in the new european, bonnie greer. so, the sunday telegraph claims that the prime minister has been warned by mp's not to retreat from a pledge to "take back control" of british laws from brussels post brexit. the sunday times, meanwhile, claims that a member of the labour party has died after apparently taking his own life amid allegations of sexual misconduct. the mail on sunday alleges that there are links between boris johnson and michael gove‘s bid to persuade theresa may to take a tougher stance on brexit and a russian tycoon. and finally the sunday express reports that meghan markle is being guarded by royal protection officers as the palace prepares to announce her engagement to prince harry. so let's begin. we start with the mail on sunday, and slightly confusing story, but
11:32 pm
this goes back to a letter written by michael gove. story of the night! people are getting excited about this. it is multi layered. we will go through point by point. earlier in the month, borisjohnson michael gove wrote a note to theresa may saying get tough. we need aid to accept tsar, we need this, we did that. and the mail on sunday, which gave us be that they were supposed to be for theresa may and gavin ba rwell to be for theresa may and gavin barwell only, they are now seeing the people behind this is this institute, anything tech. but this is not just any institute, anything tech. but this is notjust any old think tank. the men behind it apparently grew rich in rush hour thanks to their stakes in the big russian energy giant. they are said to be close to
11:33 pm
vladimir putin. whether or not the story really makes it clear, i mean, are you necessarily close to vladimir putin in those circumstances? i think there are some inference they are. yes, full disclosure, as they say. i spent a little time with this think tank. most people. they have a townhouse in berkeley square. you don't really know what is going on, but everyone is really nice. and apparently, well, what they do do, what they are therefore, is that they publish the prosperity index, which is about happiness. that is what it is about. if you hear the word prosperity, which they did here in a david beador speech, you know that is them. what people have been talking about the last six month is the amount of influence they have had
11:34 pm
with brexit. —— six months. they we re with brexit. —— six months. they were neutral during the referendum, but when it was decided, they decided to bring their expertise, whatever that was, into this process, and they appear to be influencing, appear to be influencing, appear to be influencing them. there are also i’uitioui's influencing them. there are also rumours that portions of vote leave pulled away because they have got involved. a lot of their work is pretty upfront, is that? there is no suggestion that... i think what the mail on sunday is saying, and i think this is correct, they are influential, they are, and we just need to know more about them. that is all. just find out who they are. the story does seem to have some evidence of their influence in that you're in the budget during the week that haven't put aside $2 -- £3 —— £3 billion. there is also
11:35 pm
suggestion that the racks at tsar is pa rt suggestion that the racks at tsar is part of their staff. i think what it boils down to is that, and we should be grateful that the story, but most people don't know how this think tank has become influential in thinking about leave. we just need to know more about them. i think there should be more upfront. when i was there, people didn't actually... they were very friendly, as is said, and a brighter this index, which is lovely, but not a lot of people knew what was going on. so it isjust transparency. staying with brexit, and other front page, transparency. staying with brexit, and otherfront page, the observer, here, has another story about the irish, and of course this is a difficult issue, the border. the desire to have no hard border between the north and the south. added to this, we could be facing a
11:36 pm
general election because we are cases in trouble. -- leo varadkar. the observer sandy way that a free and frictionless border will work is if we all remain within the single market and customs union. —— the observer said that the only way. but also ireland's european union commissioner said the border would be in the sea. and they do want that. so we see a whole lot of problems to which it is very difficult to see any solution. this goes back to the fact that a lot of
11:37 pm
the referendum was a referendum where we did not get a lot of information. i think there were things that should have been known, for instance, about ireland, which contains the uk's land border with europe. that is an important thing. also, northern ireland voted to remain. this is not a simple issue, it is not funny, nor something to throw away. this is a cast—iron issue. the eu are saying this is europe, you need to figure out what to do here. and one thing you can do is to keep northern ireland in the eu, which they would not... the uk would not accept that. is it. it
11:38 pm
mail change if there is an election in the republic before christmas. and an election, possibly, too, in germany. the border is very, very important. they will not change but the border. in germany it will go into coalition because they do not wa nt into coalition because they do not want the afd to have another election. so we have a situation where we had to deal with ireland. some newspapers like the sun, citing, that is ridiculous. —— sniping. the british people deserve to know more. it is not unreasonable. let's stay with brexit and the vote leave spending inquiry. this is a ready be announced. the official campaign to quit the eu is
