has football got a problem on its hands when it comes to engaging the next generation? the bbc‘s price of football survey is out today, and it shows the bookmakers and computer games engage young people more than kicking a ball. what's more, it's the cost of games that puts the vast majority of 18 to 2a—year—olds off attending games. our reporter katherine downes is at the home of premier league side stoke city. a day out at the football at stoke city will probably cost you around £35. that is give or take any extra treat you might find yourself in the clu b treat you might find yourself in the club shop. that is below average for

the premier league but, according to 80% of 18 to 2a—year—olds we spoke to, it's still too much. 56% of them would rather stay at home than to pay the prices to go and watch live football. we said olivia, a big stoke fan, and sam, who prefers to stay at home to watch football, to stoke to work out if a day here is good value for money. in olivia. i'm 18. i've been a stoke fan for about five years. in sam, i'm 18 and i'm going to my first premier league game in five years. when i started earning money started paying for my own ticket. usually, i'd rather watch it at home or get updates on my phone or sit and play fifa. lets go and have a look at the club shop. that a tv remote, £25! you'd never

lose it. you'd just lose £25. how much would you pay for this shirt? £45 much would you pay for this shirt? £115 you'd have to pay to to wear the red and white. that suits you. football still brings people together even if you are not there because you still engaged. a cut their prices since being in the premier league, so it's not that bad. —— they've cut. let's go and get a pie. i might have some. they don't take cards. i might have enough to get a coke. it's the same ain! enough to get a coke. it's the same again! we missed a stoke goal. why does this always happen to me? it's nice, isn't it? a lot of my generation of people do everything

online, whether that is social media or gaming. if they came to the game, i think they'd still enjoyed it, but obviously there's different means of how they get the fifa filly feel for real football. if i was given £40 to go to real football. if i was given £40 to gotoa real football. if i was given £40 to go to a match or, would you rather use go to a match or, would you rather use this money to go out on a night or have meal with mates, i wouldn't spend it on a live match. would this encourage you to come to more live matches? i don't know. i'm freezing. i wouldn't be this cold in my bedroom. i'm not entirely convinced that sam is necessarily going to be persuaded to leave the warmth of his bedroom to come back to another chilly match, and earlier i asked the man who normally sits there, mark hughes, the manager of stoke, whether he is concerned about attracting young fans.|j whether he is concerned about attracting young fans. i would imagine the 18 to 24 group is a bit different, because they probably
6:36 pm
missed out on a lot of the initiatives set up for even younger fans, or so it's initiatives set up for even younger fans, or- so it's probably an fans, or oaps. so it's probably an area that needs to be looked at, to try and encourage or make sure that they don't miss out maybe an initiatives that other groups and other age groups have the benefit of. mark hughes saying that 18 to 24—year—olds probably need more help to get to live games. arsene wenger agrees, saying the game needs to do more, because there are real concerns that football could be losing touch with a generation of fans. plenty still to come, including roger federer rolling back the years with a third straight win at the atp finals. england against australia in rugby union is what the autumn was made for, and eddiejones tells me it's not how you win, its just winning that matters. he's looking to some good old english rugby at twickenham this saturday. later, i'll have the

with the england camp today. england's rugby union players have moved from their leafy luxury of their traditional training camp in surrey to this very nice hotel on the outskirts of twickenham, as they build up to their game against australia. it's all part of eddie jones's idea of getting the team accustomed to moving and locations, because that is what they will have to do in the world cup, and he tries to do in the world cup, and he tries to look after every detail. of course, as england coach, he has been very successful. last time against argentina, england were less than fluid. although they won, it drew criticism. running back owen farrell into midfield should help with the fluency, but doesn't a coach's job with the fluency, but doesn't a coach'sjob begin with the fluency, but doesn't a coach's job begin and with the fluency, but doesn't a coach'sjob begin and end with with the fluency, but doesn't a coach's job begin and end with the word victory? i put that point to jones earlier. does it ever matter how you win in sport, as long as you
