5:14 pm
officially. we had that initial tweet from warwickshire police to say that they were dealing with an incident. but of course as ever there is lots of speculation on social media, people who were there, staff in the restaurants and the cinema in the complex, the bowling alley. a place which would have been very, very busy with people. lots of speculation. reports of a man with a shotgun who may have taken hostages. there is no official confirmation of any of that. a little earlier i spoke to another person caught up in what had happened, carl lenton. he told me what he had seen. what had happened, carl lenton. he told me what he had seenlj what had happened, carl lenton. he told me what he had seen. i was with my family in a restaurant across from the bowling alley. the manager came around and told us we we re manager came around and told us we were on lockdown. there had been an incident in the bowling alley across the road. what did you see? was

5:17 pm
incident in nuneaton. i am joined by the local mp, marcusjones. thank you are speaking to me. what are your first thoughts? i'm extremely concerned for the people that are at bermuda park. i'm concerned obviously for members of the police force that are trying to keep those people safe. i have spoken very briefly to the warwickshire police, the current commissioner, about this incident. i'm waiting for an update from a senior officer from warwickshire police. but i am taking the view at the moment that we must allow the police to get on with theirjob, do their work, allow the police to get on with theirjob, do theirwork, and hopefully keep the people that are there safe. and is it your understanding that this is an ongoing situation, that they are still dealing with something, whatever it is? can you give an indication of what it might be? there are a lot of eyewitness reports. i'm not absolutely sure of
5:18 pm
all the information. i don't think it would be right for me to actually try to speculate as to what is or isn't going on. i think it is important at this stage that the police are allowed to do their work in terms of some of the speculation thatis in terms of some of the speculation that is coming out, if some of the information... it is a very sensitive situation. i have spoken toa sensitive situation. i have spoken to a friend of mine who was in the soft play area next to the bowling alley that is being talked about. from the friend of mine that i spoke to, he said that the police are very quickly —— very quickly moved them toa quickly —— very quickly moved them to a local hotel as a place of safety to avoid the incident clearly going on. ok, thank you for that. marcus jones, the going on. ok, thank you for that. marcusjones, the local going on. ok, thank you for that. marcus jones, the local mp. going on. ok, thank you for that. marcusjones, the local mp. we have just had another tweet from the

5:21 pm
bermuda park, which is a bowling alley, a cinema and a soft play area. and we have heard from various people who told the local media, they have been telling us as well, and they have been on social media, saying there is a man with a sawn off shotgun. they say that he has taken hostages. none of that has been confirmed. we have had lots of tweets. the bbc has spoken to people who have talked about this man. he is said to be about a0 years old. about five foot ten. there was one tweet, unconfirmed, i must say this has not been confirmed by the bbc, that the local radio station has said one eyewitness told them a man entered the bowling alley with what she believed to be a sawn off shotgun and threatened customers, saying they would not live to see tomorrow. that has not been
5:22 pm
confirmed. we know that the ambulance service is there. and that they no longer have their police helicopter there. they no longer have the air and events there. three helicopters, police helicopters, are at the scene. a lot of activity. police will tell us more as it develops. it is a huge operation. lots of eyewitnesses saying the police were there very quickly. but from listening to those eyewitnesses, it was clearly a terrifying experience for people there in a retail park? absolutely. it isa there in a retail park? absolutely. it is a very busy day. it is a complex were a lot of people go on sunday. it is the beginning of half term. lots of people in the cinema. they are on lockdown. they can't get out of the cinema. they have been told to stay there. the same with some of the restaurants and cafes. people are being told to stay indoors and not come out. at the soft play area, some of the children have now been moved. there are no
5:23 pm
longer children there. it must have been terrifying to start with when that first happened. this was at 3:a0pm. we're getting a lot of the information on social media and from local papers and from the coventry telegraph in particular, which has had a lot of tweets from people telling them they were very worried, they are frightened. somebody in the cinema saying they didn't know what happened, the lights just went off. now it does seem quite calm. there area now it does seem quite calm. there are a lot of police. the ambulance service, west midlands ambulance service, west midlands ambulance service, have told us that as yet there are no casualties. thank you very much for that update. police have confirmed the incident is not connected to any terrorist activity. the bbc has been speaking to some eyewitnesses who describe what they saw. we were in the play area. the adventure park in nuneaton. we were

