack describing it as pure evil. my evil. my fellow americans, we are joined together today in sadness, shock, and grief. last night a gunman opened fire on a large crowd at a country music concert in las vegas, nevada. he brutally murdered more than 50 people and wounded hundreds
4:07 pm
more. it was an act of pure evil. the fbi and the department of homeland security are working closely with local authorities to assist with the investigation and they will provide updates as to the investigation and how it develops. i wa nt to investigation and how it develops. i want to thank the las vegas metropolitan police department, and all of the first responders for their courageous efforts and for helping to save the lives of so many. the speed with which they acted is miraculous, and prevented further loss of life. to have found the shooter so quickly after the first shots were fired is something for which we will always be thankful and grateful. it shows what true
4:08 pm
professionalism is all about. donald trump there. let's have a look at what we know so far about the suspected gunman. stephen paddock was 64 years of age. he was from mesquite, a small city in clark county, which is about 80 miles northeast of las vegas. 0fficials do not yet know how long he had been living in the area. the police say he had no previous "derogatory" interactions with police, except for one citation several years ago. at least ten rifles were found in his hotel room in mandalay bay which he had been staying in since thursday paddock apparently killed himself as police stormed his room on the 32nd floor. eric paddock, the brother of stephen paddock, has been speaking to cbs. he has no police record. he doesn't even have parking tickets, probably. how did you hear? we got phone calls. we have talked to the police
4:09 pm
department. it is like you have called me up and said my next door neighbour did that, and i am, like, i've only ever seen him mow his lawn. the fact my brother did this, there is no... there is nothing. i mean, there is absolutely no... we don't understand. inaudible if you could, once again, your message to the people's families... there isn't even anything can say. how do you... i mean, my brother did this, i, this is like this was done, like, he shot us... if he had killed my kids i couldn't be more
4:10 pm
dumbfounded... it doesn't. .. my kids i couldn't be more dumbfounded... it doesn't... there's nothing. last communication... nothing, i can show you the text, it says, how is mum? did you get power? that was it... we have absolutely nothing for you, like i said. i mean, i hope... someone figures out... because we would like to know. were you a close family? the police are inside checking on your mum. i live here, he lives there... 0nce mum. i live here, he lives there... once again, public record stuff you will find out. we aren't that close. we talk on the phone occasionally. he calls my mum and talks to her. there is no... no mental health issues? nothing we know of.
4:11 pm
chuckles imean, he chuckles i mean, he was... was he an avid shooter? not at all. the fact he had those kind of weapons is... just... where the hell did he get automatic weapons? he has no military background, or anything like that. when you find out about it, like a sitcom he is a guy who lived in a house in mesquite, and he went to las vegas, he did stuff. ——, like, he isa las vegas, he did stuff. ——, like, he is a guy who lived in a house in mesquite. was the woman they found his girlfriend? yes. we were worried he might have hurt her. police said that she was his wife. they might have got married, ijust knew her as
4:12 pm
his girlfriend. what do you know about her? nice lady, i have met her about her? nice lady, i have met her a couple of times, she has a facebook page, she has sent goodies to my mum —— she has sent cookies to my mum. does he have children? no. there is nothing. you know? you must be feeling pretty helpless. we are shocked. you think it's a... all five of my friends in the house, they all met up at the same time, i just thought it was one of my friends joking. just thought it was one of my friendsjoking. —— just thought it was one of my friends joking. —— lit just thought it was one of my friendsjoking. —— lit up just thought it was one of my friends joking. —— lit up at the same time. when you get a phone call saying that your brother, you know, just killed a bunch of people... this is not... so... what are you going to do now? we hope that you
4:13 pm
people will stay on the sidewalk. we are answering the phone, talking to random people, but we have told them that we will put out a five line statement which says what i have just told you... but... we are shocked, horrified, and completely dumbfounded. a remarkable interview with the brother of stephen paddock, talking outside his home in orlando, florida. barbara joins me from washington. that sense of the world and an shock, clear on his face, but it is shared by the whole country right now. yes, trying to figure out why this man, a 64—year—old man, who was retired, who, according to his brother was living an ordinary life, he liked to go to las vegas. he liked country music. he would go to concert in las vegas. his brother said he had handguns but where on earth did he get these military type assault weapons? he didn't have any
4:14 pm
military training. we are hearing this from family members and police. there just seems to be nothing this from family members and police. therejust seems to be nothing in his past which indicates that he would act like this. it's a shock in terms of the motive. but also in terms of the motive. but also in terms of the scale of the attack. more than 50 people dead. more than 400 in hospital. the scenes of the gunfire coming from a high vantage point, the 32nd floor of a hotel on an open—air concert where you had no place to duck for safety, that's also pretty raw emotional stuff to watch. absolutely. just listening to the brother. it was like talking to your next—door neighbour. he said this has come so out of the blue. clearly from his demeanour he is still dealing with the information. in terms of the police investigation, do we have any idea where they are headed with this? there seems to be no explanation for