11:39 pm
facing questions. an investigation is ready be launched. what we know about this? this is another slightly difficult one. there are so many complex tories on the front pages to giant. vote leave was the campaign to leave. —— there are so many complex stories on the front pages tonight. now the electoral commission is looking into donations, including one of £635,000 to an organisation called be leave. the big problem is this: berrer spending limits. that is the law. what vote leave is being accused of is getting money and then
11:40 pm
sending—off two satellites which we re sending—off two satellites which were actually vote leave itself. that is a violation. series consequences like they get fined or something, or it could be nullification. all of these things are there. —— serious consequences. vote leave deny this. they said that they were told by the election commission they were allowed to do that, and that seems to be taught. that seems to be the thinking. technically, i don't know, not being a lawyer, but if they were selling illegal going on, here, somebody could go to court and said runners again. i'm not saying that i would agree... these are not stories that excite you over your brexit tomorrow, are they? cyber slackers might. to be fed to them, they're talking about western productivity coming here, notjust british
11:41 pm
productivity. the idea being that there is a crisis of attention in there is a crisis of attention in the workplace. ever ready is so busy checking whatsapp and instagram and so checking whatsapp and instagram and so on, duty this is true?|j checking whatsapp and instagram and so on, duty this is true? i think we spent too much time on our phones. but who is out there tweeting that we we re but who is out there tweeting that we were going to be doing this? me. ijust wonder if we were going to be doing this? me. i just wonder if this is a we were going to be doing this? me. ijust wonder if this is a slightly a side issue to what is going to happen when productivity will take off when artificial intelligence replaces a great man —— great many jobs. then we will have other issues. i don't think we have a metric to measure what is going on. that had you measure productivity and people looking down on devices? there is a slowdown in productivity. we do notice that. but nobody really
11:42 pm
knows when is it about, yet. too much technology on your phone, not enough technology in your workplace, perhaps? there might be a clash there, but it is complicated, and we still don't know. ijust don't think we should get down on workers. i figure is more complicated than that. sticking with social media, a clampdown on facebook hate. what is this what about? apparently, facebook, they want to find out what is going on with facebook itself, in terms of russian, they think, bots taking a relevant conversation online. and facebook are being asked to take for this. we spoke a lot about this, about facebook and others, twitter, should they be clamping down on these things happening? i take a hardline view on this. they are not platforms, their publishers, and there should be
11:43 pm
accountable for their content in the exact same way as publishers are. and also, they should be addressing some of their issues. and an awful lot quicker. we have been doing a series of stories about videos on youtubein series of stories about videos on youtube in which, that are far too attractive to paedophiles, was youtube willing to take them down, even when it knew what the issues were? that is not as large as was needed to be. when need is organisation to be more accountable. i agree with you 100%. last week, twitter had a night of the long knives were it took a lot of blue ticks away from a lot of groups. again, we are at a moment with the sexual harassment, and the #metoo, that are clashing up against each other. but had you deal with different jurisdictions and ideas about what should be, when we are
11:44 pm
talking about an east coast tradition? we need to talk about the royal family. tradition? we need to talk about the royalfamily. engagement tradition? we need to talk about the royal family. engagement expected any day now as prince harry calls in the police to guard meghan markle. big mistake. that was thanksgiving. all the news outlets in america would have been shut down because of the turkey. if it would have come out then, britain would never have been forgiven. so i'm sure that they said do not do it, let's do it next week. i'm sure we are all very excited. i will be outweighed my flag. very excited. but think the nation needs something to raise the spirits. —— i will be out waving my flag. we must leave it there. that is the papers there. thank you for joining us. coming up next, it is the travel show. 20 years ago, dubai set out to become one of the most
11:45 pm
talked—about towns in the world. since then, this young city state, one of seven emirates in the uae, has largely succeeded. it's become one of the fastest—growing tourist destinations on the planet synonymous with spectacular skyscrapers, gigantic shopping malls and high—end hospitality, and also the occasional stories of tourists who fall foul of local customs.
