impersonating the pair. in the last hour he has released a statement on social media apologising to katie price and her son. he said in a statement he should never have done this, he is sorry, it was never my intention to offend harvey, katie or anyone else. he goes on to say he has written to them and offered to meet them in person with a view to getting behind their petition about online bullying. this video emerged last month. it came to light at a time when stokes was already under intense scrutiny because of an incident where he was arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm following an incident outside a bristol nightclub. this statement is the first time we've heard from him on any subject since that incident. following that incident it means he

former san francisco 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick first protested against racial injustice and police brutality by kneeling down during the united states national anthem in the summer of 2016. since then, a whole movement has grown around that gesture. with the us presisdent donald trump condemning those who "take a knee" as unpatriotic. well our sports news reporter richard conway has been out in the usa over the past week looking into the issue, and joins us now. richard, just how divisive an issue has this become in the nfl? it's highly divisive. sport has a lwa ys it's highly divisive. sport has always been wrapped up in political protest. one has to think backs to jackie owens, muhammad ali as american examples. but the scale of the protest we have seen and the response from president donald trump saying goes layers who do kneel during the anthem are unpatriotic, not respecting the american flag, it has taken it to a whole new level. sport it seems is now the new front line in the racial and political

divide. both sides very entrenched on this. the nfl commissioner saying late yesterday he hopes away can be found through this. he wants the to stand, that was left on today on twitter by president trump. that is where the situation lies. an important meeting is coming up next week. the players today, lots of nfl players who have protested, saying it is their constitutional right to freedom of expression and freedom of speech. it seems this issue is very entrenched on both sides. and, richard, you've caught up with many of the big names involved in the story — who have you been speaking to and what have they had to say? i've been travelling across the united states the past few days, and i've been speaking as you say to tom brady, the likes of the first african—american coach to win a super bowl and others within the sport itself. one is robert croft, the owner of the new england
6:36 pm
patriots, this most successful. he has to find a path through. he is stuck between the president and his players. it is very important to respect our flag and our arms. but i also respect the right of people in this country to make statements or protest peacefully in a way that is appropriate to them. i think there we re appropriate to them. i think there were some comments made about what oui’ were some comments made about what our young men were doing which were a little inflammatory and inappropriate. and i thought i had to speak out and i spoke to the team andl to speak out and i spoke to the team and i told them that they were free to do what they thought was correct. and the way you build team and you build success is to let people be themselves. so the difficulty therefrom robert

is getting that path whereby players can protest but perhaps not during the anthem. there has been a signal could impact on nfl ratings, lots of fa ns could impact on nfl ratings, lots of fans feel that anger towards their tea m fans feel that anger towards their team members. ispoke fans feel that anger towards their team members. i spoke to one fan in kansas city last week and who said he would boo any player who knelt evenif he would boo any player who knelt even if they had gone on to score a touchdown. a very entrenched position. this is the position the nfl find themselves in and there will be a reaction matter what happens in the coming days as the nfl tries to find that way through between those who protest and the right of those who think they should be patriotically respect the anthem. a very divisive topic indeed. you can hear more on our sports corresponded on a special programme on bbc radio five live from seven o'clock and bbc two's newsnight. england's former director of professional rugby, rob andrew, has told the bbc a player strike is "feasible" over the next 12 months. andrew has written a book outlining his experiences in professional rugby union and says the current level of injuries to players is not sustainable in the intense schedule —
6:38 pm
and believes they may well choose to take industrial action over the issue. i think it's feasible, yeah. the players bodies are giving. that is not sustainable long—term. the season structure sadly has always been a battle, we have battled with it 20 years, and it is trying to get a pint into a... a quart into a pint pot. you are trying to fit too much in cover the same players being asked to repeat over and over again ina very asked to repeat over and over again in a very demanding sport. i think the players will have a big say over the players will have a big say over the next 12, 18 months. to try and find that this holy grail which, when i was involved in trying to search for avalon time as well, and it is difficult. but something will give and eventually if the players feel it is too much, if they decide