4:15 pm
this. you heard a similar, not the world and maybe, but lack of information from the police. they said they believed he acted alone. they said they did not think he was linked to a terrorist organisation. they didn't know anything about his value they didn't know anything about his va lu e syste m they didn't know anything about his value system or political beliefs in a sense that it might cause him to carry out an attack. you have had a lot of mass shootings in the country. some of the motives for the violence, one would be islamist extremist attacks against countries that have participated in the coalition against the islamic state. his brother said he did not have any religious or political affiliation. you had white supremacists, nationalists carrying out attacks. 0n the face of it, this could not have been about race, because you are talking about a white elderly man opening fire on a country music concert, which is dominated by white people, frankly. you have your

alienated teenagers at schools. people who have fallen on the fringes of society or their social group. from the way his brother described him, he seemed like a regular guy. but it does seem like he planned it. he checked in on the 20th of september. he sat in the room for a few days with powerful rifles. not just a room for a few days with powerful rifles. notjust a handgun. room for a few days with powerful rifles. notjusta handgun. many questions to answer. one is reminded of the interview with barack 0bama, when he was asked what his biggest regret was, and he said it was not being able to get a grip on gun control in the us. donald trump will face difficult questions. because every time we have an incident like this the same question comes up, what is america doing about guns?” what is america doing about guns?|j don't what is america doing about guns?” don't think he will face political pressure in a way that would influence him. the republican dominated congress has never been
4:17 pm
willing to pursue legislation on gun control. and it is unlikely it would happen now. president trump has presented himself as a champion of the gun industry. you will hear a lot from democrats who have become more vocal over the past years about the need to do something. you have democratic senators tweeting things like how many lives must be lost before we act? my colleagues are so afraid of the gun industry. you can probably hear a lot from them. but in terms of actual movement on policy at a national level it seems unlikely. president trump did not mention guns or gun control in his speech. but neither did he speak about potential motives of the attacker. in the past he has been quick to say that this is terrorism, he didn't say anything like that. very much focused on the victims of the attack. he used a lot of
4:18 pm
religious imagery. he doesn't normally. he used language that would probably resonate with many americans. he also called for unity in the country. thanks very much. live to las vegas where the police are giving an update. most of the information you can get you can probably get from their office. was there anything remarkable when the officers first approached? it is a new home. a subdivision. nice, clean home, nothing out of the ordinary. we understand a search warrant was served at the house, could you tell us served at the house, could you tell us what was found, was anybody inside? nobody was inside the home. we re inside? nobody was inside the home. were any weapons found?” inside? nobody was inside the home. were any weapons found? i believe some weapons were found, and maybe some weapons were found, and maybe some ammunition. as far as what type of how many, i can't give that information out because i don't know it. that would have to come out of the las vegas metropolitan police department. are we talking about a numberof department. are we talking about a number of weapons?” department. are we talking about a number of weapons? i don't know. can
4:19 pm
you talk about evacuating the neighbours around his home. prior to getting the search warrant, we had the homes adjacent to his home evacuated because we didn't know what was inside the home. we cleared the area around it. have the residents been allowed back in?” don't know. would you describe the neighbourhood? is it a street corner. . . neighbourhood? is it a street corner. .. it is neighbourhood? is it a street corner... it is a retirement community area. 55 and older. it's a newer part of the community. all of the homes are fairly new. it's quiet. it is a cul—de—sac. just a regular neighbourhood. how many homes are on the cul—de—sac? regular neighbourhood. how many homes are on the cul-de-sac? four, maybe five. can you characterise any of the contact he had with his companion —— cani characterise any
4:20 pm
of the contact he had with the police? we haven't had any history ofa police? we haven't had any history of a record with him. to have nothing and then this, how do you reconcile all of that as a police officer? we don't know how long they have lived here. that is being investigated but it is unique. how many people lived in the home? we are not sure if it was just those two or more. a man and a woman? yes. has the woman being located? he would have to contact the las vegas metropolitan police department because i don't know.” metropolitan police department because i don't know. i have the neighbours had any reaction? nothing out of the ordinary. we would react the same way. did they remain in the homes while you were executing the warrants? they left their homes. a lot of residents here seem confused. look at where we are. it's a very quiet neighbourhood. low crime area.
