5:13 am
ash macca both presidents. —— both presidents. they discussed all sorts of issues, they talked about north korea, they talked aboutjoint cooperation from the point of view of economic cooperation, business, trade, but also other issues like cyber security, terrorism, they discussed the middle east, they discussed the middle east, they discussed drug abuse and the issues that that raises in both countries, and how they can tackle that together. discussions on many issues. let's go live to our correspondent, who is in beijing as well. steve mcdonnell, you have been listening in to that as well. steve, both residents were at pains to talk about how warm the relationship is between the two of them, and how much collaboration there is. in real terms, i wonder what we will see in terms, i wonder what we will see in terms of an ounce of alls that you we re terms of an ounce of alls that you were talking about earlier? —— announceables that you were talking
5:14 am
about. yes, that is the point of this, really. they were very flowing in their language and their praise for each other, but when it comes to concrete steps to change anything, that remains to be seen. we heard a xijinping talking that remains to be seen. we heard a xi jinping talking about these deals that have been announced in conjunction with donald trump's trippier. $250 billion worth of deals, we are led to believe, between chinese and us companies. but when you look at them, a lot of these, they are just these so—called memorandums of understanding. it is ha rd to memorandums of understanding. it is hard to see whether that will rip isn't a genuine contract. you know, we are going to buy this many units from you and you are going to deliver them to us. instead, it is like, we think we might do this in the future, sort of thing. so it is not necessarily as major a breakthrough as it would suggest. nevertheless, you cannot be too cynical about these things, and better to have those memorandums of understanding than not have them. as for donald trump, i think it was
5:15 am
interesting, we didn't hear much from xijinping on north korea. i'm not sure i heard him refer to north korea at all. but donald trump spoke a lot about it. earlier, at a business gathering, he said china could quickly and easily fix the problem of north korea. i don't know if you use that language when he went face—to—face with xijinping. that is how language when he went face—to—face with xi jinping. that is how we spoke about it with business leaders. interesting that he referred to the north korean menace and he said this, it is interesting, 110w and he said this, it is interesting, now is the time to liberate this region from this nuclear menace. i don't know if he is talking about regime change. the chinese certainly wouldn't be going along with that. if he is talking about ridding the peninsular of nuclear weapons, that isa peninsular of nuclear weapons, that is a different matter. just to say, steve, it is tricky to hear the press conference where you
5:16 am
are, but president xijinping mentioned north korea and he said they have reiterated a commitment to achieve a geenie to arise north korea, and both china and the us would maintain communication on that issue —— denuclearised. as you say, donald trump was much more forthright, and said it would require more collective action. the question is what happens now? it would seem both presidents are at pains to say how historic this meeting has been on the responsibility they both have when it comes to the issue of peace in the region, the korean peninsular, and also beyond that. of course. this wasn't really a press conference, we could say. it was like a statement. they both came out and said something. but it is something to see the two most powerful people in the world up there together saving they will call
5:17 am
rate with one another. you are right, i did not hear sheeting pink say they would be ongoing communication over north korea —— xi jinping. how do you get them to give up jinping. how do you get them to give up nuclear weapons when they have nailed their colours to the mask and they have said this is part of our raison d'etre, and they said they are prepared to negotiate once they have a fully capable intercontinental ballistic missile, then they will start talking. but for china and the us, that is a bit late. for now, thank you so much. 0ur correspondent in beijing. you are with the briefing. welcome to the programme. it was an unusual start to the programme. we live in beijing where us president trump and chinese president xi were addressing
5:18 am
the press, talking about their discussions this morning and some of theissues discussions this morning and some of the issues that they have talked about and some of the agreements that they have made in principle. steve was talking through some of the issues. general electric has announced three commercial deals with chinese partners. those deals amount to around three and a half billion dollars in terms of value. that is something that has happened on the sidelines of this state visit. now, let's talk about other stories in the news. the british prime minister theresa may is under pressure to restore stability to the government after the second resignation from her cabinet in a week. the international development secretary, priti patel, has stepped down after being summoned back from africa by mrs may, to answer more questions about her unauthorised meetings with israeli politicians. here's our political correspondent, alex forsyth. arriving in london, priti patel could have guessed herfate. she had