5:27 pm
sunshine, certainly through the early pa rt sunshine, certainly through the early part of the day. more cloud streaming in from the south west producing some showers. the crucial factor is our weather has been coming in from the north—west. it has given quite a cool feel. tonight we hold on to clear skies in the east and it will turn chilly. notice out west weeks which the winds to south—westerly is. that would bring milder by the end of the night. with it, a lot of cloud, outbreaks of rain, misty and murky conditions. we start of monday morning with pretty mild weather in the south west of england. ia degrees in plymouth. outbreaks of rain. the rain splashing eastwards across southern counties of england into the midlands. east anglia starting the day dry. wet weather from the word go across wales. rain moving into northern england as well. even by this stage, northern ireland will be clearing up. spells of sunshine. as we go through the day it is a

5:29 pm
hello, this is bbc news with vicki young, the headlines: warwickshire police say an incident at a retail centre in nuneaton is not terror related. police are telling the public to avoid bermuda park as they deal with an ongoing incident. we seen deal with an ongoing incident. we seen the man go into the bowling area there, took some hostages, and thatis area there, took some hostages, and that is everything what we know. there are unconfirmed reports that a man with a shotgun in the bowling alley in bermuda park has taken hostages. west midlands ambulance service say there are no casualties at present. warwickshire police have urged the public to stay away from the bermuda park leisure complex in nuneaton while they deal with what they're calling an "ongoing incident". unconfirmed reports say a man with a sawn—off shotgun is holding people hostage at a bowling alley. the police have confirmed the incident is not connected to any terrorist activity. west midlands ambulance service has said there have been no casualties. a short time ago, i spoke to megan westwood,
5:30 pm
an eyewitness who was in a play area in the leisure complex when the incident began. basically, we were in the bermuda play area, me and my friend were about to leave, but the staff said to get away from the windows because there was a man with a knife. as time went on, we were told that he actually had a gun, and they barricaded the doors, kept us away from the windows, then we were told he had hostages in the bowling alley next to us. and then, eventually, we got evacuated one by one by the back door into the hotel to us. it is full of children at the minute. we can hear in the background, obviously a lot going on. we are seeing some of the pictures that you took, and video of you having to leave the area. just described, you must have been absolutely petrified. it was hard work keeping the kids
5:31 pm
calm because they are all confused. what was everyone else doing? taking pictures, running, keeping the kids calm. and did you see any police activity? yeah, there was quite a view like bullet—proof bands. —— vans. i have just view like bullet—proof bands. —— vans. i havejust seen view like bullet—proof bands. —— vans. i have just seen an air ambulance take off. there is police in full body suits with guns, the full thing, really. were staff saying a thing to you? were they speculating about what was going on to my at first they said they weren't disclosing any information, but as time went on, they let us know, they did good. tell us about the retail park, what is there within that complex? there is a gym, a big play area, cinema, restau ra nts, a big play area, cinema, restaurants, a hotel, that is about it, really. we are in the holiday
5:32 pm
inn express what are they telling you about how long you are going to be there? our car is parked near the bowling alley, so we cannot leave yet, it depends if you can get a lift or not. you must be trying to keep the children quiet, but try not to upset them as well. the worst thing is the batteries have gone in our phones, so we have got to stay here, really. megan westwood, in the soft play area at the bermuda park in nuneaton. we have just had an update, the press association now reporting that a gunman has taken two members of staff hostage at the mfa bowl complex in nuneaton, according to its chief executive. so that is the press association reporting that a
5:33 pm
gunman has taken two members of staff hostage at the mfa bowl complex in nuneaton. that chimes with reports on social media that have not been confirmed by the police, but they are now saying that a gunman has taken two members of staff hostage. we know that there are no casualties at the moment, that has been confirmed by warwickshire ambulance service. they did confirm that they were called and 3:a0 this afternoon, that they did have an air ambulance, which has now left. they do have paramedics on the scene. this was the ambulance service to each just a few minutes ago. obviously this is an ongoing