4:21 pm
beautiful and clean neighbourhood to live in, so it is a unique situation. inaudible did they have any children?” inaudible did they have any children? i am not aware. where they married? i'm not aware. where they married? i'm not aware. how long have they lived here? i don't know. and the woman was the person of interest, or the person that was named by las vegas? the female that was named by las vegas shows that she lived here, as well. what do you have to say to conserved residents? don't be concerned. everybody is safe. there is no active threat at this time. —— what do you have to say to concerned resident? whether weapons in one place, or spread around the house?” don't know. this is an area which is co nsta ntly don't know. this is an area which is constantly growing. there is always active construction going on. what
4:22 pm
percentage of mesquite is 55 plus? good question. i could guess but i don't know. maybe a quarter?m good question. i could guess but i don't know. maybe a quarter? is it a single—family home? don't know. maybe a quarter? is it a single-family home? yes. and there are immediate neighbours around it? yes. i have a couple of pictures of the home. 0nce yes. i have a couple of pictures of the home. once we are done, you give me your business cards, i will get you those pictures. inaudible just a regular home, it looks like it was lived in. have you spoken to the neighbours about their interactions with them? that is being done. are you getting any calls about the suspect from neighbours who may have known him? as far as neighbours who may have known him? as faras in neighbours who may have known him? as far as in the past? no, apparently. no. was there a search warrant? yes. thank you very much. thank you. that is the police
4:23 pm
spokesperson for the mesquite police department. it has to be said, the more that we know about the gunman the more mysterious disappearance. his brother has spoken in the last hour. there was no inkling and clearly he was shocked at the events of the past few hours. the neighbourhood is a regular neighbourhood. the gunman, stephen paddock, lived in a retirement community area. nothing out of the ordinary. we keep hearing that, nothing out of the ordinary. and yet we are talking about a man who has in the last 12 hours kills at least 50 people, injured more than 400, after shooting from the 32nd floor ofa after shooting from the 32nd floor of a las vegas strip hotel. we will be bringing you more reaction to that. that was the police reaction in mesquite. the main enquiry is underway to las vegas. donald trump
4:24 pm
in the last hour has spoken to the governor of nevada, the mayor of las vegas, and the local sheriff. he will be going to las vegas on wednesday. still mysteries to the motive of this attack. monique and paul dumas were at the concert, at the front of the crowd, when the gunman started firing. they told our colleague at cbs news, john blackstone, what they saw and heard. we were at centre stage. at the front. dancing. having a good time. jason was playing. all of a sudden we heard pop p0p p0p p0p p0p p0p p0p several times. we thought it was firecrackers. then he fired about 15, 20 rounds, and that is when we realised that it may have been an automatic rifle. we hite the ground. we just hung onto each other. then it was quiet for a bit. then another 30 rounds. then it was quiet. every time he stopped, he was reloading, so we got up and
4:25 pm
started making our way towards the fence. he'd start shooting again, so we would hit the ground. i must have heard him do it at least 15 times. what were you thinking when you are lying there and all of these shots are going off again and again? you are not thinking it is happening. at the same time you are thinking i need to run for my life. but i had to hang onto my husband. and my sister. and my brother—in—law. we don't need to panic, we just need to get safe, we need to get away from this. all of you were there, lying down? yes. did you see anybody get hit? no, but behind the stage there were people calling for a medic and security. i think somebody had been hit on the right—hand side of the stage. as we were leaving to the left, we were going through the cars in the parking lot, and people were laying on the ground with people on top of them. so we knew there were half a dozen we had seen. you got out of the venue
4:26 pm
and they directed you into the mandalay bay hotel? fences were getting kicked down because we were trapped. people were kicking on the fences, climbing over the top of them. we made it. we were directed into the mandalay bay. as we were coming through the mandalay bay we didn't know that but apparently at the time he was shooting in the rooms. we made it out of mandalay bay. we walked away here. you came a long way down the strip from this. oh, yeah. you said it seemed like 15 times he reloaded with multiple... easily, with at least 30 rounds he was firing. it was about four, five minutes of gunshots. my sister also has video. there are five minutes of us running and hearing gunshots, crouching, hiding behind cars, trying to get as far away as possible. when the shooting would stop you would run, and as soon as you heard bullets again you would hit the dirt? we weren't really running,
