volvo said china's booming e—commerce sector will over great opportunities for autonomous delivery vehicles. meanwhile, futurist website the verge asks whether tesla's much heralded launch of an all—electric truck will be received favourably considering the lack of infrastructure currently available for electric vehicles. finally, the new scientist reveals how astronomers have sent a radio message to a neighbouring star system, one of the closest known to contain a potentially habitable planet. however, if we are lucky enough to get a reply, we will have to wait up to 25 years to receive the return message. it would still be quicker than the replies i from some friends. so let's begin. with me is priya lakhani, who is a successful entrepreneur and founder and ceo of century tech. what message would you ask to alien life out there? we will share some m essa 9 es we

life out there? we will share some messages we have had coming through a little later. priya, letters begin with this story in the toronto star. the situation in yemen is absolutely desperate. and the fact that this blockade is perhaps stopping aid reaching those who are most in need, yet you have these arguments and denials over who was to blame. exactly. it is i was the normal people who suffer. we are saying thousands and thousands of children suffering. flareups thousands and thousands of children suffering. fla reups of thousands and thousands of children suffering. flareups of cholera. fast spreading diptheria. there has been a plea to saudi arabia, really, to open up the red sea port, which is being controlled by iranian backed hootie revels —— houthi rebels. there is increasing hostility between iraq and saudi arabia. they have to start thinking about the people in yemen and the hundreds of thousands of lives that will be lost if they cannot sort the situation out. as you say, this is ordinary

people on the ground suffering through what is eight proxy war, as many said, between the two great powers in the region, saudi arabia and iraq. attention seemed to be getting and worse. that is the problem. this story is unfolding every single day. it is incredibly dangerous. the united nations obviously getting involved. we have to see how saudi arabia respond to this. hopefully with the new crown prince and the announcement he has been making, hopefully he can see sense in opening their support or get help in terms of stemming the flow, he is concerned about the flow of arms into yemen. if they can move on quickly we may get some humanitarian aid into yemen quickly. indeed. let us turn our attention to the independent. a uk paper. the governor of the bank of england saying that the uk economy has gone from me the top of the g7 board to

near the bottom. yes, this is desperately sad news. this is all down to brexit, they say. the fact that there is so much uncertainty and instability. i love mark carney‘s words. he says "people should not have to worry about inflation and financial stability, we will make sure inflation stays low and banks stay strong." he is trying to send a positive and strong message about the uk economy. we we re message about the uk economy. we were the crown, the jewel of europe. now we cannot sort things out. now we are at the bottom of the g7, which is not ideal. he says there is, althoughjust which is not ideal. he says there is, although just within the last week or so, his monetary policy committee at the bank of england deemed there was enough strength in the economy to raise interest rates. inflation were strong, economic growth, although not at the levels precrisis, it has been consistently

growing one quarter after another. some will see him as the remainer in chief. if he scaremongering? scaremongering and talking to brexit when people to be making a success of it. we have a summit in a matter of it. we have a summit in a matter of weeks and we don't know where we will stand in terms of trade within the eu. it is causing huge amount of uncertainty. in my business, artificial intelligence and technology, we are not able to hire as well as we could before. there is as well as we could before. there is a lot of focus on this article that is right about the supply chain issues. there will be companies in the uk that are producing products that are part of a supply chain throughout europe. if we can't sort out these trade deals and figure out what the transition process is, that is gorging asthma causing huge instability. he is right to say what he is saying. we are all concerned. what we would like to see is some certainty from our ministers, our leaders. and really get on with the process. priya, let us turn to one

5:51 am
and you are passing these trucks... there is a huge infrastructure problem. one of the articles we see today about volvo unveiling self driving trucks in beijing, it is interesting that what they are focusing on is that they are working with china's city planning departments and they're talking about dedicated lanes on highways. they are talking about infrastructure. that is what we need to talk about. it is a great we have this brand—new product, but what we see is that there are only about 6000 outlets in terms of tesla superchargers. the infrastructure is a key hurdle they have to overcome. absolutely. this is something we have to think about. i am all for self driving vehicles and automation, especially if you have a crisis in terms of filling jobs. what is your personal take on electric cars? when you next upgrade all, do you drive? i do drive. i drive a diesel and ifeel bad all, do you drive? i do drive. i drive a diesel and i feel bad about it every single day because of the emissions. my brother drives a

tesla. is all about tesla. the reason we don't have one at the moment is because of the cost. it is cost prohibitive for the normal consumer. that is something that is coming up here in terms of the customer who is making the purchase for the trucks, the larger companies, who are used to deal with in my former life as a food company founder, are they going to be buying thousands and thousands of vehicles? ca ntos loo k thousands and thousands of vehicles? cantos look that demand given that they have had to go back and solve problems with their electric cars —— can tesla ? problems with their electric cars —— can tesla? we saw a las vegas, a self driving car, shuttle bus, that was involved in a crash. this is the issue. how smart are these particular machines? they are saying that they are working with all sorts of technology. dedicated lanes on highways is absolutely not a bad idea. in beijing they are talking about short distances, 100 mile
5:53 am
distances, under 100 miles. tesla is claiming 500 miles with this particular truck, which is really exciting. it is about watching this space and seeing what happens, it really, in terms of how quickly can they develop this and who will be they develop this and who will be the first to purchase? new scientist, scientists sending a message out to the universe, a secret message to let it get any fa ke secret message to let it get any fake replies that make don't get any. they want to see if they can make contact with aliens. we have been asking what twits people would send. we have had a loss in. robert morton says please visit spaceship earth and teachers how to live harmoniously. ricky in japan earth and teachers how to live harmoniously. ricky injapan says if you choose to come be careful with what you say on twitter or you will lose the blue tick. virginia in the philippines says please don'tjudge us philippines says please don'tjudge us by the quality of our leaders. plenty of questions. thank you for

the good news is that the weather is looking good. lots of sunshine around. lots of clear, crisp autumn weather on the way. on thursday we saw a cold front moving across the uk and behind the cold front we have colder air and that cold air is in place right across the country right now. through the course of the night the skies have cleared the cold front out on the continent there. temperatures in towns and cities around 2—3 degrees. in rural spots it could be as low as minus four celsius just before sunrise. really chilly nights out there. the cold nights won't last for very long. we have some slightly milder weather on the way. more on that in just a second. this is what it looks like around eight o'clock in the morning on friday. a slightly different story in scotland. not quite the sunny skies. plenty of showers around in the western isles and the north of scotland. quite strong winds. across northern ireland, wales, and much of england it is a crisp start to the day. you can see the city centre temperatures around 2—3 degrees. even three degrees in the centre of london, which is pretty nippy and for exeter at eight

there will be some sunshine around, particularly in eastern areas. there is a low in the atlantic heading our way and the anticipation is that there will be cloud and rain spinning into some western and south—western areas a little bit later on on sunday. as i said, the cold air will not last for very long, by the time we get to sunday night and into monday the colder air is swept away and the milder atlantic air returns. goodbye. hello this is breakfast, with charlie stayt and naga hello, this is breakfast, with charlie stayt and naga munchetty. a promise from detectives to investigate every avenue in the case of missing teenager gaia pope. police are questioning a man on suspicion of murder of the 19—year—old. searches continue as her father speaks of the strain on his family. it is about the toughest thing we can go through. the family know she will be found. until we don't know