not to turn out there isn't much of a product if no one is on the pitch. now after a long, hard —fought world cup qualifying campaign, we're a fair bit closer to knowing who the 32 teams will be arriving in russia next summer — and fans of the world's top two players in the world will be very happy indeed. current ballon d'or holder cristiano ronaldo will be there after he and his portugal team—mates lea pfrogged switzerland to win their group with a 2—0 victory in lisburn. striker andre silva wrapped things up. things were tense for lionel messi and argentina when ecuador took and early lead in their must win qualifier in ecuador but the five—time ballon d'or winner hit a hat—trick in the altitude of quito which meant the avoided a shock elimination. after a ll after all of the insults and of course a retirement from international football, a course a retirement from internationalfootball, a great night for the enormously. there were jubilant scenes in the central american group for panama —

a country ofjust four million — defying the odds to reach the world cup for the very first time. they beat costa rica 2—1 — with their president promptly declaring today a national holiday. no such smiles on the faces of the players from the us or chilly. the american captain said it was the perfect storm, what could have gone wrong did as they were beating 2—1 by trinidad and today. is the first time they will miss the world cup since 1986. there were tears afterwards. the back—to—back champions chilly were had high hopes as well but they and their golden generation could not deliver this time. alexis sanchez and his team—mates were beaten 3—0 by brazil to drop out of contention. the manager left hisjob to drop out of contention. the

manager left his job today, retired from international football as well. we will get a little more on the exit by the united states. earlier i spoke to that former captain and asked him where that defeat ranked in their history. it is the worst day in us soccer history. the world cup, keep in mind in the us obviously soccer is not the number one sport and we as a soccer playing nation and as an emerging soccer playing nation cannot afford to waste these platforms that come along every four years. we grab them with the women's team but we have to make sure that we do with the men's tea m make sure that we do with the men's team because it changes perspective, it gains credibility and relevancy, not just it gains credibility and relevancy, notjust domestic it gains credibility and relevancy, not just domestic and it gains credibility and relevancy, notjust domestic and around the world, and to waste that it is hugely damaging to the progress of the sport. soccer is not going away, the sport. soccer is not going away, the sky is not falling and it isn't going away, but this is a definite body blow. one of those disappointed

today. he was not the only one because the netherlands as well, sad faces over there. they needed american seven goal win over sweden that had not materialised. their captain scored both goals in a 2—0 win but he is another player who has retired from international football today after 97 caps. we asked the former defender what has gone wrong. questions have been asked over there as well to get back to that level where we were. but sometimes we need to be realistic. and say do we at the moment strong enough to compare ourselves with big countries like germany, england, spain, italy, or whatever. at the moment we are not there yet because there is a shifting of players as well. experience very good top players stop playing for the national team, young players came in. they need to show themselves now. as a certain

level. that makes it difficult as well for them to show themselves and to get results in the qualification groups. well, let's take a look at who's through to russia so far. as discussed already a few big names not involved, but some of the usual suspects are there as always. a few surprises. panama. iceland have made it through, you will remember the big scenes from 2016. egypt are through, great scenes for them. saudi arabia is well also through. plenty to look forward to in russia next summer. could paul scholes about to make a return to football? oldham athletic have interviewed the former manchester united and england midfielder about the vacant manager's job at the club. temporary manager richie wellens has won three out of three games in charge since the sacking ofjohn sheridan. england have qualifed for the knock out stages of the u17‘s world cup in india — they beat mexico 3—2 making

he revcived an mbe after a great 2016 which saw him win the gold at the golf event in rio last year. plenty still to come but we will turn our attention to boxing. former two—weight world champion carl frampton has been speaking to the bbc ahead of his fight with mexico's horacio garcia next month. it's the northern irishman's first fight since january, and his first since the split with long—time manager barry mcguigan and his trainer son shane. i spoke to him a little earlier on about his upcoming bout. i'm looking forward to it a lot. i have not boxed at home in belfast for probably two and a half years now. the atmosphere is always incredible so i can't wait to get under the lights again and hopefully put in an explosive performance. your last fight was called off so it is ten months probably since you would have got in the ring. producing it will affect you? would have got in the ring. producing it will affect you ?|j think it will be ok. i have full