4:27 pm
we were all calm, but some people people were trying to run and we stopped them. because things were bottling up. we calmly kept going. then we were out. once we got onto the streets we started to run. you are saying as people were exiting with all of these bullets going people were calm? yes. it was remarkable. click everyone was getting out as fast as they could. but they were saying, stay calm, don't push, don't panic, don't trample, it was strange to see that, that everybody was still looking out for everyone at the same time as trying to escape. more people could have got hurtjust getting out of there.
4:28 pm
yeah. absolutely. what relief was it when you finally got out and well away? it hasn't hit me yet. i didn't really find relief. i was still nervous coming all the way from there to here. we didn't know if they had found him, caught him, we don't know if he is out there coming for us. it was nerve—racking coming over here. do you think it was just one shooter, given all of the reloading? it sounded like that. it was constant pop pop p°p p°p p°p p°p p0p- it did not sound like two guns shooting. then it went quite for ten, 15 seconds, then pop pop p0p p0p p0p p0p pop again. on. in the las vegas. —— and show you the scene from las vegas. they are doing sound techs at the —— they were doing sound checks at the moment. people are asking why.
4:29 pm
we have heard from his brother, eric paddock, expressing total shock and disbelief about what he had been told about his own brother and what he has carried out. he had no history of military background, had no guns, was living quietly in a retirement house in mesquite. he had contacted his brother over the last few days just ask how their mother was and how they had recovered from the hurricane damage because they live in orlando, florida. it's an extraordinary interview. we will show you that in the next hour. but we will bring you reaction from donald trump when we get it. we will return to events in las vegas as soon as that news conference gets under way. the prime minister has

4:39 pm
with the suspect and we are in the recovery phase of that. the mandalay bay itself has gone back to service, minus the 32nd floor and they would like everybody advice problem with sound to return to the hotel. now, the location in question, the concert hall, we will be in a long process of body recovery out there and evidence recovery. and evidence documentation. so, you're going to have to ask the public‘s patience as we bring information forward. it's a long, laborious process to identify the victims and reunite them with the victims and reunite them with the family members to advice them of their situation. so, we still have their situation. so, we still have the families responding to the las vegas metropolitan police headquarters in order to conduct a

reunification of their family or friends. eventually, in the next few hours, actually, i don't want to give you a skewed timeline, but approximately ipm, we will request the family members to attend the convention centre to utilise a larger space and we will bring in victim advocates to assist with the family members in the long—term. right now, it isjust family members in the long—term. right now, it is just a temporary phase associated with the reunification. additionally, we're asking to solely utilise the united blood service for blood donation and umc as the only places to donate blood. we had some resource issues associated with the medical clinic. i applaud their effort to help us, but we have resource issues associated with that. so better utilise it to ensure that you know

morning. my name is reuben, i community, thank you. s good morning. my name is reuben, lam community, thank you. s good morning. my name is reuben, i am the congress man for knee vad dasmt i wa nt congress man for knee vad dasmt i want to say thank you to law enforcement and to all the first responders who are now fighting tirelessly to protect and save lives. i had the opportunity to stop by sunrise hospital earlier this morning. i saw at first hand a lot of the victims, a lot of the family members, buti of the victims, a lot of the family members, but i saw a lot of nurses and doctors that were working tirelessly to save lives and today isa very tirelessly to save lives and today is a very sad day for nevada. it's a very sad day for las vegas, but if anything good came out of this is that i saw humanity. i saw our community come together. i saw strangers helping strangers and saving lives and so i want to say thank you to the police and the sheriff and firefighters, the doctors, the nurses and everybody who is working tirelessly to save lives at this precise moment, i know
4:43 pm
