people want to see many people want to seejerusalem this eternal city which brings people together, but tonight it is being seen as a city which is people apart. bringing it back to the white house, when we were talking earlier with a various contributors to the programme, people have tried to make the point that perhaps donald trump will change his mind, that is most unlikely given what we have seen with this announcement, isn't it? well, he has recognised israel, jerusalem, as the capital of israel, that in itself is a significant decision. whether the embassy gets moved there or not, that is maybe just as disturbing to the palestinians and arab leaders as if there was a transfer or a building being made. he has basically said that the us has overturned decades of policy, and in the view of the palestinians, taken at unbalanced

approach to their holy city for territorial sovereignty over part of it. even if the embassy is not moved, and that will take a couple of years, there will not be much action on the ground, and it may not happen perhaps, but he has made this declaration and come out with a statement that recognises jerusalem as the capital for israel, and that in itself is enough of a provocation or disappointment to the arabs and palestinians, even if the building does not happen. i should say, us officials were saying yesterday that once the process starts, once the building starts to be constructive, it continues. it is not as if they get things going in a concrete way, then. at some point, usually buildings do get completed. thanks once again. more reaction from the egyptians, their foreign ministry rejecting the us decision to move the embassy to jerusalem. israel's

prime minister has been speaking in the last little while. let's remind you of what he said. we are profoundly grateful for the president for his courageous and just decision to recognisejerusalem as the capital of israel. and to prepare for the opening of the us embassy here. this decision reflects the president's commitment to an ancient but enduring truth, to fulfilling his promises and to advancing peace. the president's decision is an important step towards peace. there is no peace that does not includejerusalem as the capital of the state of israel. there was benjamin netanyahu. in terms of the reaction, obvious delight there from israel's prime minister, but you mentioned before, the two state solution, and at different stages in the last 11 months the donald trump, he has not

been behind that, he was asked and pushed on that, and recoiled. today we heard the words he used, how committed do you think the americans after that? people may remember that when donald trump the candidate started campaigning, people noticed that when he first started campaigning he seemed measured, he spoke about israeli interests and aspirations, palestinian interests and aspirations, then within a short time he's started talking about commitment to israel as the most important partner to the us, strategic ally, defending the rights of israelis, and he started tilting more towards, let's say, attachment to israel and the use of what should happen for the peace process. what we've been hearing senses become president is that he has not really come out and given his own personal commitment of his administration to a two state solution. it has to be said, it is more than 20 years now since the oslo peace process which was very much enshrining the idea of

a two state solution, which has led some palestinians to even say it's not going to work, let's look at a one state solution. there are different ideas being talked about, but as antonio cotan is reminded all of us tonight, and there are many who say really the only alternative, the only just alternative who say really the only alternative, the onlyjust alternative is a two state solution. a state for the palestinians, side by side, to use the language, side by side living in peace and security and israeli state. some watching what happened today might think, given trump sees himself as the ultimate deal—maker, why was this not done as part of a deal? saying, buti why was this not done as part of a deal? saying, but i have also agreed with the israelis they will do this or that, there has been an agreement that this will happen. barbara suggested they want to keep the peace process separates the palestinians could not pull out of it. there could be something given to both sides to make it a more measured response, if you like.

given all of what you have just said, afinal given all of what you have just said, a final thought as to where you think we are this evening after that major announcement. one thing bears mentioning, this is like the iran deal, something the president had to give a decision on, had to give a waiver, in times of the iran deal every quarter he had to say around was complying with this waiver, and it was irritating him for every time. it was the same with the waiver on moving the embassy to jerusalem, a get irritating him that he had to give the wave every time alike presidents before him. tonight he has said he wants to bring about the deal but in capitals around the world tonight, i think that deal—making is now in doubt. world tonight, i think that deal-making is now in doubt. thanks for that and for being with me for this special coverage. we close with those pictures from the white house is donald trump signed the paperwork after making that announcement. it