5:34 pm
incident, we have spoken to many witnesses who have been frightened by what they have seen, armed police, several dozen of them, and they have been evacuated from various parts of this complex, which includes cinema, bowling alley, restau ra nts, includes cinema, bowling alley, restaurants, hotels. we have spoken to parents with their children, everybody trying to give everybody calm, but it does feel as if it has been handled with a lot of calm, but staff, of course, speculating about what has been going on. kelly perrett was at the frankie and benny's restaurant at the bermuda park, and she told me what she had seen. so the police have tried to get as many people out of the restaurant by a side entrance as possible, but people who have brought their cars toa people who have brought their cars to a safe place. however, people whose cars are in the main area, they are still in the restaurant, so it is still on lockdown, and everybody, lots of people are still
5:35 pm
in the building. so tell may what happened, what was the first you knew that something like this was going on? i had been to the gym and my friend works here, so i popped in to see her on the lunch break, and all of a sudden there was people from the bowling running in, telling eve ryo ne from the bowling running in, telling everyone that there was an incident over at the bowling. the police were very quick on the scene and instructed everybody to stay indoors, lock the doors and no—one leave to go in or out at that time. and how did people react? that is an incredibly frightening situation for people, what was the reaction from people, what was the reaction from people in the restaurant? people, even though they were worried, were quite reassured with the police's response to this. they are still all there now, armed police surrounding there now, armed police surrounding the building, so it does feel, horrible and stressful as the situation is, it does feel very secure and contained. and what have they told you about how long you
5:36 pm
will be there? they said it could be anything up to five hours. this has been going on since about two o'clock this afternoon. i'm not really sure how long they think it is going to be. that was kelly speaking to us a short time ago. our reporter david crabtree is at the scene and is on the line, can you tell us what you have gleaned from the people there that you have spoken to? yeah, it seems that a lot of people did actually see the gunman with what they said was a sawn off shotgun. one guy we spoke to, chris turner, he turned up to pick up his children, aid and four years old from the soft play area, which is right next door. he said as he approached the building, a man in his a0s, he said a kind of rock or biker style clothing, a white man in his a0s, came towards him with a sawn off shotgun and told him in no
5:37 pm
uncertain terms to leave the area. he said the shotgun wasn't pointed directly at him, but he was waving it around directly at him, but he was waving itaround in directly at him, but he was waving it around in the, and directly at him, but he was waving itaround in the, and it was directly at him, but he was waving it around in the, and it was clear that there were people around him who were being kept in part of the building. now, we have had this similar story from two or three people now, and we have had it confirmed by police that two people are being held hostage at the moment, but it does seem, from where we are standing, and we are being kept a we are standing, and we are being keptafair we are standing, and we are being kept a fair way back from this ongoing incident, it does seem that a lot of people have now left the area. we are in a pub car park only area. we are in a pub car park only a few hundred yards away, and a lot of people are standing around. obviously, some of their cars had been trapped within the cordoned, and they have been talking with police to try to get themselves home. so there is a lot of disruption, a lot of confusion from their point of view about what is going on, but the police do seem to haveit going on, but the police do seem to have it under control as much as they can in such a serious and
5:38 pm
ongoing situation. and they are saying, officially, the ambulance service, that there are no casualties. there was an air ambulance that has now left, but presumably still a huge police presence. yeah, there is. they have closed off pa rt presence. yeah, there is. they have closed off part of the afour for four on the way into coventry, and they have also closed part of the slip road of the m6aa. —— the aaaa. people are being told they must stay away because this is an ongoing situation. we keep seeing ambulances turning up, as you say, earlier there was an air ambulance, but we understand that has now gone. we are still trying to pick up information from people who were there. there we re from people who were there. there were many people there trying to enjoy a sunday afternoon in his leisure complex just up the road from me here, and there is a great deal of shock about what is going
5:39 pm