we're going to get through this and our city will be strongerment thank you so much. —— stronger. thank you so you so much. —— stronger. thank you so much. i'm the district attorney anden behalf of the da's office, our thoughts and prayers go out to everybody associated with this event. but two my of prosecutors, young female prosecutors were actually at this concert, close to the stage, and i have spoken to both of them this morning and they're pretty rattled. they are pretty shaken up. this was a horrific vent to say the least. this is a classic wmd, this is a weapon and a man of mass destruction. what i'm pleased so much about is how this doesn't involve politics in the sense of republican or democrat, we are here, all of us are nevadans and i'm proud
4:44 pm
to be present with the other leaders because we are working together to get through this. i want to thank the sheriff for your leadership in leading us through this terrible, terrible day. thank you. thank you, sheriff. i want to begin by thanking the sheriff. i got down here eight or nine hours ago. it was after this incident, but i can tell that our first responders, the firemen and women and metro were on their way in when this all happened. we have got first responders that are covered in blood as a result of this. there is a lot of victims have not been identified, but they have stepped up. it was a sole shooter. there is no further threat that we are aware of. i want to assure everyone that's listening is our words that las vegas is safe. the men and women of mandalay bay and mgm resorts have been incredible in terms of
4:45 pm
communicating and working with the sheriff's office so that everybody can get into their rooms and they are safe and we are doing everything possible to protect our tourists and citizens. the sheriff and i have set up citizens. the sheriff and i have set upago citizens. the sheriff and i have set up a go fund me account, we have been inundated with people asking what they can do. there will be a lot of family members that are going through an awful lot at this particular time. we have over 500 in our hospitals being treated and we need to provide them with some sort of support. so we have done that and ijust can't of support. so we have done that and i just can't say of support. so we have done that and ijust can't say enough about the fine men and women that are our first responders and all of the cities and jurisdictions that have pulled together. we have pledged a full resources to assist the sheriff and the fbi in anyway way possible, we ask for dwrur prayers. —— your players.
4:46 pm
—— prayers. players. -- prayers. i want players. -- prayers. iwant to players. -- prayers. i want to thank you all the good men and women of this city and mirror what the commissioner had spoken to about the great response of the first responders and law enforcement. i spent part of last night and was late this morning with you all because i was over at umc and the trauma unit and it has been and the trauma unit and it has been a very, very difficult time for us and as we look forward to continuing what our great city does, we offer a safe place, this is a crazed lunatic full of hate. we don't know much about his background, but it certainly is not an extension of what we believe in, what everybody who lives here and works here and those who visit here want to see. this is something that was simply outrageous, uncalled for, and so many innocent people, young people,
4:47 pm
children, parents, who have lost loved ones and so many still suffering in the hospitals, going through major surgery. we have some that were hit quite lightly with shral nel as they were nearer the exits, it has been a hugely traumatic time for all of us and for our visitors, who love country music, many of whom have come from the northern part of our states here, and just really came here for a wonderful safe time. we pride ourselves in our law enforcement. they are unequal. they are so rapid to respond and so thorough in what they do and our first responders have been simply phenomenal. it is a city and a community that has pulled together. everybody is working so ha rd to together. everybody is working so hard to make sure that we are taking ca re of hard to make sure that we are taking care of the needs of the families and those who have lost loved ones and those who have lost loved ones and it's just been a very, very traumatic time for everybody. the

president gave a beautiful message and he will be visiting us either sometime later today, tomorrow, or wednesday. great concern and we just know that the entire community, i have so many mayor that is have called, governors who have called me personally, to express their support, help and what we ask for is blood. that's the main thing right now is that if our people want to do something and they are healthy then please donate blood. we will have plenty of banks available, call a hospital if you are unsure where to go. so thank you very much. and madam congresswoman, i'm sorry, i didn't mean to stand in front of you. well, thank you very much. i represent nevada district one. it includes the fabulous las vegas strip and the mandalay bay where this horrendous act took place. so many times i welcome people to las vegas and all the excitement and
4:49 pm
