about the disruption in the local community. how will you go about making sure it represents good value? the treasury have crawled all over this. it's correct that they should have done. we are very confident today that with their support, they are saying this is good value for money for the british taxpayer because we are expecting to get back the investment we put in and more. so it's a good starting point. the commercial success of glasgow's commonwealth games in 2014 helped secure britain's reputation as a sporting host. now it's birmingham's turn to deliver the event and to prove it's worth it. dan roan, bbc news. it was an unlikely hit on broadway, a hip—hop musical about one of the 18th century politicians who helped to establish the united states. hamilton is the story of a poor immigrant from the caribbean, who arrived in new york on the eve of the american revolution, and went on to become the country's first treasury secretary. it's been enthusiastically reviewed in the us, and it opened in london tonight. our arts editor will gompertz has been to meet the show‘s creator. # put a pencil to his temple, connected it to his brain # and he wrote his first refrain.# here is hamilton's creator, lin—manuel miranda, at the white house poetry slam in 2009, performing what would become the opening number of his musical about america's founding fathers. six years later it opened

in new york and became an instant classic. # what's your name, man? # alexander hamilton # his name is alexander hamilton #we # we are waiting in the wings for you. # and now it's in london, as is for a few days the man behind the show, who's been compared to... well... are you the 21st—century shakespeare? not even close! no, shakespeare wrote a mind—altering amount of dramas and comedies and sonnets, worked with other playwrights. i've written two musicals, so let's, everybody, chill out. # i'm past patiently waiting! # i'm passionately smashin‘ every expectation i recognised in the story of hamilton the story of so many immigrants who are coming to the united states today. and so i used the music that i love to tell their story. a lot has been made of the multiracial cast. this is the story of america then

told by america now. we're going to use every tool at our disposal to eliminate the distance between a modern audience and something that happened 200 somewhat years ago. the casting is part of that, and casting it to look like the way our country looks eliminates distance. when george washington is a young man of colour and he's running for his life, suddenly you're not filled with images of washington standing like this, crossing the delaware, he's not invincible any more. it's suddenly, these are real people. how nervous were you about bringing this show to the uk? i was not nervous at all. what i was very excited for was the reaction to king george iii in the shadow of buckingham palace. i mean, we're really right up the street, so the only change we've made in that direction is we have tarted up his outfit quite a bit. george iii might have lost america but he steals this show every night.

maybe the family in the big house he bought around the corner will make a royal appointment to see it. will gompertz, bbc news. that's it. now on bbc one it's time for the news where you are. hello there. you are watching bbc news. i'm olly foster. these are our sportsday headlines tonight. it's official — birmingham will be the 2022 host. but they were the only city on the commonwealth games shortlist. manchester city and manchester united are free her, the fa have no to charge them over milkgate. the six nations is some months away, but two of england's stars might

miss the tournament. good evening. there is another major sports event event coming to the uk, and it will be the most expensive since the london olympics five years ago. birmingham has convinced the commonwealth games federation that they can afford the £750 million that they have budgeted for the 2022 games. in return, the city has been praised for its dynamism and diversity. not that that gave it the edge over it's rivals. because there weren't any. birmingham was the only bidding city. phil mackie was at today's announcement. it hardly came as a surprise, birmingham was the only bidder, but there was genuine joy when the announcement was made. it is my great pleasure to announce that the

host of the 2022 commonwealth games will be birmingham! cheering the bid focused on the second city's population, which is the youngest in europe. it also looked at its diversity. their are people here who can trace their heritage to all of the commonwealth nations. most of the venues already exist. they simply need an upgrade. the benefits to the city are huge. this is an opportunity to reposition the city of birmingham. but also the economic benefit. it will generate over half a billion pounds gross for birmingham, and also for the uk as a whole. this is a wonderful christmas present for the city of birmingham. it's all about the legacy, not just the stadium. these students could be participants in 2022. it's a great thing for me to aim for. to try and get to these commonwealth games. i would love to be part of it with team england. it's a great opportunity for me to be able to aim for

something in my hometown. there are already fantastic facilities here in birmingham, such as here at the alexander stadium. but there are also concerns that the money it will cost to host the games at a time of austerity could leave the wrong legacy. 0pinion is very mixed. some people are very excited. some are concerned about the effect on council services, which are not that great at the moment, and also fears of disruption to the local community, and whether we will end up worse off or better off. despite concerns about costs, birmingham desperately fought to win the bid. and today is about celebrations. these are the athletes of the future. today when i announced the result, these 11 and i2—year—olds. .. any one of them could be a competitor. there will be a few spectators. i doubt any of these will be officiating, but they could be volunteers, because 16 is the age for volunteers. the world is their oyster. it's fantastic.

for at the weekend, and the games come thick and fast. you move from european to premiership rugby, and there is not time to sit. many had knownjim for a long time. maybe ten years. it's difficult when there's families and livelihoods involved. it is not ideal. the other way i look at it, this is professional sport, and we've got to appreciate it's pretty cut—throat. it's easy for outside people to point the finger. people who don't know. people who aren't sat in the room. it's easy to fire shots from the outside. do you feel frustrated by it? yes. i see how hard people work. it is personal, but again it is results driven. this is professional sport, and people want results. all i can say to my team is, trust, keep working, keep improving, and performance and results will come.

the wbo world middleweight champion billyjoe saunders is still unbeaten after a superb unanimous points victory over canada's david lemieux in quebec over the weekend. billyjones saunders is now targeting various super fights next year. if it's about the money, what i'll do, go and defend against some easy fights and pick up a few million, but it's not about that. it is about me, in my prime, testing myself. i look at some fighters and i think myself. i look at some fighters and ithinki myself. i look at some fighters and i think i would be comfortable, i know what i've got. i want to see if ican bring know what i've got. i want to see if i can bring that out, what i've got, it can be very very special. and it will be the moment of my absolute... the highlight of my life if i could do that. now returning to football.

you had a steel town defender jorgensen has promised to buy a tipple for every supporter who travels to their way again this weekend —— the huddersfield town defender. we owe the fans. but after losing 4—0 at bournemouth, we had people standing and clapping and cheering, and that was it, that is when i started thinking, if there is something i might be able to do, to show that i appreciate that, that we appreciate that. this says something different than we are normally told about footballers. you are supposed to be selfish. is that a myth? that is definitely a myth, it is about how you want to portray people. it is easy to say, footballers, they play football and they get a lot of
