6:33 pm
the commonwealth games federation that they can afford the £750 million that they have budgeted for the 2022 games. in return, the city has been praised for its dynamism and diversity. not that that gave it the edge over it's rivals. . . because there weren't any. birmingham was the only bidding city. phil mackie was at todays announcement. it hardly came as a surprise, but there was genuinejoy it hardly came as a surprise, but there was genuine joy when the announcement was made. it is my great pleasure to announce that the host of the 2022 commonwealth games will be birmingham! the bid focused on the second city's population, which is the youngest in europe. it also looked at its diversity. their rock people here who can trace their

heritage to all of the commonwealth nations. most of the venues already exist. they simply need an upgrade. this is an opportunity to reposition the city of birmingham. but also the economic benefit. it will generate over half a billion pounds for birmingham, and also for the uk. it's all about the legacy, notjust the stadium. these students could be participants in 2022. it's a great thing for me to aim for. i would love to be part of it with team england. it's a great opportunity for me to be able to aim for something in my hometown. there are already fantastic facilities here in birmingham, such as here at the alexandra stadium. but there are also concerns that the money it will
6:35 pm
cost to host the games at a time of austerity could leave the wrong legacy. some are concerned about the effect on council services, which are not that great at the moment, and also fears of disruption to the local community, and whether we will end up worse off or better of. despite concerns about costs, birmingham desperately fought to wind the bid. these are the athletes of the future. today when i announced the result, these i! and i2—year—olds. .. i doubt announced the result, these i! and i2—year—olds... i doubt any of these will be officiating, but they could be volunteers, because 16 is the age for volunteers. it's fantastic. the city often feels overlooked and disparaged. showing itself off in 2022 is now its goal. the city will become the third uk city to host the commonwealths

after manchester in 2002 and glasgow in 2014. the legacy birmingham hopes to leave goes beyond the world class sports venues that they have to provide. diane modahl won gold at the 1990 games, and earlier she spoke to my colleague, katherine downes. legacy is about two things. it's absolutely about bricks and mortar, venues and facilities, but it's also about young people and opportunities for communities to get involved. if we look at manchester, in 2002, we we re we look at manchester, in 2002, we were i think the best at being able to deliver that a sport regeneration success , to deliver that a sport regeneration success, if you like, where we transformed one of the most deprived areas across the city, which is now known as new east manchester, where we have the velodrome, the national
6:37 pm
squash centre, national taekwondo and a host of athletics facilities used by the public. that is what good legacy looks like, and that is the opportunity birmingham has to get it right. here is a brilliant opportunity to not only inspire young people to really take part in sport, it's great for the country. manchester were able to prove that, asa manchester were able to prove that, as a global opportunity, it has the opportunity to showcase birmingham in terms of their economy, their infrastructure, their ability to move away from sport, but to maximise the opportunity to show who they are, what they do and how well they are, what they do and how well they can do it. the commonwealth games is as significant now as it ever was. the football assocation will take no action over the manchester derby altercation between united and city

6:39 pm
be the caretaker manager at the weekend for the match against crystal palace was yellow against palace on saturday, i'm sure the fa ns palace on saturday, i'm sure the fans will be behind the team. the liberty stadium has been a difficult place for the team in recent months, so place for the team in recent months, soiam place for the team in recent months, so i am sure the fans will be right behind us. if we can get the noise going at the liberty stadium, i don't see why we can't go into the palace game without a positive mindset. swansea are now searching for a full—time replacement for paul clement. that will not be leon brittan. he did leave the door open for a potential return one day as the full—time manager, however. in terms of those full—time replacement for paul clement, the likes of tony