entertainment and fun it has to offer and i never thought i would be standing here trying to offer solace and my office assistance to victims of something like this that would happen. all through the night we we re happen. all through the night we were briefed about law enforcement. i thank you, sheriff for all you did and the first responders, mainly we we re and the first responders, mainly we were trying to stay out of the way because you don't want to turn a personal tragedy into a political event. today my office will be giving blood as the mayor stayed. they appreciate your thoughts and prayers, but what they need is blood. it will be open to do anything we can to assist, but you know, i have just been hearing all the stories of heroism that occurred in the midst of this tragedy. you had off duty police officers who we re had off duty police officers who were there just for the concert, for an evening of fun who were able to help people get shelter and who were able to identify the location of the
4:50 pm
shooter and just random strangers, a friend of some of my staff members who lives in the district, said they we re who lives in the district, said they were running, being trampled, somebodyjust were running, being trampled, somebody just opened a were running, being trampled, somebodyjust opened a van door and pulled them inside for shelter and safety. that's the kind of people we have here in las vegas who are willing to reach out and help one another. and so, i thank all of our law enforcement. i thank the first responders, those in the hospitals where people are in the halls and the parking lot trying to take care of so many and please call on our offices if there is any way we can be of assistance. i'm nevada's attorney—general. i want to echo. a lot of people said today, i have been here since 2am and the job that metro and our law enforcement and first responders have done is remarkable. we have never been hit with such a tough situation in this
4:51 pm
city and to see the poise and the pressure that they are able to perform under was truly astoweding. i believe that they are always going to be able to get us out of these situations, our law enforcement will be able to step up to the plate when they need them most and of course, they need them most and of course, the city and our state will bounce back. thank you very much. ijust want back. thank you very much. i just want to add one back. thank you very much. ijust want to add one more thing before the governor comes up. i got to ask you to do something else. when you see one of these men and women wearing a badge, or members of our fire department, tell them thank you. they're selfless actions saved the lives of hundreds of people. not a dozen people. hundreds of people. this death count would have been many hundred more where it not for the brave work of every single one of these men and women, our first responders, our police department, i encourage all of you watching, the
4:52 pm
next time you see one, say thank you, i appreciate that. good morning, ladies and gentlemen. i'm governor. i don't know if i have words to describe what we're going through and what these poor unfortunate victims are going through. we're angry. we're grieving. confused. people are hurting. iwant grieving. confused. people are hurting. i want to thank the sheriff and all the first responders. ijust had an opportunity to visit some of the patients in the hospital and it's unimaginable what people are going through right now. you have got family members who are here and don't have anyone to reach out to. but the first responders and what they've done, it is our finest hour. 0ur finest hour. and the way that the sheriff and the metropolitan police department handled this event
4:53 pm
is unprecedented. the paramedics, who came on the scene, and basically what was a war zone. and treated all those men, women and kids. the health care professionals at the hospitals, the doctors who came from all over the valley to do whatever they could. and now, you know, we don't understand what's happened and i'm sure we'll find out a little more from when metro continues to do its investigation. i do know for everybody watching and you know i wa nt everybody watching and you know i want to thank the president of the united states, the governors that have reached out to me, to offer their help and assistance. we need blood. so if anybody can contribute blood. so if anybody can contribute blood and anybody in las vegas area. problem with sound we're going to need... problem with sound
4:54 pm
it is obviously... problem with sound and pray for the families and for the victims. we have to rely on our faith ina the victims. we have to rely on our faith in a time like this goat us through all of it. i'm, i couldn't be prouder of the way that nevadans responded to this and what they have done. doctors and nurses and everyone else who has worked through the night to save lives and they've told me they've saved lives that if not for their organisation and their professionalism and their training. so again, sheriff, thank you. for the courage that you've shown, to the courage that you've shown, to the people that were at the concert. you see courage and compassion there. people helping total strangers. risking their own lives to help people. that really speaks highly to the character of america.