5:19 am
been summoned back from kenya by number ten, been summoned back from kenya by numberten, an been summoned back from kenya by number ten, an official trip to africa cup short. she entered downing street by the back door and left having lost herjob —— cut short. resigning after failing to disclose details of unauthorised meetings with israeli politicians. in her letter to the prime minister, she said i accept my actions fell below the high standards that are expected of a secretary of state. for the second time in just over a week, theresa may must now decide how to fill a gap around the top table. michael fallon quit as defence secretary last week over his personal conduct. this team was carefully chosen to represent different tory views over brexit, and some are keen that is maintained. there is a divide between people who want brexit to mean we are basically staying within the eu. they are essentially the remain as who are unchanged. and they give a veneer of acceptance but
5:20 am
haven't truly accepted —— remainers. there are quite a lot of people who we re there are quite a lot of people who were quite balanced when they made the decision as to which side to support, who are now really rather enthusiastic about brexit and want to get on with it properly. whatever the prime minister's decision about who should now sit in her cabinet, she will face intense scrutiny over her choice. now to our top business story. the driverless bus in la has been in an accident. dave lee has been covering this story for us. it has been obviously quite a furore because this issue of driverless vehicles has been pushed hard by some companies like google. they seem some companies like google. they seem to be having a lot of issues as they take to the roads, the real roads. this bus had people on it, a truck collided with it. it would
5:21 am
seem truck collided with it. it would seem it is not the fault of the d riverless seem it is not the fault of the driverless bus. of course they are going to investigate it. we are asking viewers if you would get online. most of them are saying no. i think online. most of them are saying no. ithinki online. most of them are saying no. i think i would get online. this highlights the potential challenge of rolling out technology when you have not controlled the possible externals and this is a classic example. nothing wrong with a bus and the technology itself. the problem was someone on the outside crashing into the bus. i think it probably highlights the challenge on the road to driverless cars and d riverless the road to driverless cars and driverless bosses. there will be bumps on the way. the question is if it is the price we pay for innovation and new technology. it is the price we pay for innovation and new technologym it is the price we pay for innovation and new technology. it is ultimately going to happen. we have seen ultimately going to happen. we have seen companies like google, amazon. it is happening in silicon valley. it is happening in silicon valley. it is happening in silicon valley. it is only a matter of a few years before we start to see wider take—up of this technology. incredible stuff i think. 0k right. we are going to
5:22 am
talk through all of the stories in the news briefing. we have had a lot of tweets on this subject. tommy says after getting the bugs worked out in five years he might climb on a bus. ptas in england says no, i would stay with my pushbike —— tj yates. it is a lot cheaper as well. so many views coming in as well. now with news about football world cup playoffs and the rest of today's sport briefing here's holly hamilton. here is what we are looking forward to this thursday — the last chance saloon of the world cup, the play—offs, with two matches taking place in belfast. zagreb battling to clinch one of the last four spots in russia next year. and we look ahead to this weekend's world tour finals in london — can rafa nadal finally clinch that elusive title? since gaining independence croatia have qualified for every world cup they've entered.

5:24 am
watching and want to one—day play in it and one—day win it, so yes, looking forward to playing in sa again. now, here's what you might have missed. samoan rugby has been declared bankrupt by the nation's prime minister ahead of the upcoming test matches against scotland and england in the uk later this month. the prime minister has even asked members of the public to donate money to keep the sport alive. the test matches this month are not under threat, but samoan rugby say they need to host more matches in their own country to genrate the revenue needed to keep going. we need a better revenue share of the profits being generated at the big stadiums around the world. as by big stadiums around the world. as rugby has become more business oriented, we have seen the slip off, and we have gone further behind.
5:25 am
