in the words of the presiding judge, radko mladic was responsible for "the most heinous of crimes known to mankind". it was his orders that led to the slaughter in srebrenica of 8000 men and boys, who'd been separated from women, taken away in buses or marched off to be shot. it was the worst atrocity in europe since world war ii. mladic, known as the butcher of bosnia, tried to shout down the judge as the verdict was read today. in his absence he was declared guilty of genocide, crimes against humanity, extermination, deportation, forcible transfer, and the taking of hostages. the 74—year—old will spend the rest of his life behind bars. here's our special correspondent allan little from the hague. mr mladic, sit.