4:55 pm
so again, there is a lot to learn from all of this. it was a cowardly despicable act. i'm very angry about. there is not much we can do, but we can learn. so ladies and gentlemen, thank you for everybody's ca re gentlemen, thank you for everybody's care and concern. studio: we're going to leave the state governor there, echoing the plea from the mayor for blood supplies. they say they are in need of blood, both having spent part of the night in various hospital trauma units and clearly, many of them still in shock as a result of that. the death toll updated and increased to 58. with 515 injured and being treated in hospital. and also hearing there that had it not been for the quick response of the
4:56 pm
sheriff and fire departments, hundreds more, they said, could have been killed in that attack. plenty more to come from las vegas, huw edwards will bring you that in the 5pm, also we will have more on other events including the closure of monarch airlines. that's it from me. it is time for the weather. thank you, simon. good afternoon, everybody. well, it was a windy start to our monday monday, but ed winds have started to ease as the low pressure moves off into scotland navia. this fella will bring a spell of wet weather over the next few hours. we have seen some sharp showers as well through the day, but you can see the cloud increasing in cornwall, the seas getting rougher and the rain has arrived. now, sharper showers to the north—west, but this area of rain that's the issue over the next few hours. nothing particularly significant and it is likely to stay to the south of
4:57 pm
the m4 corridor. easing away probably by around 9pm or 10pm. 0nce it does clear off into the channel, we will continue to see the winds falling light and the skies clear and actually temperatures will fall away. still a scattering of showers up away. still a scattering of showers up into the north—westjust like we have seen today, through the night the temperatures falling away, nine to 11 celsius in towns and city centres, but lower than in rural spots. it could be a chillier start to our tuesday morning. but it should be a dry one and we should see decent sunshine. a scattering of showers up into the north—west, but it will be a quieter day for all of us. by the middle of the afternoon, this is a snapshot at 4pm, temperatures not as warm as they have been, ten to 12 celsius, maybe 13 celsius into northern ireland, but for northern ireland, you have got fewer showers. not too bad a day across england and wales. yes, not
4:58 pm
as warm as it has been in recent days, but hopefully the sunshine will compensate for that. we could see highs up to 17 celsius. that's 64 fahrenheit. as we go through tuesday night and into wednesday, we have got the high pressure across england and wales, but it slips further south and allows the fronts to come across the top of the high. winds squeezing together so the winds picking up and there will be a speu winds picking up and there will be a spell of prolonged showers or longer spells of rain and strengthening winds. by the end of wednesday we could see more significant rain arriving. it could be vigorous area of low pressure. there is a great deal of uncertainty where that's going to be sitting and how heavy the rain is likely to be, but certainly if you're going out to be out on the roads keep watching the weather forecast. thursday will be a brief lull in proceedings, quieter and drier before clouding over on friday. we see more wet and windy weather threatening as we move into the weekend. at least 58 people have been killed
4:59 pm
in the worst mass shooting in modern us history. the gunman opened fire on a crowd attending a music festival in las vegas. more than 500 were injured in the attack. all of a sudden, we heard, pop, pop, p0p: p0p: all of a sudden, we heard, pop, pop, pop, pop, and we all thought it was firecrackers, and then it kept on going. then he fired for a bit, then he fired another 15 or 20 rounds. that's when we realised it was a fully automatic. panic gripped the crowd as people tried to flee while the gunman fired from his room on the 32nd floor of a nearby hotel. the gunman has named as 64—year—old stephen paddock,