in the celebrations, alistair durden reports. absolutely magnificent! one of the biggest wins in bristol city's modern history, and the moment a young ball boy became the centre of their celebrations. as you can imagine, ten—year—old jayden neal didn't sleep much last night. amazing. like, how did we win that? just happiness. when we scored the second goal, he ran down the sideline, so i ran to him. he was the only one there. it was great to see him, because i needed to celebrate with somebody. see him, because i needed to celebrate with somebodylj see him, because i needed to celebrate with somebody. i think my heart stopped! i really do.|j celebrate with somebody. i think my heart stopped! i really do. i can't believe it! i can't believe it! 2-1
6:42 pm
bristol city. how'd you like that, jose mourinho? i think they were lucky, but they fought really hard. they are a really good team. i will just have to praise bristol city. praise from lee johnson's just have to praise bristol city. praise from leejohnson's dad, the man who almost took bristol city to the premier league ten years ago. he's doing well. i'm very pleased he's doing well. myself, the wife, the mother—in—law had an emotional night. there's still a bit of banter between us, who is the most successful bristol city manager out of us to? bristol city will play manchester city in the semifinals. you can bet that jayden manchester city in the semifinals. you can bet thatjayden neal will be there with his new best friend!
6:43 pm
chelsea and arsenal are in the other semifinal. still to come up, we are going to hearfrom semifinal. still to come up, we are going to hear from the wbo middleweight champion billyjoe saunders. and after a man who has led them for ten years left northampton saints, captain dylan hartley has his say. it was easy to fire shots from the outside. frustrating, because i see how hard people work, and it is personal. the ashes are lost for england's cricketers, but there are still two more tests to play. next up, melbourne and the boxing day test. james anderson says england failed at the key moments against australia. england's record wicket—taker has been speaking on the radio 5live podcast tailenders — which is available now to download. in those key moments that test
6:44 pm
matches sort of pivot on, we've been way off the mark. dave dealt with those moments better. the pressurised situations, we've just not been at the races, really. in a big series like this, that's what you need. the frustration is we know we are a good enough team. player for player, we know we've got enough to compete with australia, but those pressurised situations, those key moments... when we were 370—4, to only get 400 from there was a massive failure on our part, and you can't win a series if you perform like that. one positive in the england camp is the form of dawid malan on his first ashes tour. he's top scored for them with the bat with an average over 50. he's looking for every player to step up for the rest of the series.
6:45 pm
we all have our places to play for. we all have our places to play for. we all have our places to play for. we all have our legacy to leave. the mcg is going to be fantastic. 90 to 100,000 people. it was the one i really wa nted 100,000 people. it was the one i really wanted to score runs in the first few games so i could get there. it's disappointing we have nothing to play for from a team point of view in terms of the ashes. we are 3—0 down already, but i think the pride of the teams and the players will want to make this 3—2, and show we can play and perform out here. that's the key thing. the wbo world middleweight champion billyjoe saunders is still unbeaten after a superb unanimous points victory over canada's david lemieux in quebec over the weekend. back home now, the british fighter is making big plans for next year. here's our boxing correspondent, mike costello. billyjoe saunders is now revelling
6:46 pm
in the attention from the win at the weekend against canada's david lemieux. so comprehensive of the win that many are now questioning the quality of david lemieux, but beforehand, the bookmakers were suggesting the odds between them we re suggesting the odds between them were pretty even. but the win and the way it came about sets up saunders for the biggest names in the sport, including canelo alvarez and nrg golovkin. i always remember coming through myself and doing so well. i was thinking, one day, i would love to fight. i would rather fight golovkin than the two, because he is the unbeatable man, in my eyes. so i think you get more recognition for beating golovkin than canelo alvarez. but i am 100% up than canelo alvarez. but i am 100% upfor than canelo alvarez. but i am 100% up for fighting either one of them.
6:47 pm
i will leave that down to my management and frank warren. whoever they put in front of me, whoever they put in front of me, whoever they say fight, i will fight. if they say fight, i will fight. if they ring me and say, i've got king kong, so be it. it has been some turnaround for billy joe kong, so be it. it has been some turnaround for billyjoe saunders. less than a year ago he was telling me he was ready to walk away from the sport, so frustrated was he at the sport, so frustrated was he at the failure to secure the biggest fights. but now, under his trainer dominic ingle, and with a new—found confidence and commitment to the gym, he's looking forward to a bright future. the talent that many of us knew was there for so long but was hidden behind a cloak of indiscipline is now coming to fruition. 2018 could be a special year for fruition. 2018 could be a special yearfor him. england's elliot daly and nathan hughes will miss the start of six nations.
6:48 pm
daly has an ankle injury and could miss up to 12 weeks, while hughes is suffering from a knee problem and expects to be out for ten. missing both players will be a blow for eddiejones' side, who will be looking to win a third six nations title on the bounce. let's stay with rugby, northampton saints captain dylan hartley says the club's been in shock this week after the departure of their director of rugbyjim mallinder, the man who'd led the team since 2007. saints have lost their last five matches in all competitions — they've also lost all their games in this season's european champions cup — but speaking to james burridge, hartley says his team have come in for unfair criticism this season, and believes they can still turn things around. it's a shock. you turn up on a monday morning meeting, and that happens, but unfortunately it's pretty ruthless. the game to prepare for at the weekend, and the games come thick and fast. you move from
6:49 pm
european to premiership rugby, and there is not time to sit. many had known gym for a long time. it's difficult when there's families and livelihoods involved. the other way i look at it, this is professional sport, and we've got to appreciate its pretty cut—throat. it's easy for outside people to point the finger. people who don't know. it's easy to fire shots from the outside. do you feel frustrated by it? yes. fire shots from the outside. do you feelfrustrated by it? yes. i see how hard people work. it is personal, but it is results driven. this is professional sport, and people want results. all i can say to my team is, keep working, keep improving, and performance and results will come. and finally, huddersfield town defender mathiasjorgensen has offered to buy every fan who travels away to southampton on saturday
6:50 pm
a christmas drink as thanks for their "amazing" support this season. we had a long stretch of games where we didn't get results that we or the fa ns we didn't get results that we or the fans wanted, but still after losing 4-0 at fans wanted, but still after losing 4—0 at bournemouth, we had people standing, clapping and cheering us on. that was it. that was when i started thinking if there was something i might be able to dojust to show that i and we appreciate that. this says something different that. this says something different that we are usually told about footballers. you are supposed to be selfish people. is that a myth? definitely. it's how you want to portray people. it is easy to say that football men play ——
